Earmuffs: Kevin Garnett compares KD to MJ, but not in a nice way

by Royce Young on March 31, 2010 at 11:14 pm 48 Comments

Following the Thunder’s big win over Boston Wednesday night, Kevin Garnett was frustrated with the fact Boston took just 17 free throws to OKC’s 34, with Kevin Durant taking 15 of those. So he decided to articulate it on live television. Cover your ears if you don’t like bad words.

If you prefer not to watch and hear Garnett’s potty mouth, here’s what he said: “I thought we were playing Michael (expletive) Jordan the way he was getting the whistle. Durant damn near shot more free throws than our whole team. That’s the game.”

With Durant dropping 37 points in Boston, I can understand the confusion for Garnett, but it has nothing to do with the whistle. Garnett has a big mouth so this is nothing new, but with OKC winning one of its biggest games of the year over the Celtics, hearing KG go sour grapes is kind of satisfying. As Garnett griped, all I can think of is this. Mmm, tears.

I just saw a Kevin Durant interview talking about his ridiculous scoring streak. Talks about his work ethic, team, and coach. The guy is humble as well. check it out.

FT were a factor but not the deciding factor. It was a combination of FTs, Some poor calls, and piss poor defense what we gave up 5 offensive rebounds in five minutes in the 2nd quarter. To me thats awful. Thunder played great won't take that away from them Durant was feeling it, but our defensive was lacking. We were shooting 70% at the half and Thunder shooting in the 50s, and the announcers wonder why we were behind easy we blew hard on defense. Kristic and Westbrooke played great. Kristic kept possession for thunder a lot with his offensive boards, hurt us a lot

I don't think Garnett could look more defeated than he does in this video.

Not just 45-9 free throw disparity in the Cavs/Bucks game, but the foul call totals REALLY show that, um, let’s just say you could argue that some preferential treatment went down.
29 fouls called on the Bucks.
12 fouls on the Cavs. Yes, that’s right, 12.
That’s a 17 foul disparity that you honestly can not rationalize away under any circumstance when ZERO Cavaliers’ players record more than 2 fouls for the entire game and FOUR Bucks’ players record 4 fouls or more, with every Bucks’ player logging a foul in the game.

The Cavs play dirty to me, I don't think at all that the refs are in favor of the Thunder. Refs bet on games..............

It's sad to see Garnett, one of the coolest players ever in the league, turn into a washed up, cry baby version of himself.

The Celtics are watching the train pass by them, and it's not stopping anymore.

It shows the celtics overall arrogance... after all, HOW IN THE WORLD can someone get more calls than us? There MUST be something wrond, right? We're the world intimidators, everyone fears us...

hmm, not anymore.

Let the record show that I completely agree that slap on Pierce was a bad call. And a big one too.

@Boston Sports Buzz
Play some defense on Jeff Green at the end of the game, maybe make some 3s at the end, maybe play some defense throughout the game seeing as how your team shot nearly 70% through three quarters...but you are probably right - it was the free throw discrepancy.

Kind of like Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers talking about his poor night's sleep.

"Soft mattress?"

"Yeah, it could have been the soft mattress. Or the midnight rape. Or the nude gay art show that took place in my room. One of those probably added to the lack of sleep."

somebody call the wahhhbulance. I have said it before and ill say it again. I hate boston. They are sore losers and even worse winners.

After the last 2 games they havnt been able to beat lower seeded teams in the west, they just know they cant beat the cavs, magic and maybe not even atlanta or the bucks. They need to go back to rebuilding mode around rondo.

A (considerably more) level-headed Boston fan posted this on ESPN.com, and I thought it was interesting:

"An excellent illustration of why the C's offense needs another foul-drawer--a hungry, young player that can create matchup problems and take a beating. With Garnett and Pierce's modest decline, the presence of so many jumpshooters, and Rondo's limitations as a foul shooter, the C's are not very good at grinding out the opposition going to the hoop, which I think is partyly to blame for their offensive inconsistency. Ballhandling and athleticism don't have off days (just ask the Hawks), and good free throw shooters don't often.

This year, the C's are averaging 1.1 less three throws attempted than their opposition. In contrast, in 07-08 they averaged .2 more per game than their opposition, and 1.5 in absolute numbers. While this relative inability to get to the line isn't the whole picture (nothing alone is), it surely is part of it.

The loss of Powe certainly hurt, as he averaged 3.4/game in 07-08 despite playing only 14.4 minutes. Fortunately, Ainge's pursuit of Maggette (he of the career 7.1 ft attempts/game) suggests his awareness of this weakness and concern, but, unfortunately, it has not been addressed. Let's hope it will this offseason."

Either way, I only saw KD go to the line once on a whistle that probably wasn't a foul, and it was the play that Boston Sports Buzz referred to. Great win for OKC; I'm proud of our guys.

Chris
Chris 5pts

Don't you, you know, still have to make the free throws for them to count? They are not "automatic points" like some Boston fans like to think. I imagine if OKC had a less impressive FT% night, say made 21/34, would there even be a discussion?

Tell KG, Doc Rivers and the rest of the Celtics that they were only called for FOUR more total fouls than the Thunder.

25 fouls for the Celtics.
21 fouls for the Thunder.

It's just that the majority of the Celtics' fouls came during the act of shooting and piled up quickly at the start of the quarters, putting the Thunder in the bonus, whereas the Thunder's fouls were primarily on the floor and spread out more evenly throughout each quarter, thus not putting the Celtics in the bonus as early.

The Paul Pierce ball slap foul was the only blatant blown call I remember. They hated the rip move too, I have a feeling that's going to be addressed by the league in the offseason. Lots of players are doing it.

Did anyone see the postgame interview KD had with NBATV? When KD was asked about the MVP race, he said his only concern is Oklahoma City and getting to the play-offs.

I might have to name my next born child after KD.

Daniel

Wah wah wah, Celtics can cry me a river.

By the way, did anyone see the free throw discrepency between the Cavs and Bucks tonight? I believe it was 45 to 9. But no mention of that anywhere...

P
P 5pts

@herro

sour spilled milk ... Durant gets that move off every game. It's basically the defenders fault for attempting to hand check him from 25 feet away. While he's facing the basket! (like I said the celtics push, pull, grab, hold- constantly. & I'm not mad at that, it's basketball, if they allow you to get away with it you should, but you won't get away with it every night!)

the truth is, KD is at the top of the league in free throws ... Maybe what really is the case is the celtics had absolutely no one who had even a slight chance of bein able to defend him! Or did you not notice that!

MartzMimic
MartzMimic 5pts

What makes the whining even funnier is that the Celtics were only called for four more fouls than Oklahoma City. As I recall, Boston was shooting so well that a lot of the calls against the Thunder were on made shots.

P

Sorry for the wordiness!

Thunder gets me extra hype !

&@punch -- that bron thing is funny, I wish I wouldve seen SC this morning now!... That's the real beauty in KD too - aside from otherworldly talent, desire for greatness, & no ceiling to his potential, the biggest thing may be humility - which so many stars lack ... Brons ego is getting irksome, & people around me tend to think karma will have something to say about his boasts

Herro
Herro 5pts

@P

Actually, the refs called a lot more questionable fouls for the Thunder. At one point, Durant was given a three-point FT which was complete nonsense to be honest with you.

Good win for the Thunder, but this game deserved to be for the Celtics. I've never seen a team that was 60% FG lose a game before. That's shocking. Free throws kept the Thunder in this game, big time.

P
P 5pts

Oh yeah. Late pass. I was fortunate to attend Tuesdays game. It's likely been said a million times, but this team, this coach, this season, this group of players, Durants leadership & progression, Westbrooks progression to the all star level play --- it's all simply amazing!

I think it was the first sixer game I watched all season! (I went to the reke Evans game but he was on some back home unfocused time, so we mainly played the bar courtside!)

it's great to be a thunder fan. & I'm probably one of the few who believes that they really don't need anything. No other players that could possibly harm the chemistry of the rotation. Just time to grow & watch I take us to the upper echelon of the west/league.

My thoughts from that game --- the thunder missed at least 10 point blank shots, yet basically won by twenty. Unreal!

P
P 5pts

KG has always been a gave of mine. That said, it's more & more difficult to watch him every nite. in my opinion, Durant got 1 questionable call, the foul on pierce in the 4th ... Boston grabs, holds, pushes ALL game, ALL over the court.

The reality is you were up 1, at home, with less than 3 minutes to play. & you couldn't stop them... Kevin may have gone to the line once in that span (I think, the pierce foul). But that's what lost you the game

I also enjoyed Sportcenter teasing Lebron for trying to get free throws at the end of a game they'd already won and time had expired, saying he was thinking about the scoring title that he claims to not be concerned with.

Yeah you’re right, sour grapes for the Celts. Pierce totally hacked Durant there late, and by totally hacked I mean knocked the ball out of your butt buddy’s hand way before he acted his way to the line.

It's nice to have reached the point where we have some non-Seattle haters commenting here. Boston Sports Buzz, it's hilarious that you're commenting about someone acting while mentioning Paul Pierce.

We'll have to agree to disagree than. Only the call on Pierce was questionable in my mind, and on the replay he clearly got part of his arm before he made contact with the ball.

I don't agree. Lebron gets a ton of FTs, but I disagree with a LOT of them because it seems like he gets them just because of who he is. And in this game, I thought that KD did get some of that superstar treatment, which is NOT a concept I'm on board with, be it Kobe, Wade, Lebron or Durant. I find it personally just annoying.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy we won, but I'm also trying to stay somewhat objective.

Frustrated comments from a frustrated Champion. The man don't like to lose, period. It's Kevin Garnett what do y'all expect? Seriously, no big deal here. And truth be told, it might not even be the loss that's pissing him off, just the sucking of the whistle. Being a big man in the paint I'm sure he doesn't want the refs to get so whistle friendly 3 weeks before the playoffs. Let's move on.

Brad
Brad 5pts

@Ben
Of course FT's impacted the game, but KD deserved nearly ever one they got. FT's are apart of basketball, and when you can force them you're a superstar.

I don't think we can deny that one of the key reasons that we stayed in the game was KD's frequent trips to the line, and tonight I thought that some of the fouls they called against the C's were soft. Garnett DOES have somewhat of a point, even if I hate his guts.

One thing that the Cs can't chalk up to the FTs is their poor offense at the last few minutes, when FTs weren't a factor. So to sum up...

Did the FTs impact the game? Sure. Did the FTs ultimately determine who won when it came down to the last few minutes? No way in hell.
