Friday Bolts – 3.27.09

by Royce Young on March 27, 2009 at 8:09 am 22 Comments

Scott Brooks on “Twitting“: “Twitting? What is it?’” Oklahoma City interim coach Scott Brooks said the other day. “So thunderbolt2321you ‘tweet’ on Twitter? I don’t anticipate myself ever doing that. I guess I’m not around the guys in the locker room enough to see it.”

The Lost Ogle thinks we should say bye to Blake. And makes the point that Oklahoma State fans that are rooting against the Thunder winning the lottery because that means a Sooner would join the team, should stop. Is that really happening? Because that’s, uh, really stupid. Clark makes a comparison too: “As I said before, I initially bought the Boozer link and once mentioned it to Patrick. Then, Patrick came up with a much better player to view Griffin in light of: Amar’e Stoudamire. The Suns’ power forward/center is practically who Blake was cloned from. Stoudamire has the strength and the athleticism to overpower, run past or jump over any defender who has the misfortune of being assigned to him.” Fran Fraschilla agrees with you. And so do I.

Another vote for KD for Most Improved: “I still vote for Kevin Durant for most improved; making the jump from pretty good to almost great is a bigger deal to me than whoever doubled their numbers because their minutes went up significantly. The difference between champions and playoff teams is that champions are led by men who play with that attitude, that ‘I’m King of the World and I’m gonna crush you’re a@#!’ demeanor. Durant has been showing that this season, and it’s going to serve him well when he has a good team around him. Some might want to give it to Paul Milsap, but he really just got more minutes to do what he was already capable of doing. Rajon Rondo has definitely gotten better, but how much of that is due to his teammates? Devin Harris got consistent minutes and more shot opportunities, but I don’t know that he is a better player than he was a year ago. Durant has showed a real change in the quality of his performance, one that transcends minutes and shots.”

Talking Rookie of the Year: “However, should Rose’s inspired play and emergence as a point guard of the future be the only factors? The media hands out the ROY award and, honestly, I don’t have the faith in them to not simply skim the candidates list, spy “Rose, Derrick,” and auto vote him or have their intern/lackey vote for him. Rose –to most media types– is probably the most household of rookies this season; yet, Russell Westbrook has been steadily and silently dominating teams all season long in the forgotten NBA outpost of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.”

Why are people so obsessed with this so-called “wall” for rookies? Can a guy not have a couple off nights? Scott Brooks doesn’t buy it: Thunder interim coach Scott Brooks doesn’t buy into the theory rookies inevitably hit a wall during an 82-game grind. But whatever the reasons, Thunder rookie point guard Russell Westbrook’s stats have slipped the past two weeks, severely hampering his chances of winning Rookie of the Year. Best known for his athleticism and defense, Westbrook is shooting 35.1 percent the past seven games, 31.9 percent the past five. ”All guys have shooting slumps,” Brooks said. “He hasn’t shot the ball well but he’s done other things we like that he’s improving on. He’s making his teammates better. He’s passing the ball. He makes his free throws, rebounds and is playing good defense.”

Raptors Republic previewing tonight’s game: “That’s what Kevin Durant’s doing season and to think that Leo said the guy has bad shot-selection. To put this in a Raptors perspective consider that Bosh’s best season as a Raptor came in 06-07 when he averaged 22.6/10.7 in his fourth year. Durant appears to be well on his way to surpassing those marks on a consistent basis and is headed for stardom. So when you’re dreaming up Bosh trade-scenarios this summer just leave him out of it because there’s no way OKC is parting with him. There are two players that I would love to see on the Raptors: Monta Ellis and Jeff Green. Green had a bad rookie season coming out of Georgetown last year and might’ve been had in the summer. This year’s he’s upped his scoring by 7 points, his rebounding by 2, his 3-pt shooting by a whopping 13% and his FG% by 2. The athletic 17/7 forward is a great sidekick to Durant and it’s going to be hard to pry him away from OKC but then again, Bosh’s lure could be high.”

Earl Watson looks at the bright side as he uses his time off to work on his jumpshot: “My hand is starting to feel better and I’m getting more comfortable,” Watson said. “The doctor said it takes a full year to heal completely with any break and it’s actually getting closer. I can tell the difference in my shot. I can tell the difference with the way the ball fits in my hand. It was getting better the last couple of games before the DNPs. So it’s just a growth and for me that’s exciting.”

@Keith
Yeah, it would certainly make for an interesting trade discussion if Presti was confident that Bosh would resign, that's for sure.

Where is Earl? Why are they not playing Earl???

@joey
I definitely see what you're saying, but the things Bosh wants that would have him leave Toronto (good FO, good teammates, chance to win) he could find here. Presti would have to give a hard look at how likely he thinks it is that Bosh resigns, but I would be on board if it happened. A recent ESPN article mentioned how much more players could make be resigning in the offseason than waiting until FA in 2010. We would retain his Bird-rights if we traded for him, so he would have even more incentive to stay.

@Keith
Here's the problem though, Keith. Bosh's contract is up in 2010. And there's no amount of "verbal promise" in an agreement that would ever make me mortgage Jeff Green's future for a one year rental on Chris Bosh. Even though he's one of the best young bigs in the NBA.

Tack on Bosh's recent legal issues and I'll pass.

Yeah, if the Raptors are shopping Bosh, I'd trade Green and change for him in a heartbeat. Gotta love Uncle Jeff, but Bosh is a perennial all-star who can dominate games when necessary, all while playing solid all-around basketball. Bosh>Amare if it comes down to that in the summer or next trade deadline.

Blake would be incredible. He's got D-Howard athleticism but can actually score down low even better.

Or is Bosh the one luring Jeff Green away to come play with him?

Wait, did Raptors Republic just offer us Chris Bosh for Jeff Green?...

I'd be shocked if Johnny Flynn, assuming he doesn't go back to Syracuse, were a top 10 pick in this year's draft, in fact, even a lottery pick. Too much of what he does (very well, mind you) in college would not translate at all to the speed and size of the NBA. His ability to penetrate in college is predicated on him being one step ahead of the other team's pg and is then usually not helped out by a failure to correctly rotate from the opposition's weak side defender. In the NBA, the height, length and sheer speed of the NBA will almost certainly not just catch up to him, but outdo him.

The ability to finish at the rim in the NBA for a supremely undersized PG is also a question mark (think the currently benched TJ Ford from the Pacers, who dominated while at Texas but has been a solid second option when healthy while at both Toronto, Calderon was better, and now at Indiana, where Jarrett Jack has now usurped him). He's not an elite passer, doesn't possess elite court vision and is streaky at best as a jump-shooter. Where he excels is in pace, grittiness and leadership...but those, unfortunately, don't dismiss all the other concerns on their own.

Being an undersized high school PG myself, I always have love for the little guys. But Flynn would be behind Rubio, Warren, Jeff Teague, the allure of Brandon Jennings from Italy, Eric Maynor from VCU, Jrue Holiday from UCLA and even Ty Lawson on my draft list (he and Patty Mills are a wash).

I can think of a lot of other things to do with the fifth overall pick then take a gamble on the 8th best PG in a draft that will always be a backup, you know?

Jonny Flynn has said he is "definitely" coming back to Syracuse. But if his draft stock continues to soar, he may reconsider.

I graduated from OSU and I would not be upset one bit if we were to land Blake Griffin... if he's a good fit, sign him up. He is definitely a beast and I figure once he's out of that Sooner uniform and wearing a Thunder one (if that were to be the case) then he's a member of the Thunder! I do have to say that the people still throwing up the upside-down Hook'em Horns when KD is introduced or anytime they are shown on the jumbotron need to chillax a bit.

I happened to be a a gathering recently with Mr. Clayton Bennett himself, and after an introduction and my curtsy and ring-kissing were over, he asked me if WE (OSU fans) were going to be alright when THEY (the Thunder) get Blake Griffin.

That's straight from the horse"s mouth people, and Mr. Bennett has a fairly established history of getting his way (eventually), just ask the jilted Seattle fans!

I hear Jonny Flynn wants to return to 'Cuse. He didn't leave much room for leaving either. I think he's made up his mind already. But I hope he puts his name in the hat to see where he'd go. We might just lure him away.

And after watching that Mizzou-Memphis game last night, that Tyreke Evans looks like an incredible talent. A 6'6'' point guard with crazy handles? That's just impressive. I don't follow college basketball much anymore (You can thank watching 80 something Thunder games a season for that), so I haven't seen Memphis play more than twice, but Evans looks really good.

I think the lost ogle was just incorrectly speculating about OSU fans rooting against Griffin going to the Thunder. I (OSU grad) am certainly not rooting against the Thunder getting him. Jax makes the excellent point that KD went to Texas and nobody care nows. If you are a Thunder fan (or any NBA team) you want the best players that fit the system regardless of were they went to college.

As nice as it would be to get Blake, I'm not counting on it. I think that we will likely get the fifth or sixth pick, in which case, we pray that Jonny Flynn leaves college. He would be the ideal Earl Watson replacement.

Jax Raging Bile Duct

I'm sure the mature basketball fans don't care where the Thunder players played in college. If we did, we'd all hate KD for being a longhorn. But we don't, we love the guy. I never hear any OU fans booing Desmond Mason. No one will boo Blake Griffin either. That's just silly.

okiefunk
okiefunk 5pts

Ditto to KingGondo, neither I nor my husband (both OSU grads), or any of my many OSU friends have ever expressed a negative opinion about BG just because he is a Sooner. We have been season ticket holders (and Desmond Mason fans) for three seasons now, and to THIER credit, I can't recall any anti-Desmond noise from the OU fans and CERTAINLY no booing!

That being said, I DO have some concerns about Griffin's transition to the NBA, and how he would fit into the current Thunder line-up however. I don't think it is at all clear how even a studly, "dominator" in the NCAA can translate their game to the NBA and continue to dominate. There are many examples of first-round draft picks petering out with much more "under-rated" (i.e. second, third or fourth) picks becoming All-Stars. (any Greg Oden fans out there? How about Chris Paul or Russell Westbrook fans?) So, first isn't always what it is cracked up to be.

Royce
Royce 5pts

I haven't heard it either I just thought if that's true then that's pretty stinking stupid. I'm a Sooner and I LOVE Desmond Mason. To me he's an Oklahoman and I feel like I know him. I don't care that he played at OSU - it's cool having one of our college guys on our roster.

Air_Thurman
Air_Thurman 5pts

Agreed, I have never heard a single OSU fan root against the Thunder getting Blake Griffin. It's just a senario made up by OU fans. On the other hand, I don't want the Thunder to start tanking games to improve their chances of getting BG like some want.

KingGondo
KingGondo 5pts

I went to OSU, and I haven't talked to any other OSU fans that don't want BG on the Thunder. A starting lineup next year of Russ, Thabo, KD, Blake, and Nenad would be great, with Collison and Uncle Jeff off the bench. Add D.J. White and Weaver and we're starting to put together a really nice team.

If you want to be an elite team it's all about having depth inside, and the amount of offensive attention drawn to KD and our other shooters would probably help Blake's offensive game as well. It would be a pick well spent if we managed to get the #1 pick, but I'm also not sure he's worth trading up for.

dork
dork 5pts

I am an OSU fan and i'm not rooting against griffin landing in OKC... I just don't think it would be a very good fit without our current roster.. With Griffin it would be either a #1 pick comming off the bench to play or a #4 comming off of the bench.. Unless you wanted to move KD back to SG... and i'm pretty sure noone wants to do that.

  1. dustbury.com » Way north of all this snow says:
    March 27, 2009 at 6:43 pm

    [...] The Thunder managed to keep the turnovers down to 11, but shooting was off — 41.7 percent — and treys, three of 13, were few and far between. And they didn’t come close to their usual board dominance, pulling in only 37 rebounds. The OKC bench was good for 42 points, though 21 of those came from Nick Collison; Kevin Durant, who logged 37 minutes, about five less than usual, managed only 18 points, and no one else had more than 11. Damien Wilkins, though, had something to prove: in less than four minutes of garbage time he rattled off 8 points, missing only one shot. Even Robert Swift came out to play, though Earl Watson remains glued to the bench. [...]
