Jeff Green and the Thunder sink the Celtics, 109-104

BOX SCORE

Oklahoma City was right where you’d want to be on the road against a good team. And I have no idea how. After three quarters, the Celtics were shooting 67 percent from the floor and the Thunder were shooting 48 percent. Yet somehow, the game was tied.

So many times we’ve seen this young Thunder team walk into this situation and completely clench up. The offensive execution goes first, then they give up a few big rebounds and finally, the just can’t knock down the shots. Most times, the finger is point at Kevin Durant if he doesn’t take over late for his team. The game in Portland comes to mind. But tonight? How does eight HUGE fourth quarter points, four rebounds and stellar defense do you? KD owned the game when he had to, scoring 20 of his game-high 37 in the second half.

KD played every minute of the fourth quarter (and 44 minutes total), and just had the look and demeanor of a guy you could rely on to win you a tight game. With the playoffs only weeks away, this was a good primer for him. Boston grabbed, pushed and pulled Durant around every screen, but KD never wavered. He was focused and determined to win his team a close ball game and that’s exactly what he did.

And while Durant’s performance was a thing of art, former Boston draft pick Jeff Green stole the show with two big time 3s. Honestly, when those two treys left Uncle Jeff’s hand, you knew they were going in, didn’t you? Hes hit so many of those shots this year and after he came up short on three good looks against the Blazers, Green wasn’t going to miss again. He knocked down 3-pointers on consecutive possessions, essentially killing the Celtics.

There’s just a number of things to applaud about this one. The awesome lock down defense in the last half of the fourth. The top notch offensive execution. The defensive rebounding by Nenad Krstic and Durant was terrific late. And Thabo Sefolosha did a wonderful job sealing off Boston’s closer in Paul Pierce. This isn’t the biggest win of the season, but it’s definitely a very, very good one. In my mind, this completely restores the confidence I had in this team and for them, it gives them back a little of that swagger they were walking around with in early March.

Notes:

  • Once again, the Thunder bench came up extremely big. The gold star goes to Eric Maynor who had eight points and four assists off the pine. He played the first half of the fourth quarter and did an outstanding job distributing and controlling the game.
  • Had OKC’s jumpshots not been falling, this might’ve been very different. The Celtics outscored OKC 56-40 in the paint and it was worse than that for most of the game. But guys were hitting shots and sometimes that’s all it takes. Amazing how making an open jumper can make your offense look very good.
  • A big win for OKC tonight was Russell Westbrook outplaying Rajon Rondo. Rondo was good, but Westbrook was better. Russ started the game 5-5 and never looked back. He finished with 21 points and 10 assists to just two turns and was a menace defensively swiping at everything and breaking up passing lanes.
  • Did it feel like there was an inordinate amount of off-the-ball fouls tonight? I think Nick Collison was called for three all by himself.
  • Speaking of Nick: He was called for a blocking foul early in the second quarter because his heels were on the restricted line. Nick popped up, clearly in disagreement and looked at the official and said, “Let’s watch it and see.” I liked that.
  • We hadn’t seen KD’s rip move for a few games, but he saved one for Ray Allen late in the third quarter. Durant did a really good job selling his shooting motion after it too.
  • OKC got another throwback night for a washed up player. Rasheed Wallace flashed back to 2001 as he hit his first seven shots en route to 18 points. But the one he missed was a big one – a WIDE open 3 late in the game that would’ve put Boston up.
  • Despite Boston shooting 59 percent to OKC’s 50 percent, the Thunder still finished with a higher offensive efficiency (122.5 to 116.9).
  • I’m going to avoid saying much about Kendrick Perkins, but geez man. Smacking Nenad on his hurt finger? That’s pretty low.
  • James Harden had just five points but I thought he played a really smart game. One play in the first quarter really highlighted his intelligence. Rondo was trying to feed the high post to Paul Pierce after a switch that put Maynor on Pierce. Harden read it and timed his break perfectly, stealing the pass and finishing it with a dunk.
  • This was an odd game. Both Boston and OKC are really good defensive teams. Yet at halftime the game was 61-57 and the Celtics were shooting 70 percent.
  • I’d say KD had a nice MVP-ish moment: A big possession in the early fourth for OKC turned into a scramble. Durant dove on the floor and saved possession for the Thunder and OKC ended up with two points. He wanted it tonight.
  • A great tweet from Noam Schiller after Durant’s sexy 3-pointer in the third quarter: “That Durant shot was so smooth that I saw my own reflection in it. And I don’t care if that sentence makes no sense.”
  • Paul Pierce is probably the biggest foul faker/exaggerator in the league. He yells after every shot and always throws his arms up. But kudos to him because it works. You won’t hear me complaining about any officiating tonight though. OKC shot 34 free throws to Boston’s 17. Durant took 15 (and hit all 15) by himself. So I’m sure there’s some Celtic grumbling.
  • Is it just me or does it seem like a lob to Durant is there almost all the time when he’s running that baseline screen play?
  • OKC has officially doubled its win total from last year with 46. Let that soak in for a minute.

I thought a 2-1 road trip would be tremendous for the Thunder. And that’s already been put in the pocket. Of course you’d rather see the Thunder play better defense, but when you win, it really doesn’t matter all that much. Especially when it’s on the road against Boston. This win puts the Thunder back in the conversation for seeding in the West instead of just resigning to seventh or eighth. Again, this wasn’t the biggest of the season. But it sure has an important feel to it. Jeff Green hit shots, the team got stops when it needed it and Durant took the game over late. It was a little taste of the postseason and the Thunder executed and got it done. It may not have been the biggest win, but it might be the most important. If that makes any sense.

What a great win. now we have beaten every team in the league except the cavs this year.

Russ does get some time with Collison/Ibaka - he plays the same way . . . and Ibaka is not that great of a defender anyway - he's overrated because of the blocks - he's out of position more than Krstic . . .

@kev

I know Russ isn't that great defensively (I wouldn't expect him to be Deron Williams in his second season). I'm not arguing that he is or anything, but it'd be easier for our perimeter guys to defend better if they had the help behind them. The difference between how we play defense on the perimeter with Collison / Ibaka in the game is night and day between how we play with the starters in. Much greater room for error.

It's extremely difficult to be a perimeter defender in this league.. even Thabo, who's great, gets beaten off the dribble a lot.

I just want to see how Russ looks defensively with Collison in the middle or Ibaka...

Maynor and Ollie play much more often with Krstic out of the lineup.

good point . . .

still - Green is a GREAT help defender . . .

we just have to agree to disagree . . .

I know you don't like Krstic - but you criticize him more than RW - and RW's defense is much worse . . .

Boston shoots 60%, Rasheed Wallace hardly misses (and actually posts up, not just bombs away from 25 ft), Boston's Big Three all play, we get basically nothing from Ibaka and Collison, and we win on the road at the Garden? Plus KG whines after the game and compares our star to the greatest player to ever lace 'em up?

I love this game!!

@Kev

I agree that Russ gets beat too much but often the help isn't in position to really help, especially when he's playing with Krstic / Green, which is most of the time.

@Brad

Yes and it's the point. Starting two guards who can't shoot and three front line players who can't rebound doesn't seem like a balanced strategy to me. Thabo has plenty of utility off the bench.

Kobe and LBJ get free throws in diff ways usually(esp with Kobe getting older) LBJ goes to the body while going to the bucket. Kobe tries to get you to commit to far and draw a shooting foul. KD I see being in between but leaning more to Kobe drawing fouls. Is KD getting more foul calls then last year...no numbers but i would assume, but he is also getting smarter ans wiser.
At the end of the day if you can piss off a world champion by beating them at the end of the game...your doing something right!!
Why Not?

It is strange that many people think KD should not get the number of FT he gets because he is thin.And another think it is Stern'plan to create new star.
Last season,KD gets 7.5 FTs and this is 11th in NBA.KD was thinner than now and thunder is very bad.They dont know this.

If we had legit weak side help I think many of the times Russ gets beat off the dribble they don’t end up in scores. One of the plays where Rondo blew by him Krstic was about eight steps late to help.
In today’s NBA, with no hand check, you’re going to get beat off the dribble a lot (just look at what Russ did to Rondo, a good defender). We need someone on the interior besides Serge to be the help defense. Krstic should have a lower score IMO because he was useless in this capacity much of the night.

and if its the play im thinking of - Krstic's man was going the other way to set up a pick - he wasn't out of position - he was following his man . . .

remember, on the same team with the same backline help, Kevin Ollie and Maynor have much higheer defensive sccores - the problem is not with Krstic, it's with Russell . . .

you have a point - but Russ gets beaten way too much - the perimeter guys arent supposed to rely on backside help, they need to keep their man in front - Deron Williams is an excellent defensive point guard - he fights over screens and oncentrates to keep his man in front of him - RW (tonight) acted like he couldnt care less . . . and that example had nothing to do with a handcheck, RW wasn't paying attention . . .

Start Ibaka and Harden, bring Green and Sefolosha off the bench. I agree he could work out nicely in that role, especially if he can come in and play PF against winded starters and reserves.
Hopefully Ibaka and Harden can get to that point..

If you don't start Sefolosha then you don't play him... period. By the time Sefolosha would get in the game the oppositions best player would be on the bench. If Sef isn't guarding the opposing teams best wing player than he serves absolutely no purpose.

Just watched Kevin Garnett whining like a baby on the news in Boston. The fans we met after the game weren’t as bitter as he was!!!

I saw that too. There isn't a team in the NBA that gets away with physical play more than the Celtics, but yet they complain about calls more than anybody. They play like the early '90s Pistons but complain like a Euroleague team. I lost a lot of respect for kG today.

Green’s still a problem defensively and on the boards but he’s definitely proven to be able to his the big shot. I don’t think he’s a 38MPG player though..

he isn't the best matchup defensively, but he is the best "contester" on the team.

What do you think of the "starter off the bench" idea? 30-33 minutes per game, subs in with the second unit and plays Manu minutes? I think it would be ideal for getting the most out of him, and he gets to play starter minutes while also having a considerably better chance at individual awards (specifically 6th man of the year). Maybe he never makes the big bucks that way (which does matter to players), but if he's looking for big bucks, he's never going to get them at the production level he's at right now anyway.

I agree with everything you said, and I think because Durant wants him there and the team is successful he might be inclined to stay with the team in that role if they place him there. Of course, a lot of guys want to be #1 guys when they know they shouldn't--I guess to just get more $$$--but hopefully Green will be willing to take less/keep the same minutes. And he'll just about have to if they stop playing him at PF as much.

Alright, I gotta see how I can get tix for Thunder-Mavs Saturday night @ the AAC... @Keith

Keith

@andrew
I think he has several good years left if teams (and he) accept that he is just a good (not great) player. He will still be a better center than most teams in the league have for a few years, and that's not nothing. If he retires early, it will be because he has had his fill of basketball, not because teams don't want him.

I'd take a 35 (in two years) year old Duncan over Krstic right now. He is too smart and too fundamentally sound not to at least be useful.

Keith
Keith 5pts

@Clifton
Green is a perfect guy to become the next Manu. Not the flopping, but the "starter off the bench" role. For all his talent, he's still a poor defender and questionable PF. But that all could be significantly improved off the bench. He could be a scoring dynamo against opposing teams' benches and have his defensive issues masked. Obviously he's been very good at the end of games, and he would definitely be in then (just like Manu). But taking down his minutes to 30-33 and setting him up with better matchups for much of the game would be ideal.

andrew
andrew 5pts

I could see Duncan retiring early, like maybe after next year instead of hanging on until nobody wants him...

We lost both our games to Cleveland, they are the only team in the league we haven't beat this year. We haven't beaten them since we moved to OKC actually. Durant beat them his rookie year, but not since.

Duncan has a good perspective on things. He even admitted at the start of the year that he's slowing down. I think he's exactly the sort of superstar who will be content to play a lesser role near the end of his career.

Clifton

I sure hope this game gives doubters a lot more perspective on what Jeff Green is all about. Honestly, I think he could go to Indiana and put up the same numbers Danny Granger is having this year, he's got the same amount of talent. But he's an unselfish guy, and he is willing to be a third or even fourth option many nights, so his numbers don't come CLOSE to showing his value. On top of that, he's been super clutch this year. I started following the Thunder because of Durant (living in TX), but I really have come to appreciate Uncle Jeff's contributions to the team. Durant gives them their edge, and Green is who I believe drives their chemistry. Great future ahead for these guys.

Garnett is getting awfully close to becoming the final years of AI. He has a hall of fame resume, and a ring to boot, but he's not the guy he was. He's essentially a mid-range jump shooter with above average defense. Looking back at AI, you could tell when things were turning as everything became about something else. Gave up a bunch of free throws (at home no less)? Must be the refs fault, no reason to suspect that a bunch of over the hill, unathletic guys just can't contain without fouling. Also, whenever he's asked about how well... poorly the C's play, he just chalks it up to, "We need more focus." Never can admit that the team just got beat or that the other team was better on any given night.

It's always sad when great players lose that step. We all remember who they were as superstars, and that can't just up and leave their heads as their body slows down. It just gets annoying really quick when everyone but the player realizes he's not the guy he thinks he is.

As much as I hate Manu, I really want to see how the waning years of Duncan play out. He was never a hot-head or full of himself like Garnett or AI. He always seemed to just show up and do his thing. Sure, he'd argue with refs (as any star player and leader should from time to time, to keep them thinking) a bit, but he was a class act 95% of the time. It will be interesting to see if he can, as so few ever have, respect what happens and simply be a quality starter/reserve without demanding to be the franchise until he eventually retires.

Yeah. Magic number reached against Houston, and down to one against Memphis. Thunder double their win total from last season with eight games still to play. KD has a monster outing, goes for his 66th 25-point game. Westbrook steps up again. Green has those two stake-in-the-heart threes. And everybody came to play.

AND we beat Boston on their home floor. I went to college in Boston for four years, and by the time I was done there, I'd had so much Yankee nastiness about sports that I was sick to death of all New England professional sports teams. I even hated the Revolution (MLS). So that just makes this win all the sweeter.

Is it my birthday? The calendar says it's not my birthday for another six months, but it feels like my birthday tonight. 8)
