Thunder 99 Cavs 100 recap

by Joe on January 23, 2010 at 10:34 pm 69 Comments

The mighty Thunder gave a valiant effort on the road against the top team in the East and come home on the down side; however earning a split on the roadie at 2-2. How’s that for a little sunshine on a rainy night?

Box Score Advanced Box

I just wrote last night in the recap that I was done with moral victories; that was for last year. I was spoiled by the recent success and I want wins.  With that said, I actually need to contradict  myself and say that I am not too upset about this and that I was pretty happy with the effort if not the outcome. Does that mean I am taking away the moral victory? I don’t know. Whatever. But either way, Cleveland is one hell of a good team and we did a very good job coming back from 14 down and hitting our stride with that 21-8 run in the third. To be right there with the Cavs on the road at crunch time is better than a win over the Nets at home I say.

Cleveland just amazes me. The sheer amount of talent on that team is hard to get your arms around. I guess if money is no object you can buy whatever you want and Cleveland has signed up tons of quality players. Shaq? Well he is a shell of his former self, but he is still a hog in the paint and he changes shots and has a little mojo. He  is still a game changer in his reduced capacity and increased girth. They didn’t have their first or second option at PG because Delonte and Mo were in the MASH unit? No worries, just trot out Boobie Gibson.  He can hit some shots as you probably noticed. He doesn’t need to assist on any shots because Lebron does all of that. Big Z, Varajao, Parker, it’s just a bit mind boggling.

I think the big picture view of the game however was defense. The Thunder and the Cavs are both top five defensive teams in the association depending on how you want to measure it. They are both tied for league best at FG% allowed with 43.6%.  The teams are number 4 and 5 in points allowed per game.  The Thunder are number 4 in defensive rating and Cleveland is number 6.  The Thunder are number 1 in eFG% allowed and Cleveland is number 3. Yet tonight Cleveland held the Thunder to 38% on field goals and 41.3% eFG, while themselves shooting 49% on field goals and painful 58% eFG. The Cavs got it done defensively and the Thunder didn’t.

The little things matter and this game could’ve been had. The Cavs left the door open for us to steal by shooting a ridiculous 50% from the free throw line and committing 17 turns. But the Thunder couldn’t even get a third of their shots to fall in the fourth quarter after some brilliant play in the third.

NBA
  • I was really cringing watching James Harden trying to defend Lebron in the fourth. I know for a fact that Harden watched the Lakers/Cavs on TNT on Thursday because he tweeted about it. How could he forget that Lebron was just unbelievable with that three ball in that game. Then tonight when getting screened by Shaq he chooses to go under the screen to defend Lebron?  Lebron splashed a big wide open three to give Cleveland back the lead at 85-84. You don’t go under the screen on a great shooter, he will pull up and bury the open shot.
  • I was truly shaking my head in the first quarter listening to Bryan Davis and Grant Long. Here we are shooting 2/12 and down by like 10 points and they are talking about how the “Thunder came to play” and how “the Thunder are really dictating the tempo of the game”. Wow. You are getting your butts handed to you on a platter and these guys are smoking the Peyote bud.
  • As I mentioned above the Thunder did a brilliant job of cobbling together a comeback in the third.  They shot 54%, had an 11-4 rebounding edge with no turns. Krstic actually was rather effective with 7 points and 3 boards while getting thrown to the ground about 4 times by the Diesel.
  • Thabo played some good defense on Lebron on a few possessions that I noted, but overall, the King was in his element and wouldn’t be denied. He still shot nearly 50% and had 12 assists, 9 boards and a bucket full of points. Meanwhile the team was -12 when Thabo was in the game….
  • When you are getting handled, your mind tends to wander. For me I thought I would watch Byron Mullens exclusively and see how he dealt with  Z and Shaq ( or rather how he would get dealt with).  Mullens only got 5 minutes, but he made two nice defensive plays. The first was when a Cavs wing tossed up a jumper, Mullens got out in front of Shaq and boxed him out very well and grabbed the rebound. Then a bit later he was behind Shaq when Shaq was getting an inlet pass into the post. Mullens got on Shaq’s right side and deflected the pass and got the steal. He also got a wobbly jumper to fall. Not bad. Had it been me, I think I might have given him some more run and see how the Cavs would try and deal with his shooting touch. He can sink the jumper and Shaq doesn’t like to cover out  of the paint.
  • We didn’t get much out of the bench tonight. 17 points on 16 shots.  Ibaka did have 7 boards and Harden was 6/6 from the line.
  • Jeff Green was pretty inefficient offensively tonight with 11 points on 14 shots; but he was +4.
  • Kevin Durant was Kevin Durant. He’s so good.
  • Russell was pretty good tonight. It would have been a different game if that last jumper would have rattled in instead of out.
  • Serge finally got away with one of his Euroleague in the cylinder tip ins that he gets called for all the time.

No games till Wednesday. Get back to the gym boys and work on the fundamentals.

Well, maybe it's the seven seconds or less system, maybe not, but really Vega, Robin Lopez isn't exactly a budding star. He's not a strong rebounder at all. He hasn't had a single double digit rebounding game yet this year despite playing more than 30 minutes 3 times and 29 minutes once. In fact, he's only had 9 rebounds once.

His rebounding rate (the percentage of available rebounds that he collects) is pretty far down the list amongst 7 footers; close to the bottom at 13.2%. That's only slightly better than Krstic's 12.4 rebound rate, much worse than Ibaka's, and worse than Nick Collisons in every season he's played. He's no banger.

He does block some shots. His 4.9 % block rate is getting into the pretty good territory.

The Suns are a bit better on offense when he is in the game, and a bit worse on defense when he is in. He is a slightly positive player on raw +/-, and a very negative player on adjusted +/-.

If your looking for that anchor in the middle that will protect the rim with defense, rebounds and blocked shots, we could do better.

If we had a chance to get him at a fair price, without giving up too much I would be willing to go for it and plug him into they system, but he's not even close to "all that".

Why would Phoenix trade Robin Lopez?

Crow
Crow 5pts

Looking at play pair +/- derived from data at basketball-statistics.com here are a few things I found:

Maynor very strong with Durant

Ibaka pretty weak with Green or Krstic. Fine with Nick.

Harden positive with almost everybody but just neutral with Green.

Krstic outstanding with Collison and much better with Maynor than Westbrook. Nick fine with both.

Westbrook and Maynor are pretty good together.

Thabo negative on team +/- with most except Nick who he is fine with and KD and Russell with small positives.

Some of these are small minutes, some larger and all are raw so opponent quality will vary somewhat.

Take it for what it is worth to you, if anything.

Also, on draft night, there was a rumor that we were going to send Phoenix's first-rounder back to them for Lopez, so, apparently, Presti has explored acquiring Lopez before.

Vega

@dream catcher
I would. He has been playing very well recently, and he is probably better than anyone we would get with Phoenix's pick. I'd be willing to give them DJ White and a second-round pick as well.

I am confident that we will get Robin Lopez. In fact, I am so confident that I am guaranteeing it.

Is he worth trading for? Haven't watched him......would we give PHX #1 back to them?

Something to keep in mind, and something that even I gloss over, is that EVERY team is about .500 when it comes to tight games. Hollinger has mentioned it numerous times with lots of teams. Even the very best teams to the line in games decided by fewer than 5 or something points. Because, at that point, it really is just luck. Can your team run a better offensive possession than the other? Maybe, but whether someone hits a shot or not is still 50-50. Same with us on our end-game possessions. Certainly we put ourselves in a worse position with bad play-calling and execution, but a game that comes down to the final seconds is always anyone's game.

The thing is, this plays far more into what Justin had been saying that what we love as fans. Guys like Green, who are ultra-clutch, make us excited. We love to see something big happen at a big moment. But, if the premise is true that all games decided by fewer than 5 points are 50-50 anyway (and Hollinger had a lot of data to back it up), it makes you realize that being clutch is a nice way of saying "not playing well enough for the previous 45 minutes." This is the deal with our team. Sure, we will probably pull out as many close victories as we give away (around .500), but we will almost ALWAYS win if we actually put teams away.

We need guys who will put it all on the floor for 48 minutes. We don't have the margin of error for KD to commit a bunch of turnovers every first quarter. We can't get away with Russell only playing well for one half. We don't win more than we lose if Green is only making plays in the final 3 minutes. This is a matter of maturation, and this is a matter of skill. The maturation will come, but the skill we must work/trade for.

Sorry if I'm stealing your thunder for the next lot of bolts but I just came across the best Kevin Durant/Thunder article I've read thus far.

I jus had to share it. Tell me what you think if you haven't already read it.
On a separate matter, seeing as though I live in Australia, what is the best way/not too ridiculously expensive way for me to get a hold of a thunder basketball. Is it probably just the NBA Thunder Team website? I can't find any here and there are none on ebay. I'll probably purchase one and get it sent over with my Durant All Star Jersey (fingers crossed) hahaha.
Keep up the good work and love hearing thoughts and game analysis from all you guys on here.

@Bryan
I think thats a really good point about lack of sophistication. Our offense doesn't have a lot of complex plays, which is alright since we have a lot of playmakers, but in crunch time, when the opposing teams has time to draw up their defense, they need another level of sophistication to get it done, hopefully that will come with more coaching experience and the execution with player experience. Sucks to have such a young team sometimes, if only we could transport the 25 yr old KD here.....

justin
justin 5pts

I believe you're allowed one foul in the final two minutes and every next one you're in the penalty. Jeff Green commited a shooting foul on Anderson Varejao with 38 seconds left so the foul on LeBron James on the rebound meant we were in the penalty and the Cavs shoot free throws the rest of the way. If Jeff Green doesn't foul him there the clock runs out and we lose by two points.

Joe

@Diane
I am not sure I understand either.

Diane

I'm not that good at understanding basketball - I don't understand why James took those free throws at the end of the game. I realized he was fouled but he wasn't shooting and why did Green foul him in the first place. Thanks for helping me understand.

Vega :I hope that Phoenix blows up the team at the deadline. If they do, we could possibly get the rebounding center we’re looking for. We could give them their first-round pick back in exchange for Robin Lopez, who has been a monster ever since he started to get minutes.

they have no reason to give up Lopez - he's getting better every game and his salary is LOW . . . also, they are still very much in the playoff race . . .

if they could fins someone dumb enough to take on Richardson's contract, then that's a different matter . . .

Shots will fall from time to time. Memphis has a lot of talent in that starting line up... and they got lucky with that deep three. 7 times out of 10 that shot rims out like Atlanta's last attempt.

And the Thunder are something like 7-10 in one possesion games... so it's not like they ALWAYS fail to close out games.

But for now, they lack that level of sophistication that good playoff teams have, as evidenced by their transition D when Gibson hit that game winner. Watching the replay, it wasn't just Westbrook that was Lebron-watching, it was the whole freakin team.

And like I said in my rather lengthy post above, it really comes down to coaching. I think Presti needs to get Brooks some help for the offensive phase of the game.

Another interesting article... this time on Brook's focus on fundementals.

The two articles I posted really put things back in perspective. These guys are still learning the game and still focusing primarily on defense. It's going to take some time and some tough luck for these guys to see what it takes to win.

I think you can put me in with the group of fans that are a bit pissed.

I realize that the Lebrons are just good. But the Thunder had yet another chance to take down a top team and didn't get it done. As some said already, the Cavs left the door WIDE open. Random thoughts:

WESTBROOK: he gave both his fans AND his detractors fodder last night. While he really did some nice things and helped keep the Thunder in the game, he also made some bonehead plays... like losing track of Gibson while Lebron-watching. Were the Cavs not my third fav team, I'm pretty sure I would have choked myself when Mo Williams did that stupid "goose neck" three pointer symbol that they do. Lame guys, truly.

GREEN: I've been apologizing for Green for weeks now. And while I still have hope that his shot will come around, he really could have changed the complextion of last night's game if he had just matched the league average for shooting pecentage - in the National Basketball League for the Blind.

THABO: I love the way he got all up in Lebron's grill late in the game and kept him from being able to pull up or get to the cup. LOVED it. But it didn't matter. Lebron just added a few more assists to his total and made Thabo a non-factor on that end of floor... and we all know how Thabo factors in on the other end.... If Thabo can't stop his man from making the play, what's the point of him being out on the floor? Just sayin. I love ya Thabo, but you have got to get some offensive game if you want to help your team win.

BROOKS: The bottom line is this: We can all come on here and bitch and complain about how players made mistakes or how we need another shooter or low post presence... but these are COACHING LOSES!! I know that you can only give a young group so much to think about (hense the concentration on defense), but at some point you have got to work on that half-court offense and run something besides that isolation play or high screens for mid-range jumpers. I get that it's partly a personell problem because we don't have anyone that can get back to the basket with consitency, but come on.... I've seen more sophisticated street ball.

incidentally, I have to bring up something that bugs me and it popped up again last night...

Jeff Green has a last name which is too common. Other teams have a Green on their roster and it messes with my head during games. I turn away for a moment to deal with something and then come back and hear the announcer say "Green with the rebound" and I pump my fist and say "yeah!" until I realize it's the other team. Or I hear "the foul is on Green" and I'm like "dammit" until I realize, no, it's the other one, then go "pheww!".

Last night it was Daniel Green. The Sixers have Willie Green. The Kings have Donte Greene.

Hey, when you hear the name 'Durant' or 'Westbrook', do you have to stop and think about which one is being referred to? Of course not. And how many teams have a 'Krstic' or 'Ibaka'? And as for 'Sefolosha"... well, nuff said.

But Green is too ordinary and common. Jeff, I love ya man, but you need to change your name. It's for the good of the team. You need to have a distinctive name like the rest of the roster.

I suggest 'Greenington'

I can deal with the 1 and 2 point losses this year because you can tell that the team is improving. However, Cleveland was missing some key players AND had a horrible night at the free throw line, but yet they still found a way to win. Its kinda frustrating, but I can deal with it for NOW as long as the Thunder keep showing improvement.

I think that this pic of

LeBron and Kevin next to each other

sort of typifies their different personalities.

LeBron has the casual demeanor of a king on his court, bored with the jester's show, waiting impatiently for the servant to bring him his grapes.

KD is humble, hungry, serious, and focused.

The problem with Westbrook's shot wasn't that he took it. He's been pretty accurate from that area along the paint. The problem is that he rushed the shot, which he seems to do when he feels like he has to make a shot. It might be at the end of the game or during a game where the Thunder has some ground to make up. Its not dissimilar from what we've seen in that stretch of games where Harden started trying to createhis own offense. Sure, Russ isn't a rookie, but you don't see him out of control nearly as much as last year. If we're willing to give KD some time to develop the last-second shot, let's give Russ some time to develop the shot just before it.

I remember when Kobe was in his 2nd or 3rd year and he airballed and bricked a bunch of game winner attempts, so it's cool maybe next year, but ya know gotta learn the art of the clutch shot boys. John Wall is money at the end. Maynor was money in college, Ray Allen, KObe, Lebron, Nowiskti, last two minutes is all that matters.

Colin :
I dont want to be nit-picky, but you mention Harden going under the screen in the fourth and using the Lakers game as a reason you don’t go under. Well, LeBron was 1-9 from the three in that game (1-16 in his last two games). Its really pick your poison. If you try to go over the top, LeBron will just go around. And if you go underneath, LeBron will pull up. There’s almost nothing you can do. But I would say Harden played the percentages, considering Bron had not shot well from deep, and he is automatic from the rim.
Also, you mentioned the basket interference that Shaq had in the first half. The Thunder had an offensive goaltending that they did not call in the fourth quarter. So if they call both like they should have, the Cavs still would have won.
Overall, LeBron did what I thought he would do: looked to score, but was also trying hard as hell to get his teammates shots where they could make them. Shaq was downright unstoppable in the post. Sad part about this game, for Cavs fans at least, was the fact that the Cavs could have had this in control if they made their free throws (and didn’t turn it over so much).

A very good point, and of course it's always "pick your poison" with Lebron. But in watching that Laker/Cavs game I saw Lebron nail countless deep shots in the fourth. I thought more of them were threes, but they must have been long twos (I was admittedly doing something else at the time and was sort of distracted and only half watching).

t w
t w 5pts

Westbrook keeps missing the game winners, the shots before the last gasp shot. He could have won several games if he hits the 10-18 footers he keeps missing at the end, I think Harden can be a clutch shooter soon though. Maynor is clutch too, put him in at the end. Maynor, Harden, Sefolosha, KD, Green, and Ibaka should be the win the game crew the last 2 minutes.

Joe

This from the Cleveland plain dealer this morning:

"Cavs ought to be quite thankful they don't see the Thunder again. Probably don't want any part of this team after the All-Star break. Oklahoma City is 24-20 and has 20 of its final 38 games at home. The Thunder's last four losses have been by a combined five points. The team is taking its lumps and learning along the way. It is massively better than it was last season and next year when it plays the Cavs, the games are probably going to be on national television.
Kevin Durant is going to finish in the top five of MVP voting this season. Soon, maybe even as early as next year, he and LeBron are going to be the challengers for the MVP Award at the end. It will be very interesting to watch how the Thunder finishes -- its last 14 games are brutal, but it is only going to grow between now and then. Keep an eye on that team."

At this point the most likely reason Durant wouldn't stay put would be if for some reason they don't make the playoffs this season or next. If he has to wait til year 5 he might have looked around more than he has so far and once he starts doing that as an unrestricted free agent, with everyone throwing love and everything at him, it would be a more difficult situation.

So bottomline you go to make the playoffs next season. With a major change or not. But at least make it into the playoffs. And next year will probably be tougher in the west than this season.
