Kevin Durant to sign a five-year extension with the Thunder

by Royce Young on July 7, 2010 at 9:48 am 112 Comments

From KD’s Twitter:

Exstension for 5 more years wit the #thunder….God Is Great, me and my family came a long way…I love yall man forreal, this a blessing!

I honestly don’t know how much I can add to this. We knew it was coming. KD has said all along he wanted to be in OKC and from our short experience with Durant so far, there was no reason not to believe him.

Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed and of course this doesn’t become official until tomorrow, but I heard a number of around $84 million tossed around. No official confirmation on that though. Marc Spears of Yahoo reports that it’s a firm five-year deal with no opt-out after the fourth year. So he’s CLEARLY totally committed to OKC. And if I understand Larry Coon’s FAQ properly, this extension doesn’t go into effect until after KD’s current deal ends in 2011, meaning we actually have at least six years left with Durant.

As Chris Ballard of SI put it, “Not sure what’s wrong with Kevin Durant. Dude signs 5-year contract and forgets to hold TV special, flirt w/other team or co-opt headlines. It’s almost as if Durant’s number one priority is to play basketball.”

Seriously, what’s up with KD? It’s not all about basketball, teammates and winning. You gotta think about your brand. You gotta think about the fame. You gotta think about going global. These are the reasons I wouldn’t give Durant up for anyone – he’s all about basketball. He’s all about winning. He’s all about team. And for at least the next six years, he’s all about Oklahoma City.

To all OKC fans from a Steve Nash/Suns fan :"Congrats on a great future with classy KD. From the little I know about OKC, you definitively have an upward 5 yr plan from top to bottom, the opposite of my Suns"

Nail on head, Mr. Ballard. Nail on head.

@James
You're right. I was just speculating, who knows it could be Pleiss or even Mullens that develops into the future center.

@Greg
Yeah, the OKC/LA series did a lot to thaw me out when it comes to the Lakers and Kobe. For all their faults, you could tell they cared about the sport and were serious about winning. Lebron could still learn a thing or two from Kobe - and KD!!

Jax Raging Bile Duct :Is it sad that you could have easily confused me with the double rainbow guy when I heard the news this morning?

Hahahah... that's the funniest thing I've seen in a while. Apparently, the guy has several vidoes of similar "quality"

Greg :@f5alcon Within a few years, I think Harden becomes that B player, Ibaka and Aldrich B- for their defensive contributions. Then we have A+ KD, A- Russell Westbrook.

Aldrich hasn't done a think yet. I wouldn't put him in Harden's or Ibaka's class at this point.

I used to like Lebron more than Kobe, because I think Kobe is overhyped, selfish, a bit of a chucker (he doesn't have a very good PER, he should feed Gasol about twice as much as he actually does), and I loved vintage Shaq.

But now... at least Kobe cares. Maybe Kobe wants to be perceived as the best, and he's selfish because of it, but at least he plays hard, warms up, puts it all on the line. LBJ is just such a jokester, a sideshow, it just makes me so angry. Why has he no desire to even have one post move? Everyone who guards him gives up about 3 inches and at least 30 pounds. And he has so much court vision he could pass out of double teams in the post with ease. KD may not have as much natural talent as LBJ, but at least he's making the most of what he was given.

Gotta say even though I knew it was coming based on all of KD's comments it's made my day/week/month/year to see him sign and how classy he's being about the whole thing. Wouldn't trade him for any other player in the league.

Congrats to all Thunder fans, you've got the greatest guy in sports right now, bar none. 100% intensity on the court, 100% humility off it. I can't see anything heading south as long as he and Presti stay around.

From ESPN:

Durant's agent, Aaron Goodwin, told ESPN.com's J.A. Adande the deal will be worth about $86 million over five years. The specific amount will be determined when the salary cap numbers are finalized on July 8, when Durant can officially sign the contract.

Marc Stein says the deal is 5/86 which is impossible under the $56.1 million salary cap projection. That deal would require a cap of ~$57 million.

I'll be really interested to see if a whole summer off can do the trick to get Kobe closer to his prime output. Unfortunately for him, these injuries have been the type to linger. They'll have to make some moves within a couple years to stay on top, otherwise this next season is their last chance IMO. Especially with Phil gone after then, possibly Artest and Odom too.

If we don't win a championship within 6 years, KD could leave and no one here could blame him a bit.

But I like our chances to get one, and possibly more, for a lot of reasons.

I thought FOR SURE Durant would have an option after the 4th, like Justin said it wouldn't hurt him.

So now we have KD for 6 more years! This guys is incredible. I don't know how he continues to stay this humble.

Guys with this talent and attitude (in this generation and time) are once in a lifetime players, KD deserves a lot of championships if he continues to carry this demeanor and always continue to be a better basketball player.
