Getting to know Tyson Chandler

by Royce Young on February 17, 2009 at 3:15 pm 18 Comments

Let me tell you, Tyson Chandler’s people are fast moving. Tyson is a bit of an Internet aficionado and his people have got me up to speed with everything Thunder fans need to know about in order to get the full Tyson Chandler experience.

He’s got a really nice website (tysonchandler.com) with lots of pictures, videos, interviews and stories.

Key links:

  • Bio
  • Working the Glass (an interview about how he’s developed his rebouding skill)
  • His blog (contains NBA.com and tysonchandler.com blog posts)
  • Video gallery (lots of great, extensive interviews)
  • And he’s on Twitter.

So get to know OKC’s new big man (even though we know him a little bit from two years ago) and check out his site and maybe give him a nice welcome message on his Twitter.

UPDATE: Tyson gives his first comments via his Twitter: “If the deal was half way done B4 the game .. Which bench would I sit on.. LOL”

he's a class guy. i met him in okc when he was a hornet. he was having dinner with bobby jackson. they were cool as hell. i'm glad he's here. i hope he is too. the thunder could be killing it in a couple of years if they keep all these guys.

Westbrook has no one he is exceptional strong with. Collison is the closest at +2. Durant has no one he is strong with. Westbrook is the closest at -3. Green has someone he is strong with. And it is Weaver, who may stay a role player. To build a strong team you need there to be some synergy. There isn't yet. The PJ era no longer provides enough of an excuse.

Green-Durant has improved to -6 overall for season which means they are better than earlier in the season and maybe they are getting near neutral recently. But the team overall has gotten to -6 too so having both on the court is no better than not. There is still no real sign that Durant-Green has positive synergy. Westbrook with either is a bit better but not as strong as it first looked and with both is not good. Kristic is moderately weak with Westbrook and Durant and better with Green. Will have to see how Chandler fits in. Will his marks be different from Krstic's? Collison is moderately weak with both Durant an dGren and more aceptable with Westbrook. For as good as they oung look in one perspective it still hard to play with them or at least all of them at the same time.

You could say how cares about Center (and PFs) assists but a throw inside, kick out for a 3 is a prety potent strategy in the league, With the Thunder so low in 3s attempted and made this certainly doesn't help. Maybe not hurt, but does not help. Green as a passer hasn't really lit it up. Among forwards 6-7 to 6-9 he is 20th out of 61 but less than half an assist better than average. Chandler and Krstic are in the bottom 4 for centers. I guess combined the positions they are average but is that enough? They should be strong at rebounding. But not scoring from these positions and we'll have to see the frontline combined defensive impact. I guess they are going to lean on Durant for assists. If they add 3 point shooters they are going to largely have to get the shots off Westbrook or Durant penetration or just find the shot themselves.

Fill that 15th spot with somebody interesting before or after the deadline.

Presti wants a 7 footer at center. Pretty good case for that and now he has 2 he choose. But both of which average .5 assists per game.

What does he really want at PF? A tweener like Green, tough hustler like Collison, a guy who might be able to muscle in some points like White or is the main type / guy somebody still to be found later? How many shots are you willing to give him?

Chandler seems like the kind of person / teammate that Presti wants.
At 26 1/2 is just barely young enough.
He is expensive but probably won't be as expensive on the n4ext c0ontract when money is needed to resign the young 3.

With Chandler, Krstic, Collison. White, Green available at PF and C minutes will get squeezed. Assume Green 25 minutes at PF and 10 at SF and then say Chandler 30, Collison 20 and you only have 21 left for Kristic and White. Kristic 15 at his pay and White only getting 6? Move Green down to 15 PF then you have move Durant back to SG at least 10 minutes. That could get Kristic up to 20 and White to 10 or alternatively just do one of these and move Collison back to 25.

Draft or sign another big and one of Collison, White, Kristic is just going to largely or completely sit or get traded. Swift unlikely to stay and only as a minimum contract type.

What does Presti think about Collison at PF? He has basically taken the Center position away from him. I'd think that the Center acquistions and Collison relative weak performance at PF and cost make it pretty likely Collison gets traded. Unless Green is reassessed into mainly SF and that only happens if Durant shifts back to SG. Maybe it could work but it sure didn't before.

As good as the moves can appear individually it is still not clear what Presti is setting up as long-term.

I think Griffin would start out coming off the bench as the sixth man and then as he gets more acclimated to the NBA game he could replace Green in the starting rotation. This probably would not result in Green losing many minutes though because he could spell both KD and Griffin; since he can play the 3 or 4.

Just got home a bit ago, but I am really happy with this trade.

Nix :
I’m very happy about getting Chandler…
My question is what do we do if we get Griffin now…
Do we keep Durant at the 3 and have Green ride the bench (supposing Griffin is what we think he is)
or do you move Durant to the 2?
1. Westbrook 2. Durant 3. Green 4. Griffin 5. Chandler
Either way….I think we will be insane if we get him…if not I’d like Harden…

If we get Griffin, minutes will come for him. My guess is that he won't get the baptism under fire like KD and Green got, he will have to earn his minutes behind some semi vets. I don't see Durant ever going back to the two except for spot minutes in the rotation.

Two years ago, Tyson was kind enough to take the time to have a picture taken with me when the hornets were in OKC. So I am very excited about having him back although I am still a hornets fan.

I was checking TC out on Twitter, and he doesn't have many followers yet. He follows a sports management company that suggested he needed a new nickname like The Hammer (Thor tie-in). I replied to both of them that DailyThunder was already at work on a nickname.

Thanks for the kind words Niall. I hate to see you guys lose him because NOLA is obviously my second favorite team, but if he was going to go anywhere, I'm glad it was here.

And his website is fantastic. There's so much to see and the design is wonderful.

Tyson's website (tysonchandler.com) is probably the best NBA player site I've seen. It's updated regularly and they put out some nice exclusive content.

Good job landing Tyson, OKC. He's a great guy and I'm sure he'll do well with the Thunder.
