Kevin Durant to participate in G-E-I-C-O/H-O-R-S-E/W-H-A-T-E-V-E-R

by Royce Young on February 10, 2009 at 11:34 am 8 Comments

He’ll be taking on Joe Johnson and O.J. Mayo in the event which takes place on TNT at 4 p.m. Saturday. While it doesn’t exactly strike me as the most interesting H-O-R-S-E group ever, but it should be cool to watch. But a lot of times, what wins in this game is a perfect combo of steady jump shots and creative shots.

So what could KD do to put away Orange Juice and Johnson? Both are pretty good shooters so I don’t know if KD could just out-do them with the 20-foot jumpers. If Durant gets control, he needs a couple zingers. And I’m not talking about the classic “Back to the basket, two-hand over-the-head” shot or the ”bounce it in” shot. Those are high risk, high reward shots. But here’s four suggestions:

1. Use lots of backboard. This always drove me nuts. Especially on straightaway shots. Nobody is used to banking in long jumpers so if KD could get the hang of that, he could throw off two pure shooters.

2. One-handed, left-handed. My friend Roy would always bust this out and I had no answer.

3. Since KD has go-go-gadget arms, he should see if he can stand under the backboard and then reach out (without jumping) and flip the ball up and in. The point: Use your unique physical attributes to create shots that the other guy just physically cannot do.

4. One hand scoop shot from three. This is your closer. It’s doable, but it’s not easy.

What do you guys think? Got a good H-O-R-S-E shot for KD?

NEW YORK (AP) -- H-O-R-S-E has galloped into the NBA's All-Star weekend.

The popular shooting contest will be part of TNT's coverage of All-Star Saturday night, the network announced Tuesday. Three NBA players, who will be revealed later, will take part.

The competition will take place outdoors at the NBA's All-Star Block Party in Phoenix on Feb. 14. The dunk contest, 3-point shootout and skills challenge are later Saturday night, and the All-Star game is Sunday.

If a player makes a shot in H-O-R-S-E, the next competitor must make the same shot or receive a letter. Players will have 24 seconds to execute their shots, and an NBA referee will rule if they're done properly. Dunking won't be allowed.

A player gets an 'H' for his first miss and is eliminated once he has all five letters of the word.

I remember the days back in the driveway, if you made a trick shot, and the other guy missed it, he'd make you "prove" it by making the trick shot again. If you missed, it didn't count.

Since this is year 1 of the game, you gotta throw some sort of trick shot in there. Anyone remember those old Jordan commercials "Off the bleachers, through the rafters, over the backboard, nothing but net"?

Larry Bird's shot behind/over the back board is always a good one too... A blind-folded 3pt from either the corner or the top of the key as well...

Ohhh yeah. Straight legs, bend, raise the ball as high as you can and flip it at the rim. Ugliest free throw ever.

Anthony Mason had a bad one too. He'd lean waaaay across the line and right before he fell on his face he flip his wrist and shoot.

One of my all-time favorites... The Bill Cartwright free-throw... ya'll remember that?...

Well I know playground rules said "no dunking" because that just wasn't fair if one guy could and nobody else could. But I think all is fair. I don't think you can say stuff like "Has to be a swish" or "has to bounce six times on the rim" but I think pretty much everything is fair game.

I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm actually googling the official All-Star H-O-R-S-E rules right now. My memory is too foggy from back in the day when the playground rules changed every week to remember what exactly is legal.
