Nenad Krstic fights like a little brother

by Michael Kimball on August 20, 2010 at 12:46 pm 39 Comments

Now that I’ve stopped laughing over the footage of Nenad Krstic and the Serbian basketball team in a brawl with Greece, it’s time to analyze Krstic’s fighting prowess. Or lack thereof.

(Unfortunately for Krstic perhaps, we’re not the only people investigating, and he already spent a night in jail. People from Greece’s sports violence squad are looking into the brawl. Why don’t we have a sports violence squad in the U.S.? Would this be to investigate sports violence or initiate it? Can I be the commissioner either way?)

Any good analysis starts with the source material, so let’s go to the tape. Just watching it straight through without pausing or slowing it for a more in-depth look, Krstic’s general strategy jumps out to anybody who has or is a younger sibling. It’s a mixture of cheap shots, apparently unwarranted escalation by involving weapons, fighting only from protected positions and a particular fury: He fights like a little brother. Even though he might have a little more edge to him, in the interest of alliteration, lets just call him the Serbian Slapfighter.

Krstic’s first violent foray into the YouTube box comes at about the 0:12 mark, and his little brother-like strategy is already showing. Basically he jumps in, using another engaged teammate as a shield, and throws some open- and closed-fist punches and is wildly grabbing at the face area of the Greek dude. He exits the camera’s view and then reappears at about the 0:20 mark, throwing a couple of wild elbows and weird push-punch-grab moves. The three-moves-at-once type attacks are similar to the uncoordinated methods used by rage-blinded younger siblings.

And then he grabs a chair and throws it at some dude's head. Right before he basically runs away. Right out of the younger siblings' playbook.

The next time we see Krstic as an active participant in the melee is when he really begins to remind me most of battles I had with my own little brother growing up. I’ve got two years on him, which is usually just enough to win a fight in almost any circumstance. But he would use his (then) smaller size and (still) better quickness to his advantage. Long after a previous fight had stopped, he’d wait until I wasn’t paying attention and launch a quick attack from behind. Then he would run away, either locking himself in his room or jumping back first on a couch and kicking wildly to deter any attempt to beat the crap out of him. Or he’d grab a bat or stick or whatever, escalating a fight that had previously not involved anything worse than kicks and punches.

Krstic echoes these methods beginning at the 0:39 mark, when he jumps in on a fight that had mostly passed him by and launches a flurry of punches to an opponent who is in a vulnerable position. Pretty cheap. He kind of makes the Kobe Face with the chin stuck out and exhibits more rage in a few seconds than we’ve seen in 1 1/2 seasons in the Ford Center. But as soon as someone brings the fight back to him, he retreats at least 50 feet and waits until a cadre of teammates eliminates the threat against him.

And then he grabs a chair and throws it at some dude’s head. Right before he basically runs away. Right out of the younger siblings’ playbook.

So Thunder fans must face the reality that, while it’s sort of exciting to know that Nenad is ready to brawl for his teammates, he’s basically got a cheap fighting style. But that doesn’t mean Oklahoma City can’t reap some benefits and search for positives.

It must first be noted that at no point has this style been labeled ineffective. I mean, who was bleeding when this thing was over, Krstic or the Greek guy? Right. The guy who got hit in the head with the metal part of a chair. Even if it may not be pretty, the Thunder knows it has a player who can inflict damage when need be.

Second, in the NBA, people are going to expect the European guy with a Slavic accent to fight dirty. We deal in stereotypes, and we prefer the image of the manly American fighting bravely against the cheating, sweaty foreign guy who may be working for the Russians somehow and wears weird clothes. So other fans around the NBA won’t be as mad at the Thunder if it was Krstic throwing cheap elbows as opposed to James Harden.

And finally, the Thunder was able to establish it has a crazy guy without having to sacrifice anything on an NBA court. You know this video is making the rounds in league circles. I can hear the veteran leaders on opposing teams now, speaking to hot-headed younger teammates: “Hey man I know Nick Collison just got you with that elbow on the rebound, but you need to just chill out. You don’t want to get suspended. And you definitely don’t want to mess with these guys anyway — don’t you remember Nenad Krstic throwing a chair at that dude this summer? Just leave him alone man. He’s unpredictable and you could end up with a chair in your face.” All of that was accomplished without an on-court incident that cost the Thunder some suspended players.

We’ve learned that although Nenad Krstic has a posse, he doesn’t need one.

@Tas G.

If you order me into the swamp, can I check and make sure the peacekeepers there aren't Dutch first?

I'm sorry for being ignorant of the fact that nationalism is actually good for the Balkans. Thanks for educating me. My comment was in response to the fellow that suggested it was a good thing for someone to retaliate that way based on national pride.

Have you ever seen Shaq throw a punch..?
It looks worse than his FTs
Actually, most basketballs fights are bad.
Yes, even worse and gayer than baseball fights

One of our players get involved in a game scap and the PC police wants him fired?
WTF? This has nothing to do with the NBA and the team will give hring im a generic 'dont make us look bad' speech.
I love the justification 'He wasnt trying to hit this guy but another instead', brilliant!!
Bring that intensity here and Ill be thrilled once the season starts.

National sports are something we dont know or do much, when compared to other continents. Every sport has national teams that function non-stop, there is no 'naming of a team' therefore, its ongoing. You play 2 years of qualifcations against neighbours to qualify for the worlds, then play the following 2 years to qualify for continental cups like Euros and repeat the cycle. The intensity is high for these players, not just for the few weeks beforehand.
So it might seem strange to see this in a friendly but these teams play each other, very, very often. Shit happens.
Its barely worth a mention except to see that big fat black dude.
Its like refrigerator Perry played basketball. Surprisingly agile for a big tub of lard but hes still a fat boy and those never last in the NBA.

And yes, Ozark, go back to the swamps, Greece and Serbia have the best relations of any two countries in the region. The serbs culture and religion comes from Greece and during the dark ages (the Ottoman empire), the greeks helped keep their national identity. BUt hey, youve read a whole paragraph in Readers Digest once so Im sure you must know it all.

Yeah, because what southeast Europe really needs more of is hypersensitive nationalism in every aspect of mundane day to day life.

I don't know which is worse: Krstic backpedalling or doing a faceplant chasing a Japanese pitcher.

p.s. It's clear that some of you have never been in a good old fashioned fight, especially a big brawl involving multiple people. When your friends/countrymen/teammates are being attacked you attack back, by any and all means necessary

This incident single-handedly makes me do a 180 on Kristic

he is now YESNADS KRISTIC from this day forward

LOL @ some of the clowns in here

All season Kristic plays like a b*tch yet they say nothing, but now he finally shows something worth commending him for, and the response is "I kinda wish sofo beat the crap out of kristic"

Only an absolute sissy ass clown would see a man attacking a guy who is beating up his fellow countryman and teammate as a negative

Why does NBA or Thunder punish him?He didn't throw a chair in NBA.
They played in Greece, team Greece was aggressive in defense, and the refs were Greek.Serbian were angry because they thought the refs were unfair.I know Nenad was wrong, but he had some reasons to do it.

Are we going to have a USA vs Lithuania game thread for Saturday 3pm EST? Also if not we should have one definitely for Sunday vs Spain. I know weekends everyone is busy, but would be nice to have a thread to talk about Durant and Russ.

@Todd
he says that he didnt mean to throw the chair and that it slipped out of his butter fingers.

Next off he wont be cut for salary cap reasons, traded maybe, but outright cut no way.

If the nba wont punish him, i doubt the team will, we traded for etan who had a history of getting in fist fights during practice. Obviously this is a bit different, but it isnt chemistry affecting for the thunder.

My little bro and I fought all the time when we were younger and this IS his tactic. Cheap-shot and run and (scream and cry) so my dad comes to save him.
Then one day, I was hanging with my friend Josh(a black dude) and my brother(age 13 or so) thought it would be funny call Josh the "N" word in front of us. Being a white-dude, I looked over at him to confirm the offense and knew it was beat-down time! We gave him non-stop body shots up a flight of stairs until my dad heard the ruckus and demanded to know what had happened. We told Daddy, an old-school redneck, ex-football player at Arkansas, what my bro had called him and he said, "Kyle...sometimes you say the wrong thing to the wrong guy." and he went back to his room.
JUSTICE AT LAST!!
The look on Kyle's face was classic as Josh and I continued to pummel him til we were too tired to go on and mom intervened.
Stick and MOVE!!!
GO THUNDER!!!

Watching the video again has me feeling like I'm examining the Zapruder Film, looking for the mysterious Random Shirtless Dude instead of the Umbrella Man. But I think what originally got Krstic wound up was seeing one of the Greek players spit on a teammate. It takes place early on, between the two guys that started the whole thing. The Serbian player sort of pushes the Greek player in the face, and gets spit on in response. That's when Krstic appears, grabbing and punching at "Spit Man" from behind.

Then apparently he and Sofo got into off-camera a short time later, as the camera just catches was was apparently the end of Krstic-Sofo Round I. That might have been what triggered round two a bit later. Could be that the sight of Sofo's defenseless back was a little too hard for Krstic to resist. Seeing Sofo from the front, and unhappy, was apparently somewhat different.

Have to say though, if the Thunder was to decide to cut Krstic from the team because of this, I'd be okay with it. Up until the moment he grabbed that chair, it was heat-of-the-moment-bad sort of stuff, but not much more. As soon as he left fly with that metal chair though, it went from bad to infamous YouTube moment. And he is forever branded as a cheap-shot artist, if not an outright coward. The latter he may not be, but the sight of that flying chair, thrown while on the retreat from someone he was beating on from behind, will stay with him for good. I'm sure he wouldn't do it again if given the chance. But that's the problem with blind, impulsive anger. You can't go back and un-throw a chair.

no it's not weird Greece has a sports violence squad, not when fans get killed during a women's volleyball game, as it happened a couple of years ago. Not when fights among fans in soccer and basketball are as common.

I'm a little offended at the way you portray little brothers, as I am one. But then, when you are wrestling with your brother at school sanctioned meets, maybe you just never get the chance to learn cheap-shotting tactics.

Diane

I think maybe they have to have those sports violence squads cause of what happens when they play soccer over there - you know how that goes.
I think its kind of silly to be put in jail cause of that little fight. In the NBA David Stern would just suspend you for a couple of games.

"Krstic, for his part, said he did not mean to throw the chair which was apparently aimed at Schortsanitis but instead struck Bourousis, who did not suit up for the game and appeared to be trying to stay between Sofo and Krstic. Hilariously enough, Krstic and his coach, the legendary Dusan "Duda" Ivkovic, who had already been ejected from the game by the time the fight began, say Krstic grabbed the chair because a few Greek fans, including the bro dubbed "Random Shirtless Dude" in this morning's Works, had approached the Serbian players.

"I believe he acted in self-defense and grabbed a chair after some half-naked (Greek) fans rushed into the court," Ivkovic told the Associated Press. "The chair fell from his hand and grazed Bouroussis." "

I'm not going to hate on him too much. I've been in a couple of scraps like this (not in real games though, just playground) and, like nenad, im not a fighter. But if you see one of your friends getting pounded on, instinct can kind of just take over.

you can tell he wanted to brawl and help out his bros, but he didn't want to get his ass kicked, so he kind of did the in-between.

I vote that when we get rid of those contracts at the end of the year, if we wind up with a spare roster spot or two we should go get Big Sofo.

Sure, it might be adding insult to injury for Kristic, but if he comes cheap I think it would be worth it to have a 345 lb dude around to go shove Gasol and Bynum around when we play the Fakers.

Probably not going to play many minutes, but we could use an inexpensive Laimbeer type enforcer that's smart enough to not totally lose control.
