Oklahoma City shoots lights out, beats Utah 119-111

BOX SCORE

Oklahoma City has kind of gotten a reputation for being a good third quarter team this year. But coming out of the locker room 12-12 from the floor and shooting 88 percent for the quarter? That’s kind of sort of ridiculous.

Good thing too, because the Thunder didn’t bring their signature defense tonight, as the Jazz scored 111 points on 51 percent shooting, but OKC had the offense firing (60 percent from the floor) as Kevin Durant dropped 35 and Russell Westbrook had 30 points and 11 assists, leading the Thunder to their fifth straight win, 119-111 over Utah.

The last time the young Thunder came into a buzzworthy game where there was a real importance to it, they didn’t show up. They were blasted by the Nuggets and had a look to them that didn’t feel great. Overwhelmed, anxious, nervous – you pick the word. Tonight was the exact opposite. This team was focused. They were hungry. They were locked in and on a mission. If you’re not a believer yet, it’s time to start. This Thunder team is going places. Where exactly that is, I have no clue. But I put a ceiling on them before the season and the roof was blown completely off. I’m not making the same mistake again.

The best part too, was that the Thunder’s two young stars carried the load. Kevin Durant started the game 0-3 and didn’t look like he has his feathery jumper in his pocket. But then he hit his next three shots and throughout the course of the game, mutated into Durantula, the superhuman being that devours defenders in every way possible – inside, outside, off the dribble, midrange, at the free throw line – it didn’t matter how you tried to defend him, it wasn’t going to work. Durant finished with 35 on 10-17 shooting and went 13-13 from the line. My favorite bucket of the night was the 3 he hit late in the shot clock in the fourth, which immediately after he ripped the cords, he turned around and slapped hands with his brother who was sitting right behind where KD hit the shot. That was cool.

Now, Russell Westbrook. I don’t know where you feel like ranking him in the arbitrary lists of best point guards in the league, but if it’s not sniffing the top five, you’re crazy. Deron Williams was great tonight (27 points, 14 assists). But Westbrook was better. He owned this game. Scoring 30 points on 12-16 shooting was great. The 11 assists were wonderful. But Westbrook was a bulldog. Westbrook is one of the most physical point guards in the league. When you go against him, it’ll like getting in a bar fight. He will beat you up and by the time of the final horn, you’ll likely have a few bruises, a busted lip or all of the above. Some might say that Williams abused Westbrook and in some ways, yes. Russ had a lot of problems guarding Williams. But at the same time, Westbrook completely abused Williams as well. He beat him up, torched him time and again and because he was the better point man tonight, his team won. If you’re not excited about this head-to-head matchup in the Northwest Division for the next 10 years, you must hate America.

Notes:

  • The Jazz gave away a bunch of points at the stripe tonight (22-34). Had they hit free throws, this thing might have been tight.
  • Let me get the obligatory mention of how the Jazz didn’t have three players tonight (Kirilenko, Price and Okur). Yes, they would have made a difference. But would it have changed the outcome? I guess we’ll have to wait until next time to find out.
  • Bridging over from the second quarter into the third, OKC hit 14 consecutive shots at one point.
  • Kyrylo Fesenko had to be a little frustrated tonight. He went 1-4 on dunks and was blocked on three attempts. Serge Ibaka got two of them.
  • Speaking of, the Thunder bench was huge. Only 14 points came from the bench, but Ibaka had six boards and played great interior defense. Nick Collison was his usual excellent self. And Eric Maynor had six points, two assists and five rebounds. Overall, the bench made a huge difference.
  • Only Kevin Durant can step to the line as 18,000+ people chant M-V-P at the top of their lungs and knock down two clutch free throws with a huge grin across his face. That was one of the special moments from this season that I’m going to put in the memory banks.
  • Nenad Krstic with 13 points on 5-8 shooting. OKC is now 23-3 when he scores 10+.
  • Two extra things about Westbrook: 1) It’s amazing how many people still think Russell Westbrook can’t shoot. He is a really good midrange shooter now. If you leave him open from 14 feet and in, he’ll make it with consistency. He’s in love with his PUJIT (Pull Up Jumper In Transition) and he makes them at a good clip. 2) A large reason for Westbrook’s big leap in his percentage at the rim is because his left hand has come a long, long way. Last season, he was a one-handed finisher. This year, he can go at the tin with both. That is a big reason for his improvement around the iron.
  • OKC’s offensive efficiency was a ridiculous 129.3 tonight. That’s pretty insane.
  • One awesome KD play from tonight: Right before the half, Durant had the ball at the top of the key and pulled out an MJ-against-Bird-esque between-the-legs multiple times before knocking down a beautiful 20-foot jumper. It was gorgeous.
  • The underrated player of the night award goes to Thabo. He had 13 points and six rebounds, hit a monster 3 and was just everywhere on the floor. His bounce pass on the break to Westbrook in the first half was excellent.
  • Kyle Weaver made a very Kyle Weaver play in the first quarter with a block on Korver. He really is an excellent defender. Much like Thabo, he uses his length extremely well to make his opponent think he can’t get off his shot. He’s not comfortable or confident as an offensive player, but he’s got a future. He’s just a heady player.
  • Deron Williams hair. I feel like there needs to be more discussion about this.
  • Durant busted out the rip move twice tonight and Jerry Sloan nearly lost his stuff after the second one.
  • Players knew the importance of this one. It was physical, players griped at officials more than usual and there was a real intensity to it.

I’ve said all along the Thunder just match up well with Utah. The Jazz have problems matching OKC’s speed, athleticism and length. Not taking away from the Jazz, but they stayed as close as they did because they were lights out from 3 (11-19). The Thunder held a 6-12 point lead for the majority of the game and honestly, at times it didn’t feel that close. OKC was just focused and ready. This game really illustrates how important it would be for the Thunder to get home court advantage in the first round. The difference in their confidence and attitude at home tonight against the Jazz compared to a hostile road environment against the Nuggets was night and day. And tonight’s win will go a long way in getting the Thunder to that spot. Now just a half game back of the Jazz with the tiebreaker in hand. Life is good.

Ok, this might have been said but it deserves a second.

ROYCE, that description of Durantula will become the essence and the epitome of the nickname. Well done.

As for Russ, become aware people, we have the next great TWO, of course Durant, but also Russ. He just went blow for blow with one of the best up and coming PG's in the game, IT'S HIS SECOND FREAKIN YEAR... enough said.

Not taking anything from Dwil but dang, this dude has game. League take notice.

Sorry for the repeats. The posts were hanging and I wasn't sure what or if it went thru.

If Russ can hit the 16=23 footer, that is promising.

But I think you actually need more touch / talent to hit the 12 footer and the 8 footer.

And you still usually should be trying for any other kind of shot by anyone else over choosing to take the mid-range.

... and how much they are willing to play Williams after he hits his late 20s.

I don't know how it will play out but I'd guess there is a fair chance Deron Williams leaves Utah in some fashion in the next few years. It will depend on who they add, if they keep winning, how long Sloan coaches, who the next guy is and if he is any good and how much they are willing to play Williams after he hits his late 20s.

The facts from this page and the team page.

Westbrook's jumper from within 10 feet is more than 5 %pts worse than league average for the season and has only been above average in November and was skidded and jerked down to 30% this month.

Close to the same story from 10-15 feet.

But from 16-23 feet... Westbrook has been on fire since January. For the season he is still below league average even from here but that could change if he stays "on" the next 4 weeks.

Where were you sitting, I thought the crowd was great. My section was crazy when it mattered.
Honestly though, you're going to get more involvement when the game is closer. We did stay 3+ possessions ahead for a majority of the game.

Defensive Breakdown

I wasn’t happy with the defense at all. The score came up -3, which is VERY low. The only player that had a good defensive game was Jeff Green. Jeff has a problem with post scoring fours, but was bailed out last night when Boozer effective played center due to the absence of Mehmet Okur. But I digress. The Thunder defense was bailed out by the efficiency on the other side of the ball, and by the bad foul shooting of the Jazz (22-34, 65%).

Defensive MVP – Jeff Green (+10)

I love Green’s defensive game because he’s all over the place. He’s the best “contester” on the team – he’s great in transition defense, and he’s very good rotating and helping at the rim. Check out my notes on him:

1st Quarter

• Contest Paul Millsap (11:40)
• Steal (attempted pass from Williams to Boozer) and dunk (3:20)

2nd Quarter

• Contest C J Miles (10:00)
• Contest Paul Millsap (9:00)
• Steal from C J Miles (8:30)
• Steal in transition defense (8:25)*

4th Quarter

• Contest CJ Miles (7:10)
• Asleep in transition – Millsap scores (1:40)

Let’s breakdown the play with an asterisk. After a steal, Maynor has the ball in transition with Green (Miles) on his left. Eric Maynor tries an ill-advised pass to Green, and Miles is there to swipe it away. Reserve guard Sundiata Gaines scoops it up and heads back the other way. I was already saying, “Green is mad, he wants the ball back”. Green pursues the Jazz guard and catches up to him after a few seconds. Maynor (from the other side) forces Gaines to dribble behind his back. That Gives Jeff the opportunity to poke the ball away.
Kyle Weaver (+3)

Weaver had an okay game. I really wish that Brooks would’ve put him on Williams for a time, since our starting guards had no answer for the All-star point guard. Still, Weaver managed to get a steal, a block, a contest, and a deflection in fifteen minutes of court time.

Nick Collison (+2)

Serge Ibaka (zero)

Nenad Krstic (zero)

Eric Maynor (-2)

Kevin Durant (-2)

Durant had a quiet game on defense – due to matchups. To conserve energy on defense, Brooks usually puts him on the weakest offensive player (from the 2-3-4 positions). Durant was on the court for 41 minutes. Here are all of his notes:

• Contest Deron Williams (1st – 5:55)
• Late in contesting – Wesley Matthews for three (End of first Quarter)
• Steal from Kyle Korver (2nd – 6:20)
• Was slow in chasing Korver – Nick Collison covered for him – didn’t switch off to Millsap (3rd – 1:45)

Yep, that’s it. Compare that to Green’s notes above (and remembered that Green played six less minutes. Durant got off to a hot start on defense this year, but he’s only really had three excellent games since January 1st.

Thabo Sefolosha (-5)

After Williams had his way with Westbrook, Brooks put Sefolosha on Williams in the second half. Thabo did no better on him. I am going to breakdown a play in the fourth that shows you how Williams exploited his advantage. There’s 3:40 on the clock. Williams has beaten Thabo in the second half time after time, and he’s at it again. Paul Millsap (Green) is coming over to screen, but before that Williams takes a jab step toward Thabo. Thabo falls back a step or two; presumably to protect on the drive. Had there not been a pick coming, Williams would have probably taken the open three. But Millsap’s pick FORCES Thabo to switch onto him; there is no way he has time to come up and get around it. So now you have Green on Williams. Now you know that Williams is licking his chops. He dribbles through his legs a few times and gets to the lane with no difficulty; Green is retreating the whole time. Then Williams puts on a spin move to get free. Krstic has to help, so Williams kicks it to Boozer who is open momentarily. Durant rotates to help, so Boozer fakes the shot and passes it to C J Miles on the right wing. Westbrook rotates over to contest Miles, but Miles doesn’t even look to shot – he simply passes it to Matthews on the left wing. Thabo comes from deep in the lane to contest, but it’s too late. Matthews drains the three. This play shows that while the Thunder’s defensive rotation is excellent, it can only do so much.

Russell Westbrook (-9)

Overall Russell has improved some, but he still turns in a stinker from time to time. This is one of them. Actually, this is his fifteenth game with a score of -5 or worse. The rest of team has fifteen games COMBINED at -5 or lower. Westbrook started on Williams, but he had to switch onto Matthews after being ineffective on Deron. Let’s breakdown one of the plays that showed how the Jazz exploited this situation.

Early in the third, the Jazz sent Matthews to the post. Matthews is 6-5 and 220. That’s pretty big for a shooting guard. At 6-3 and 187 pounds (according to ESPN.com) Russell is at a disadvantage in the post. Williams has the ball on the right wing. Russell tires to come around and front Matthews. This only delays the inevitable. Williams moves the ball out top to Millsap. Millsap drives on Green and takes a contested layup. Meanwhile, Matthews has easily sealed off Westbrook. Matthews is the one with perfect rebounding position. Millsap misses, but Matthews gets the rebound and lays it in for two. This is the problem when you have our shooting guard checking the point guard of the other team – now our point guard has to guard their shooting guard, and you get mismatches like this.

Great Win, it bugs me that all the other teams keep winning as well and we don't really get any seperation to the 6-8 seed teams.

I mean, here's is the bottom 4 in the west in the last 10 games:

7-3
8-2

I wouldn't mind a second round series against the Lakers. That will show the team what they need to do between now and next year to be a legit conference finals team with a chance to go to finals.

IMO beating Utah and going heads up against a Lakers team they gave fits too in 2 out of 3, would be ideal.

IMO I think Ibaka can be a hard nosed Defender Double Double machine. Though I see him more as a true 4 than a 5. Though this may be the year following next. That still leaves the need of a hard nosed interior defender that rebounds and puts a few shots back in at the 5.

Sas

@DurantDurant
That's true. Giving Russ a down low option would open up a lot of avenues for the offense, for sure.

Thiiiiiink it's the "quick=shot-through-the-handcheck-to-draw-the-shooting-foul" move, but I could be wrong. Can't think of why It'd be called the rip move? Rip Hamilton doesn't do it much, Reggie Miller did all the time.

Also, Deron Williams hair. His bangs are running away from his forehead. Not on a Kristic level yet, but dude needs to figure out something soon. Bosley? Boozer-mashed-potato-chrome-dome? Tupee? Something.

@Tim B
I'm not sure. I definitely agree an extra 3 point shooter would help, especially given how our offense functions this year, but it depends on how Brooks wants the team to play into the future. I think it's unanimously agreed he wants an inside presence, but will that inside presence be a factor in running the offense or will it be more of "get the ball to KD and let our inside guy get rebound points"? As I said, I'm not sure.

I do agree that mid-level acquisitions are where we're likely to splash our cash over the summer if we go free agent shopping.

Weird night - best offensive game I've ever seen at the Ford Center coupled with the worst crowd. It was dead almost the whole game - except for the totally awesome Jeff Green "and 1" dunk.

But it was all worth it because Harden was sporting the Dr. Evil suit.

If Russell Westbrook hit his jumper like this every night, we could go to the Finals.

Tim B

What I really want to talk about is the free agent class as it relates to the Thunder. Assuming Kyle Weaver doesn't make us forget about Harden, having another able, 3point shooting reserve swingman that fits the system couldn't hurt. Also, at the price range the conservative Thunder will be willing to spend some deals could be had. Listed is some free agents that teams can probably sign for a MLE or less.

Kyle Korver
Raja Bell
Mike Miller
Kelenna Azubuike
Devin Brown
Roger Mason

There were a few others but these players are all veterans with playoff experience. I like Korver the least on this list because of his one dimensional game and Raja the best. Raja has a reputation for defense and toughness (Kobe clothesline), he's money behind the arc, has played in a lot of playoff games, and would probably accept a lesser role/contract because of his age. Now would he want to come here? What do y'all think?

Tim B
Tim B 5pts

I think the Thunder can win a series against Utah, Portland, Phoenix, and San Antonio. Utah is probably the most likely first round match-up of those with the others needing to play their way into the 5th seed with the Thunder getting the 4th. The Thunder have been consistent, healthy(for the most part), deep(enough), and would have the best player on the court for those match-ups.

Sas
Sas 5pts

@crick
It just gives us a starting point for next year. We warmed into our current condition this year, imagine if we start out that hot next year. We should start splitting series at least against the top teams. Of course it all depends on (Insert discussion of off-season acquisitions and training camps) over the summer, but we'll get there. I think how we play in the remaining games against the Lakers and Houston will be a good metric for how we're progressing. I think we have one last home game against the Lakers, so that should be a key win if we can pick it up.

dream catcher
dream catcher 5pts

so 2nd seed, 3rd seed, 6th seed, or 7th seed are what we should hope for to best maximize our chance of winning.

Unless you want to face the Lakers then any seed would be fine. But I doubt we make it past round 1.

The Don :
The way I see it, this is where we stand the rest of this glorious season:
If (more like when) we go to the playoffs, and we put up a great fight but still lose in the 1st round, we can still write this season off as a great success
However, we have a legitimate chance to actually win a series depending on us getting lucky with the right matchup (meaning we get utah and not denver)
Then there’s this remote possibility that somehow when the playoffs start, by god’s graces we get a few lucky breaks go our way like the right matchups and our players just really getting into a groove at the right time and us hitting on all cylinders, and we could very well win 2 rounds and go to the conference finals. That would be our ceiling this season.
I am just dying to find out which of these scenarios ends up playing out for us. Unfortunately there’s also that chance that we lay an egg in the 1st round and get bounced but I think we have too much fight in us to not at the very least put up a huge fight.

Our best scenario IMO would be to get the 3rd or 6th seed, and face Utah. If we ended up with the 4th, or 5th we face the Lakers in round 2.

I give us a 90% chance of making the playoffs, 45% chance of winning a series, and 15% chance of winning 2 series. This is just off the top of my head.

Granted, most of those series sweeps are against eastern conference teams, but even going 3-0 so far against utah is nice. I think Golden State is another 3-0 team, with one to play (maybe). It’s still nice to be in a position where we can talk about winning season series. There’s still a chance to tie some of the series up too in a number of them (Boston and San Antonio come to mind), and the number of lost series is only 3: Cleveland, Houston, Lakers. Granted, there’s a bunch of Western conference teams we’re 1-2 against, but those are yet to be decided.

ugh... the series losses to Houston and the Lakers really annoyed me.

The Houston losses were particularly annoying because I never felt that the Rockets were much better than us (if at all). But they were playing better ball earlier in the season and we were still getting our mojo going. And the matchups just gave us fits. Somehow, Houston just had our number.

But the Lakers series... agony. The first game against them was almost a wondrous miracle. Had KD made that final shot. Man oh man oh man did we come close to winning that one. Sigh. Ok, they kicked our butts royally in the second meeting and made us look foolish. But in the third meeting, we nearly did it again. So very, very close to taking the win.

So we end up 0-3 against the Lakers. But we were this close (holding thumb and forefinger so close together that they almost touch) to winning that series 2-1. How glorious that would have been! Ah well... close doesn't count.

"This Thunder team is going places. Where exactly that is, I have no clue. But I put a ceiling on them before the season and the roof was blown completely off. I’m not making the same mistake again."

100% buddy. I've been throught that too. I'm sure we've all had to re-adjust our feeling/expectations several times during the season.

For me, the really big adjustment came after the second win against the Hawks. The first win against Atlanta nearly did it, and then when we won against them again -- convincingly -- about a week later... that tipped me over.

That's when I decided this team was good -- really good. And that I didn't know what their ceiling was. And I've gotten into arguments since then with some who, after some disappointing game, say "well, see... the team isn't really there yet". And I argue the other side and get accused of being a pathetic homer.

But the team looks "there" enough to me. I mean, sure, I suppose it could all come tumbling down in the final stretch and the team suddenly gets nervous and forgets how to play good basketball. But I just don't see that happening.

They've learned how to win pretty. They've learned how to win ugly. They've learned how to win in close games. And how to handle blowouts. They keep coming up with different ways to pull out the 'W' against different kinds of teams.

Somehow or another, on most game nights any more, they manage to find a way to win. That's the definition of a winner. This team is a winner.

I totally agree, but I would still put Kidd ahead of Russ only because he's got such a great feel for the game, he never really plays bad. Kidd's stats seem to be only a reflection of whether he needed to step up on offense or someone was rolling and he kept feeding that guy. Westbrook still has some turnover issues and some off-nights.

But Russ definitely has top 5 potential, specially as Nash and Billups get older (and I'm not totally sold on Rondo, by now he should be showing some progress shooting the ball and Tyreke isn't exactly a prototypical PG, he's more of a combo guard right now).

I just want to take the time to give commenter Iblocka some major props for busting out his DT Harden shirt while sitting courtside on the Jazz's side at about midcourt.

Oh, and where in the world did you get those tickets?!

Russ is in the Derrick Rose / Tyreke Evans tier.. probably Top Ten PG now. I don't think you could make a case for Top Five. Paul, Nash, Williams, Rondo, and Billups are all better. Probably have to give Parker the benefit of the doubt for now over Rose / Westbrook types. Maybe Jason Kidd too? Probably not. So somewhere between 6-9 with Rose, Evans, and Kidd. Discerning all those guys from one another is really difficult as they all do different things well. Depends on what you want. This is a great era for point guards that's for sure.. and amazing that Russ can even be considered in that group. I remember thinking if Russ got his A:TO over 2:1 I'd consider it a step in the right direction, LOL.

That jumper is still way inconsistent and not as reliable as Derrick Rose's for example but man oh man when he gets respect from defenders and hits that shot he's basically a more physical Derrick Rose on offense..

were it not for Utah draining treys, this would have been a 20+ point blowout

every time they hit another one, I'd tilt my head and shout "wtf, another one?"

needless to say, my neck is sore!

Impressive the number of streaks we extended tonight: Wins when shooting >50%, wins when scoring >100 points, wins when Krstic scores in double figures.

And KD was just clutch down the stretch. Kind of quiet during the start of the second half, but when push came to shove, put his stamp on the game just as much as Russ did.

Nice to see all 5 starters hit double digit points, too.

The best past of Fesennko/Collison was Collison didn't even flinch, he just patted him on the back.
