Thabo Sefolosha’s favorite moment of the season? You guys

by Royce Young on May 6, 2010 at 3:44 pm 37 Comments

Chris Silva from the official site had a tremendous piece today about the connection Thunder fans feel to this team. But of course, this part really stood out, at least to me:

He could have rattled off a number of things.

Fifty-two wins … a playoff berth … improved defense … nine-game win streak.

But Thabo Sefolosha went with his gut. Only 12 hours removed from a season-ending Game 6 loss to the L.A. Lakers, Sefolosha was wrapping up his final media session at the team’s practice facility. The Swiss native was asked to name his favorite part of the season.

“I guess the day we came back from Dallas and we had the fans outside of the airport,” Sefolosha recalled. “Coming back and seeing the fans, that was pretty special. It gave me goose bumps coming down the plane, so that was pretty special.”

Of course, I found this incredibly cool. Thinking back to that night, that really was special. It’s a moment I’m sure glad I was a part of. I remember thinking right before Mrs. DT and I left for Will Rogers, “Do I really want to go? What if no one shows up? Eh, let’s not go.” But my little brother and his friend wanted to go and like my brother said, “Hey, at least there will be four of us there.” So we went. And were pleasantly surprised to find at least 100 other maniacs just like us there. What a moment that was to us fans and it’s awesome to hear it was special for the team too.

You guys are so EASY to hi-jack, it is almost a shame! Although I confess I did expect a bit more love for the "Lord of the Rings" references. I did have to Google the characters names and all....

@J.G.--I think Jax keeps going back to the Twilight stuff because he secretly read it and LOVED IT!!! LOL ;)

Women in my experience tend to like the smaller guys more.

HA!

I realize that I've upset the ying/yang of the sports blog by trying to talk girlballer's language. In order to restore balance, I offer the following link: http://www.maxim.com/girls/girls-of-maxim/85426/oklahoma-city-thunder-dancers-2009.html

What did you just do.

Do you know what kind of dude-scorn you're going to bring on this site now?!

I still think your initial reaction to the very first girlballer mention of Twilight is the most accurate (and funny, I still laugh about it every so often) response.

According to Mrs. Jax, the Westbrook thing is about dichotomy. He's the most shy guy on the team, and also the most aggressive guy on the team. She finds it too intriguing to ignore.

I guess if I put it in girlballer terms, he's got a little Edward and a little Jacob in him, and the spontaneity of which one shows up at any given time is too exciting to pass up. Like a moth to a flame...

She likes Krstic because of his name, and it went from making fun of his bad hair to embracing his bad hair. I'm not too sure about her, it really made me question my self confidence ;)

She loves Dwight Howard and his "big sexy shoulders", she's all over the roadmap on players and I've learned to expect the unexpected when she gives her opinion on players. Such as, "Earl Watson got game.. or he had it.. once." True quote from her.

This is weird my wife likes westbrook aswell. He is hipnotizing(sp) our women somehow.

serge followed by thabo followed by westbrook. Although jeff isn't as cute he seems the sweetest.

I dont know if I can speak on behalf of the ladies for the westbrook infatuation, but my friend and I love him because he's always so smiley and kind of little kid cute. We love the way he plays and his enthusiasm.. plus he kind of looks like Ducky on the land before time.. how can you not love that?

oh, but my girlfriend (and exgirlfriend, actually) both think that Serge is by far the hottest guy on the team..

i watched game two with three girl friends of mine.. all three of them kept saying, "He is so cute!" and "awww" and those kinds of things every time Russ smiled or cheered or did his little gun holster thing.. i think it's cause he has a boyish smile and he's the 'small' and cute one out there..

course, i've been a huge Russ fan since day one, so what's that say about me? :)

Man, me and my roommates drove all the way to Dallas to see them and stayed the night there...to bad we don't get any love for making the trip...wish we could have been in okc to greet the team back..

I started dating a girl in early February, and she went from actively ridiculing my Thunder-crush to an active participant, and she's never been interested in sports before. She's similarly enthralled by Westbrook.

We were watching nearly all of the games together by early April, and by the playoffs she was cheering for every rebound and contested shot. Her first ever Thunder game was Game 3 of the LA series--we sat way up high and she yelled the entire game. Definitely a keeper.

My wife, from the moment she first saw him, only knows Serge Ibaka as, "The Model."

Long story short, I was working on an article for the site about Ibaka's potential and she saw a picture of him and asked if "that guy is a model?" I said no, that he was a 6'10 (or 6'11) African sensation and she stood there for a moment, factoring everything before turning back to me and saying, "well he looks like a model, he could probably be one, so I'm calling him 'The Model," and then leaving the room.

Ah, marriage.

But I won't complain, as I have a wife who supports me not only posting, but writing way too often for a sports website that "forces" me to watch every game and waved her pom-poms like she was attacking the Lakers during Game 3. :)

My wife will cry when Thabo's Thunder career is over. She thinks he's pretty damn hot.

We both agrees that Russ kinda looks like a frog. Maybe Kermit. She says he's kinda cute because he's ripped, but that's about it.

She doesn't think Nenad, KD, Jeff, or James are particularly good looking. James mainly because of the photo in the gameday handouts where he looks like a complete psychpath. She does think that Etan ain't bad, except his dumb hair.

She initially came to games with me because it was something to do and she got free ones from her company. Now she's as gung ho as I am and loves going to games ... for the game and not just to see Thabo's sexiness.

Kristic? Really? Please talk some sense into her. or put her on this webiste and maybe we could help.

I'm not sure what I think about a woman that prefers Nenad BTW. That is going to require some further studies and analysis. She has SEEN Thabo right???

@f5alcon and @Jax
This totally reminds me of the Cosmo quiz when the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy movies were first out! They basically did an article predicting what "type" of guy you preferred based on your attraction to each character.
Examples:

if you preferred Aragorn (the human played by Viggio Mortensen) your type was the macho "manly man"

if Legolas (Orlando Bloom's try as a bleached blond elf) you preferred the sensitive, artistic, androgynous type (i.e. "metrosexuals")

if Frodo (the Hobbit played by Elijah Wood) was your guy, you just wanted a buddy to talk to and be your best friend ...(or you were a 9 y/o and WTF are you doing reading Cosmo anyway?!?)

Anyway, might be an interesting exercise for Mrs. Daily Thunder to post about during the off-season? I bet we (the female DT fans) could come up with some gross generalities about what type of girl prefers Westbrook to Jeff Green, or KD to Thabo!!

Whatchathink?

DeWayne

@Jason

My girlfriends favorite player is Nenad. I've explained that he's not a "core" player and don't get her hopes up for him to be here long term. She just does the "la la la I'm not listening" routine and refuses to believe me. She doesn't really understand trades and things, so she was confused as to why someone behind us kept screaming "You suck Earl Watson!" at the Pacers game. All she understood was that he was on the team last year and didn't think he was that bad.

She has a little bit to learn still. :P

What is it about women liking Russell Westbrook? My wife likes him too. I tell myself its because of his amazing basketball talent and athleticism - not in anyway because he is more attractive than me.

justin
justin 5pts

My wife was last into the Sonics when they made the playoff run in 2004-2005 and hasn't really gotten into basketball since this year again when I was watching the Thunder almost every day.

I explained to her that they moved to OKC but everything else was basically the same. The first game she watched this year she likes Russell Westbrook but he's no Antonio Daniels LOL.

Jason
Jason 5pts

@DeWayne
Similar story for me. I wanted season tickets for the 2009-2010 season but I couldnt convince my wife (she doesnt like watching sports that much). I compromised and got one of the smaller packages. She went to all those games and now she is hooked. I was able to convince her to get season tickets next year!

She loved going to all the playoff games and she was cheering louder than me the whole time!

DeWayne
DeWayne 5pts

That last part of the article about his wife (the season ticke holder not Thabo) being a fan must be a fairly common occurance. I think it's partially due to the game of basketball. My girlfriend hates sports, and really hates football. Somehow though she got into the Thunder because she would watch it with me here and there. She hates football even though I watch it all the time. She's been to football games and haded it.

We went to our first Thunder game in December against the Bucks, after watching all the games on TV last season, and she was sold. Now she sends me updates on games when I'm not able to watch them and she even knows the terminology involved. It was fun to watch for me because she went from scrunching her face up and saying "I hate sports" to "When is the next game? We have to wait for HOW long before the season starts again?!"

I am not real optimistic about a major shooting or scoring change from Thabo at this point in his career but good luck with the effort and some others pull it off.

He took about 5.5 shots in the regular season, 4.5 in the playoffs. Because of that low usage, his shooting efficiency is not as important as it is for much higher frequency shooters. But it is still important to shoot better. Not shooting has pluses and minuses.

That was a great article. Fun times.

i really like Thabo. I am confident that he will come back next season with a much improved shot.
