The Hornets give OKC a taste of its own defensive medicine, win 97-92

BOX SCORE – ADVANCED BOX SCORE

(Layne Murdoch/NBAE, Getty Images)

(Layne Murdoch/NBAE, Getty Images)

Nick Collison talked all summer about the biggest step for a young team is simply learning to win. Learning how to make plays, learning how to get stops and just learning how to end up with more points than the other guy in the end.

For the most part this year, this group has started to figure it out. And tonight against the Hornets, the Thunder did the hardest part. They got stops. They just never got the ball the basket when in counted. Oklahoma City made only three field goals in the fourth quarter and scored just 11 points.

But after Russell Westbrook’s AMAZING offensive rebound and putback to cut the New Orleans lead down to 93-92 with 50 seconds left, it just felt like the Thunder was going to find a way again. But they reminded us something that we’ve been prone to forget this year: These guys are young (very young), they’re immature and they’re still learning. I mean, have a look out on the floor during that final series of possessions. Ages for the Thunder: 20, 21, 21, 23, 25.

It was a little ironic that after getting a major stop with 30 seconds left and still down one, OKC didn’t secure the rebound. Essentially, an offensive rebound for the Hornets turned out to be maybe the biggest play of the game because Chris Paul scored later on the extra possession to push the lead to three. But OKC did a fantastic job on the glass tonight, only allowing five offensive boards to the Hornets and outrebounded NOLA by nine for the game. For shame the Thunder couldn’t just grab one more.

But still, OKC had possession with 14 seconds left, down three. Scott Brooks called timeout to advance the ball. He inserted James Harden and appeared to draw a play up for him. The ball was knocked out of bounds and with seven seconds left, OKC couldn’t get a look and Westbrook had to chunk a prayer that fell short.

But here’s what I couldn’t help but think: Maybe a timeout was a bad idea. I know that’s the norm, to call timeout and advance the ball. But Westbrook can be dynamic in the open court with a full head of steam. What if Brooks bypassed the break and just flowed right away. Brooks draws great inbounds plays, but I can’t think of too many that worked with under 15 seconds left on a side out. Kevin Durant does not operate well when he catches the ball moving away from the basket. OKC doesn’t set great screens. They don’t space well. So maybe the best option is to toss in to Russ and let him fly up the floor, get the defense to collapse (or if they don’t, take the two) and kick out. Hindsight, of course, but I couldn’t help but think this before the timeout was called.

NBA

Also, I know what some people are going to say. Where was the star? Where was Kevin Durant? Yeah, Durant scored just two points and took two shots in the final frame, but honestly, I didn’t really feel like he disappeared. New Orleans did absolutely everything they could do to bracket him. They doubled and even tripled him. Durant tried to defer and actually made a couple really nice passes. Guys just didn’t make shots and didn’t step up. It really wasn’t Durant’s fault. He’s not the kind of player that can simply just grab the ball and take over. Yet. He’s got to get it in a scoring position and go from there. And the Hornets really never let him get there. Or the Thunder never got him the ball in those positions, depending on perspective.

Notes:

  • Jeff Green’s offensive game returned tonight. He had 20 points (8-15) and five rebounds. He hit two big time 3s and I loved the way he played in the first half. He was extremely aggressive, attacked the rim and wasn’t hesitant at all. But defensively, he was a little soft in spots. He let David West back him down far too easy. It’s not like West was dominant or anything (19 points, eight rebounds), but Green just didn’t put up a ton of fight on the block. Uncle Jeff was a minus-19 for the game, but without his effort offensively, OKC loses this one by 20.
  • I know Chris Paul was back in town and some people wonder if Oklahoma City fans still care about a lot about him and favor him to Kevin Durant. Let me just put it bluntly: I’m not one of them. I think I truly dislike Chris Paul the basketball player. He flops (I mean, the one late in the third. Really? Really?). He cries after every call. He talks a good amount of smack, even to fans. And the biggest thing, he absolutely kills the Thunder late in games. I’m no CP3 fan anymore. Kevin Durant is the king of this town and Chris Paul is one of the enemies that visits every now and again. Yeah, I have a little soft spot for him because of those two years. But that’s the past and he murders the team I root for now. So forget Chris Paul.
  • Paul made plays down the stretch, but after Thabo switched to him in the second quarter, CP3 just had no room to breath. If Thabo isn’t at least second team All-Defense, I’m going to jump into a pool of snapping turtles.
  • Nenad Krstic played a very solid game. He scored 11 (nine in the third quarter) and grabbed six boards in 27 minutes. He really sparked the Thunder offense in the third. Which makes it a little strange that Brooks went with Serge Ibaka for the majority of the fourth. In tight situations like this, Brooks almost always defers to defense and Ibaka was doing a really good job on the interior (HOW ABOUT THAT BLOCK?) and on the glass (seven rebounds). Just a little curious that Krstic only saw a couple minutes in the fourth after he got his jumper going and was even playing really aggressive on the offensive boards.
  • Just four turnovers for KD. Woo! Also, Durant was the only starter that was positive tonight with a plus-one. He had 27 (7-15, 12-12 from the line) and really played his butt off on both ends. It was interesting the Hornets put Paul on him on the last two possessions. CP3 is a bulldog and a great defender though. Obviously it worked out.
  • Russell Westbrook played a solid game. Not a great one (11 points, 5-16, nine assists, four rebounds, three steals and two turns), but he was good enough to get his team a win. He was forced to take shots late in the clock and it wasn’t really his fault. A play didn’t come together and the ball wound up in his hands with three ticks left and he had to force a tough jumper. Sure he maybe could have done better here or there in the fourth, but I thought he was alright.
  • Since when does the Thunder miss free throws, especially in crucial spots? Krstic missed a big and-1. Green made one of two when he had a chance to tie. The team was 18-23 from the line, but those missed are HUGE in tight games. It’s about when you miss and the Thunder missed in a couple key spots.
  • Thabo had seven more rebounds tonight. Is it crazy to say he may be the second best rebounder on the team?
  • There were some, ahem, questionable calls in this one. Let’s just say, I saw them, you saw them, we have our thoughts about it and leave it at that.
  • NOLA turned it over just eight times. For all the pressure defense OKC plays, that’s pretty impressive.
  • Again, after 35 points in the third, OKC came back with just 11 in the fourth. We got a good dose of our own medicine. Not so fun when it’s the other way around.

It was a tough loss and you hate losing at home to a team that was 3-13 on the road coming in. But it just happens. Poor execution in crunch time, poor shot selection and some blunders in key moments. Again, signs of a young team that hasn’t figured it all out yet. There’s no reason to be upset about it. Now, if we see a similar thing Saturday night against the Pacers, well, then maybe you can get upset.

If the thunder stays patient they will be able pick up some players that will fit better with durant and westbrook as the starters. I am pretty sure that green and krstic in the future will or can be some of the best backups in the league. I think whenever we build our team Green should start taking the same role as what Lamar Odom does for LA. Think about how amazingly lethal and versatile Odom can be against teams. His shooting, size, speed, and athleticism kills the 2nd teamers that play against him. Also whenever it comes to crunch time he is a good fit because he can shoot free throws and can still be fairly good big man presence. Green and Odom are both tweeners and play very much similar. I think for the sack of the team it could be huge huge mistake to trade him away whenever his potential role on the team can win us so many games next year or in two years. Thats what championship teams (L.A.) do they stock up on their talent!

Agreed. It is truly amazing how far he has come already! I am happy to be patient and watch him blossom. However,in the heat of the moment with a tight game on, our young, fiery point guard may understandably not be so inclined. I'm sure they hugged it out in the locker room later.

On a side note, I was happy to see the three rooks playing together and holding their own defensively against 4/5 of NOs starters.

I think that Ibaka is going to get better with the alley-oops and fast break passes. For a rookie coming off the bench, I don't think he 'expects' to get a line-drive when he's outside the paint and is trying instead to get position for a pick or rebound put-in. (On that play in particular especially as his gesturing seemed to imply he was looking to set the pick.) Once he gets the playing time and gets more comfortable with the starting PG, he'll adjust. I do think Russ was frustrated as he could've just as easily taken that in.

CP learned well from Ginobili, Luis Scola and Fabricio Oberto. He's given them a taste of their own medicine. Even when plays are dead and over with. LMAO! And I wouldn't bet money on Sefalosho being on any All-Defense teams. He's a good defenisve player though. And yeah, CP talks smack. Especially when smack is being talked to him. All great players have haters so hop aboard the CP3 Hate Train. ALL-ABOARD! LOL!

I also saw Ibaka and Russ "talking" in the tunnel as they left for the half. Ibaka was quite animated.

I remember a while back that Russ and Thabo had similar issues to that of Ibaka and Thabo last night. As Brooks has stated many times, it is hard for point guards to please everyone and that Russ does a pretty good job of accommodating everyone. Thabo and Russ eventually started getting along. I'm sure that Russ and Ibaka will too.

I will defer to your closer view (not much by the way) but what did you think of the play leading up to this? Ibaka had missed SEVERAL under the basket bullet passes from Westbrook and Harden. Clearly Westbrook was frustrated with him and letting him know that.

In my head, the conversation went like this....
Russ- "Catch the F*#@in ball dude, it was RIGHT THERE!!

Ibaka--"But, but, but I didn't KNOW you were going to throw it to me??"

Russ--rolls eyes and sticks out lower lip walking away.....
**Now it also must be said, KUDOS to Serge for his obvious hard work mastering ther English language because he did seem to be pleading his case with much verbosity!

I sit on the baseline by the thunder bench, and I saw a different story there. Russ made a short comment coming back and Serge spent the rest of the time (really animated) asking him what he should have done and trying to explain what he was thinking. Russ didn’t acknowledge him. So while it looked one way from where you were sitting, I had the opposite feeling after what I saw.I like both Ibaka and Westbrook and appreciate the fact that when Ibaka screws up he does his damndest to figure out why. It seems like this annoys Russ (or at least did before half).

I saw the same exact thing, it was like Ibaka wasn't even there by the way Russ was ignoring him.

You definitely get the sense that Ibaka has not really been coached much on offense yet. He and Westbrook really need to spend some quality time together during practice get a feel for how they can work together and get more buckets.

Ibaka does a nice job finishing at the rim and getting back to the basket, they just need to develop a few goto moves instead of playing street ball all night. They are not the Lakers, they can't just make it up as they go along - at least not yet.

@Kev
Very good point. I forget sometimes that he has a nice post game. That must be why the Hornets waited until late to put Paul on him so that the Thunder could not adjust.

But it should be noted, that if you can put a handsy guard on him out on the perimeter, he will freeze up like that and defer to his team mates. These are the sorts of things teams look at during the playoffs when you have time to analyze and scrutinize every detail.

Hopefully, Durant will find a way to adjust when they throw that at him out of nowhere.

Would have been here sooner, but my power was out for several hours last night.

Okafor looked okay. I'm just not that impressed with him.

I thought a major key to the game was all the 3 point shots that the Hornets made in the first 3 quarters. For a while there, they made several in a row, and we would fight to come back, only to give up a few more and get down again. Fortunately, they started missing them in the 4th or we would have had no chance at making it close.

The defense was good enough to win this game. The offense was not. The lack of adjustment and late game play design is still a blemish on our coaching staff. I have yet to see one good late game play from a timeout. Half of them end up with KD launching a 35 foot contested fall away 3, the other half end up as busted plays with someone heaving a prayer.

Russell may catch some blame for his shots, but I don't know how many times the offense just sputtered tonight and NO ONE was calling for the ball. With a few minutes left, we had Russell, James, KD, Green and Ibaka in the game. Russell would bring the ball down, and the other 4 would just stand there, not moving, not setting screens, just looking at Russell to do something. Then, he would make a move and get the ball to someone, and they would just pass it right back. One possession in particular, Russ kept giving the ball to KD, and KD would just give it right back without even making a move. So Russ gave it to him again, and KD held it, then passed back to Russ with no time left on the shot clock at all.

Our stagnant offense and sorry play design really hurt us in this game. 11 points in the 4th is just sorry. The Hornets are not that good a defensive team, but we sure made them look that way. Serge does not have a good feel for an offensive game yet. Of the 100 different ways you see Russell get the ball to an open Krstic, you see 0 ways he gets the ball to an un-open Ibaka. I understand that's the situation, but it hurts us. Ibaka and Thabo really hurt our offensive options.

Bryan :I hope that teams don’t duplicate NOLA’s defensive scheme for Durant. Small guards clearly frustrate him. He has said it himself that he feels like he can’t put the ball on the floor or create any space because they get underneath him.
Let’s hope this Achilles heal goes unnoticed awhile longer.

Brooks should just keep Durant in the post if they are going to guard KD that way - he has a good post game anyway, we just don't use it much . . . that will send that small guy to the bench quickly . . .

I was pumped to go to this game...classic ex-wife meets current wife brawl.

Kevin Durant NEEDS to look for the ball more. Drivin home from the game I couldn't recall one KD corner of the free throw line, coming off a screen, catch and shoot. You know the ones he drains EVERYtime.

It wasn't an amazing game from Green, but if he could do that game in and game out, I would be more then satisfied.

Thabo couldn't hit anything, but that's not what he's there for. I could only hope and pray that he could be that lock down defender that sits in the corner to drain the open three. Didn't like with a min left or so in the forth, he just sat in the corner. Westbrook wouldn't pass to him, obvious reasons, and his defender was sagging way off. Move around!! create some lanes, screen for somebody, DO SOMETHING.

Krstic did what you want him to do...he hit his open jumpers and wasn't too big a liability on the d.

Russell, IMO, had a pretty decent game. His two TO were real early in the game, if I remember correctly, and even though he was 5-16 (given some were late shot/game clock heaves) most his shots were finger rolls and floaters that just did bounce/roll his way. He almost one the game for us. I think we were down one and he went in for a drive and almost got the roll to go. Then NO goes up 3. He gets a huge OReb and put back.

Nick didn't score, but grabbed 7 rebounds(some big rebounds that he grabbed out of NO hands)

Eric Maynor is a great backup PG, he drives to the bucket but nothing like Russel does. Russell drives hard and finishes hard. Eric drives hard and might throw a floater, a finger roll, reverse hands, he has a huge arsenal of moves off the drive, and they are smooth.

Ibaka had a huge block (that the crowd badly needed to get into the game). He was callin for the alley-oop a couple of times and walkin into the tunnel at the half was givin some words to Westbrook all the way. We have some awesome drivers on the team, and if you see the other big come off to double team, throw it up and let Ibaka violently slam it down!!

I really thought Etan could have helped D wise against Okafur and West and grab some Rebs...why does he not see court time? is it cause he isn't part of the future.

Was really hopin to see Mullens play...hard to believe Maynor and Mullens were 4 picks apart.

One play that really stands out is Green driving getting fouled turning his back to the basket and almost making the 'reverse jumper'...very Kobe like..

Paul makes everything a lot worse then it is. but he gets the calls.

I'm not down on Russ, but I'm not giving him a free pass for last night either. On Monday, Russ said he decided he was going to do what he needed to do to get to the rim and not shoot so many jumpers. Last night, he went away from that. Who knows why?

I wasn't impressed with Okafor at all last night. Krstic outrebounded him on a couple of plays where neither of them had great position and fought for the ball. I thought Serge looked as good as Okafor already. They are about the same height. Okafor is a little thicker but Serge already has more range and will obviously get bigger (he's 20). Serge needs more time.

Defensive Breakdown

The score came up below average (+11) which probably surprises no one. There are two keys to defending the Hornets: Stop Chris Paul, and stop David West. The Thunder failed at both tasks.

Defensive MVP – Russell Westbrook (+7)

Westbrook didn’t really keep CP3 out of the lane in the first quarter, so Brooks put Thabo Sefolosha on Paul in the second quarter and thereafter. Westbrook still got time on Paul in the 3rd quarter when Thabo and Maynor were both on the bench, but he didn’t really fare any better. So why is Westbrook at the top of the list? First of all, he had three steals. He picked Chris Paul from behind, and he did the same to David West. The third occurred when he picked off a pass intended for Peja Stoyakovic.

Also, Russell is improving at closing out. The improvement has been visible over the last several games. I have him down for six contests, and most of these came from closing out after he was in help position in the shell defense. I will spotlight one of these instances that occurred in the 4th quarter. There’s about a minute left. Chris Paul (Thabo) is out top. James Posey (James Harden) is in the deep left corner, and Devin Brown (Westbrook) is in the deep right corner. Posey crosses over to the right corner, and Brown drifts up to the right wing. Harden lags behind Posey as he watches Paul. Harden reads the play correctly, as soon thereafter Paul gets by Thabo with a sick crossover. Harden is there to thwart the layup attempt, but Paul is a very efficient player – you rarely see him force anything. He scans the court and spots Posey wide open in the right corner. Remember that Brown is now up, and Westbrook followed suit. Westbrook RACES over to Posey and uses his athleticism to jump and contest the shot – no small feat since Posey has five inches on him. Westbrook has this part of the defensive scheme down, as he was doing this all game.

Serge Ibaka (+6)

Ibaka was definitely a defensive factor in this game – he did better inside than Krstic and Green. Let’s look at the end of the third quarter. Hornets forward Darius Songalia (Collison) is at the top right about twenty feet form the rim. Emeka Okafor (Ibaka) is down low on the left block. Songalia has the ball and puts a move on Collison, as he penetrates to the right. Songalia gets past Collison and Harden is there, but he fades away from Harden, as he puts up a runner from outside the lane. Ibaka comes across the lane and past Harden to swat the ball out of bounds. Ibaka has great timing for a rookie, and this skill is consistently used to help the Thunder defense.

Eric Maynor (+5)

In the first half, Eric got about four minutes on Chris Paul when Westbrook went to the bench. He did well on Chris, and he kept him out of the lane except on the final possession of the first quarter. Conversely, Westbrook and Thabo had issues with this. Why then did Maynor only play fourteen minutes? (That’s basically his average for the season). It makes no sense, and it shows that sometimes Brooks fails to adjust to game situations. This is a game where Maynor should have been playing 20-25 minutes easy. Some would counter that we need Russell for his offense, but Maynor scored more per minute last night than Russell did. Brooks is still a new coach, so hopefully he can get better at adjusting his rotation.

James Harden (+3)

Kevin Durant (+2)

Nick Collison (-1)

Collison played eighteen minutes, and even though his score doesn’t really reflect it, I thought he did a better job inside than our two starting bigs. Blog poster “justin” has repeatedly noted that Collison has a five inch length advantage on Green, and you could tell that tonight. He was able to bother West with his length. He’s another guy (18 minutes) I thought should have gotten more time. I know Jeff Green (41 minutes) stayed on the court because he was scoring well (20 points), but Collison’s defense was missed when he was on the bench.

Jeff Green (-3)

Green had a bad day inside. David West had his way with him. He backed Green down anytime he wanted, and he scored on him repeatedly. Jeff doesn’t have the bulk to bang with West. Okay, you say. David West is (or was anyway) an all star. Well, Green even had issues with backup Songalia.

In the second quarter, Songalia is being guarded by Green in the post. The ball is out top, and while waiting for it, Songalia establishes his post position. He sticks his rear end out and starts to root a lighter Jeff Green out of the way. Green counters by sliding to the side of Songalia – the outside. Usually when post defenders get on the side of the offensive player, they get on the inside of the defender. This would force the offensive player to the outside if they got around. I knew it was over when I saw Green on the outside. Posey fed the ball to Songalia and he spun inside away from Jeff. After the spin he was right at the rim. Nenad Krstic was there to offer some resistance, but Songalia still scored pretty easily.

Nenad Krstic (-4)

Krstic didn’t do any better on center Emeka Okafor or Songalia.

Thabo Sefolosha (-4)

The most encouraging thing I saw last night was right before the half, Ibaka had just fumbled ANOTHER hit-him-in-th-numbers-right-under-the-basket-would-have-made-ESPN-highlight-reel-if-he-had-connected-on-the-dunk---pass

and Westbrook is in his ear walking back to the bench just CHEWING him out! Ibaka is bending way down to listen to Russ and shaking his head the whole time. That really illustrated for me how far Westbrook has come as a floor general. I think he did a good job last night, opposed to the GREAT job he did against Chicago and Utah. Ibaka has a long way to go yet, but he WANTS to get there--you can just tell, and he is moving very quickly.

On another note, my "Go Green" shirt seemed to have some effect, so it might be fun to try a little experiment? If we ALL wear "GO GREEN!" and send our positive energy out there, maybe he'll get over this obvious slump he is in, and blast on ahead to the magnificence he is capable of? When he pulled up and hesitated on that wide-open 3 in the third, I think everyone in the whole arena was screaming at him to shoot the ball, and the sigh of relief when it went in brought the collective temperature up in that place another 2 degrees!

I know we're disappointed in the loss, and are a bit occupied with the drama at the end of the game, but I gotta mention Maynor's sick assist to Green in the second quarter. Damn that was sweet.

Pass, pass, pass (was it three or four) before it lands in Maynor's hands who spots a cutting Green and sends a BULLET pass (probably 200 mph) which Jeff thankfully caught and then goes up immediately and hard with the reverse slam jam.

Sick!!!

Somebody should have that up on youtube. That was a game highlight for me.

I actually like the CONCEPT of trying to get somebody other than Durant to take the last shot occasionally. But, that last play wasn't what I had in mind. My idea would be to use KD as a decoy.

KD didn't touch the ball on that last possession, it was Russ, Thabo and Harden I believe. Plus they were all bottled up in a 8 foot space on the sideline without an idea of what each should be doing.

Oh well, live and learn.

And I second the motion that Ibaka needs to work on catching quick passes for dunks in the paint. He botched like three of them.

Green or Krstic on the court you can probably balance and cope. Both is too much. But until Presti sees that and give Brooks the order it won't change.

Choosing Green and then choosing Krstic to put beside him, I don't think that was very good design. Blah at best. If you demote one or both it would make more sense.

Crow
Crow 5pts

Both methods count Thabo as a net neutral. Neither a major positive force or a drag.

Looking at this if you trade it certainly should be for a better big (better could be better inside scoring, rebounding or defense or a combo) and the draft emphasis should be on bigs too.

What do Green Krstic and Ibaka all have in common? Jumpshooting. Something that seems to have been given too high a priority in the selections. Make it a priority for one fine but three is too much.

Crow

Ibaka will get better, has got better, but this indicates he needs to get even better and so far isn't the immediate overall solution.

DSMok1 in the game thread:

Statistical Plus/Minus ratings for each team’s top 8 players:
Kevin Durant 5.19
Jeff Green -0.48
Russell Westbrook 1.88
Thabo Sefolosha 0.07
James Harden 3.49
Nenad Krstic -2.21
Nick Collison 0.45
Serge Ibaka -3.78

Adjusted +/- agrees that the positive forces are Durant, Westbrook and Harden. And Collison is also in its top set and Maynor is moving into it too. Adjusted agrees that the weak links are Green, Krstic and Ibaka.

Given all that I'd give White and possibly Mullens at least brief looks.

I really hope Serge starts practicing catching any basketball that enters his arm diameter. Like they need to create a pitching machine of sorts (but one that chucks orange basketball balls) and he has to catch 'em. He has his arms up (sort of) but any time someone dishes him the ball in transition he seems to fumble it. Heck, he could just have some DT readers throw balls at him.

welp, there we go. all it took was one loss for the haters to roll out again

Russ gets hate because he has no discipline, is lazy, pouts when things don't go his way and has little leadership qualities. Yes he has a lot of things going for him like offensive rebounding, slashing to the basket, and tenacity, but he is pretty bad at running a team , the #1 thing IMO that a PG must do.

@Royce
I thought Russ played great.

I was just leaving the stadium and all I heard was people ripping Russ. Casual fans don't understand. They see Westbrook with the ball in his hands at the last second and then they blame the loss on him, because the one person they listen to on the radio (Jim Traber) has taught them to dislike him.

Then they get in the car and listen to Humphries completely botch the game of basketball. One caller said something like this "Brooks was dumb for double teaming Chris Paul all the time and allowing Okafor all those dunks." Humphries does not take the time to explain to the caller that it wasn't a double team. It was Kristic being to slow coming off of a pick.

Obviously you expect us to get eaten up on a pick and roll by the Hornets. Everyone in the league gets tore up by Chris Paul with it.

I just hate that everything gets put on Russ. Casual fans and kool-aid sippers just don't get it. Tonight there were several reason we lost, but the blame cannot be put on Russ.

The thing about Russ is he competes all the time. Yes he make alot of mistake sometime but he goes hard. I Know Kev get on him for off rebounding to much, but I say if he didn't we would have lost one and been out a few others game including tonight. The others need to fall inline with that.

@Mark
Yes it is. But I wouldn't read too much into it tonight. Remember that Russ had to chunk it four or fives times at the end of the shot clock because he wound up with it in his hands. I don't think really any of his 16 shots were forced.

Is that the second game in a row that westbrook has taken more shots than durant??

If our bigs were as tenacious as Westbrook on the boards then we would have something. It is tough when your PG is the hardest rebounder on the
team. He and Collison are by far and the way the toughest guy on the teams. I pray that Ibaka follows suit, that euro ball is so soft so I hope he forget that and be the beast I know he can be.

I never really felt like Russ was screwing the pooch though. He never really forced anything. KD just never really was in a position to score. I remember a couple times he got CP3 at the top of the key and Durant passed.

I think tonight was an aberration. KD doesn't disappear near as much anymore.

This loss was Brooks fault. There is literally NO excuse for Durant only taking 2 shots in the 4th. They weren't on him like glue. He passed up the ball way too much.

Also, the final play call was simply awful. Sure it was probably Thabo's fault for passing the ball to the corner. But if Brooks has Kristic or Collison in there they could have set a pick to break KD free for a shot at the top. Instead it was Green attempting to set a pick for KD.

This is sadly a game where Russ is going to get the blame by all the Jim Traber Kool-Aid drinkers out there. KD can't keep disappearing in the 4th quarter of close games. I'm fine with playing the 'were young' card for KD. The problem is that people don't give the same card to Russ anymore.

At least he hasn’t resorted to punching an NBA opponent in the ‘nads like he did when he was at Wake.

Does that mean that somewhere there is a pool of snapping turtles? I don't want to see you jump...but I am curious if it's possible to see that pool. I'd imagine that a pool of turtles looks pretty funny.
