That’s more like it: OKC dominates Houston 122-104

by Royce Young on March 24, 2010 at 9:25 pm 53 Comments

BOX SCORE

All together now: Deep breath in, deep breath out.

Remind me again what we were all worried about? In maybe the most important game (to date), Oklahoma City never trailed, plowing over the Houston Rockets 122-104 and it really wasn’t that close. That ends a 13-game losing streak to the Rockets, puts the Thunder’s Magic Number over Houston to six and best of all, restores a bundle of confidence and builds momentum. Phew. Phew, phew, phew.

Oh, and did anyone miss James Harden? Let me put it this way: Kyle Weaver in five games of replacing Harden: 16 total points. Harden tonight: 23 points on 6-10 shooting including 3-4 from deep. He walked on the floor, the Ford Center exploded and immediately injected life into the Thunder offensively. He drilled his first three 3-pointers, attacked the basket and gave OKC everything it missed in his brief absence. How important is he? Pretty darn important. Plus, I thought his beard was looking especially fantastic as well this evening. I missed that plush ball of face fur mess more than I knew.

Any time there is a blowout, I think it’s required to run down the outrageous statistics that accounted for it. So here we go. OKC shot 59 percent from the floor, hit 8-16 from 3, had 30 assists (!), had 12 blocks, every single player was a plus and at halftime, had 74 points. The Thunder missed only four shots in the first quarter en route to 39 points. It was exactly what you’d want in an important game. There was a complete focus from the tip and the team really looked to be on a mission. The ball moved exceptionally well, players hit shots and the Thunder took care of business. Order restored.

Notes:

  • Key moment: OKC was up 20 with about two minutes left until halftime. The Rockets hit a few shots and went on a 7-0 run to cut it to 13. Scott Brooks took a great timeout, quelled the Houston momentum and OKC scored the final four points to end the half. Instead of Houston taking an edge into the locker room, the Thunder now had it, plus a solid 17-point cushion.
  • Houston hung tight because it can hit the 3. In the first half, Kyle Lowry, Trevor Ariza and Aaron Brooks seemed to be on fire from deep. But that’s when the Rockets did most of their deep damage – the first half. Houston hit six of their nine treys in the first 24 minutes as OKC locked up on the perimeter in the second.
  • Thabo came back after the big miss and showed some nice offense tonight. He hit a corner 3, had a sweet dunk and hit a tough jumper with contact. He was 5-6 from the floor for 11 points.
  • No kidding, at halftime I watched Thabo stroke six or seven straight 3s from exactly where he missed last night. I believe I speak for everyone when I say, face palm.
  • Russell Westbrook didn’t have a great game by his standards, but he had eight dimes and five boards. Eric Maynor was excellent off the bench with nine assists and 10 points. As a tandem, they played extremely well.
  • KD with a tidy 25 points on 8-16. I might be wrong on this but it seems he’s shooting more and more 3-pointers without catching off a pass created by penetration. It seems like he’s taking more “by himself” if that makes sense. I don’t have the numbers on it, but it sure seems like he’s a much better catch-and-shoot outside shooter than off the dribble.
  • Jeff Green gets the underrated star of the night. He had 19 points on 8-11 shooting including 3-4 from 3, but he also played Luis Scola extremely well. Scola had 25, but it came on 11-25 shooting and Green did a great job playing Scola physical and forcing him out of his comfort zone.
  • Speaking of Scola, a solid tweet I received tonight: “Scola was pretty good in Forgetting Sarah Marshall I think.”
  • I think right now, there are two players on this team that if they were traded, the city would riot: Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka. Seriously. How stinking awesome is he? I love how EVERY shot he tries to swat. And he comes from out of nowhere to do it. You WILL NOT score on him at the rim without a challenge. He had four blocks and eight rebounds in 23 minutes. My man love for Serge is strong.
  • Also, consider me a fan of his new airplane move after dunks. I envision it picking up steam in the fanbase eventually to the point where everyone in the crowd does it after a big Ibaka dunk.
  • Nick Collison was quietly excellent tonight (six points, nine rebounds). But he made one great play that I just had to call “a Nick Collison play.” Russell Brand had position on him for an offensive rebound and was easily going to get it. Instead of jumping for it, Collison let him grab the board. As soon as the ball hit Scola’s hands, Collison swiped at it, knocking it out of his hands. Collison batted it again and it eventually wound up in the Thunder’s hands. Just a smart, Collison-type play.
  • For those at the game tonight, lame halftime show. It was just the Thunder Girls dressed up like Michael Jackson dancing to Michael Jackson songs. In other words, it’s late March and it’s getting tough to book new halftime acts. Just have Quick Change finish out the year. Or the guy that drummed on buckets. I don’t think anyone would complain.

I don’t think we could’ve asked for a better end result than what we got tonight. The team got over the mental hump against the Rockets in dominating fashion, restored some serious confidence, effectively sunk Houston from catching them for the eight spot and executed a tight gameplan. There’s truly nothing negative to mention. Maybe if you wanted to point out the perimeter defense in the first half, but in my mind that’s picking nits. OKC jumped out to a lead and never really threatened to lose it. There was the lapse before halftime but like I said, they responded immediately. It’s impressive when you can hold a 20-point lead for an entire half. I know I’m not the only one that’s a little relieved by this game. This team is good. What in the world was I ever worried about?

Now that Air Congo has service in OKC I'd say that Serge is the Dreamliner of the fleet!!

Vega :Just looked at BJ’s game logs in the D-League. Why is he taking so many shots?

He said in the preseason that he saw himself more in the mold of a long shooting forward like Dirk Nowitzki than a true center. Big goal. I put his ceiling at being a slightly younger and more athletic Krstic (with better hair and scarier eyebrows).

It's funny, because my buddy said the exact same thing. I guess everyone thinks that way.

While we're on celebrity look-alikes, I think Kevin Martin looks like Jay Sean.

oh, i forgot to mention one other thing: when Scola was taking a foul shot, i leaned over to my girlfriend and said, "You know the British rock band dude from Forgetting Sarah Marshall?" ha! so i cracked up when i saw the mention of that Tweet and Royce's referring to Scola as Russell Brand..

Was that Jax and the missus right behind the Thunder bench on SportsCenter?

Holy Crap! I wish I were able to record sportscenter. Things are way weird at my house right now or I would have.

I can spot us on the web recap of the Thunder game though, so that's good enough.

Cool!

YES...We need to start the campain...The Smoke Monster is an awesome nickname for Serge. I like Air Congo, but Smoke Monster is freakin' cool. Everyone get behind it.

with all the losses to teams behind us our playoff odds are really high, we even have a 24% chance of making it even if we go 0-12. 1-11 is a 58.5% chance, 2-10 85% and 3-9 97%.

Durant has a good chance of being in the top 10 for free throws made in a season during the shot clock era and 3rd best in the 3pt era

Jeff Green does that too, he'll slam it on the court before handing it back. Green also likes to 'Garnett' opponents' shots after the ball is dead.

My favorite thing about Ibaka is how he always asks the ref to see the ball after an opponent makes a free throw. Its like he is trying to curse the thing

Working on offense makes being in the D-league go down a little better. Mullens defense and rebounding will be more important for getting on the NBA court though.

7-14 from 3 pt range. I hadn't noticed that before.

Five games isn't much; still, the Thunder were 10th on offensive efficiency over that stretch but slipped to 14th on defensive efficiency. It is not an isolated event though- the west as a whole during this stretch is playing even more efficient on offense than before and than the east and even faster too.

Any idea what has been going on with Westbrook as of late? He has not been aggressive at all with his play over the last few games and did anybody notice how many times Brooks was able to poke the ball from what seemed to be a pretty lackluster Westbrook? In order for a strong, successful push and possible playoff run, Westbrook needs to get back into his aggressive, pushing form.

The biggest downside to Maynor is his scoring ability. But clearly, after last night, you can see that he is a tremendous pass-first point guard that is growing into his role very nicely. He is able to help carry Westbrook through his slump but I Hope Russell can break out of it soon.

Daniel
Daniel 5pts

Eric Maynor is playing tremendous basketball. I'm so happy that he's been picking up the point guard play while Russell goes through this slump.

Maynor is not only finally hitting his floaters, he's also seeing the floor well and setting up his teammates beautifully. He had two gorgeous alley oop lobs ... one to KD and the other to Serge on the break. I don't think Russ would've made those plays. He probably would've forced up a bad shot and got rejected.

Kudos to E-Maynor!

a few things:

1. I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan, so while I agree that using the Thunder Girls and Rumble for the halftime show is pretty lame, I was completely pumped about the MJ tribute. It could've been Royce out there dancing in Thunder Girl attire, but if he was doing it to "Billie Jean", I'd be totally into it.

2. I just read on the ESPN recap that Russell Westbrook is planning a celebrity bowling tournament in OKC featuring Thunder players and Reggie Wayne. Anybody know about this? Is it open to the public? How much it costs, etc?

3. Loved, loved this game. My only gripe is that we were up by so much, KD didn't play the 4th and it cost him some points in his scoring title march. :)

4. To Lindsey: I'm a huge Lost fan- love the Smoke Monster/Ibaka thing! Ha!

Vega

justin
justin 5pts

I can't get over how good Durant's been from the line. He's now shooting .894 from the line after tonight's game, and is one pace for 820 free throw attempts. If Kevin Durant manages to shoot 93.3% the rest of the way, assuming his FTA stay the same (possible, he's shooting almost 95% in march) he'll be at exactly 90% for the year. Reggie Miller shot 91.8% on 600 attempts in 1991 for the modern (post 1960) record for attempts while making 90%+. Durant will blow that out of the water if he keeps this up.

Barring a collapse at the line, I think it's likely we're witnessing arguably the best season ever from the foul line, certainly the best in the last 20 years.

It may not be an exciting thing to keep track of, but it's pretty amazing.

Not just you Lindsey. Serge is the "Black Smoke", great idea on the PA too.

I think I might have to buy a Serge Ibaka jersey. Man he's really picking the pace up lately! Durant falls a little behind James by not playing in the 4th, but yeah like SportCenters highlight shows, the Thunder have more meaningful games left than the Cavs. Durant takes the scoring title!

I don't think Presti is the sort of guy who will let potentially valuable trade chips rot on the bench and in Tulsa until they're contracts expire. Weaver is gone next season, perhaps with DJ and our picks in a trade up in the draft. They've both got potential, but neither will get many minutes here.

I do have to say I feel bad for kyle weaver in this, eventhough Im completely stoked for Harden to come back no question on that part. But Kyle is a good player but he just doesnt fit the role that Harden has. If thabo was injured kyle would make a great replacement for him, because thats the role he can play. I also really dont know why I feel compelled to write this other than hoping people dont pile on Kyle when he comes in.

For any of you "Lost" fans, Tonight I was inspired by Ibaka to give him a new nickname -- Smoke Monster! He comes swooping in outta nowhere and DESTROYS YOU. They should totally play the creepy ticking/buzzing noise over the PA after he makes a monster play.

yeah our defense has been porous, though they did only shot 41%

looks like memphis is going to lose also, denver lost, so utah is now tied with them

49 wins clinches playoffs for us now even if houston and memphis go perfect, provided memphis loses tonight

I missed this one but I was glad when I got in the car, turned on sports radio, and heard the final score. Hopefully LA picks up the win in San Antonio tonight. I also think the two Portland games (this weekend and the last game of the season) will be crucial for us.

I am really looking forward to next fall - the Thunder are coming to Kansas City (where I live) to play a preseason game in the Sprint Center.

Agreed about the ‘effort’ defensively.. it’s taken a noticable hit.

Green is really the only starter playing oonsistently well, and when he goes up against a scoring post player (Randolph, West, Gasol, etc), his numbers also take a hit . . .

Only bad thing about the game was Russell looking lax once again and almost giving it away toward the end of the half. Maynor came in and everyone settled down.

Ibaka does go after every shot. I hope he eventually learns to pick his battles better, though, or he won't stay on the court long enough to be a legit starter. Ibaka has the tools to be a starter in the NBA but he won't if he's fouling 5+ PER/36. I'm really eager to see how Serge and James Harden develop in the offseason and what they can bring to the table next year..

Defensive Breakdown

The team rated as about average (+27), but the starters turned in a lackluster performance. The bench did a bit better in the later stages of the game. Despite the blowout, the defense still hasn’t reverted back to the stellar effort we saw earlier in the year.

Nick Collison (+9)

My second favorite play occurred early in the fourth quarter. Rookie Jermaine Taylor had just entered the game for Houston. He had the ball on the baseline. Nick Collison was in proper defensive position. Taylor had room to hit the seventeen footer, but he had just thrown up a brick and was hesitant to throw up another one. So Taylor tried to dribble baseline past Nick. Collison simply slid over to cut off Taylor’s path. Taylor then pivoted and tried to dribble the other way. Nick then reached out and poked the ball away. Five seconds later, Ibaka dunked the ball home for the Thunder.

Nenad Krstic (+9)

Jeff Green (+5)

Out of rotation, Green is the best “contester” on the team. He’s even better than Thabo. Cue the video to six minutes left in the game. The Rockets throw the ball down to Jermaine Taylor, who is close to the baseline. The Thunder recovers and cuts off Taylor’s drive. He ships it crosscourt and out to Aaron Brooks, who is behind the arc. At the time the ball is released, Green is standing right next to the baseline. It’s about a thirty foot pass. Green SPRINTS to Aaron Brooks and gets there to make him think about it. He does this every game, but this was great for two reasons: one, Green sprinted across the court to get there, and two, he did this late in the game when the Thunder had a twenty-four point lead.

James Harden (+4)

Kevin Durant (+3)

Serge Ibaka (+3)

On paper (and in the highlights), it appeared that Serge had a great defensive day with four blocks. But mistakes in transition and in boxing out hampered his overall performance.

Kyle Weaver (+2)

Russell Westbrook (zero)

Eric Maynor (-1)

Etan Thomas (-2)

Thabo Sefolosha (-3)
