Oklahoma City: The Abyss?

by Royce Young on January 8, 2010 at 3:22 pm 62 Comments

abyssScoop Jackson writing for ESPN.com’s Page 2 with a feature on OKC basketball and the perception it would stink to be stuck here. A good excerpt:

But Oklahoma City has at least one thing that definitely appeals to players. The Thunder has a training facility unlike almost any other in the NBA. It’s where the team practices and works out. To any player who thinks OKC is NBA purgatory, this place will make you thank a higher power than David Stern for allowing a trade to go through.

The facility has become an extreme home away from home. It’s an old roller-skating rink that was tricked out into a state-of-the-art basketball factory where players have been known to hang out hours after practice is over. The oversized chairs and couches are all butter-soft leather. The sound system keeps Dream and Snoop blasting. There are so many flat screens you might almost mistake them for wallpaper. There are also two chefs on site to cook for the players.

If this is the abyss, where does the line start?

Funny thing when you become the main attraction in a place that is supposed to be your purgatory, but the people embrace you so tightly you find it impossible to let them down, or let them go. You begin to realize it ain’t so bad.

“People always ask, ‘Wouldn’t you rather be in Miami or L.A.?’” Durant said. “I always tell them, ‘No.’ This place is perfect for me.”

I do believe I might shed a tear with that closer. But Jackson’s piece is very well done. Yes, we all know Oklahoma City isn’t The Place when it comes to basketball cities. I’ve gone over this. Others have covered it. It’s not news to anyone. But if a player is so shallow and rooted only in his specific interests that he cares about da clubzzz, women and a fancy downtown over being part of a really well run organization, I’m not sure I want you on my team anyway.

The piece mentions how instead of hitting clubs and bars and fighting the distractions of Hollywood or South Beach, these guys make OKC “livable” by sticking close together and constantly hanging out, playing video games, seeing movies and maybe even making lip synced music videos. So in a way, it sounds like, “Hey, there’s nothing to do in OKC except be friends,” but with high character guys on the roster, maybe that’s an advantage. Instead of battling the aforementioned distractions of a big city, these guys build chemistry and a sense of team even off the court. Maybe that’s part Oklahoma City, part their character and personality or a combination of the two. Who knows. But with this current roster, I’d say it’s a good fit.

One other part:

In the NBA, Oklahoma City is considered the abyss. It’s the place where no player wants to be stuck. Nothing against OKC — it used to be Sacremento [sic], Vancouver, San Antonio and Milwaukee. Not only is the Thunder one of the least likely teams to get anyone in the 2010 free agent extravaganza which begins in July, but OKC is generally considered the last place on the NBA map any player would want to play. Not because of the organization or the fact it relocated from Seattle, but because, well, it’s Oklahoma City.

But the city isn’t what it’s made out to be. Like Jon Gosselin masquerading as a good father, it’s been misrepresented. As the Thunder’s veteran point guard Kevin Ollie said, “It’s not Miami or L.A., but it’s cool here. Real chill.”

There is a stereotype about this town. It used to frustrate me, but as I’ve said lately, I’m kind of glad people think we ride covered wagons and our tallest building is the governor’s mansion. If most people really knew what OKC was like and about, then they’d probably move here and ruin it. So keep on thinking what you like.

People haven’t gotten used to the idea of Oklahoma City as a professional sports town. Heck, I haven’t gotten used to idea of Oklahoma City as a professional sports town. But it’s not Basketball Abyss by any means. Especially with what Sam Presti has cooking. It might be known as Basketball Titletown before we know it. Did I just say that? Now I’m just getting carried away here.

I have impossibly difficult taste in women. I like barbies with graduate degrees and liberal leanings. I’m doomed to perpetual bachelorhood because, in Oklahoma, that’s too difficult a task for a man of my means.

I've been looking for a woman with a permanent case of laryngitis, but so far, no luck.

Really it seems to me that we have a duty to get these guys the hook-up. Hell, a serious relationship with a hometown girl might be the thing that convinces one of these guys to stay here in a few years. It's time for the Daily Thunder wingmen to protect the future of this team.

They need to start heading down to Norman for the women. I've NEVER seen them at Campus Corner and it is absolutely loaded with women there.

@Crow
yeah its like the article said the road is for having fun, and also for the getting ladies, go with the old saying dont poo where you eat, if they are just out for poon then they are better off getting some in other cities and make relationships more serious here

Crow

I'd guess the top tier for most players would be

LA, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Orlando, NY, Houston, Phoenix, Chicago

Some other cities might creep into the top group.

Some cities are clearly second tier, some 3rd tier. Some could be disputed.

But money talks and the system distributes pretty well.

Crow
Crow 5pts

The players are in their home city from October thru mid-April at most 140 days. They have home games or practice at least 80 of those days, maybe 100. Not many free days to work with and I assume more sleep in than go real active. Unless you are into the nightlife and your posse in a big way I'd think the city doesn't matter a whole lot. Or least there isn't a big difference between 15th and 30th player favorite city.

@f5alcon

If I were a 26 year old millionaire and I had to pick an NBA city to move to, OKC wouldn't be very far from the bottom. I think that's what is being implied.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

I still think the article is a little backhanded, OKC is not some really boring place, outside maybe 5 or 6 NBA cities the rest dont have serious nightlife

Both LA Lakers and Clippers will be looking for a PG in 2-3 years. Clippers will have money and the desire to sell tickets. By 2012 the Lakers could still be at the top or nearly so and the same or nearly so, or in full rebuild mode. Bynum might eventually move.

If you go UFA to get the best pay day you need a good agent and usually a GM who is desperate.

Crow

They will be RFAs Vega but some team could offer more than Presti will match overall or just structure it in a way that is unacceptable for him to take and fit with his overall plan. Sign n trade are also at least theoretically possible.

I know UFAs are pretty rare these days. Will want to see what David Lee gets.

Nax

Two cities I would look at for comparison would be Salt Lake City and San Antonio. To my knowledge these two cities haven't had too much trouble with FA signings and guys that don't want to be there.....mostly because these teams have a winning mentality and are in the playoffs dang near every year.

The article quotes one un-named player who isn’t impressed with the selection of women.
Whoever he is, he needs to help us out and find a way to bring in some imports. I mean, the rest of us couldn’t get it done, so maybe he can!

He isn't impressed with the selection of women in Oklahoma? Well, maybe the problem is that they aren't all that impressed with him!

People have been underestimating Oklahoma for decades, not just years. This is nothing new. Most of the time though, when they spend more than five minutes hanging around here, they find out it's not only not so bad, it's pretty darn nice. Maybe not everyone finds it to be their cup of trailmix, and that's cool. I do think most people come away thinking, that's not what I was expecting. In a good way. What we do best is pleasantly surprise people.

I'm a straight guy, so I'm no expert, but I'd say that the Thunder has the best ratio of good-looking/average-looking players to repulsive-looking players of all of the teams in the NBA.

I’m going to be honest, some of the thunder players only way of getting a
hot women would be because of there paychecks.

I think that's true of most men who have hot women (Jax excluded unless he doesn't want to be, and that's the last I'm saying, Jax, before it gets creepy).

@Vega
It's a fair point. One would think it might almost be a relief for a certain kind of man to be able to sit at Mickey Mantle's without being attacked by women. I know that's almost sickening to us mere mortals but I imagine it's true.
I do, however, resent your implication that Oklahoma doesn't have disease-infected money-grubbing ho's. I personally am tired of these unfair stereotypes about our great state.

They will be RFAs. Unless one of them goes Ben Gordon mode and accepts the qualifying offer, we can match whatever they get from elsewhere, so I'm not too worried about that.

Crow
Crow 5pts

If Westbrook leaves he'll probably try to get to LA.

Green, Harden, Ibaka might look elsewhere too.

But the team can make it work if they are winning and making as much or more than they can elsewhere. Presti has actually made the culture thing work pretty well overall so far.

Will be interesting to see who gets early extension offers, how big and who accepts or rejects.

Thundercat
Thundercat 5pts

@cwilson
Lol, you do need a manual when your trying understand what they are saying.

Vega
Vega 5pts

I don't think we have to worry about the current players bolting for bigger cities. Presti has put together a bunch of guys that seem perfectly happy in a smaller city. Plus, since many of them appear to be very good friends, that would also indicate that they would want to stay in OKC with their buddies. I'm very optimistic that the Thunder will be able to keep all of the core pieces long-term, however, I'm skeptical that they will be able to lure a big name guy like Bosh.

I don't live in OKC, so I can't say for certain, but I'd be willing to wager that most of the women that NBAers meet in big cities are STD carrying bitches whose only reasons for even talking with NBAers are to f***ed and, as a result, get pregnant so that they can receive child support payments, whereas the women in OKC are more likely to be women with whom an NBAer could possibly have a real romantic relationship with, possibly even a successful marriage, but that is merely speculation by a non-Oklahoman.

(I apologize in advance for the vulgar language. Those were the only terms that immediately popped to mind.)

The buddies I have that are in charge of running the bars and sports bars in town claim that they set their channels to the ones with the most sports options by default. Unfortunately, KSBI and Fox Sports don't often cut the mustard with default programming.

All it takes is a kind request to a busy bartender to job their memory. Or the clueless hostess who is more interested in her txting than what game is on.

@Vince
Ha! Well I intended to start this blog off with a comical approach, but then everyone goes and takes me seriously. I was only being half serious. I don't know anyone who wouldn't appreciate some imports that an NBA type could get.

That tall brunette is my wife. She's a good catch, especially for me. So no, I'm not complaining. Just trying to be funny.

Now you made me admit it, and she isn't even here to see this. What a waste of great brownie points.

You guys are so right about having to have them put the Thunder game on at sports bars, etc. Even though we have a NBA franchise here and I am a huge, huge fan, it still doesn't seem that real to me. Royce :

Rhett :We’re nearly halfway through year 2 of OKC Thunder and we’re literally sitting in a playoff spot standings wise. Why is it that when I walk into a bar or restaurant in downtown and campus areas of Norman I have to ask the bartender to turn it to the Thunder game? The Thunder is the only pro franchise in the state, but all the tvs are tuned to a random college BB game and whatever is on ESPN/ESPN2.

I actually have a near finished column about this very thing. As much as the city has embraced the team, we’re lacking very specifically in this area.

Agreed... I'm out most every night. And when there is a road game I ALWAYS have to ask. I was playing poker with some buddies of mine at a joing called Zekes during the Chicago game, and they had EVERY TV tuned to the Boise game....ugh.

I litterally had to get up between hands to check the score. Not. Happy.

It's nice to see what Kevin Durant and others say about sticking with the team but what else are they going to say? Until he or anyone else signs an extension their words must be taken with a grain of salt.

Players are usually advised by their agents to say 'the right thing' for these purposes. We won't know how they really feel until they have to make the decision.

Weren't you with a really pretty tall brunette the night we met? I was rather impressed if I recall. If that's your girl, I'd quit your carping.

As far as the women in OKC -- I've been in every state on the continent. Oklahoma women are among the prettiest. I'd put Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma in that order. Granted, in sheer numbers the good-looking women in Bricktown on Tuesday night probably don't compare to wherever Dwayne Wade's hanging out that night, but to quote Jason Boland, "those Oklahoma City girls are fine". (And, yes, I moved here for one of them, but I'm not just saying that.)

I also agree with Royce that we should actively work to maintain the stereotype about OKC. I'm from North Carolina, and if you want to see what happens to cities that become "popular", look at Charlotte, Raleigh and Durham (and, yes, Raleigh and Durham used to be separate cities before the distance was filled in by strip malls and McMansions). I'm off my soapbox now.

Tom
Tom 5pts

These observations are absolutely on target. OKC is not at all a vibrant city today. We do not have upscale eateries, grocers, clubs etc nor do we have other entertainment and leisure options available in other NBA cities. Geo Karl said OKC was not an NBA city and I believe this is what he was talking about. The city and state consistently lose it's young people to other cities precisely because of these reasons as well as jobs. It will be very interesting to see if OKC can attract and retain players that will make us a consistent winner. I believe a couple of our current players loth being here although they must keep up the party face. OKC and Oklahoma needs to make great improvements in quality of life or continue to retain this dubious distinction/

I think the best sign out of all these type of things is that the players (like K.D.) on the team are the ones who appear to be offended and even a little agitated by misconceptions about OKC, thereby rushing to defend "their city" and say how much they like playing here and how they can't imagine playing anywhere else.
