Summer League wrap: Pacers 91, Thunder 88

by Royce Young on July 7, 2009 at 6:58 pm 38 Comments

BOX SCORE

Indiana beat Oklahoma City 91-88 on some stupid Summer League technicality, but that’s not really important. Some life-changing thoughts about the game…

  • James Harden has so much control of his body it’s ridiculous. It’s very Manu-like, but he doesn’t fall backward when he attacks like Manu does. It’s more straightforward like Brandon Roy and he always gives himself a chance to put a shot up on the rim. Harden could be the ideal iso player late in games and between him and Westbrook, OKC may shoot 200 free throws a game. Harden was excellent again today (19 points on 6-13 shooting), hitting a couple open threes and also passing the ball extremely well. I haven’t been able to get a good read on him defensively, but the fact that I haven’t noticed him all that much on that end of the floor is probably a good thing. He did get his hands on a couple passes and showed some nice anticipation though.
  • B.J. Mullens’ jumper looked incredibly good – for about a quarter. He swished a beautiful turnaround jumper then nailed a nice 18-footer, but then came up completely empty on a post jump hook and badly bricked a couple jumpshots after that. But hey, you can’t hit them all. One thing that’s becoming painfully obvious about Mullens besides the lack of a post-up game is his defense. Roy Hibbert absolutely had his way with him (24 points, eight rebounds). He’s slow on the rotations and he gets bullied in the post. He’s got to get stronger and he’s got to get tougher if he wants to bang with elite NBA bigs.
  • Another thing about Mullens: His game actually is reminding me a lot of Nenad Krstic. At the end of the first quarter, Russell Westbrook and him ran a perfect pick and roll and Mullens popped and calmly hit the jumper with time winding down.
  • Shaun Livingston was in street clothes for the game and I’m pretty sure it was only because management probably didn’t want him to play. For one, they are probably trying to limit him exerting that much in back-to-back games, but also because he really doesn’t need a whole lot of time in Orlando. We all know he can play and he looked just fine yesterday. I imagine he’ll play tomorrow and maybe Friday, but I’m not so sure they’ll even send him out to Vegas if he does well the rest of the week.
  • For some reason I thought Westbrook would play less, but he actually played more (34 minutes). And he played extremely well. Though he did cough it up five times, he was efficient from the floor (9-15) and dished out eight assists. He scored 22 again and I think he could have gone for 40 if he really wanted to. Down the stretch he really took over and got to the rim any time he wanted. Westbrook hit a couple of nice pull-up free throw line jumpers and hit a nice rhythm 20-footer. More than anything, I think these games are really giving his confidence a boost. Look, we all know he’s not where he should be and he still gets in the lane and picks up his dribble with nowhere to go, but he’s just a 20-year-old second-year player that’s trying to get better. And 22 and eight on 60 percent shooting is pretty darn good.
  • One other thought on Westbrook’s shooting: His dribble pull-up jay looks much improved. It’s more fluid and has a lot more continuity. But for some reason he’s just not a great catch-and-shoot guy. Both threes he missed were the catch-and-shoot variety and one thing I noticed today that he seems to do is bring the ball down just a titch before pulling up to shoot when he’s fires off the catch. When he shoots off the dribble it’s all in rhythm and he doesn’t have a chance to “load up.” He’s got nice mechanics, but off the catch, they could be better.
  • David Thorpe on James Harden: “When I do my first rookie report, James Harden will be in the top 3. Book it.”
  • Serge Ibaka scored 13 on 6-7 shooting in 22 minutes, but grabbed just three rebounds. Much like Mullens, he’s got to get more physical in the paint. When you’re playing the 5 you need more than three boards. But Ibaka showcased his little jumper again and probably is the best back-to-the-basket big man on the Summer League roster. Neither Mullens or D.J. White have a whole lot of game on the blocks, but Ibaka is willing to post. I am thoroughly impressed by his skillset.
  • Moses Ehambe got in for three minutes and did absolutely nothing. No literally. He didn’t put anything in the box score. He was a three-trillionaire. Gotta be a record.
  • Kyle Hines played 10 minutes scoring four points and grabbing five rebounds. Just you now, De’Angelo.
  • Robert Vaden finally got a chance to show off his stroke a little today going 3-4 from the field and 1-2 from three for eight points. As soon as he entered he hit a nice transition three and was fouled on it for a four-point play.
  • Late in the game I noticed a few guys on the Thunder bench standing and rooting their teammates on, headed by Russell Westbrook. Here we are in the Summer League and Westbrook was up clapping and hollering at his teammates. It may have been meaningless July game, but these guys wanted to win and wanted to get better. I think this sort of attitude is what is most encouraging about this team.

And if you’re wondering how Indiana won, the game was tied at 88-88 with the Thunder in possession, but as a result of D.J.’s 7th foul (which was an offensive one), the Pacers got to shoot two free throws which ended up being the difference. It’s some quirky Summer League rule. But it’s not like it matters at all.

Tomorrow’s tip is at 4 p.m. against Boston.

So the 3 guys Presti choose for their jumpshooting probably more than anything else Ibaka, White and Mullens scored 28 points on 12-24 shooting and 4 points from the line in 63 minutes. Not bad. But Hibbard-MCRoberts-Hansbrough scored 57 on 16-21 with 23 points from the line (and 2 more points on Hansbrough 3s) in 67 minutes. One game but...sounds like the same thing we saw with Swift and Petro. We never saw Sene really.

Hoops hype is wrong, Livingston was signed to a two year deal last season.

Hines 4 pts & 5 boards in 10 mins.,puts him around a double double
if in for 20-25 mins a game. This guy was from the Southern Conference
and always doubled up on guys from the ACC., usually played his best against the best. MVP out of Italy earlier this year. I'd like him to find a home here., great work ethics

Hoops Hype shows that livingston is not signed for next year, I thought he was. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/oklahoma_city.htm

That leaves 11 contracts, plus Harden and Mullens who have to be signed due to draft position (correct me if I'm wrong). Livingston gives them 14. Ibaka would make sense as the 15th player. Problem is, Mason may have to be let go - because of the dead-weight duo, Watson and Atkins. Of course those two, plus Wilkins, have expiring contracts this year, totaling more than $14 million. Collison, Kirstic and Sefolosha expire next year.

Sorry if I'm just thinking out loud, guys.

Bryan

@Royce
I was under the impression that it depended on the contract, but I'm just not sure.

And what is it, a player with five (?) years experience can't be sent down, right? Or am I making that up?

J.G.

@Bryan
Guys with contracts can be send to Tulsa, happened to Weaver and DJ White last year a ton, but they still count for the 15 roster whether they're in the Ford Center or not. The only way to get a guy off the 15 roster limit is with a trade or buy-out, yes.

Here's a summary of the active/inactive deal:

Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, each team is required to carry 12 players on its active list and at least one player on its inactive list. Teams may have a maximum of three players on its inactive list, which includes ANY players sent to the NBA Development League.

In the past, a team maintained a 12-player roster, with additional players being put on the injured list, which forced the player to sit a minimum of five games before again being eligible to play. Now, the active and inactive list can be set on a game-by-game basis, one hour before tip-off, with no length of stay required for either list.

If, for example, a star player is injured and forced to sit out one or two games, the coach can now place him on the inactive list and "activate" another player, giving the team a full 12 players available to play. In previous seasons, that player would have had to stay on the injured list five games, so instead the team would frequently just sit the player and make do with the other 11 available players.

Vaden, Weaver, Mullens, Ibaka, DJ White...those would be the guys fighting for a roster spot if Atkins, Wilkins and Watson are not traded or bought-out.

Bryan
Bryan 5pts

@J.G.
Okay, so roughly 3 players at each spot (just for simplicity's sake) can be signed with 12 on the active list. And I've been told that guys with contracts have to be on the roster and can't be sent to Tulsa or Europe and can only be cleared by trading or buying them out - not 100% sure.

If so, the Thunder can add three more players to their current roster of Atkins, Collison, Durant, Green, Kirstic, Livingston, Sefolosha, Watson, Weaver, Westbrook, White and Wilkins (who chose not to excercise his player option).

Clearly Harden has a spot. I'm not sure if they are forced to add Mullens or not but, if so, that only leaves Ibaka. I have not seen enough from the others to make me think that they can do any better than Tulsa. Vaden has been a real disappointment, so far.

Am I missing anything?

I’m really liking the sound of the way things are going. I’m still not getting my expectations up to high but I’m believing that we could have a much better season!!! Maybe 35-40 wins???? Is that to ambitious?

I meant to comment on this earlier, but forgot...

In my opinion, 40 wins is too ambitious. 35 wins would be a stretch, but possible. 30 wins is reasonable.

J.G.
J.G. 5pts

@Bryan
Per the bargaining agreement, they have to employ an average over the season of no less than 14 players on their roster, 12 active (though for a two week span they can do 11; same deal with the Inactive list, they are supposed to have at least 1 on the Inactive list but can have zero for a two week span).

I'm not 100% sure (like 97%), but I think they can have 15 signed roster spots, with 12 on the active and 3 on the inactive. Though I do think there's an exception with 3 or more injuries as well.

Bryan
Bryan 5pts

@Royce

I looked at the roster rules last night to see how many of these guys they can actually have on the active roster at the begining of the season, and it's only 12. It was less clear how many they can have riding the bench in street clothes.

How many of these guys can they actually keep around without trading a player or two? Article perhaps?

@Clark Matthews
I said the same thing yesterday Clark. Weaver just seems to go unnoticed on the court. He did make that fancy play on the fast break and hit a three, but it just seems like he never makes a big impact.

He is a good defender though and that's almost enough to keep him around, just based on that.

Clark Matthews

Is Kyle Weaver actually playing? I see his name in the boxscore, but I would think a guy who was a part time starter in the NBA would do something noticeable in Summer League games...you know since he's playing against guys who won't even be getting invitations to training camp.

Royce :@ChrisI know for a fact though that Hibbert scored four times on Mullens in the post though. While they were matched up, Hibbert dominated him.

agree with ROyce - dont know if you saw the game Chris but it was obvious - he's got to bulk up . . .

Weaver seems more like the Bruce Bowen type but can play the one. I honestly think he'll be come our third option at the 1. Possibly 4th if they want to go big and have Harden run the point.

Weaver can play D and hopefully his 3pt shot continues to improve. It's already better then RW's, but if it gets solid he'll have plenty of PT and could end up getting Thabo traded while Thabo's stock is high.

DJ's got a really sweet midrange jumper. He needs to work on his defense. He'll be a rotation guy, but we're talking 3rd option at PF.

Harden will be a fan favorite quickly. He's so polished already.

I wouldn't worry about Russell's turnovers yet. He'll still average several per game in his second year. But this year his assist to turnover ratio will be better. I'm afraid we'll still see some 9 turnover games from him. But what we should see is better decision making and better shot selection. The turnovers will be more from mistakes that he makes trying to force and issue or misrunning a play, rather than the double dribbles and other unforced turnovers.

He can't go from stumbling rookie to Steve Nash in one summer.

justin

I think Ibaka can be a rotation player. Don't really see anything in D.J. White or Mullens so far. Mullens looks nimble for his size that's about it.

Either Jeff Green will have to be traded for a legit PF eventually or the Thunder are going to have to sign one in free agency. They need someone who can bang inside and finish easy shots.

Love da recap Royce,yeah DJ,Mullens and Ibaka need to be a lot more aggressive on the boards. They're gonna have bigger and better competion in Vegas.

I agree with Royce's asessment of all of them and Mullens should develope a edge to his game, with some added strength and he should be goog to go.

Weaver is going to be playing on a team where, at best, he will be the fifth scoring option - his job is to defer . . . I agree he has the mentality and passing of a PG, just not the ballhandling . . .

Bryan
Bryan 5pts

Was I the only one that was disappointed by Weaver's play? Again? He actually played pretty well at the point position when Westbrook was on the bench. But, still. He needs to be more aggressive when he has a chance to score instead of always deferring. He's almost more natural at PG than he is a SG in terms of his style of play.

No, I'm thinking 35 is pretty reasonable. I'd be very surprised (and stoked) if they pulled of more than 40 wins.
