Sir Iblocka, Chewblocka, The Sergeon… what say you?

by Royce Young on October 13, 2009 at 2:29 pm 64 Comments

Over the past day or two, you incredibly creative Thunder fans have been tossing out excellent nickname suggestions for everyone’s new favorite player, Serge Ibaka. As one reader wisely point out, Ibaka’s name itself is so entirely awesome that it almost serves alone as a cool nickname. But the possibilities… oh the possibilities.

So here’s what we’ve heard so far:
Sir Iblocka
Sir Blocka
Serge Iblocka
Chewbacca
Chewie
Chewblocka
Pantera Voladora (Leaping Panther in Spanish)
King Congo
The Sergeon
Ibaka Blocka
Sergesaurus Rex

I think my vote goes to “Sir Blocka.” Simple, sweet and makes sense. Especially after last night’s absolute shot destruction of Grant Hill’s layup. Your thoughts? Too many options for a poll, but we need a consensus. These are important things people. Very important.

You might as well add Sir Chewbacca or Surge Iblocka

How about just "The Serge"

@Danny
for some reason I keep coming back to this site, knowing almost everyone of you is sleeping, just to check if somehow somebody leaves ONE comment. I have to read it asap. Right NOW, not later. I check this site when I am at work, when i am about to sleep, whenever i get internet access.

guys beware, Daily Thunder is addictive.

FYI, Darnell Mayberry prefers The Sergeon and Mike Sherman likes Serge Iblockya.

Royce
Royce 5pts

I've heard people call him Air Congo before I think. That's decent.

How about "The CONG"? or just "CONG"? It would be a nice slow chant that starts in loud city and builds slowly down to the Nicholson seats, then the Thunder drummers pick it up....

cong, cong, cong, cong, CONG, CONG, CONG!

Works for blocks and dunks I think?
But I vote for Ibaka Blocka too....

@MartzMimic
Agreed, Martz--this is cool.

Granted, Royce and the others have been doing a great job at providing regular and quality commentary, and that's important for retaining regular readers. But I would like to see this blog's stats (page views, comments, etc) in comparison to the other TrueHoop team-blogs. It looks like we're growing quickly!

With that said: I'm partial to just calling Ibaka by his real (and incredible!) name. But if I had to choose, I would go with 'King Congo.'

I'm weary of slapping him with a nickname that incorporates blocking shots when he's yet to play a real NBA game and accumulate any blocked-shots. Plus I don't want to limit him: I have a feeling that King Congo will also be known for his rebounding and dunking before long. =)

I vote for Sergesaurus Rex. I think he'll be more than just a shot blocker, plus the Rex incorporates the "King" from King Congo.

I dont think he winds up on the end of the bench. I can see him taking Etan's spot in the center rotation.

I like Chewie it has that broken logic feel.

King Congo sounds good to me.

MartzMimic

Totally off the subject, but it's nice to see 50 comments of us talking about a nickname for a likely end-of-the-bench center. I didn't read the Valley of the Suns recap until late last night, and the only comment posted was a trackback to Daily Thunder.

I know there are other Sun blogs - Bright Side of the Sun had 9 comments, most very favorable toward the Thunder - but it's nice to see active and involved fellow DT readers.

The first from Congo, i might add. Read it is a different contry then the other Congo ( replubic of or something)ala Mutombo.

He's from Congo right?
that makes him KING CONGO.

I didn't even think about any racial sensitivity when I went with King Congo. I'm going with Segersauras Rex.

Nice. Hopefully one gives us something.

I just mentioned this on twitter to Durant, Westbrook, Harden and Green, not sure they will see it or reply but I did just for fun, I will keep you updated if they do or not. http://twitter.com/taberbh

I personally like a name that isn't with any specific skill since he could be good at things other then blocks and it also needs to be fairly short. While I like Pantera Voladora it is a little long, or maybe it just doesn't flow off my tongue well since I am not used to it.

I really just like his name Serge and think that could work. Also dig Sergeon.

The Sergeon. No announcer will ever say pantera voladora. shouting nine is great as well

GAP

King Congo, hell i'm Africian American and I don't see anything wrong with it, it's just like Andy said, it's intimidating and he has a mean streak to his blocks as we all have seen last night. Sort of like when King Kong climbed the side of that building and put the fear of God in everyone

@Rob Mahoney
Have you seeeen Serge Ibaka?

Chewblocka is a nice nickname because of the "Chewie" relation. You know... Chew-ibaka, for those scoring at home.

Rob Mahoney

Chewblocka is a tremendous nickname, but I think I'll reserve it for JaVale McGee or something.

Perfect, since German is probably one of the four or five Languages he knows. I could see him highstepping after he says it.

Pantera Voladora. It won't catch on here but how cool of an image is a vicious carnivore attacking you at the rim?

@Cpt. C-Note </a
There is not as much hype as Harden is getting. I know, I know, he was a much higher pick. I have wanted the sergeon to be a part of this team since he was drafted and stashed away. Could be from all the lack of success this team has had in picking bigs the last decade, or his defensive potential.

Bryan
Bryan 5pts

@Cpt. C-Note
I see your point - especially since we have yet to give Sefolosha a reasonable nickname - but we have to have our fun.

I will be using my favorite three regardless... Sergesaurus Rex, The Sergeon and Iblocka (Sir Blocka)... okay four favorites. And I reserve the right to make up a new one on a moments notice... Like Chris Burman

dork
dork 5pts

@Cpt. C-Note

Yea I agree on being a bit optimistic on him. But I have been keeping track of his overseas play and seeing him play in the nba live / and swat one into the expensive seats AND its this close to the season has me all kinds of excited!

Oh he could just yell out his number after he blocks a shot... NINE!!! get it german? oh nevermind

Cpt. C-Note
Cpt. C-Note 5pts

I'm not trying to hate, I just think it's a bit early to be this "high" on Ibanka before the season starts. I hope he lives up to all the hype. We can REALLY use him in our rotation if he can be consistent on both ends of the court.

ok...I vote chewy...

Brew

Sergeon please.

@Dooney

well being drunk with over being overworked that was my version of agreement. :)

SWAT thurst with a bolt of SERGE!!

eh notice the SWAT Team (serge/thabo), Thunder, and new nickname? Less cool now that I pointed it out.

MartzMimic

I have to go with some form of Iblocka too. Pantera Voladora is my favorite, but it's not something I'd typically yell from the stands.

I guess... but I honestly don't know how anyone has gotten a nickname then.

Gotta vote for Chewbaca. My wife started calling him that anyway, and I'm pretty sure she isn't secretly monitoring this site. It shortens nicely to chewy when we want to be particularly affectionate, and it comes with its own sound effects. Remeber how everbody has their own "theme" that plays after a score? They can just run tape of that nasal, bleating sound that wookies make when Serge slams one home.
