A dismal first half dooms the Thunder, Suns win 113-110

BOX SCORE

At some point, bad basketball just catches up to you.

The Thunder played a dismal offensive first half, shooting under 28 percent but hung in the game behind a strong effort at the free throw line. They battled back from 13 down in the third quarter to take a three-point lead going into the fourth, but there was just a feeling about this game. The kind where despite OKC clawing back into the game, it felt like the Suns still had things in hand.

It was like the Thunder was scrambling to figure things out all night. Kevin Durant did a nice little takeover job in the fourth quarter, hitting a number of jumpers to keep Oklahoma City close, but there were just too many costly defensive lapses and bad turnovers to overcome. For instance, with a little over a minute left after getting a big stop and trailing by three, instead of going back to an offensive set, Durant brought the ball up the floor for what I presume was going to be an isolation on Josh Childress.

Durant, who tends to have some issues in isolation with a defender picking and swiping at the ball, lost it to Childress. The Suns ended up capitalizing and went up five with 45 seconds left. That was a tough margin for the Thunder to work with at that point and they couldn’t ever get it tied.

Another curious decision that has to be looked at since it didn’t work, was going small down the stretch. The Suns did as well, but Nick Collison was playing pretty exceptional on the interior. Instead, Scott Brooks inserted James Harden and went with Westbrook, Harden, Thabo, Green and Durant. Robin Lopez was out of the game and Channing Frye was playing center for Phoenix, so it wasn’t like the Suns had a huge advantage, but Brooks clearly went for offense over defense. I say it didn’t work because the Thunder lost, plus there just weren’t enough stops. The offense did click well down the stretch scoring on a lot of possessions, but it’s at least something that was a little odd.

Jeff Green did have a halfcourt launch to send the game to overtime, but unlike the second $20,000 winner in a little over a week, his attempt clanged off the iron. A good effort, but like the Thunder, a little short.

NOTES:

  • The first half, Durant and Westbrook went a combined 3-18. They went 10-18 in the second. A nice turnaround, but too little too late.
  • Serge Ibaka was a COMPLETE non-factor. Just 11 minutes played with no points, rebounds, blocks, assists or steals. It was a matchup thing as Lopez was working him inside, plus Nick Collison was playing really well.
  • Jeff Green and Thabo Sefolosha really keyed the third quarter run with both hitting a couple 3s after Phoenix went to a zone. Without their spark, OKC would’ve trailed by at least 10 heading to the fourth.
  • Speaking of the third quarter spark: OKC outscored Phoenix 15-4 to end the quarter, held them without a field goal for the last 3:23 and the Suns last seven possessions consisted of five turnovers and two misses. WHERE WAS THAT ALL NIGHT?
  • Westbrook played a pretty nice game in the end, despite his shot not going down. 19 points and nine assists against three turnovers is okay by me.
  • I’ve got to question the on-the-floor call with about 10 seconds left. With the Thunder down three, the Suns fouled on purpose, but Westbrook anticipated it and went into a halfcourt shot on the foul. The officials inexplicably called it on the floor, which meant Westbrook was awarded two shots instead of three. Instead of a tie game, OKC still trailed by one. With the way continuation is called, I just don’t understand how that wasn’t on the shot.
  • Grant Hill thought it was 1997 tonight. 30 points and 11 rebounds for the 38-year-old.
  • Collison, as mentioned, was terrific. A season-high 19 points, plus eight rebounds.
  • Again, as mentioned, another Thunder fan hit a halfcourt shot to win $20,000. I bet MidFirst Bank is kind of like, “OK, heh heh, let’s stop that now.”
  • And almost just like the night Robert Yanders hit his, Eric Maynor swishes a deep 3 at the buzzer to end the third. This time, it was just after the horn. A bad omen, I suppose.
  • Any time Steve Nash shoots, I have no doubt it’s going in.
  • Westbrook missed another fast break dunk. That’s getting really annoying now.
  • James Harden 11 points by going 9-9 from the line. The team though, missed eight free throws. A big difference in the game tonight. (However, the Thunder did make 38 free throws, which is why they were in it anyway.)
  • I just want to say Kelly Crull does a really nice job as a sideline reporter for the TV broadcasts. It sucks too, because FS Oklahoma isn’t going to be able to hang on to her much longer. Somebody is going to come and hire her for something big at some point.

The Thunder really had a golden opportunity to go 4-0 on the homestand, especially with a weakened Suns team coming in. But it was like OKC took things for granted from the beginning. The Thunder fell behind 7-0 in the first minute and didn’t seem ready for a Suns team that was ready to play. It seemed as if the Thunder expected the Suns to roll over and give them the game. OKC just simply wasn’t ready. The first half showcased it with the Thunder shooting under 28 percent while also missing a handful of free throws again. They nearly made up for it with some urgency in the third quarter, but the Thunder should’ve been working with a lead for most of the game instead of scratching back from behind.

That ends a five-game win streak, so it’s a little hard to get that huffy and puffy when your team has played well over the past week or so. But this is a bad loss because it should’ve been a gift win. Huge credit to the Suns though for not just laying down on the doorstep. They outplayed the Thunder and definitely outworked them.

Next up: At the Bobcats Tuesday.

@Jermaine
Not while he is playing backup. Brooks maybe trying to keep him under wraps to try and keep him for at least the rest of the season. Even with 8-12 minutes teams wanted to get him. Anybody whos played basketball knows that 12 minutes is nothing. But he is able to impress teams. Plus we got the Westbrook lovers. The delusionals.

Well I was going to go to this game but backed out at the last second. But I am actually going to the Thunder/Suns game IN Phoenix. I've always wanted to go to a game in Phoenix and am finally getting the chance. Should be fun and I'll be about 25 rows up from the floor nearly center court. ^_^

More then just one game. And then take Ibaka and Collison out in the final seconds............Happens often, not learning from the past. Continue making the same mistakes. You can kiss a win against the bobcats goodbye if they continue the same play!

I'm pretty much done thinking about last night's game too, but have to comment on one part of last night's game. Right at the beginning, Westbrook was trying to catch up/guard/get near Nash. Nash was literally running around his players at their end and Westbrook was following him weaving in and out of the players. It cracked me up and looked like a game of tag, except W. was not even close to catching him. Looked at hubby and said, "Nash is injured and an "old man" and he can't catch him?-- not a good sign of things to come"

Actually, Scott sat Ibaka for most of the game precisely because he was playing bad and because Nick was on fire. He does tend to overlook these flaws in the starters more (with the exception of Krstic), but he's gotten better this year at pulling someone when they're not doing well. He's still not great at it, but he's getting better.

One game. Move on and beat the Bobcats, I say. I'm done thinking about this one.

And stop keeping players on the court when they play like garbage until the 4th. Its kinda backwards. You keep the garbage playing players on the court and take out green when he was hitting his shots. And Sef was on fire. Get him the freakin ball

Memo to Scott Brooks, Can you please let Eric Maynor play his game out there? If I have to sit through another Thunder game while Durant and Harden want to play PG while Westbrook is out I am going to go crazy. Durant and Harden, Maynor is the backup PG let him bring the ball up court and run the offense while Westbrook is out. Brooks take the training wheels off of Maynor and let the guy play. Maynor has NO freedom out there. The game Friday night vs the Kings was probably the first time in a couple of games where Maynor was just able to play. If Brooks is going to restrict Maynor he might as let Harden or Durant play PG when Westbrook is out since they do it anyway. Free Eric Maynor!!!!!!

ahh and something else. I got my hopes up when i saw cole in a uniform (why, i don't know). I've thought from watching on TV that he looks like the tin man, ready to fall apart at any moment, but surprisingly I saw him do some semi athletic moves. He isn't as athletic as Mullens for the size...but nothing close to Krstic.

FREE COLE!

The small ball lineups kill me. Ibaka playing 11 minutes is ridiculous. What happened to Nick and Serge playing together? That lineup is very effective. And how many times did we foul Hill late in the shot clock on a jumpshot?

I don't think we should necessarily trade anyone of fire Scott specifically because of this loss. I just thought there was some dumb coaching at the end of the game with the players Scott played at the end and I hope Scott thinks about it upon review. Also, I'd like Scott to acknowledge these mistakes in one of those post game press conferences. It seems like he's quick to say 'we played bad defense' but not that quick to say 'I had the wrong personnel in.'

No Vince Carter, no Pietrus, no Gortat, no J-Rich, no Turkoglu, no Clark. Doesn't matter. Only the Thunder can make 69-year-old Steve Nash and 72-year-old Grant Hill look like their in their mother-f'in primes.

The Suns from the OPENING TIP were energized and ready and took it right to us. As usual, we came out lackidasical and cocky and fell behind early and as usual, just assumed we could turn it on and come back. Only this time, what should have been a depleted Suns team actually had what it took to keep us at bay and eventually pull away at the end.

Do we have to switch on EVERY DAMN SCREEN??? What a brilliant idea by our "Coach of the Year" to allow our point guard to try and body up a man who's a damn half foot taller than him. That worked out well. Keep shining up that trophy Scotty.

Does KD have to take every jump shot he gets coming off a screen. I mean the guy sometimes isn't even facing the basket when he launches. No wonder his FG percentages are so low.

It's pretty clear we still need a big man. When Nick Collison is our most effective big man and getting the call against the likes of Robin Lopez, that's a problem. I'm not sure what Presti can do at the deadline, and he'll probably do nothing, but man, we BADLY need a big man who can defend and rebound. Would Krstic have made a difference in this game? I don't know.

Oh and can we please NEVER play on Sunday night at home on NBA TV again? I don't think we've won in that scenario so far this season.

What a disappointing and extremely frustrating loss.

@Dylan
I agree and, like I said earlier, I haven't lost sight of the fact that the team as a whole has developed beautifully. But I don't think that means we as a fanbase should turn a blind eye to blatant flaws in how the team is coached or constructed. Brooks is still a young coach and I think we often lose sight of the fact that he can develop in the same way young players develop. But I believe it's healthy to continue to note - and be frustrated by - the mistakes he makes. Being complacent with mistakes, whether by the coaches, players, or organization, doesn't make sense to me when you are striving for greatness.

the difference is, none of this is true and no one is saying it. But the "team is 19-9" is legit.

there are plenty of things to be worried about, but each loss brings out these hilarious histrionics. OH NO, WE LOST TO A TEAM THAT WAS SHORTHANDED.

NEWSFLASH: This team, best-case scenario this year, is a contender only to be better than last year. Guess what, so far we are. Did any of you think that we were finals bound? take a breath.

"So everything is great?"

well, disputing that everything is terrible because we lost a game is not quite the same as saying that everything is great -- I mean, there is a middle ground between "terrible" and "great"

"we lost to a team that was short handed, that is not good"
I'm sure Boston fans felt that way too, about a month ago

"This one game could be the difference between homecourt and not"
good grief, it's a little early to say this -- there's a lot of games left in the season and I doubt we're the only team that will eff up and drop games that they shouldn't (just as we'll probably win a few that we really shouldn't as well)

KD played better than his average performance against Suns last season. But he missed many shots tonight. If he can shoot near the basket like he did in the last 5 minutes, maybe we can win this game.
KD had 4 Asts this game.He passed ball to our big men and gave them chance to made easy layup.I like it and I hope he can improve his Ast to 4
And it is so surprised that Uncle Grant can play better than KD.

You know, by this time last year, Brooks had already set his rotation for the rest of the season. Westbrook-Thabo-Durant-Green-Krstic w/ Maynor-Harden-Ibaka-Collison coming off the bench.

Maybe we'll get to see Cole play next season. Better luck next year!

So everything is great? we lost to a team that was short handed, that is not good.

This one game could be the difference between homecourt and not, last year one more win and we would have avoided the lakers in the first rd would have gotten us 6th seed against the suns. It could happen this year, that lose could cost us the division later on.

If you evaluate a team's regular season performance by any measures other than wins and losses, you aren't really a true fan. Ergo, your opinions aren't really welcome on a fan blog. You should expect derision, and, if you don't like it, you should look elsewhere. Amirite?

I'm still higher on the team now than at any other time since the mid nineties. I'm still very upset at this loss because of gross failings by both the players and (most of all) the coaching staff. I don't think it's at all a contradiction or ridiculous to hold both positions simultaneously.

Yeah, I've heard for half court shots, hole-in-ones, etc. they usually get insurance so they don't go bankrupt doing payouts (more-likely for the million dollar hole in ones).

On another note. I've really liked Grant Hill his whole career. But watching him tonight, I have no idea why. If they actually gave technical fouls for complaining about calls, Hill would have gotten around 30 tech's tonight. The guy whines more than the entire Spurs team combined. He had SO much to complain about too, since of the 87 fouls he committed in the game, he was actually called for 5 of them. I don't understand why defenders are allowed to bear hug Durant, and grope him more than the TSA does at the airport. Last time I checked, holding a guy when he's trying to run around is a foul.

Basically, most frustrating Thunder game of the year for me. We played awful, refs were awful, etc. etc. No silver lining (except for the half court shot guy)

fortunately, we didn't really slip, despite Utah winning last night

Although our record ties the Jazz at 19-9, we hold on the the #1 spot in the Northwest and #4 in the West. That takes a little bit of the sting out.

Some road games will probably do us some good. We seem to have better focus away from home.

well, I won't begrudge Phoenix this win -- they simply out-played us

two geezers -- Nash (36) and Hill (38) -- schooled our young-uns in the art of cool execution

I'm not sure what to think about Brooks. I know he isn't going anywhere soon considering he won coach of the year. That being said, the obvious mistake of having green and thabo in the lane does not make any sense. Part of me really wants Brooks to try a larger line up. Say... Nenad (with nick coming very soon off the bench) and Serge starting along side KD, Thabo and RW and then staggering the bench players with JG coming off for KD and part-time PF position, and trying a big line up with with Cole coming in as C and shifting Nick to PF for a few minutes, while Serge takes a breather. I don't know if this will work, sometimes it seems like we're too small when we need to be bigger and grab boards, and other times not being small/quick enough. But along with rebounding and size in the post, we need someone who can work offensively with their back to the basket and someone who has skill enough to draw something resembling a double team. We need an inside threat to make defense honest.

Thomas

On Mid-first paying out two of these half court shot contests now, I had heard a while back that oftentimes companies can purchase an insurance policy for these types of contests and hole in one contests and the like. I have no idea if Mid-First has done so in this case or for that matter how something like this would be underwritten but it would seem plausible given the potential exposure even for large company such as Mid-First.

You know its sort of funny, Presti (according to Steven Kerr on Simmons' podcast) says how we aren't ready we aren't ready this team still needs to develop before they can be serious contenders and yet they won't take the time to play a guy like Cole. He isn't going to get much better sitting on the bench. If we are still a year or two away then let's give him some time and see what happens. If it costs us a game here and there so be it.

Brooks needs to go. There has to be high school coaches out there who could do a better job. Hell, PJ would have known to put at least 1 big on the floor down the stretch to rebound. Never thought I'd miss Carlissimo, but there it is. Brooks has turned into a bad joke.
