No more messing around, this is getting real

by Royce Young on March 1, 2010 at 12:53 pm 44 Comments

I’ve long attempted to avoid much mention of any playoff talk, mainly because I don’t want to be Mr. Jinxy. But now at 35-23 and sitting firmly in sixth in the West, this is getting serious. Not just “Oh I hope we make the playoffs!” serious, but like, “Let’s get a good seed so we might be able to do some damage” serious.

Now I’m not getting ahead of myself. I still feel like a five-game losing streak could be lurking around every corner. Something that rhymes with schmimjury could happen at any time. The NBA season is a marathon and we’re just over 65 percent done. So don’t start booking hotels and plane tickets quite yet.

But looking at John Hollinger’s Playoff Odds today, Oklahoma City has a 97.2 percent chance of getting into the postseason. But that’s not the best part. As it stands today, the Thunder has a 10.2 percent chance of getting to the motherflipping NBA Finals. That’s a similar percentage to Denver, Phoenix, Miami, Atlanta and better than Boston, Dallas and San Antonio. I’ll pause for you to re-attach your jaw to your face.

Now of course these are just prognostications coming from a statistical formula, but the point remains: This is getting real. This isn’t just a fun run at the postseason where we laugh and dream of getting swept by the Lakers. This is turning into a season that you’re going to log into your memory and hold very close to your heart for a long time. I wrote about this once. Now I’m trying to drive it home with a railroad spike and sledgehammer. I’m not saying this team is actively going to compete for a championship (yet). I’m just saying that we’re moving from “Oh, we’re exceeding expectations!” into “Holy crap, we’re actually really good!” territory.

I had OKC winning 34 games before the season started. I’m wrong obviously about that. And I hope to be more and more and more wrong. J.G. covered all this in great detail last week as well. The team is blowing the doors off our expectations and making us redefine success. Nobody thought we’d be having not just playoff conversations, but playoff SEEDING conversations in March. Yet here we are.

I don’t know what it’s going to take to lock away a spot in the postseason. Something like 45 wins looks reasonable. And the Thunder would need to go just 10-14 to achieve that. But what would it take to get a GOOD seed? Whoever gets the two-seed in the West will probably win something like 55 games. OKC would need to go 20-4 the rest of the way to get there. I’m a shameless optimist, but I’m not that optimistic.

Now I know the Thunder’s hot and have won 11 of 13. They’ll cool again or run into a couple good teams on a back-to-back and lose a couple in a row. But I don’t think 50 wins is out of the question. The schedule is a bit backloaded with good Western Conference teams (18 of the last 24 are against the West), but half of the remaining games are at home. So that’s good news.

My point is, this is pretty darn terrific. I have no idea how the season will finish or where the Thunder will land or if they’ll actually land anywhere at all. But nobody thought we’d be having this conversation on March 1. Nobody thought we’d be talking playoffs, much less playoff SEEDING. Nobody thought Oklahoma City would have a serious MVP candidate. Nobody thought the NBA Finals would legitimately be in the conversation. But here we stand, 12 games over, sixth in the West and trending upwards.

I think I could get used to this.

@Heysloth

Don't look now, but we're 6 games up on Houston (current 9th seed) in the loss column (seven ahead of Memphis and Nawlins).

@The DON

This is what I was getting at with my previous post. The last 14 games, starting with SA on the 22nd, is basically playoffs round zero. There are really only three games I'd comfortably call victories at this point during that stretch.

We've got three back-to-backs and two 3-game road trips, so we should be reasonably well-rested down the stretch. The scariest thing, though, is that all of these teams will (assumedly) still have a lot to play for. Not one of the 1-11 Western Conference teams will be settled down and coasting into the offseason. We're gonna be involved in meaningful battles every night. This is why it'd be nice if we had a few more Eastern Conference teams lined up down the stretch, loosen up the tension.

Until we get about 43 wins or get ahead of 9th by about 6 games I don't think I will be able to relax. I check the standings about 3 times a day thinking that maybe I missed something that will convince me that we are gonna make it.

The performance of this team causes me to reflect on George Karl's admonistions about this team last year.

He acknowledged the team's young talent, but cautioned that even talented young teams must figure out a way to win and the more that losing persists, the harder it is to overcome.

It is amazing to me how quickly this squad overcame that hurdle. For if Karl is right, and I think he is, learning to win before becoming saddled as a loser franchise was the biggest accomplishment of this team.

I think it's due to KD's drive, the maturation of Westbrook and the total defensive buy-in by these young players.

Karl was skeptical it could happen. That's what makes it so much fun.

yeah you are right, though i think even 43 wins makes the playoffs, and that means we go 8-16 the rest of the way. the last time this many western conference teams were close to making the playoffs 2003-2004 season, 43 wins was the 8th seed.

People are getting WAY too comfortable around here assuming a 48-49 win season is a lock

You guys need to check our schedule the rest of the way and see how tough things are about to get

Could we finish with 50 wins? definitely. But we could also have a lot more heartbreaking back-to-back losses all over the place like the suns/spurs ones to close out the season.

We are really gonna be tested down the stretch.

If we answer the challenge and finish with close to 50 wins then we will be that much more battle hardened and ready for the playoffs once they start.

I'm sure you could get a regular here to buy both tickets and you get one of them....it's a win win

I wish we could slow down the season some.... need more time to save for playoff tickets! Know way in hell I'm letting some jerk who never went to a game during the regular season get my seats!!!!

@Dan

we should beat sac twice, NJ, clippers, indiana, philly, GS, wolves(thats 8)

there are the probable wins, raptors, charlotte

the ones we are favored to win, new orleans, memphis.

So 12 games where we should have the upper hand.

There are 3 games that are 50/50 in my opinion, SA, houston (they have been on a huge slide and no landry helps us a lot)and the suns.

the 2 games against portland really depend on roy being healthy or not, if he is still out those could both be wins, but if he plays they both could be losses.

utah we have 2 wins against them already, but they are hot now, but 1 win is all we need for the tiebreaker for seeding.

2 against denver, la, dallas, boston are probably losses.

So I think 5-10 losses the rest of the way is realistic. Which is anywhere from 49-54 wins.

I think the fact that there are 11 teams competing for playoff spots will lower the number of wins for the 8th seed, id say 43 wins gets in.

I like how the last ten games of the season brings 6 playoff teams. Trial run!

Dare I say, bring on Utah. That's my best case scenario.

If only we were playing more Eastern Conference teams throughout these remaining games. We just have to take advantage of the few games against Eastern teams we have left (I believe we have 7 very winnable games).

That being said, March 22nd begins crunch time for our Thunder. Aside from a game or two here, we're gonna face playoff team after playoff team. We're gonna be tested night in and night out, and it's going to be really interesting to see how we fare down the stretch. I think we'll be able to really get a good idea of how we'll perform in the post-season after the last few regular season weeks.

We've played 58 out of 82, so actually we're about 71% done.

I prefer the Spurs for a first round series.

They are old and creaky and just not having their best season. Our young, athletic guys have been giving them fits for the past two years.

True, they have some wily vets and Pop is a genius. But it's not enough to cover over the creakiness, imo.

The thunder need to get at least the 5th seed if they want to advance. They need to get out of the 6th seed so that they don't have to play a division winner (probably either Dallas or Denver)

Hey Royce are we going to get any new DT T-Shirt when we make it to the playoffs?

I think we'll have the best shot a the Jazz. The Jazz have been pretty inconsistent as of late. I see us beating them in the 6th game.

I think we'll end with 50 or 51 wins. 48 at the worst.

Our team is still improving. We're not regressing or even moving sideways -- the movement is still upwards.

I think March and April will be the best basketball this team has played all year.

crick
crick 5pts

I think we'll be at #5 in the WC at season end. #4 is a possibility.

#7 is the worst we'll do, imo.

It's simple for us - we thump the mediocre teams and we get exposed by the playoff teams . . .

we have many strengths, but our point guard defense - marginal interior defense (w Krstic) and our lack of inside scorer will be glaring deficiencies against the better teams . . .

justin
justin 5pts

A lot will depend on how we defend our home court against play off teams, something we haven't been great at. That Phoenix loss, and to a lesser extent the Spurs loss, really typify the kind of team this is now. Some will blame those losses on youth and inexperience, but it might point to a larger issue: we lack the fundamental parts to score / defend consistently in crunch time against the better teams.

justin 5pts

Uh oh, 10 game losing streak here we come..
