Oklahoma City literally crusies to five games over .500

by Royce Young on January 12, 2010 at 12:10 am 31 Comments

Durant GreenBOX SCORE – ADVANCED BOX SCORE

I like a good close game. I love the intensity it brings, the edge-of-your-seat moments and the sheer explosion of joy when a big play happens in your favor. Those type of games are what make this whole thing so darn fun. But watching your team completely outclass another squad can sometimes be just as, or even more fun.

We were due for one of these. Oklahoma City hasn’t put it on easy street against a team since, well, really back in November versus Orlando. And the Thunder pretty much put the Knicks away early, running out to 63 first half points en route to a 106-88 win. And it wasn’t that close. With five minutes left, OKC led 100-71.

The Thunder played really lose offensively, taking good shots in rhythm, making nice passes and just sharing the ball all over. But what keyed this one was just flat out excellent man-to-man defense. Every shot was challenged. I’m talking, every shot. Passing lanes were closed. New York didn’t have any room to breath at any point and it forced them into 20 turnovers and held them to 38 percent from the field. There was just a great energy and focus for OKC right from the opening tip. The offense and defense, plus great hustle. Every loose ball went the Thunder’s way it seems. Plus they were making shots. Which helps.

Notes:

  • The Knicks didn’t do their homework with Russell Westbrook. They must have confused last year’s (or early season) Westbrook with the new and improved model. He can hit that elbow jumper if you give it to him. Westbrook had about as quiet a 17 points as you could have. He was 7-11 from the floor, dished out five dimes and didn’t turn it over. All in just 25 minutes.
  • Jeff Green was aggressive and while 4-13 for nine points isn’t awesome, I thought he was solid. He had seven boards, a block and three steals. But he was 1-5 from deep again. One issue I’ve notice with his 3-point shot is that he sometimes drifts on it. He’ll catch in rhythm with an open look but instead of settling his body, he’ll just shoot in motion. And his body will fade to the left, throwing off the whole flow of the shot. He’s a really nice shooter when set and ready. And he can make it while drifting, but when you’re struggling a bit with it, I think it’s better to take only the good ones.
  • Durant is a really nice passer. He forces things sometimes, but he always has his head up when he gets in the lane and looks for teammates. He had just three tonight, but the way he got in the lane with ease and found cutters was impressive. He could be a five assist a game guy. I’m convinced of it.
  • Good for Jonathan Bender. Honestly, I’m happy for him. He’s still got some skill left. I can see why he came back.
  • Kevin Durant was 9-10 in the first quarter from the free throw line. That’s a freebie more than averages a game in the first quarter alone. The reason? He was aggressive and New York has nobody to check him. He finished 13-16 from the line, scored 30 on 8-14 shooting and pulled down five boards. Yawn.
  • I think Eric Maynor would start on a lot of teams. You wouldn’t think a backup point guard could be such a huge piece to the puzzle, but he has vastly improved this team. Instead of the offense stalling for three minutes at a time when Westbrook sat, things stay at the same level and sometimes even pick up. He had nine points and four assists in 23 minutes and hit a 35-foot 3, which was awesome.
  • KD scored just five points in the fourth quarter. But in what was actually “crunch time” tonight, he had 15 points in the first quarter.
  • The Thunder had 54 points in the paint.
  • Serge Ibaka has some butterfingers. But he has really nice touch around the bucket. Kind of an interesting combination. I’m sure he’ll get much better at catching and securing the ball when he gets more used to the speed of the NBA game.
  • The Knicks shot 18-57 from 16 feet and out (28 percent). OKC shot just 10-34 (29 percent), but was 20-33 at the rim and was 11-21 from 10 feet and in to 15 feet.
  • Thabo absolutely does not like to pass on a run out. He almost always takes it to the rim on his own. Maybe it’s because he sees it as his only real chance to get points. He turned in another stellar game, playing top drawer defense and also pulled down eight boards.

After watching a sloppy, poorly played Bedlam game where it honestly seemed like nobody would ever score again, let me tell you, the Thunder game was an absolute treat. While watching it, I was thinking, “Ohhh. This is what basketball is supposed to look like.” There was honestly nothing to complain about in this one. When your team puts a game away in the first quarter, it’s hard to be upset about anything. And the fact that this puts OKC at 21-16 and FIVE games over .500 makes me so happy that I could kiss Byron Mullens’ scant facial hair.

I hope we can get Bosh, but maybe Lee is the upper limit of player we can get

Green is a glue guy, but his struggles are beginning to alarm me. I hope he pulls out of it, this is the right streatch for that to happen, but so far, not so good. I think that David Lee would be great here, if Uncle Jeff continues to struggle, why wouldn't someone like Lee fit with the team? Power forward or Center with Ibaka, Collison, and White in the rotation? WOW! Lee seems like the guy we need, lots of rebounds, put backs and hustle plays, he doesn't need to score a lot, we've got other guys for that. It would definately be an interesting pick up after the season.

Is there anything more insulting to an opposing team than playing 5 freshman? How many times has this even happened in a real NBA game?

With the four rooks playing, I really wished they let White play.

White should have played - they should have pulled Durant earlier . . .

Too bad we don't have the same effect on veterans as the lakers and celtics, where you get good veterans at a discount cuz they want to win a championship and play in a high profile city. I would give $14 mil to Lee for 1 year, see if we can't win a ring with him in our lineup at center. But he wouldn't go for that. I just hope we don't overpay green, Durant and westbrook deserve big contracts, but green is what he is and shouldn't be paid in the same tier as the other two, even if he is more valuable to us than most teams.

David Lee Says It'd Be Fun To Play In OKC
More Thunder News

Jan 12, 2010 8:10 AM EST

Knicks forward David Lee was asked by the Oklahoman on Monday whether he had given any thought to playing for the Thunder.

Lee will be a free agent after the season.

"Any team that has cap space, you have to give thought to," Lee said. "I got to spend time with all of three of them last summer at the Olympic camp in (Las) Vegas. They're all good guys. I've known Jeff (Green) a couple of years. Anytime you have exciting young players, it would be a fun place to play."

Even though the Thunder will have $14 million in cap space this coming offseason, Lee realizes that general manager Sam Presti is probably going to save money for Kevin Durant, Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook.

"They're probably saving the Brinks truck for those three guys," Lee said. "At this point there's so much still to be seen. I'm just concentrating on helping this team, which can do some good things, then see how everything pans out this summer."

Wow... That's a really crazy reason that why the Knicks lost so badly. If that's the case, every visiting team should stay there when they come go to OKC...
When you lose, it's usually because of your lack of effort or the other team's good effort. But, ghost story? That's a first time I've ever heard of...

After a 23-win season, the Thunder have reached 21 wins and they haven't even played their 40th game of the season...wow. I can't help but wonder, where will this team be by the time they've lost 59 games again? This year they've lost 16, nearly half the season is over, and they are getting stronger each game. Let's see how long it'll take them to accumulate 43 more losses--the end of next season? You can only hope

I noticed this. It was awesome. There's a reason they made up a lot of points against that lineup, but heck, it's exciting to see them playing together, regardless. Good win last night.

EA is having a vote for which characters should appear on the Thunder roster in the game, also the clippers and kings rosters. Sadly Ibaka isn't an option, but you can choose 3 from out starters and Harden.

Did anybody else enjoy watching FOUR rookies on the floor together in the fourth...I would never have believed that we could put four rookies out there at the same time and coast to an easy win this year...and all those guys are/will be big contributors here for a while

I know many people here might not agree with me, in me saying that Uncle Jeff belongs in for this Thunder team. Like KD he is very critical of himself and will take criticism to heart. Which is why I believe he can improve.

Todd

The way the Thunder started last night reminded me of the way they've started many of their road games this season. They came out focused and intent on getting after it early. I think several of their opponents have had something to do with their supposed 'struggles' at home compared to the road, but it does seem that they sometimes begin home games a bit flat. Not last night. From that first put-back by Westbrook, they were looking to put the Knicks away as early as possible and not let them back in it, like they did with Indiana. Good to seem them not take an over-matched opponent lightly. Seems as if several good teams have done that with New York this year, and got burned for it. Glad we don't have to add OKC to that list.

And it's also nice not to be the over-matched team almost every game anymore. It still leaves me shaking my head a bit, comparing this season with last season. How many years ago was last season, anyway?

I agree about Eric Maynor. He would start on the Knicks for sure.

Defensive Breakdown

****This breakdown is of the abbreviated variety due to time constraints – I took my usual notes during the game, so if you want a detailed breakdown of any player, simply ask me below and I will get to it later today. Thank you ****

The New York Knicks have

a) a decent point guard with speed that can penetrate and kick

b) a power player that can score in the post

c) great passers on the perimeter

d) none of the above

The correct answer is “d” none of the above (and no, Nate Robinson is NOT a point guard). When the Thunder plays a team that possesses none of the above, that team is in for a long night. The Thunder defenders where EVERYWHERE last night. I can count one hand how many shots went uncontested (or at least that what it seemed like). I can hear Brooks in practice now: “CONTEST EVERY SHOT!” And that’s what we did! The key to contesting every shot is when we are scrambling in rotation after a pick or an offensive rebound. Often, you would see our guys flying from across the court to get in the shooter’s sightline. It was truly a joy to behold. I started laughing every time the Knicks attempted a shot because most of the time I knew it had no chance to go in – that’s how great our defense was. The total came up +55 – that is the 3rd highest total of the season (+64, Los Angeles Lakers, November 3rd).

Proof in the pudding (so to speak) is the performance of Knicks forward Danilo Gallinari. He’s the Knicks sharpshooter from outside. He’s 6-10 and he was averaging fourteen a game. I was waiting for him to go off last night – our players never let him breathe. I don’t look at boxscores during a game, but I was thinking while watching that Gallinari was having a bad night – I checked just now and saw he was held scoreless. A quick perusal through my notes showed that two of Gallinari’s shots were blocked and at least another two were contested (he went 0 for 7).

Thabo Sefolosha (+12)

Jeff Green (+12)

Nenad Krstic (+7)

Russell Westbrook (+7)

Serge Ibaka (+5)

Eric Maynor (+5)

Kevin Durant (+5)

Nick Collison (+3)

James Harden (+1)

Byron Mullens (-2)

Despite the score, I thought that Mullens played well. He contested every shot that went off near him – even the shooters that were attempting three pointers. His score is low because many of these attempts happened to go in over his outstretched arms. I look forward to assessing his play in the near future.

the 1st quarter was the Durant and Westbrook show.. at one point, Durant had 15, Westbrook had 12, and the rest of the Thunder had 4 i believe.. while KD is obviously our #1 superstar, Westbrook is making it clear that he's our #2 guy.. i think Green and Westbrook were kinda considered equals, but i think Westbrook has changed that.. i love watching the guy play.. his improvement has been huge.. i love this whole team, but KD and Westbrook are my boys.. my only complaint in this game is that with the huge lead, KD and Westbrook didn't get a lot of minutes.. KD could've gone for 40 again and Westbrook could've hit 30..

Westbrook is 8th in the entire league in assists per game... remember all the hate earlier in there year? there were only a few calm people including myself that just said to have patience... this dude is gettin legit, and legit QUICK

Jeff Green was great on defense but his offense continues to go deeper and deeper into another world of horrible. In five January games so far he's shooting under 40% overall, under 25% from 3pt, scoring 11 points and 5 rebounds a game. :(

Eric Maynor has been a blessing, and once again Presti has worked magic with this roster. Every single player has a role and fits together. I trust Presti 100% with his moves and future moves. He doesn't just make them to make them, he has a purpose, to improve the team now AND in the future.

I don't want to get too excited though because we are in our easiest stretch of games. Can't wait for Wednesday vs the Spurs
