NBA Free Agency: An open letter to Kevin Durant and Jeff Green

by Michael Kimball on June 30, 2010 at 1:03 pm 166 Comments

Rocky Widner/Getty Images

(Please welcome new DT contributor, Patrick James. Patrick is a Thunder season ticket holder and about as die hard a fan as you’ll come across. Plus, he’s really smart. So that’s good. He’s going to contribute some columns here, which I’m excited about. He starts out the way any Thunder fan should – by expressing slightly awkward man love for KD and Uncle Jeff.)

Kevin and Jeff,

Let’s go ahead and hit the pause button and keep it pressed down, because this is pretty much a love letter to you guys.  Thunder fans want you to stay. We want to grow old with you.

We love you, men.

You ARE the Thunder, along with the core group of your teammates who took us for a joyride last season that ended only minutes from May. More than that, you ARE basketball in Oklahoma City. We had a fling with the Chris Paul and the Hornets during their stay, but it becomes clearer with each passing day that the best gift they gave us was the possibility of you. We showed everyone we could be an NBA city, we voted to pay for the arena and renovate it ourselves to show our commitment capacity, and the basketball gods delivered us the team we want to … marry?

That could be best way for us to put it. That’s how we feel, in a fan-to-a-team sense. We want you on the Thunder until retirement do us part — or at least until a victory lap in DC do us part in a dozen years. MJ got one and he wasn’t even from there. But we want to be there with you as partners and adventurers, for better and worse, for as long as you both play ball.

Just about everything we’ve learned about you on the court and off, from the media and social media, makes us like you and your teammates more. The fans see energetic, humble young men who are active in the community, and we swoon. That you’re all friends makes it our own cheesy sports movie. We’ve got the team everybody wants to have, and we know we’re lucky.

You’re the captains of the team that got its playoff baptism when we did. You saw, felt and heard what happened in the Ford Center all year and in the playoffs. We’re ready to eat nails for you. You already know we’ll show up in ice storms if we have to, and if you’re plaing in May soon we’ll brave hail storms and tornadoes too. (We do need to sit down and talk about what to do during severe weather soon. For now all you need to know is to turn on Gary and if you hear the siren, go stand outside and look for the tornado with your neighbors, who will also be standing outside.)

We know we’re not the only factor. The pie is only so big, and we don’t have any say in how the Thunder organization treats you and your teammates when it’s negotiating time for them. But we’re confident they’ll do the right thing because you’re confident too. The Thunder organization has earned our trust along with yours, treating the fans right and building a winning team right away.

But the Thunder has also built a team that can win for a long time, and that’s why we think we’re the perfect match for you. Lots of guys on the roster who won’t get max offers could probably find an extra dollar or million from another team, and we know bigger markets could bring more exposure. And while it’s easy for us to say “What’s a few million more?” when wanting you to stay, maybe we have a point: Where else could you go to get something better than what you have here, where you love your teammates and have a chance to win together for a decade?

We’re not scared you may be leaving. You’ve never said you could, and we know you’re serious when you say Oklahoma City is a good place to live because we know it too. But moments like today are when we have to talk about the future. We think you’re cornerstone players for a franchise that could be the team of the next decade, with more hard work and some good fortune. We think we’re a perfect fit as a city — and we’ve showed you we’re head over heels for you.

So maybe it’s not a sports marriage we’re asking for, but something different. We think the two of you, along with your teammates and our community, can achieve more together than apart.

Will you be great with us?

- Your smitten fans

I am sorry but look at basketball-reference.com advanced stats, Jeff Green might be a great locker room guy and buddy, but he is not worth more than 6-7 million per...hmmm after seeing Channing Frye get $32 over 5, maybe he is worth a bit more than that...God I am happy we have Sam Presti and team...

Vega :Guys, we’re not getting a guy like Jefferson. The team as constructed right now is the team that will take the court on opening night, with possible exception of a veteran third point guard.

I completely agree with this. I was just speculating into next offseason when we potentially have more cap space with the David West scenario. But if Ibaka/Green at the 4 work wonders this year, there may not be much of a need.

But if Collison leaves after his contract is up, we will need to sign a vet.

You can even have the contract descend. (I'm not sure why it isn't done more often ~ iirc, Heinrich's deal is structured in that manner.)

It's possible with Green and maybe Westbrook but not Durant.

Cut Kristic and White and sign Lee.

It is possible to FIX extendtion cotact?? in my opinion it fair for other player in OKC
Green – 5yrs, $ 7 mil each year not raise10%
Westbrook – 5yrs, $10 mil each year not raise10%
With Durant - 5yrs, $15 mil each year not raise10%
if yes this way we can extendtion Ibaka/Harden/Aldrich/Mullens/Maynor i think this way is fair for other player who draft later 3 of them
if we have to extendtion green,westbrook,durant overpaid and still raise10% every year.... i'm afraid like other fanshine will be good just 4-5 year and will going down in after next 5 year .and restart again and agaun..that is not good..i knew it hard but i wish

@ThunderHorn
right, we'd be able to sign those guys, but we'd go over the cap with the other 5-6 guys needed to field a full NBA squad, which, even with 5 guys getting the minimum, would add a few (5?) million to the pot. If harden and ibaka grow to be 40-50 million p/yr players (which they probably will), bennett will for sure have to go to the tax level, even if it was a little... that's the price of having a championship team for 10+ yrs. San Antonio couldn't even avoid it, despite their guys signing below-market contracts...

You know, Ibaka would still be on the team if someone else were added or traded.

we would have to give up a couple young assets though. Id be ok with a future 1st(ours) and a Krstic and White/Weaver etc but nothing more.

Ibaka doesn’t really do anything more than what a typical energy big man does in the NBA right now. Yeah, he has a high ceiling and will be tremendous if everything pans out for him. That’s a big if though.

Id take my chances on him.

If Kahn send Big AL without anything valuable,it means they get nothing but failture after they traded KG.I think they should sign Bill Simons as GM

justin
justin 5pts

@The DON

Ibaka can barely take a step with a ball in his hands, Nene will dunk on you if he's within a six feet circle of the rim. Nene has great hands, Ibaka doesn't. Ibaka is a tremendous weakside shot blocker / defender, Nene isn't. Nene is 270 pounds and impossible to move, Ibaka gets pushed around. Ibaka has a developing jumper, Nene never really did. Nene is a good passer in the paint, Ibaka can't pass the salt on the dinner table.

The only similarities Ibaka and Nene have are that they are black and play basketball. Completely different players, I don't get that comparison at all.

The DON
The DON 5pts

I had a LENGTHY one on one convo with an NBA scout last year in the stands of the Vegas summer league. Keep in mind, this was before Ibaka had even played his rookie season and surpassed everyone's expectations. In our convo I made the Ibaka/Nene comparison and I told him after watching this guy in the Orlando summer league I thought he had the potential to be on Nene's level one day. That scout then told me that in his opinion Ibaka has way more potential than Nene. Guess what, after watching Ibaka last year as a 20 year old rookie with no experience, you'd have to be a fool to disagree with him.

So again I ask, why the hell are you people so obsessed with signing Al Jeffersons and David Lees and Nenes and David Wests of the world? We are SET at the starting PF spot, PERIOD.

Now if only Brooks was smart enough to realize that and move Green to the bench for Ibaka......

Agreed. and this whole Free Agent Summit thing makes me glad the Thunder are not in 'drooling' mode like so many other teams who are desperate they get asked to the prom by one of these free agents.

justin
justin 5pts

My only issue with Nene is that he's been terrible in the last two playoffs.

Crow
Crow 5pts

Both get close to 3 assists, 2 turnovers per game (less than 1 from ball-handling) if you adjust for Nene's lower usage.

ThunderHorn
ThunderHorn 5pts

Didn't think it was possible but that Free Agent Summit thing only makes me further hate Dan LebaTARD.

Crow
Crow 5pts

"How about Nene handling the ball on the perimeter?"

I don't know that precisely that but he has very similar Assist% and Turnover%s as David West and each are good for PFs at both.

justin
justin 5pts

Gay Johnson Love Sessions....

justin
justin 5pts

@JFalc

I agree with your opinion on Green.

Vega
Vega 5pts

@shiki=4 seasons
He actually wants Al gone, so he would not be crazy.

Assuming they sign Gay, the Wolves' lineup would look something like this:

PG: Flynn/Sessions/Bjelica
SG: Johnson/Webster/Bjelica/Brewer/Ellington/Hayward
SF: Gay/Johnson/Webster/Bjelica/Hayward
PF: Jefferson/Love/Bjelica/Darko
C: Darko/Pekovic/Jefferson/Hollins

Logjam everywhere but point guard. Nice.

justin
justin 5pts

@JFalc

I like David West a lot and think he'd be a great fit I'm just worried about his age. He has low minutes so he'd be a 'young' 30 years old, but still. I'd prefer someone a little more dynamic... Al Jefferson is one of the best low post players in the league and draws double teams, Nene is great on the break and unstoppable with a lane to the rim.

I suppose if we're looking for a veteran leader to put us over the top at that point we could do a whole lot worse than David West.

ThunderHorn
ThunderHorn 5pts

@justin

then he definitely won't be getting one.

JFalc
JFalc 5pts

For the Thunder, I think West is better fit than Nene or Al Jefferson simply because West is so developed offensively.

For a multitude of reasons, I even would rather have West over David Lee. Of course Lee is younger but I do not trust that Lee will not regress. He has been on a BAD team in a BAD conference, and he has put up quality stats for only two years in a row.

Also, I'm not sure Lee would ever be interested in coming to OKC whereas David West has been here and presumably liked his experience here.

Remember, when West was hitting clutch shots while the Hornets were in OKC? Fun fun Fun. Take that Gilbert Arenas...right back at you. Take that Tracy McGrady!

If I am correct, Collison's (large) contract will be up at the end of this upcoming year. Imagine pluggin West in for Collison at an extra 3 million per year (and a time commitment to West). Wow, what an upgrade that would be.

Again, this is really all about Jeff Green and why it is obvious to me that the Thunder should wait out Jeff Green into next summer.

Crow
Crow 5pts

I guess Kenyon Martin and the rest of the Nuggets knocked his FG% down.

West has been between PER19-20 for 5 straight regular seasons.

Two earlier years of playoffs at 19 and 21 but the last time in 08-09 it was 12.

His existing contract will still be on the books when Harden / Ibaka are due for extensions, it'll be his final year I think.

Greg

ThunderHorn :
I doubt Sef gets an extension when his contract is up unless he’s become a much better shooter.

I'd bet the house on this one.

justin

@Greg

Nene isn't that great a defensive player. He's an offensive weapon. Him and Serge are basically opposites.

ThunderHorn
ThunderHorn 5pts

@justin
How about Nene handling the ball on the perimeter? Or guarding opposing 4's who can drive past him?

I think Ibaka, given some weight, could have a game similar to Nene. A lot of their offensive value in their ability to run the floor, and also are similar defensively.

JFalc
JFalc 5pts

Some people have raised some good points that we could disagree on (i.e. David West or Al Jefferson or David Lee)

but I originally brought up David West in the context of Jeff Green.

The real issue is that with someone as good as David West in the background (or others), why sign Jeff Green now?

I think it would not be wise to do so. Wait it out. Give it another year.

In my opinion, there is no good reason why the Thunder should sign Jeff Green this summer. I like Jeff Green. I will continue to root for Jeff Green but don't re-sign him just yet.

justin
justin 5pts

@Greg

It's exciting offensively, Nene's one of the best finishers in the league and he's playing out of position. He'd be a beast at PF...

justin
justin 5pts

ThunderHorn :@ThunderHorn
20 mil UNDER the cap i mean, which means we’ll probably have room to sign most of those guys to reasonable deals without hitting the tax.

With those deals in place, assuming they are escalating (Durant's has to be), and changing Russ to 5/55, they will be $38.47 million by the season Serge, Harden, and Maynor are due for extensions. Add in Thabo and that's about $42 million. Add Aldrich and that's $44.5 million for five players under contract. Retaining all the young guys under those circumstances would be very difficult.

Greg
Greg 5pts

What has West's PER been over the years?

Greg
Greg 5pts

And West isn't an All-Star anymore, and is about to turn 30. I'd say he makes 10/year max in his next contract. Unless a full season with CP3 scorches his value, that's a possibility.

Crow
Crow 5pts

Just as Westbrook could up his PER with a few changes if Green did some combo of taking 1 less mid-range and 1 more inside shot or set of free throws, grabbing one more board or making 1 more assist or did the levels he does now in 5 less minutes his PER probably could rise into at least the 16-17 range. Time to do it.
