12 things a Thunder fan should ask for, for Christmas

by Royce Young on December 15, 2009 at 12:56 pm 58 Comments

Originally, I was going to come up with an actual list of gift ideas for a Thunder fan. I’m a man of the people and I want Calvin and Hobbes Christmasto help out any shoppers out there. But all I got was “basketball tickets” and then I couldn’t think of anything else. So I decided to be a tad more abstract. If Santa were real (which he absolutely is, 12-and-under DT readers), and he could grant us Thunder fans anything we wanted before this holiday season is up, what should we ask for? Here is my list and I did not check it twice:

12. A Phoenix Suns losing streak
The Suns started hot (see what I did there? harf!), but have cooled (!!!) lately, losing five of seven in December. We all know about how OKC owns the Suns unprotected first round pick this year and while it looks very unlikely the Suns will fade (jfshfbsf!!!) it’s definitely possible. Consider: Last season at this time, Phoenix was 15-10, before eventually slipping and falling short of the postseason. I would never wish injuries on a team, but if Amar’e Stoudamire’s retina decides to explode again and Steve Nash loses an arm in a farming accident, I’m just saying I’m not going to cry over it.

11. A Daily Thunder shirt, of course
Does this really need an explanation? The shirts should be completely re-stocked and ready to roll here very soon. My apologies if you missed out on the last go. I didn’t anticipate them flying off the shelves quite like this. But seriously though, thanks for buying them.

10. Kevin Durant’s 3-point shot to return to its rightful owner
Really, I feel like this should be No. 1. I’ll confess I care a little too much about KD’s statistics and standing among the great players in the league. I watch his line every night with a hawk’s eye. If he starts 3-11 from the floor with two 3-point misses, I kick through a window barefooted. Then I start thinking, “OK, if he hits his next three shots, now he’s 6-14. That’s not too bad.”

And while Durant has had a fantastic start to this season, his 3-point shot has been strangely inconsistent. So far, he’s hitting just 29 percent from deep, compared to 42 percent last year. But the good news is, things are looking up in December. KD is 13-34 this month from 3, which is 38 percent. A strong run in January and February like he had last year where hit 45 percent those two months combined would be very nice.

9. A mustache for Nick Collison
Nick teased us with one via Twitter this summer, nearly sending Clark Matthews into a seizure he was so happy. And I’m on the bandwagon. I want some lip fur for Nick. Consider this the beginning of the Collison Mustache Campaign. I don’t know how we’ll influence this exactly, but seriously Nick, grow out a little pelt under your nose. Doesn’t matter the style – the Handlebar, Rollie Fingers, the Male Porn Star, the Lampshade – just give us something.

8. More minutes for James Harden
I feel like I have to preface this with, “I love Thabo.” I don’t necessarily want Harden to cut into Thabo’s minutes, but I just want more burn for The Beard. No, he’s not anything the defender like Thabo is. But he does add a completely other dimension to this team offensively. Sometimes things go stale and you’re looking at the bench hoping for Harden. He can hit the 3, drive and dish, get out and run or just get in the lane and go to the line. He’s dynamic and it’s time for him to get in the upper 20s with his minutes.

7. This okthunder_pd_fas
Having a baby boy? Just find out? Want to frame your ultrasound in a gag NBA frame? Then this item is just for you. You can start pressuring your future son and vicariously living through him even BEFORE he’s born! And as an added feature, you can place completely unreasonable expectations on him. Don’t let anyone tell you this gift is just a joke or something cute. It’s FOR REAL.

6. A three-game winning streak
For all the success this team has had so far, one thing that hasn’t been accomplished is a three-game run of wins. OKC has won two straight four times, but hasn’t had a chance to put together a real streak. They really blew a chance at it with a home loss to the Clippers back in November. But before 2009 closes, there is a good opportunity there. I’m not afraid to point out road games anymore because this team can win away from home. So I’m looking at a home win against Charlotte and two roadies over New Jersey and Washington. Or if you don’t like that, maybe you could get behind one starting this week: two home wins over Dallas and Detroit and then some revenge over the Rockets in Houston. I could see it happening.

5. Nick Collison to return to Twitter
I just can’t take one witty Nick comment once every month. I need more! During the offseason, I’d actually get a little excited when I’d see he tweeted something. Now his last update was Dec. 6 and before that, Nov. 24. I was really looking forward to some of the clever stuff Collison could drop in 140 characters on us throughout this season. Come on Nick. Bring it back. And a mustache. Don’t forget that.

4.  Four more Ebay gifts just for fun:

A “Your Team Sucks” shirt: If OKC is to take it to the next level, its fans have to stop being so kind and classy and turn into arrogant pricks. Laker and Celtic fans are nodding right now.

A Thunder Garden Gnome: I mean, who wouldn’t want that? You could even get a little sign to stick next to it that says, “Welcome to Thunder Gnome.”

Some tickets with a butt on them: I guess that’s how you advertise a pair of tickets on Ebay. (Link potentially not safe for work)

Kevin Durant McFarlane figure: This is actually is pretty cool, except that KD kind of looks like Dikembe Mutombo. I used to be really into Starting Lineups. These McFarlane things have kind of replaced them which is a darn shame. Starting Lineups were awesome.

3. Another Broingtons video
This was originally going to be a wish asking for KD and Russell Westbrook to cut their turnovers down, but in the end, I had to consider what was most important. I’ve spent all morning perusing YouTube trying to find what I think would be the perfect video and I can’t really come up with anything. Mainly because my musical tastes don’t extend much further than five artists. Maybe an NWA song and they could all wear the shirt, with a special guest appearance from Nenad Krstic? I am foaming at the mouth. Or better yet, any song and they could wear a Broingtons shirt. My head just exploded.

2. A game-worn D.J. White mask
You’ve got to think they’ll auction that bad boy off when he’s finished with it. And why wouldn’t they? I can’t even imagine the bids rolling in for a smeared, sweaty, stinky plastic face covering. My wife absolutely HATES those masks. When I floated the idea of Richard Hamilton back in May, she flipped out and said, “That’s the face mask guy, isn’t it? NO THANK YOU.” I don’t know what’s weirder: Her irrational hate of plastic face masks or her irrational love for Mo Williams.

1. A plus .500 2009
Nothing would make me happier. Not even a super porn stache from Nick. Well, maybe a super porn ‘stache from Nick. But not too many other things would make me happier. There are nine games left before 2010 starts up. Right now, OKC sits at 12-11. So. For you smarties, that means the Thunder needs to go at least 5-4 to finish on the high side of .500. A 4-5 run would be .500, which wouldn’t be all that bad. I’d take that if you were going to give me a Collison lip sweater and a D.J. White plastic mask. I’m flexible.

So come on Thunder Santa. I’ve been good. I swear. Just don’t put a losing streak in my stocking. I haven’t been that bad.

Biedrens would be a great consolation prize to those of us who wanted to draft Lopez in the first place.

I realize that I've said Brook Lopez so many times now that I should be required to change my avatar. So I'll try and stop that broken record.

I seriously also need to cool down a lil bit with the trading players ideas.. just a lil bit.. All I know is I would hate to do something like trading a young Brett Farve.....

@f5alcon

Man I used to love watching rodman play. Always boxed out, played solid defense, and ocasionally whe he got the ball he would take a dribble or two with a goofy lil walk up the court. Kinda sad how people always overlook him.

and The bulls thing was just my way of saying its possible :P

I think that kinda proves that you do, if the bulls are the only team in the last 20 years to do it, then that kinda shows you need a good PF/C, Really the bulls are the only team in the last 40 years to do it. At least a post offense presence if not a solid defensive PF/C. At least some the bulls titles had rodman who was a great rebounder.

Yeah, where’s Rodman when you need him?!

you laugh, but rodmans career rebounds is 13 RPG, thats more then the league leader this year, rodman had 2 seasons averaging 18 RPG

how about we go after Curry. I would trade Westbrook for him(I realize others would not) but there is no way we should be shopping Serge this early into his career

get Biedrens and randolph for green and whoever else we have to give up minus durant and harden. thats a frontcourt! - imagine durant at the 3 next to those two. once durant gets a bit bigger him and randolph would be interchangeable at 3/4 and no team would want to play them

im with you justin, im dont understand the infatuation with Gortat. Especially with that fat contract he got, theres no way he will live up to that. solid player off the bench but not worth that money by a long shot

justin
justin 5pts

FYI to all you Marcin Gortat fans, he's been absolutely horrible this season in Orlando. His TRB% has fallen to 14% from 20%, his TOV% has doubled (!). His defense has been inconsistent. He's still blocking the same number of shots and has a decent FG%, though.

He's approaching 400 minutes played this year, which is about 33% of his total NBA experience prior to this season. So I wouldn't write this off as small sample size, either.

GS players,Biedrins is 240lbs with 6-11,Anthony Randolph and wright are 210lbs with 6-10,i think they are too slim to fight with strong PF/C in paint

@Vega

It's sports journalism, you believe half of what you read. No NBA team is going to trade assets without getting the best value they can get. There's no value for the Warriors to trade Andris Biedrins without getting another young center in return, draft picks to try and draft another young center, or salary cap relief (i.e. giving up Maggette) so that they can sign a young center.

Trading Biedrins for expirings and/or picks makes no sense when there are teams that will surely take back Corey Maggette's contract with him. There are teams that will also certainly send legitimate prospects to GSW in return for Biedrins. Expirings and picks can get you a guy like Tyson Chandler who is on a much larger contract from a team that can't afford it, but Biedrins is on an affordable one.

Vega
Vega 5pts

This is the same team that is shopping Stephen Curry and Anthony Randolph. They might be okay with expirings and picks.

justin
justin 5pts

If they aren't getting rid of Maggette then it's unlikely we'd be able to acquire Biedrins without giving up some serious assets.

Vega
Vega 5pts

Maybe GS would be okay with us taking Turiaf instead of Maggette.

justin
justin 5pts

It's just wasted money though. Where would Maggette get minutes on this team? It'd be like paying Andris Biedrins $17 million a year for the first four years (his + Maggette's salary) since Magz would hardly play.

Vega
Vega 5pts

@justin
I'd do the first trade. Maggette would probably be thrilled to get out of GS, and he isn't a bad player, although he'd be the most expensive seventh man ever. If he doesn't work out, he could probably be traded to some stupid team for expirings. As far as bad contracts go, he's a pretty productive one, so I can see somebody being willing to take him if he doesn't work here.

justin
justin 5pts

Nick Collison, Etan Thomas, DJ White for Andris Biedrins and Corey Maggette works. Is getting Biedrins worth losing the financial flexibility?

Etan Thomas, Serge Ibaka, Kyle Weaver, and Phoenix's 1st round pick for Andris Biedrins also works.

GS would definitely accept the first trade. Not sure about the second one.

justin
justin 5pts

In fact, I can't see a way we could get Andris Biedrins without giving up Ibaka. The Warriors would definitely want some kind of big man in return that isn't on his last legs.

justin
justin 5pts

@Vega

It'd cost more than that since lots of teams would look into acquiring Biedrins. Probably Etan Thomas / Jeff Green / pick. Maybe they could get away with Etan Thomas / some combination of Ibaka, White, Sefolosha / pick.

Remember this guy is a young center on a steal of a contract.

The only way I can imagine that Andris Biedrins could be acquired without giving up one of our prospects is if we also take back Corey Maggette. I don't think that's a likely scenario for this team, but other teams would probably do that and be more aggressive sending assets to the Warrios for a player like Biedrins.

I'd like better WiFi at the Ford Center.

Vega
Vega 5pts

Apparently, the Warriors have put every single player on the team on the trading block. Normally, we probably wouldn't be able to get Biedrins, but the Warriors are in such disarray that we might be able to buy low and get him for Etan and picks. That would be awesome.

I really think Royce you might want to remind people to calm down a lil bit. As excited as I am to what we could do people seem to be forgetting that we are a .500 team at the moment that could potentially be a result of a crazy hot start (hope thats not the case but had to be said) Last year we were a lotto team. This year we COULD be a playoff team IF another team slips. If the rest of the West gets/stays healthy I honestly think we will miss the playoffs this year (still being healthy is a big if :P)

p.s. what do i have to do to get people to stop thinking Gortat is the answer at Center? :P

Ryan McCulloch

Ok so I know everyone is thinking about whats going to happen this summer so i minds well give us some brain candy. The thunder have every piece possibly needed for a championship team.. A defensive stopper in Thabo, A possible 3 point specialist in Harden, A superstar in Kevin Durant, Role players to help fill out the team but its missing one important piece to the puzzle.. A good legit shot blocking rebounding big man. Possible suitors? Gortat from Orlando? Maybe even Bosh from toronto? Just imagine a starting lineup with westbrook, harden, durant, green, and bosh. Not only would they win championships for years which would keep bosh and durant happy enough to stay, but it will also increase talks of KD for mvp. If scotty brooks was smart then he would heavily pursue preferrably bosh, but i could settle for gortat. and on top of the cap space we have the contracts of nick collison and other trade baits that could also sweeten deals. I smell championships as long as the right moves are made

Steve H
Steve H 5pts

They will have money to spend next year on free agents, but not enough to pay out 20 mill for the likes of Amare or CB4 without paying a tax penalty (they have 53mill on the books WITH Biedrin's 9 mill). Not saying I would do it in their place, but move would save 2mill this year, make them REAL players in 2010 free agency, and give them 3 extra, pretty decent picks in a deep draft with which to build around Curry, Ellis and Maggette.

justin
justin 5pts

I'd love Anris Biedrins but I'm not sure why the Warriors would trade him. Their cap situation isn't that bad, their only real bad contract is Corey Magette. Biedrins has one of the best contracts in the league compared to his production.

I'd trade anything on the roster to get him except Russ, KD, Harden, and Sefolosha.

Steve H

Hoopsworld says the Warriors are having a firesale- All I want for Christmas is Biedrins. He is scheduled to come back from his groin injury in a week or two, which is close enough for me. Thomas' expiring K and as many draft picks as they want. Pleeaasseee Presti, Pleeaasseee!

No it hasn't been hacked. He's just a fan of the shirts. Jeff Green had the "Go Green!" up last week.

Robert

Not a bad list if you ask me. My addition would be 1. Jeff Green to be consistent, not more consistent, but just to have an ounce of consistency at all. I swear the box scores for his points are something like this - 4, 30, 6, 17, 59, 11, 2, 26 and the rebounds - 7, 1, 4, 15, 3, 12, 4, 2, 14.

The only thing I don't want is jerseys with that shiny sheer like the Nuggets wear. I dislike those.

Vega

Collison needs to grow back that mustache. Also, don't buy that KD Mcfarlane figure. I bought one back when it first came out, and it is grossly out of scale with the other Mcfarlane figures. It's like Mcfarlane though that he was 6'0" instead of 6'10". My Dez Mason figure towered over KD, as did my Mike Bibby figure. I was so annoyed with it that I took it back.

And as far as alternates go, we will be eligible to have one next year. I'm hoping for yellow or dark blue.

I've been asking for an alternate road jersey for a while now. I hope it happens by next year. I have a feeling it will.

@Durantula
The roadies have grown on me--the color looks nice on most players, but I agree definitely think the lettering needs to change. Unfortunately, I think there's a league policy that teams can't change unis for 3-4 years, in order to create brand recognition. One of the few downsides to the quick move to OKC--hastily designed uniforms.

Durantula
Durantula 5pts

Seriously though... All I want is new road uniforms. It is embarrassing. Our away jerseys are easily the worst in the league. Just terrible.

KingGondo

I’d also like for Etan to come up to Loud City and read me a poem during the timeouts. It’s not like he has anything better to do…

I wonder if he'll do "I Just Spent the Last Timeout Staring at the Clippers Dancers"? That's a classic.

I want:
Alternate uniforms, maybe with a bison theme?
Nate Robinson as a backup PG
Marcin Gortat for Etan, and
Chris Bosh, as long as we don't have to trade Uncle Jeff or Serge. :)

dork

. Nenad in a Broingtons film with a HUGE gold (preferrably cheap fake) chain with a pink fuzzy pimp hat.

. Collisons lip warmer!!

. Either a Broingtons video with the three wearing the shirts.. Or all three sitting next to each other at the dunk contest wearing said shirts and getting on TV...or KD playing HORSE in a Broington shirt :)

. A Collison "The Fundamentals" spoof of a segment where he suddenly appears infront of someone walking in an office with his feet planted...... after the person bumps into him, knocking him down... you hear the person say, "where'd you come from".. nick smiles slyly saying "I'm BATMAN!" as he strokes his lip fur. Then to dart out of the frame.
