Chad Ford: OKC would take Daniel Orton if he were available

by Royce Young on April 6, 2010 at 2:38 pm 35 Comments

In his draft blog (Insider) and again today in his chat, ESPN draft insider Chad Ford said the Thunder is high on local product Daniel Orton and would take him if he was available when Oklahoma City picked.

I wrote today in the draft blog that the Thunder (who have 2 first round picks) are his floor. They’d take him with one of their picks. But they’re drafting in the early 20s. He could go a lot higher than that. Top 10 isn’t out of the question. Crazy for a guy who averaged 3 ppg. But you know how gaga NBA GMs get over size.

[...]

But as we first reported several weeks ago, Orton has caught the attention of a number of NBA GMs, the most prominent of which is the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Sam Presti. According to a source close to the process, the Thunder are sending signals that if Orton is in the draft, they’d take him with one of their two first-round picks. Currently that would put Orton in the early 20s. However, a few other GMs have told ESPN.com that they’d consider taking Orton even higher.

I don’t think anyone should take the Thunder too seriously about “sending signals”. Presti is a master of draft deception (Spanish Law Firm anyone?) But despite looking incredibly similar to Russell Westbrook (as pointed out by one astute reader), Orton would be a nice fit. Especially when you consider that Oklahoma City has moved itself out of the lottery and will be picking in the 20s now. That’s kind of hard to wrap my mind around, but it’s truth.

Unless Presti can leverage his wealth of picks and assets into moving into the lottery, Orton would be a decent option. He’s big (6’9″ 260), has solid touch and is gifted athletically for his size. He’s raw with his footwork and was inconsistent in stretches at UK and would serve himself a lot better to come back for another year of college.

But if he wants to come out, OKC would be a nice fit for him. I don’t know if he’s The Big Man the Thunder are after, but much like Byron Mullens, it would be a worthy flyer to take a shot at to develop. Nick Collison and Nenad Krstic might not be around forever, so re-stocking the front line is a pretty high priority.

But who’s thinking about the draft right now? We’re one of the cool kids now that can blow off the lottery and forget about draft night. We’re in the playoffs now babeee.

Am I the only one that thinks Westbrook looks like Bodie from The Wire?

i haven’t thought that before but i can definitely see it now. bodie was the man by the way

not as much as Shaun Livingston reminded me of Wallace from the wire.

I would love to be able to pick up DO. He's a great, intelligent kid. I think he'd fit right in here.

Orton seems like a Presti pick: a guy with all the physical and athletic qualities but also well-spoken and intelligent. Check out this interview of Orton (and Xavier Henry) about places he likes in OKC:

A funny guy, he likes Walmart and bowling, he’ll fit right into the culture of the Thunder.
The other big I like in the draft is Frenchman Kevin Seraphin:

After watching that video, he reminds me of Orlando Allen who played center for OU. http://goo.gl/4mwe

They seem to have a similar personality, and something about their manner of speech seems similar to me also.

No, I'm just a bigger fan of drafting production over tools. If Orton was putting up really nice per minute rebounding numbers, or had an amazing block percentage, or if his defense scouted as elite, I'd be a lot more excited.

The only thing that makes me hesitant about signing a local guy is the fan perception problem. IF we draft Daniel, and he can't make the rotation in his first year, hundreds of upset fans will be all over the coach for not playing him, not giving the guy a chance, yadda yadda yadda. Local products tend to be over-hyped, and local fans will always think he's better than he is. I can't listen to the post game radio anymore because every second fan wants to ask why Etan Thomas isn't playing.

Okay. Rant over.

The only thing about Daniel that causes me hindrance, is that I like my centers closer to 7' than 6'9. But you know, height isn't everything.

No, you're not. I've always thought that.

Can you name one good big man that averaged 3 ppg for his most recent team before joining the NBA? (the tone of that sentence should be taken as truly inquisitive and not smartassedness). My point is that Orton wasn't good enough to start for his college team, so what makes GMs think that Calipari didn't know what he was doing? It's a bad spot for GMs because the stable was really full at UK with Cousins and Patterson, but you really don't know what you are getting with him.

It just appears at this point that Presti is going to have to throw a lot of s--- on the wall over the next year or two and see what sticks when it comes to the "missing center" piece of this wonderful puzzle we call the Thunder. I've already written Mullens off - prove me wrong Byron Don't Call Me BJ.

He is not 6'9 either. They have Cousins at 6'11 and Daniel is taller than him. He might be 6'9 without shoes but at McGuinness he was listed at 6'10 and that seems to be more accurate.

So, you read all the negative stuff without reading any of the positives? As late as we'll be picking in the draft, a guy like Orton is a good selection if he's still around. He's by no means the best player in the draft, but we don't have a lottery pick either. Someone like this, you take and in a few years see what he has to offer you, when Collison and Krstic aren't around anymore.

@DSMok1
I don't get it. He sounds like an absolute mess offensively, an average rebounder, and an okay post-defender but with poor instincts and footwork. Low bball iq physical specimen with no real feel for any part of the game... don't get why we should be excited. He sounds like Ibaka before Ibaka developed.

Then we could get Greg Zoubeck as the arena announcer. I'd love to see what routine Rumble (or Jazzercise, for that matter) could come up with for "Comfortably Numb."

Another name to keep tabs on: Zoubek.

DSMok1 in Norman, OK:
Has Brian Zoubek developed in the last few months into a legitimately good NBA center prospect?

Jonathan Givony:

Absolutely.

Rebounding wins games. (or at least its one of the things that contributes)

Brian Zoubek is the best offensive rebounder in college basketball (and the second best in the last decade on a per-minute basis after DeJuan Blair)

Therefore, it might not be such a stretch to say that he could help an NBA team coming off the bench for 10-15 minutes per game?

I'm definitely on the bandwagon as you may have heard by now.

Zoubek can rebound!

wow, he totally looks like RW. When I pulled up the page, I thought it was him and thought it weird that his pic was on a draft-related post.
---
So, would we be looking at him for center? If so, why not just move Serge over to center? Serge is listed at 6'10" and this kid is 6'9". That doesn't make a lot of sense. I guess if we were going to let him develop in the d-league something, maybe...

Another quote from Ford's article:

"While Orton's numbers may not be impressive, a number of scouts feel that if he had a bigger role, he would've shined. They love his toughness, defense and long arms. One scout compared him to Kendrick Perkins."

On another note, if Orton were to join the team, both he and D.J. White would have mini-me's.

@Big Stew

Orton is definitely better than Mullens who thinks he's a small forward trapped in a 7'1" frame. If he'd focus on playing around the basket, he could be really good, but hovering around the perimeter with his middling jumper just makes him a roster hog.

Orton, at least, knows he's a big man and plays like a big man. I don't think he's a long term project, either. He isn't as good as DeMarcus Cousins (few are), and Patrick Patterson had seniority, so he fell in the depth chart at UK. Another year in college, and he could easily be a top-5 candidate. If he falls to OKC this season, we would be lucky. My only real concern with Orton would be durability since he missed a lot of time when he played for McGuinness.

@Big Stew
Exactly. When you're drafting in the late first, you're going to have a hard time finding immediate impact guys.

But that doesn't mean it's worth passing on extremely talented players.

Big Stew
Big Stew 5pts

Horrible idea IMO - granted sometimes all you get late in the first round are "project" guys but I hope that Presti can find a dimaond in the rough and get a big guy that can contribute by the middle of next season to push us into the top 3 or 4 in the Western Conference.

I just don't think Mullens or Orton are the big man answer for the Thunder.
