Somehow, some way, OKC gets it done in Portland, 107-106

BOX SCORE

Don’t look now, but through five games the Thunder has a better record this season than last.

Just don’t ask me how.

Oklahoma City battled a stagnant offense and mostly porous defense for much of its game Thursday in Portland but managed a disjointed 107-106 win over the Trail Blazers. Kevin Durant kinda-sorta broke out of his season-opening slump to finish with 28 points on 11-24 shooting and played all but 32 seconds of the game.

The Thunder resembled the largely unwatchable team we saw in a blowout losses to the Jazz at home and Clippers on the road this week for most of the second and third quarters. Oklahoma City squandered a seven point first-quarter lead and needed a 6-0 run to tie the game early in the fourth quarter, surviving its own mistakes and taking advantage of Portland’s to keep the game close through the rest of regulation and force overtime.

The statistic that jumps out the most is assists: The Blazers finished with 27 to the Thunder’s 12, only five of which came in the second half and overtime. Oklahoma City barely moved the ball for long stretches, a discouraging trend over the first two weeks of the season. Even the stretches during which the Thunder staged runs to keep Portland within reach were mostly made on the break, on put-backs or on the free-throw line. The Thunder attempted only one pass in the half-court in its first four possessions of overtime — although Oklahoma City turned it over on its third pass of the fifth OT possession.

Portland mostly had its way with the Thunder on both ends of the court in the second and third quarters. The Blazers rained down several alley-oop dunks, penetrated the lane at will and kept Oklahoma City off balance defensively with good ball movement. Interior defense was again a particular sore spot for the Thunder as the Portland wings showed no fear in driving the lane, and LaMarcus Aldridge and Marcus Camby often found little resistance near the basket.

But the bottom line is that the Thunder sits at 3-2 after five games in — wait for it — the best five-game start in the franchise’s Oklahoma City history. The Thunder has showed early-season progress in the only true stat that matters. It sure doesn’t feel like it to anyone who has watched the games, but it’s true. For the coaching staff, it’s time to earn their paychecks. Oklahoma City clearly needs work in all phases of the game.

One troubling thing I noticed is that it hardly seems like the players were having a lot of fun. Throughout last season, and during the FIBA World Championship this summer for Durant and Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City’s young players were playing with exuberance, tenacity and energy. It seems missing right now.

In any case, the Thunder are two weeks into the season and above .500. Whether it feels like it or not, Oklahoma City has never known such heights this early in the season.

NOTES:

  • The game didn’t tip off until about 9:55 p.m. CDT due to the late ending of New York’s win over Chicago on TNT. I’m sure that contributed to the absolute deadness of the Rose Garden throughout most of the first quarter. There was basically no energy, and without piped-in sound during many of the possessions, there was an eerie quiet. It suited the Thunder as Oklahoma City got out to an early lead. Mental note: Don’t be in a rush to get to TNT home games on time this season if Oklahoma City has the network’s second slot.
  • Kevin Durant started out on fire before cooling down significantly during much of the second half. KD hit a long 2-pointer at the shot clock buzzer with about four minutes left in the first quarter, and I thought it was a good sign of things to come. He finished 2-of-5 from beyond the arc and shot much better than he had in his previous four games. I said to Royce before the game that I thought it was more important for KD to get untracked than for the Thunder to get a win, and I still feel that way. Better to get both. But Durant has clearly been feeling the pressure, as have his teammates. Maybe it will ease up on all of them.
  • Taking a lead into the second quarter was crucial. In Oklahoma City’s two losses, the Thunder fell behind early and never recovered. This time Oklahoma City waited until later to fall behind, but at least the Thunder came to play from the opening tip tonight.
  • James Harden had a decent shooting night by missing only two of his five shots. But he played 25 minutes — Harden needs to take more than one shot every five minutes of playing time (and shoot a good percentage) for the Thunder to have a lot of scoring punch off the bench. It’s still too early to be very worried about him, but Oklahoma City needs more from Harden and more out of the 2-guard offensively in general.
  • Westbrook scored 14 of his 28 points in the first 18 minutes of the game, and he did so quietly. I’m not sure how that’s possible. In other news, Westbrook is the best rebounding point guard in the NBA. Bar none. Especially on the offensive end. There is no debate.
  • There is also no debate that Westbrook shouldn’t be shooting five 3-pointers, because he might miss all five of them like he did in Portland. Harden only took one. Oklahoma City would be better if that trend flips as the season moves on.
  • And staying at the point guard position, Andre Miller out-quicked Westbrook a couple of times in the first half. The most notable plays were on a blow-by drive to the rim and a steal on an attempted crossover. I used to watch a lot of Mountain West basketball oddly enough so I’ve been watching him since his college days at Utah. The guy has been making plays for a long time. I like Andre Miller.
  • Did anyone listen to Charles Barkley at halftime? That was my favorite part of having no choice but to watch the national broadcast. But Chuck called out the Thunder for playing poor defense in the first half. “They play defense like I did,” Barkley said in the TNT studio. “They’re just out there fakin’ it.” He was right. The Thunder’s effort was almost as poor as its execution. Barkley said the Thunder needs a big guy to do its defensive dirty work. NICK COLLISON, WHERE ARE YOU?!
  • Thabo Sefolosha is an important member of the team to be sure. But that air-ball to start the third quarter … ugh.
  • I’ll bet Portland fans will be complaining about the telecast. It seemed like all anyone cared about was the Thunder, even when the Blazers were playing well. The focus was clearly on Oklahoma City all night.

Let’s end with the note most likely to generate the same old comment war. Advanced statistics are incredibly useful and mean a lot. Ignore them at your peril. But they simply do not have a good way to evaluate the total impact of a guy like Jeff Green. He was the only starter to take more than 10 shots and make more than half his buckets, and he had one of the biggest plays of the night late in overtime, and as usual it was one that won’t show up on the stat sheet: He saved a ball from flying out of bounds with less than 24 seconds left and the Thunder nursing a lead, forcing the Blazers to foul and letting Durant virtually ice the game at the line.

I know what the numbers say about Green. There are people who point to numbers and say Green is no good, and nothing will ever change their mind. There are also people who point to games like tonight’s to say Green is one of the Thunder’s most valuable players. I’m in the latter camp, now and forever. And the Thunder coaching staff seems to agree with me, as yet again he got the second-most minutes on the team.

Next up: Celtics on Sunday at home.

Starting lineup this season is starting out 4 points worse than the average for the rest of lineups. Last season it was 2 points worse.

The 3-2 record is the absolute best they could have made of the first 5 games given the stats.

Paul Milsap's start is suggesting that Portland and other teams may not have offered him enough money.

Crow

If you want a player 6=8+ who already scores over 13 points a game with 4+ FTAs, you aren't going to get any of the guys already in the league and already in those roles better than Green. If your criteria were different, in any of several ways, you have options. But the Thunder apparently want big per game scoring from him or at least that is what they are getting from him.

Crow

5 games isn't enough to prove it but Ibaka has gotten 28-30 minutes in 3 games. Fouling out of one and context seem to explain the other two. Ibaka can get 30 minutes with them using Green exactly as they have. Ibaka probably should.

i dont think jg to the bench is the answer, not with this roster

Exactly. He's by far the third best scorer on this team, and can actually create his own shot. Without him getting major minutes, the offense will suffer far more than the defense will benefit. If he's just standing around bricking 3s that's one thing, but so far he's done a much better job of driving to the basket and drawing contract.

Going forward, he's probably not a 4 on a championship team. But unless Presti brings in more scoring at the 2 or the 5, he gives the Thunder their best chance to win. Ideally, I would like to see Green at the 3 and Durant the 2, but we'll see where Presti decides to go after this year.

@kfmsooner
Umm, he was saying Ibaka should replace Kristic, not Green.

kfmsooner

From ESPN's Daily Dime...just to show the posters here at DT aren't that crazy after all:

"While Durant and Russell Westbrook get top billing with matching 28-point, 11-rebound performances, the unsung hero was reserve forward Serge Ibaka. He completely erased Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge in the second half, guarding him for 20 minutes and permitting just two points from the Blazers forward.

"He just plays hard and battles him," said Brooks. "He doesn't give him ground, doesn't give him an inch."

Ibaka's performance came after frontcourt starters Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic were repeatedly abused by Aldridge in the first half. The smaller Green was simply overpowered physically, while the less mobile Krstic rarely got within chair-throwing distance. Aldridge hit the 20-point plateau early in the third quarter and had missed only two shots when Ibaka checked in. At the time the Thunder were down by eight and Krstic had just picked up his fourth foul flailing at an Aldridge drive.

Ibaka would play the rest of the game, barring a couple of last-second situational substitutions, and his low-post defense helped solidify the rest of the Oklahoma City defense and pave the way for their rally.

In fact, the question now is how long the Thunder can get away without starting him. While Brooks said before the game he would be very careful to make any lineup changes with his group, the case for Ibaka is becoming overwhelming. He doesn't space the floor as well as Krstic and he fumbles a lot of passes, but his athleticism and defensive energy more than offset those deficits."

Seems other people who "know basketball" also realize JG isn't the answer.

The Jeff Green debate always takes precedence over the Nenad debate. Probably b.c we have a better option at PF in Ibaka. But, I would argue that Nenad is the worst rotation player we have. Until Aldrich is ready to play or we trade for someone, Krstic has to play 18-24 per game. Unfortunately.

Truth is, if Aldrich develops into the player we hope he will be, or if we plug in a better ture center via trade, Jeff Green's value and production should go up.

Noted. Keep doing what you're doing Justin. I've always enjoyed your input. I'm just trying to get us all to take a step back, take a deep breath, and try to push aside a little bit of our critical natures to make room for just a little bit of the joy of just watching dudes bounce a ball. Not trying to change anyone, just feel we could use a group hug and a "Thunder Up!". Talk-chewing over sports is fun, that's why we're all here. Let's just remember to also have fun watching "our guys" play ball, for as long as they are "our guys".

Is anyone else not seeing the value of Nenad Krstic on this team? When he is in the game, the Thunder have no inside presence - offensively or defensively. I believe Krstic is a good player, just not a fit for the Thunder right now. I would much rather see Aldrich getting more minutes. True, he is not as capable of a scorer as Krstic, but we don't need another scorer.

He's been great. If we could make threes he'd have ~8 assists a game to go with the rest.

Im glad they dont read this site. Yesterdays negative pandemonium almost put me off this site. Had teh Thunder lost yesterday, Im pretty sure I would not have come to it. Also, were all highly opinionated scrubes, lest you forget. No one hear could coach a team.

Daniel Plainview

My one critique, more so an observation, of my favorite player on the planet, Kevin Durant: Ive noticed him being a little lax on the defensive end and forcing it on the offensive end. If this is true, I think its perfectly natural. He has appeared at times to not pursue rebounds that could have been his and swat shots he could have easily have swatted. I think he is worried that all his summer activities might run him down over the course of the season. He had 3 rebs in OT and 1 (Roy said maybe a second) block(s) in crunch time. He can be a beast on the defensive end when he wants to be. He always improves as the season progresses and I cant wait to watch him refine his game and become more savvy.

For the record, I don't have any problems with JG's critics. I'm even willing to agree with them. I just don't understand why we, who have NO SAY in the matter, have to go through this every day. I use to wish the Thunder players would read this site, but these days I find myself hoping they stay away.

When we were bottom-feeders and a team full of nobodys, this board was full of optimism and looking towards the future. Now we're a decent team, and suddenly everything needs to be "fixed". It saddens me. I want my old joy-to-read DT back! BTW, still love you all.

I always like trade rumors:

"ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports the Bulls are considering trading forward James Johnson to Charlotte.

Stein writes: "Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that a trade sending Johnson to Charlotte has emerged one option, but it remains to be seen if such talks get serious ... or if Johnson remains as available as he was in the offseason after seizing a rotation spot under new coach Tom Thibodeau."

It was not revealed what Chicago would get back from the Bobcats, or if this might be part of a multi-team trade."

Again, for the hundredth time, we’re not being negative about Green. We’re saying he’s a clutch player who is a great perimeter defender who is asked to play out of position – which magnifies his weaknesses. And he shoots a few too many long jumpers.

That's all I have ever said about Uncle Jeff. I really like his offensive game this year.

Jax Raging Bile Duct

@Patrick James

Patrick, those of us who comment on Jeff Green are being more fair to that subject that you are being to us. We constantly state that Jeff is a good player who is a great perimeter defender who is playing out of position. He is a poor post defender and he is undersized for it anyway, so how can he succeed there? He can't. He isn't.

LMA had 10 of Portland's first 12 points, 4 of those off of alley oop dunks over Green. It took Brooks forever to do it, but he finally called for Russ to double immediately in the post whenever LMA had the ball, and eventually switched Ibaka onto him and Serge defended him really well.

Again, for the hundredth time, we're not being negative about Green. We're saying he's a clutch player who is a great perimeter defender who is asked to play out of position - which magnifies his weaknesses. And he shoots a few too many long jumpers.

You're getting defensive and antagonistic, and I think you owe us a bit more than that attitude.

Roy did have that great tuck and under double pumper (Eh, oddly, I wasnt trying to be poetic) when Russ and KD doubled up on him.

Man, what luck it was for us in the first half for Portland to seemingly hit everything? Aldridge looked like a God in the first half. however, we did end up with a better FG%. That was hard to believe.

justin
justin 5pts

@Daniel Plainview

Brandon Roy looks a step or two slow already at 26. Sad situation in Portland. He's still a great player but he's relying a ton on his jumper now. I couldn't believe he didn't take KD to the rack on that play. He played right into his hands.

Daniel Plainview
Daniel Plainview 5pts

Yes, Green is a very good player. However, he has the misfortune of playing on a team in which his position is already taken by one of teh greats.

I like Green, he offers a lot, but his defensive liability at PF is too much for this team to take.

Daniel Plainview
Daniel Plainview 5pts

QUOTABLE II: "I had a feeling (Kevin Durant) was going to sit on the jumper, because he's pretty long. When he went past, I couldn't tell if he got a piece of (the ball) or not. But when I let go, it didn't feel right on release."
- Brandon Roy, on his missed 22-footer that could have won the game at the end of regulation play.

Thats off NBA.com notebook

GOOD MOVE: Oklahoma City switched Kevin Durant onto Brandon Roy in the second half, and Roy made only 2 of 10 shots in the final two quarters and overtime.

A disclaimer: I am not tooting Justin's horn. I often have wanted to call him out for his negativity, but I sit back and read and let things ride. The above paragraph is to get him to side with me, however, I noticed others too are beginning to recognize some more of his negative points, but again, his research and acumen often come through.

Daniel Plainview
Daniel Plainview 5pts

Justin is one of the more astute observers here; More often than not, he is a realist but I do think he is a bit negative at times. It hurts many of this forms raging optimism which Ive already admitted I am as guilty as anyone. He does tend to beat up on Green, but thats not Greens fault. Green is a Small forward forced to play Power forward. If we ever become contenders with this roster, it will be because Ibaka has replaced him as a starter, and Cole has become a solid role player with 20 plus minutes.

I back Justin fully about Harden. Yes, Harden has started a bit poorly, but who besides Westbrook hasnt? Anyone who is against Harden playing starter minutes I believe lacks logical imagination. As of right now, he is not the defender Thabo is. Even if he were to start and play 25+ minutes a game, he may never become the defender Sef is, but he can close that gap but only through adequate playing time. HE comes in for scrap minuets and puts up the same numbers as Thabo and you want to trade him. Harden, if given the, will add an offensive dimension to our team that we sorely need. Harden is not a terrible defender but he will improve, while Thabo has had all the time in the world to improve his offense. UNfortunately, he has hit his offensive ceiling and every opponent knows it. How fortunate must it before for our opponents defensive strategies to have basically not have to account for him what soever, and just develop traps for KD? Put Harden in there, and and watch our offense become far more complex and productive. He has not hit his defensive ceiling. Thabo should be utilized against the better Sgs in the league, but Harden too. He merits and needs minutes. He is one of the more unique players in teh league and we MUST play him in order for him to mature and get comfortable with his strengths.

Also, Roy says he thinks Durant got a part of that ball on his last shot in regulation. That would have been 4 blocks. Although, KD looks like he bit on that play, putting him on the shooters late in games, see Kobe in last years playoffs, has turned about to be a good decision

TexasThunderfan

Forget Green, just get Nenad out of the starting lineup and put in Ibaka. When Collison comes back have the argument about Green v Ibaka. Brooks needs to quit being so loyal and realize how much we need Ibaka in the game. Offenses completely change their gameplan when he comes in. Also, there are valuable 6th men. As a Mavs fan before I was a Thunder fan, I can tell you that the Mavs will keep Jason Terry until he retires, and he has made a career as a sixth man and almost refuses to start at this point. So J-Green could come off the bench and still be "valuable" and vital to the organization.

& green going to the bench would put far more pressure on durant to score ... i already think there's too much pressure on him to score - fortunately he's a great (understatement) scorer ...

i dont think jg to the bench is the answer, not with this roster

i wasnt just takin about jg ... ibaka does it .. nenad does it ..

i honestly think that because cole is so big that he would rarely get beat like that ...

& then you have to add in the lack of blocking out ... i dont think cole would have as much of a problem with that either

the cole is a young player he shouldnt play x amount of minutes excuse is lame to me ... the whole team is young players & they ALL make a TON of mistakes ... put the best players on the floor .. that simple ... i am of the belief that the defense would be far more cohesive & consistent with nenad OFF the floor ... be it for ibaka or cole or both (of course more serge than cole)

i dont think cole can make any more mistakes than the big guys in the paint are making ... missed block outs, overplaying the post leading to easy spin/lob/alleyoops, not putting people on they keyster when they penetrate ..

the reality is the team is up & down because its a gang of young guys & they make ALOT of mistakes ... their talent & effort often compensate for it .. but the amount of unforced errors & turnovers the thunder make is very high ...

they might as well let cole come in, because the other guys are doing it anyway .. & im beginning to think he can bring a stoutness that nenad doesnt

Yes, Yes, and there are just too many reasons to explain fully.

I was thinking about writing a column about it, but I feel its been hammered home so much that it would be overkill. The crux of it is he is too undersized and overmatched at the PF position defensively. If you look at a lot of defensive metrics, they really dislike Green. Offensively, I don't have a big problem with him, he's kind of inefficient, but its not prohibitive in my opinion. Also, offensively he has the skills to be good/great, which I find encouraging, but defensively I think the problem with his size (especially standing reach) is pretty hard to rectify.

I do feel he could be a pretty great SF in the NBA, and given the right situation I think he would compare favorably with someone around the danny granger level.

kfmsooner

If Jeff Green is a lifetime Thunder player, i will still be a Thunder fan. I like Jeff Green. I like watching him for the most part. I don't like that he is asked to guard the likes of LA for 35 mpg every night when he can not do it.

JG can back up KD. KD, hopefully, eventually, will be limited to 36 mpg. Nobody can average 42 mpg like Durant is doing right now. That's 12 mpg for a backup SF. Green can survive

agreed completely. probably shouldn't have put him in that sentence, since it seems to have given off the wrong connotation. I was more so referring to the success of the ibaka/ aldrich lineups back in the jazz game that weren't revisited. i can understand bringing him along slowly, so by playoff time we've got a serge ibaka rookie surprise volume 2 at center type impact. i just don't think our rotations make the most of all of the options we have.

Example: against Chicago, Jeff Green 0-6 from the field to start on all open jumpers, and getting pounded defensively. We leave him in. Hornets similar situation last game for them. Ariza and West sucking it up. Instead of playing them through it, Williams answers by pulling them and putting in the second unit, with Smith, the nobody off the bench, going off for 17 points and basically saving the day. I'd like to see minutes being allocated less by who you are or what your name is, and instead being given based on the situation, what you bring to the table in that situation, and what your performance is at the moment. Less sticking to the game plan no matter what, more read and react.

i think the biggest dilemma facing the thunder is nenad ... he seems to clearly be a step slower & its hurting the post defense & rebounding - which was already one of the biggest weaknesses of okc ...

& have they learned anything from losing to the lakers!?.. i swear i counted at least 5 O-boards for portland in the 4th qtr last nite ...

i think its time the depth chart read serge-cole-nenad as far as the paint
