Team option exercised for Scott Brooks

by Royce Young on May 4, 2010 at 11:51 am 27 Comments

From a press release:

Oklahoma City Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced today that the team has exercised its third-year option for the 2011-12 season on Head Coach Scott Brooks.

“We look forward to our players continuing to benefit from Scott’s consistent focus on their development, selfless approach to his work, and commitment to our organizational vision,” said Presti.

Brooks was named Thunder head coach on April 14, 2009, becoming the 16th head coach in franchise history, after serving as interim head coach for the last 69 games of the 2008-09 regular season. Brooks was awarded the Red Auerbach Trophy as the 2009-10 NBA Coach of the Year after leading the Thunder to a 50-32 record in his first full season as head coach. The Thunder posted a 23-18 road record (tied for 6th best in the NBA this season) and finished as the eighth seed in the Western Conference. Under Brooks direction the Thunder led the NBA in blocked shots (5.9 blocks per game) and ranked 7th in defensive field goal percentage (44.8%).

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue to work with the Thunder organization and this great group of players,” said Brooks. “The support that my family and I have been given by this community has been overwhelming and we are thrilled to be a part of it.”

Great we just need to sign him to an extension beyond that as soon as possible.

props :i think if we keep scotty brooks + mo cheeks, we’ll be in great shape.

I'd be stunned if Cheeks doesn't get a job this summer. There are/will be more vacancies, he's got the Thunder "stink" on him now (which suddenly is a good thing), and Westbrook's performance against the Lakers -- seeing as how Cheeks was a damn fine PG himself -- probably ices the cake. I hope he stays but I'd be suprised.

I love coach Brooks and i know a lot of people arent gonna like this but im STILL upset that Nate left.I think that hes the better coach i mean what he did in portland this season with all the injuries is just amazing.
Again having said that Brooks is still the future

I’ve read that Cheeks is a candidate for the Chicago job.

does not surprise me. i think he deserves a head coaching job. i'd just hate to lose him. i think he was a huge part of what the team accomplished this year.

f5alcon :this past season cheeks was still under contract by the 76ers so he couldnt take a head coaching job without forefeiting that salary, but now thats over he can go back to a head coaching position, we may lose him.

That would be a bummer.

f5alcon :@MartzMimic

yeah, i like brooks, but hopefully he grows, some of his stubborness with rotations needs to change.

My thoughts exactly. Also, please loosen the leash on Harden. Please allow Harden, our best 3 point shooter on the floor during final shot situations. Please don't waste TO's during the second half in close games. Please teach some offense.
He has shown me the ability to coach defense. Let's see the full arsenal this year Scotty
