OKC finds a little destiny, beats the Lakers 101-96

BOX SCORE

I really don’t know where to start. I’m sitting here, staring at a blank screen trying to will some letters to come out of my fingers. But I don’t feel like I can accurately sum up what tonight’s game was like. I guess loud would at least be a start.

With thunderstorms rolling into Oklahoma City right around tip-off, I thought this might be the sign. It kind of felt like destiny. I think people in Dallas could feel the energy pulsating from the Ford Center, even 30 minutes before the game started. Fifteen minutes before tip, everyone in the place was on their feet. And they stayed there until the first bucket dropped.

But what was so wild is that everything went wrong. The Lakers scored on their first seven possessions, jumping out to a 10-0 lead. They led the entire first half and kept the Thunder an arm’s length away. Every time OKC tried to sneak in the game, Kobe would hit a 3, Pau Gasol would come up with a big rebound or Derek Fisher would drop a big shot. For the first 34 minutes, the Lakers had the Thunder right where they wanted them and for the most part, kept the lid on the Ford Center.

And then Russell Westbrook happened.

Holy dunk. It happened so fast that I don’t think the crowd really even knew what happened. He went to the rim in a flash and threw down the kind of dunk that you’ll see on NBA playoff promos for the next 10 years. It was massive. That lit a fire back under the Ford Center. Then James Harden nailed a 3. Down three. Then finally the Thunder got a stop and Kevin Durant, who was having a miserable shooting night, was with the ball in transition. You could see it coming the entire way. He stopped, pulled and dropped a trey. Tie game. Pandemonium. Bedlam. Instantly. Loud. Game on.

Somehow, someway, the Thunder was down by a point, 75-74, going into the fourth quarter. I still don’t know how. And with a Serge Ibaka bucket to start the fourth, OKC had its first lead of the game. Again, I don’t know how.

But still, a young Thunder squad against Kobe and the Lakers in a tight playoff game in the fourth quarter? Who really thought the Thunder was going to win? Even the 18,000 blue-clad maniacs in the Ford Center really didn’t believe it. But 13 guys did. And that’s all that mattered. If there was ever a game to say, “Yep, and THATS when Kevin Durant stepped into the pantheon,” this was it. Again, he was terrible offensively early. He was pressing. He wanted the ball to go in so badly. He started something like 0-8 from the floor and I honestly wondered if he’d ever score. He only had two points after one quarter and nine at halftime. That, like never happens.

But like the great ones do, like the guy on the opposite bench does so often, he stepped up in crunch time. The first thing he did was defend Kobe. He held Bryant to four points in the fourth quarter on 2-11 shooting. And KD maybe scored the play of his young career, and it ironically came on the defensive end. Kobe dribbled to the corner looking for his patented fadeaway baseline jay. Durant read him perfectly, rose up and blocked it. OKC got possession, scored on the other end and boom, at that point you knew something was happening.

But KD also did work on the offensive end. He scored 12 of his 29 in the fourth quarter on 4-6 shooting. He grabbed 19 rebounds. He hit four clutch free throws. He just took over. This was his game, his moment, his time. Despite going 8-24 from the floor, he simply willed his team to a win. He took his guys to a higher place. Maybe this was the start of a change in guard, maybe it was just KD growing up incredibly fast from Game 2. Whatever the case, he outplayed Kobe Bryant in the fourth quarter in the playoffs and led his team to a win. Read that sentence again.

But KD doesn’t even have this opportunity without his supporting cast. The team preaches together, and this was a night you saw them hang in there as one. James Harden, who as we all know hasn’t been very good thus far, scored 15 first half points and was the reason OKC was even close. Russell Westbrook finished with 27 points on 11-21 shooting and made big play after big play. Serge Ibaka played huge minutes, putting back two rebounds for dunks, grabbing six rebounds and blocked a Gasol shot, recovered it and outleted to KD for a fast break score. Nick Collison took like 16 charges again. All together, everyone had a hand in this.

And give a ton of credit to Scott Brooks. He made the tough choice to stick with Ibaka and Collison late, letting Durant defend Kobe. Green, one of the Thunder’s marquee players, sat the majority of the fourth. I’m sure it wasn’t an easy call, but it was the right one. The matchups weren’t there. Without that decision by Brooks, OKC probably doesn’t win this game. Jeff Green is a great player, but it’s not fair to him or his teammates to stuff him in a situation he can’t produce. Brooks didn’t pull the trigger on this in Game 2 and it hurt the Thunder. He did tonight and it really paid off.

Notes:

  • LA, 12 free throw attempts. OKC 34. Kobe Bryant didn’t attempt a single free throw. Um, yeah.
  • While that’s obviously something to point out, the reason the Lakers lost was because they settled for jumpers. They took 31 3-pointers! You have Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol inside, who dominate, yet Artest, Bryant and Fisher are jacking 3s. That’s where they lost this one.
  • Jeff Green played 28 minutes and didn’t play hardly any in the fourth, yet he was vital in the first half. He scored OKC’s first six points and honestly, without him there, the Thunder probably gets steamrolled. Someone had to settle the team down and Green stepped up.
  • I almost think the frenzy the crowd had going before the game put added pressure on the Thunder. They wanted to perform. And I think it fueled the Lakers a bit. You could see the satisfaction as they hit jumpers and shut us all up.
  • Kobe begged Thabo to take 3s tonight. And he obliged. Thabo clanked his first two badly, but hit his next two, which were HUGE. If OKC gets just a little from Thabo and the bench scoring from Harden, this could get real.
  • After Russ dunked on a fast break in the first half, he pulled out a raise the roof move. It was awesome.
  • When Harden knocked down his first 3, he let out a huge “FINALLY!” gesture. That 3 dropping was a big moment for him, and the Thunder.
  • OKC outrebounded LA 53-39. Wow. Eight turnovers for LA, nine for the Thunder. The Lakers shot 45 percent to OKC’s 41 percent. The Thunder won this thing on the glass.
  • There was a pre-game video they played about two minutes before they announced the starting lineups. It was incredible. I want it on DVD now. It showed OKC now, then started at the beginning showing the land run and the Dust Bowl. Then it had a clip of the bombing. Then it had OKC rebuilding. Then it had the Thunder. You can be assured it got a little dusty in my section tonight.
  • Mrs. DT wants me to mention the Thundergirls quickly. Not the best moment. They came out for a typical routine and they were doing their thing when “Baby Got Back” came on. They threw up their skirts over their butts and proceeded to shake them rather demonstratively. It was… something. I continue to find it odd for an organization to promote itself as so fan and family friendly as the Thunder does, to have that.
  • The crowd. I mean… whoa. I’ve been to a lot of sporting events and been a part of some amazing crowds. But this one tops it all. I’ve never, ever, ever heard anything that loud. The crowd stood the ENTIRE fourth quarter. Not just one section. Everybody. Even Clay Bennett and Aubrey McClendon. Even the suite holders. Even the rich folk sitting on the floor. Everyone was up. And we didn’t chant “dee-fense” one time. Nope. We went the college route and did the “MAKE LOUD NOISE WHILE THEY HAVE IT” routine. I don’t know if anything will ever top it.

What we have now, is a series. No more sweep talk, no more the Thunder can’t close talk. They got it done tonight. And most importantly, they grew up in a big time way. This was a huge moment for this franchise and not just for the players. Yes, Durant and Westbrook and Green and Harden had some big moments and some big plays. This game will hang with them and be a major stepping stone in the future. But this city and this fanbase really grew up tonight too.

You can’t tell me the Lakers didn’t feel our energy and our noise. We made a difference. When we were leaving the arena, there were people chanting “Beat LA!” blocks away from the Ford Center. Car horns were honking everywhere, even 30 minutes after the game ended. People were high-fiving strangers and cheering randomly. If you didn’t know better, you would’ve thought we were walking away with a trophy after the game. It was a moment. A moment I know I’ll never forget. And one I don’t think I will ever be able to accurately describe.

My husband and I have been a proud Season Ticket holder since our first season at the Ford Center, but we have never been as proud as we were Thursday night. The sea of Blue was a dream come true. We ALWAYS wear our Thunder Blue to every game, and we think it should look like that at every home game. The looks on the players faces, when they took the floor, is something I will never forget, it brought tears to my eyes. We are so proud of our team, and can't wait to show them again tonight how much we appreciate them. GO THUNDER, BEAT LA!!!!!

Who or what was the person or thing that was sitting at the end of the Lakers bench near the scorers table ? Leather boots, pants, shirt, jacket, and hat. Straw gray hair sticking out from all sides under the hat. It looked like the Wicked Witch of West. Anyone have any info about this person ?

What I love about OKC's crowd is that they're passionate and loud, but not classless like Salt Lake City's. They're positive fans, which is just great to see.

I was there and won't forget it. It is now tied with two others as my most fun sporting event moments. Its right there with the 2000 OU/Nebraska game in Norman and the 2000 OU/TX A&M game in College Station. Just awesome. I have OU season football tickets and missed the OU/Tech game in 2008 because my flight from LA didn't get back in time so my brother in law hijacked my ticket. I watched it on TV, but then had to hear about how awesome it was from my wife for the next 3-4 days. Sooooooooo glad I got to go last night. It was totally worth going over budget for. Can't be there on Saturday, but I hope that crowd can come within 3/4 of last nights intensity.

Before the game Phil said that he thought the crowd would be about the same as the last time they were in town. I haven't read any postgame quotes, but I wonder what he said ... if he was even able to hear the question.

That totally reminded me of a college football game atmosphere. THAT is what will set us apart from other NBA cities. I hope to God we never lose that.

I have to once again take this opportunity to command KD for what he did last night

Last night, he was the anti-Durant. His performance was the exact opposite of what he typically does and that was great to see. He got stronger and better as the game went on, when usually it's the other way around. Hopefully this is the beginning of him figuring out how to give his best in the most important time of the game.

Hopefully us putting up a good fight against LA, the rest of the country noticing what a great franchise this is, and what a great fan base it is to play for will all be enough to convince one of the key free agents this summer to say "hey, I want to be a part of that. I want to join this team that will give me a chance to compete for rings for the next decade".

Hopefully, that free agent is Chris Bosh (NOT DAVID LEE). Bosh is not a great #1 option who will carry a team, but paired with KD we could have something special in terms of an inside-out game. I am convinced that Bosh is like Gasol was when he was in memphis. He puts up good numbers but just isn't good enough to carry his team and therefore has developed a bad rep as being soft and a loser (that is exactly how Pau was regarded by everyone when he was in Memphis). But like Pau, if he gets an opportunity to play with another superstar and a strong supporting cast, he can really shine and be a great option #2 on a championship team.

COME TO OKC BOSH!!!!!

spike
spike 5pts

I was excited to see KD guarding Gasol in the first quarter, then he gets two of the tickiest tackiest fouls. And he looks at the official like "Do you not see Artest reaching over my back every time they throw the ball to me? And you're calling me for THAT?"

But yeah, Durant's length may bother Gasol more than Green would and we might see that more. But... man, Gasol is a good basketball player. I can't even hate him because he's that skilled, smart, effective. He still repulses me because he's one ugly mo-fo, but he's a damn good basketball player. He should be getting 20 shots and should have the highest usage of all the Lakers. 15 boards, 5 assists and 7 of 12 from the floor. What a beast.

That was one of the most amazing experiences in sport to date! The only thing I can compare the sheer force of sound to would be OU/Texas Tech in 2008. We didn't have the head coach questioning our level of committment here, but Russell Westbrook sure lit a fire under 18,000+ seats in the Ford Center with his second outside the paint dunk of the night! Saturday is going to be fun. No tickets, but from what it looked like outside the Ford Center last night, I may just go up and watch the game on the big screen outside.

Also - Kinda like the new nickname one of the TNT guys gave KD. "Sweet D"

Not sure how Collison was the top defender. He took some charges but he got dominated early. Couldn't get a rebound, make a shot or defend. He took some charges and played better later on but when Ibaka is out you can tell. The Lakers postmen eyes light up and they know they can score pretty much anytime they want.

KD and Ibaka were the defensive MVP's IMO and it wasn't even close. It may not even show in the numbers but Ibaka has the Lakers bigs attention. They play differently when he's in and he's the only one that can get high enough to get a rebound (and maybe Durant) when everyone is under the basket on a miss. There were 3 or 4 times when Collison had guys blocked out and they just reached up over him and grabbed a rebound.

Really not trying to rip on Collison, I absolutely love his hustle and his heart. He works as hard as anyone out there. I just find myself hoping we can get through Krstic and Collison so we've got someone in there that can defend and rebound with their bigs.

* 28 minutes for Jeff Green felt about right

* I would like to see more Westbrook/Harden/Durant/Ibaka/Collison

* Westbrook is MVP. He won this game by bringing the crowd back to life. We were down by 6 in the 3rd. Nick Collison gets called for an offensive foul off the ball followed by Ibaka giving LA two points on a blatant goaltend that had no chance of going in. You could see Russ get frustrated. Then he dunked it on LA's head. Crowd never looked back

I have worked @ the Ford Center since the 2nd season when the Hornets were here. I must give it to the fans....BEST! CROWD! EVER!!! I have never heard it that loud in that arena EVER!!! My ears are still ringing this morning.

The Thunder org must be commended for the shirts. It was a wonderful sight to come out to the arena before doors opened and just see a sea of blue. Even KD was impressed when he came out to start warming up @ 6:30.

And I was so proud of the fans being in (or should say "at") their seats 15 min before tip off...when the players finally took to the floor, you could see the looks of amazement on their faces...all of those fans in blue standing yelling like crazy for them...KD looked like a kid @ Christmas.

I am so glad I am able to say that I was there to witness history. We may not have all of the celebrities that LA has, but we showed the world last night that OKC has heart and soul. We have arrived!

I dished out like 150 high fives to people I didn't even know.

I was sitting behind the Thunder bench and in the first quarter Pau was late to help on defense and he and Artest talked and Pau made motions with his hands that he couldn't hear him communicate on defense because of the noise.

One more thing.... when James Harden checked into the game for the first time in the first quarter he was running up the floor and laid a pretty good shoulder into Farmar's chest, I think that was payback for Bynum doing the same to Green in game 1.

MartzMimic

The crowd was amazing. Everyone was talking about our promising young team and our young coach, but today they were playing the big boys on the block. Sure enough, they got punched in the mouth early, and it seemed like all the talk was just talk. But the team hung in and, somehow, we came back to take the lead and win. It was so loud, you couldn't hear yourself think, and I'm sure my eyes weren't the only ones watering, thinking about the team's turnaround as I looked across a sea of red on October 28, 2000, OU-Nebraska.

I don't mean to bring any college rivalries into this, but that's the only crowd I've ever seen that was anything like last night. I literally couldn't speak after the opening video. And to see the Thunder's reaction when they stepped onto the court - especially Russ - was something I'll never forget.

Defensive Breakdown

The total came up +29, which is above average, and is the median total for the series. (Game 1 was +15, Game 2 was +53). The Thunder was only +14 after three quarters, so the +15 in the final quarter helped decide the game. The obvious switch was KD guarding Kobe for most of the 4th – and I will go in to detail about that below. You didn’t see all the rejections that you did from game two (well, despite all the swarming it’s almost impossible to get 17 blocks every game), but you still saw the great rotations and the (usual) excellent closeouts. The Thunder also did a good job with the bigs. The Lakers went to the power game more in the first three quarters, but the Thunder wasn’t really punished as much as you would think. I only have the Thunder down for getting scored on (with a post move) three times in the game. I also saw that we didn’t give up any baskets from double teams on Gasol or Bynum, so that was also great. Bottom line is, when you get an above average score versus the world champs, you take it.

Nick Collison (+10)

He had two drawn charges (shocker), and seven contests. He also was a major factor in the play of the game.

There’s about seven minutes to go in the game. The Lakers are down two. Brooks has already switched KD onto Kobe. Kobe is on the right wing. Jordan Farmar (Westbrook) is in the right corner. On this trip, Bynum (Collison) is on the right block. Lamar Odom (Serge Ibaka) is on the weakside (left) along with Ron Artest (Harden). Kobe uses a fancy dribble to get by Durant. Collison comes off Bynum to grab Kobe, but Ibaka pinches Bynum from the other side to shut that option down. Westbrook also digs in to slow Kobe, leaving Farmar open in the corner. Kobe doesn’t even look that direction, so that option is lost. Kobe goes up against Collison, and Harden sinks in the lane. Collison doesn’t foul and extends to block (not the shot) but the path of Kobe’s shot (should he actually shoot it). He FORCES Kobe to pass the ball. Kobe ends up passing it to Harden. You can’t play any better defense in this situation without actually getting the block call. In fact, it was so great, I almost missed it. Initially, I was going to give Harden all the credit on this play with a steal, but it doesn’t happen without Collison. We go score with a dunk and push the lead to four.

James Harden (+8)

Take Harden off the milk cartons! His offense obviously kept him in the game, but his defense was good as well. He guarded Kobe for about four minutes in the first half, and for about three minutes in the second half. Kobe took him into the post (much like he did in game 1). Kobe shot twice in this situation – he scored once and missed once. When Kobe passed (due to double team help), the Lakers players usually missed their open jump shots.

Harden also picked up seven contests, two deflections, and a drawn charge. He also had two steals. The big thing was that when KD went to guard KB, Harden had to guard Ron Artest. Artest really only tried to post him once. I am assuming that Artest will be more aggressive against Harden in game 4 (assuming that KD gets more time on KB).

Kevin Durant (+5)

Alright, let’s get to it. The notes for KD versus KB in the 4th (about eight minutes of gametime):

• Contest KB from 16 ft.- stopped drive and forced a turnaround jumper (8:59)
• Contest KB from twenty feet (7:40)
• Contest KB from twenty three feet (5:55)
• GUP but recovered and got the BLOCK (5:30)
• Contest KB from twenty three (4:50)
• GUP; KB drives; defense rotates; DF open for three (3:30)
• GUP, KB drives, defense rotates, Ron Artest for a long two (1:20)
• Contest KB from twenty three feet (0:40).

Kobe was limited in the fourth quarter, but in reality the results were a mixed bag. If you throw in the Collison play (see above), Kobe got penetration on four of nine attempts. That’s not good. Also, I know from charting all season that KD’s lateral movement is not as good as Thabo’s, Harden’s, or even Jeff Green’s. Kobe will look at the tape and be more aggressive in game 4, especially if KD gets more time on him. I think that Kobe settled for the jumper too much. Still, let’s give KD some credit. He IS the longest perimeter defender in the NBA. Kobe is not used to getting that length in his face on his jump shots. And KD did just enough shadowing on KB’s jab steps to (initially) keep him form driving, so that’s saying something as well. I am just wary of KD guarding KB for max minutes in game four, but we will see what happens.

Serge Ibaka (+4)

Ibaka’s weaknesses all came together on one play late in the third quarter. He is guarding Lamar Odom in the post. His “happy feet” (dancing) gives Odom a chance to spin away from Ibaka in the lane. Nick Collison comes to help. Odom shoots over Collison. The ball is WELL on its way down – its about to TOUCH the rim, and Ibaka tries to swat it away! It was easily the dumbest play of the year.

Jeff Green (+3)

Russell Westbrook (+2)

Thabo Sefolosha (zero)

Three pedestrian games for our “supposed” defensive stopper. Anyone else think that he’s hurt??

Eric Maynor (-1)

Nenad Krstic (-2)

Bynum got two quick buckets on him in the first quarter.

First off, to everyone who was at the game last night, kudos to you. I wasn't able to make it, but I watched on the tube, and mercy sakes. Which reminds me, you all owe me a new set of TV speakers. You cracked mine.

If you went to the game, just know that the TNT crew gave you folks some major props. And of course, the team as well. Doug Collins had what I thought was the best line of the night. At one point in the second half, after the Lakers called timeout, Collins commented on how the Thunder simply refused to go away, and said L.A. must be looking over their shoulders and asking themselves, who are these guys?

Part of Berry Tramel's take in today's paper: "Put a roof on the Land Run and you’ve got an idea of the Ford Center atmosphere Thursday night."

OKC got possession, scored on the other end and boom, at that point you knew something was happening.” [...]
