OKC flips the script and slips past the Kings 99-97

BOX SCORE

We were all bracing for the worst as the Kings closed down Oklahoma City’s 11-point third quarter lead to just three heading into the fourth. It was the Memphis game all over again.

But the Thunder bench (plus Jeff Green) wasn’t going to let that happen. OKC’s stellar second unit started the fourth on a 12-2 run, pushing the Thunder’s lead out to a comfortable double-digit lead.

Then we were all bracing again as the Thunder let that lead slip to just two. Kevin Durant missed two free throws with the Thunder leading by two, 99-97, and gave the Kings an opportunity to win or tie with five seconds left. Tyreke Evans went for the gold launching a 3, but came up short.

While KD probably won’t sleep tonight as he replays those two free throws over in his head time and again, he was fantastic in closing this one. He scored OKC’s last 14 points, hitting signature jumpers off curls, pull-ups and the dribble. Every time the Kings tried to close in on the Thunder, Durant would knock in another jumper. He started the third quarter 0-5 and looked to be on his way to a rough finish, but he got himself going again with two solid finishes at the rim to close the third and carried that over to the big fourth. He finished with 35 on 13-22 shooting, but of course he’s not happy about the five misses at the stripe.

The Kings helped the Thunder a good amount, turning it over 18 times. To start the fourth, Sacramento had only two field goal attempts in the first six minutes. They turned it over four times and because of that, OKC stretched out to a double-digit lead. Really, the Kings played the part of Tuesday’s Thunder in this one. Sacramento outrebounded OKC 49-36, shot a solid 45 percent and played good enough defense. But turnovers and missed free throws ended up costing them.

After the solid start to the fourth quarter, the finish certainly leaves a bitter aftertaste, but the Kings aren’t a team that goes quietly. And OKC did just enough. Remember, this game could’ve ended with that Tyreke 3 dropping through the net and we’d be feeling like we did after the Memphis game. Instead, it’s a Thunder road win and despite there being some eyesores in the box score, it obviously feels better than the alternative.

NOTES:

  • The most interesting thing from this game is that Eric Maynor saw the final three crunch time minutes over Russell Westbrook. It’s not like Russ was playing bad though. He had 22 points on 8-16 shooting, seven assists, five rebounds and only three turnovers. Scott Brooks said after the game: “I have a confidence in [the bench]. That’s why at the very end of the game, I thought Eric was playing really good and I put him back in.”
  • OKC’s starters: -8, -13, -9, -10, -4. OKC’s bench: +21, +6, +2, +12, +13. The +21 is from Nick Collison. What a classic Collison line. He was 0-0 from the floor, had zero points and just two rebounds, but was a +21. I love that guy.
  • The Thunder had just 12 assists in the game. That’s pretty ugly.
  • OKC missed nine free throws and went just 2-13 from 3. And those two 3s? One was a Maynor halfcourter at the end of the first quarter and the other a bank from Durant after the rip move. Not a great shooting night.
  • What the crap was wrong with the officiating crew tonight? The Thunder was hit with three technical fouls in this one. Westbrook got one for complaining after a carrying call, Ibaka was hit for an inadvertent bump on Cousins and Maynor got hit for saying something. It’s odd because this team is one of the least T’d teams in the league. Westbrook absolutely deserved his, but Ibaka and Maynor’s were certainly questionable.
  • That said, OKC definitely got the good end of the whistle other than the techs. It felt like the Thunder were getting some gifts.
  • Scott Brooks went with James Harden over Thabo for most of the fourth. I loved the move. Harden checked Evans for most the night and despite Evans having 30, Harden did a pretty solid job. Plus with Harden on the floor, OKC had an extra offensive option which just helps clear space for KD running off those screens. Harden had just 11 on 3-9 shooting, but did pick up five steals.
  • OKC is 15-3 after a loss. And 10-1 on the road with a lead going into the fourth.
  • Jeff Green with another stinker. He had just eight points on 4-10 shooting and four rebounds. And I can’t really find much to say he did well. His defense was mostly unnoticeable, he didn’t make any big plays to speak of and just kind of drifted.
  • Jeff Green has only two offensive rebounds in the month of February.
  • KD’s facial expressions at the end of the game were weird. It was like he was in shock with what happened. He couldn’t believe he missed those two free throws.
  • Was it just me or did Nenad Krstic appear to have a little extra burst tonight? He had two dunks, but I noticed it when he made a post move on cutting across the paint for a hook shot. He missed it, but looked good doing it.
  • Tyreke Evans played 46 minutes in this one. That’s a bunch of minutes for a guy battling foot issues.
  • Tonight’s “Did Brian Davis really say that: “He’s just scootin’ and tootin’ his way to the hole!” (Answer: No he didn’t. A pretty tame night for Davis, but you can picture him saying that, can’t you?)

Next up: At the Warriors Sunday.

Looked it up, Harden is shooting 367 from the 3. Really, you're half way right, that's not a bad percentage.

So here's the bet. I say Harden shoots under 367 for the rest of the season from the 3 and you take the over. The winner gets to say he/she is right. Take the bet?

You know, I've said for a while that I don't care where Harden's minutes come from, but I have to pull back on that. Our starting five is so poor, I think you need the best guys on the floor. Imagine how much easier games would be if they weren't always having to fight back from an early deficit?

Did anyone else notice how there is something about the lighting on the court at Arco Arena that makes our unis really pop? I thought the blue looked really good last night.

@Cpt.

If it is because Jeff is playing out of position, I won't disagree. I think that reasoning is a legit comment. It makes sense that he would have more value at SF to a team that needs a starting SF than to us since we have KD. That isn't what I hear sometimes though.

On you Thabo comment... I like they guy, think he tries hard, and was a big part of our defensive turnaround as soon as we got him late in the 2008-2009 season. However, it appears he us never going to learn the "Bowen 3". With Harden's improvement, he is losing value. That said, he is a solid player with an amazingly team friendly salary. I don't see him being moved anywhere soon, except to the bench more minutes. I like the split of minutes at the SG position I have been seeing recently (not based on fact, but my guess based on observations). Thabo 15, harden 25, with Maynor (small ball), KD (big ball), and Cook splitting the final 8. I could care less who starts as long as these minutes are doled out.

@lilrip133
I think Ibaka is athletic...not physical. We need someone who is more of a "chunk" at PF. Not these guys specifically, but more of a Boozler/Kenyon Martin type. I think D.J. White might be our guy, but what do I know? Go back and look at the recent NBA champions. You have to search a few years to find one that had a truly dominant center. Frankly, I think that, if you don't have Dwight Howard, you're just as well off with any of the centers below him OR a combination of decent centers.

lilrip133
lilrip133 5pts

@TaoMaas
gotta disagree there. We have a physical 4 in Ibaka already. Collison is too small to defend the center position, although he's an incredible positional defender. We still need a quality shot blocking, rebounding center. Having said center would allow the rest of our positions to align better and not have so many guys playing out of position.

Cpt. C-note :@BradleyI think it’s b/c Green is a starter at the 4, but he is more suited to play the 3. On this Thunder team, we have a PF that doesn’t rebound and can’t really defend other 4′s. I don’t think he sucks…just needs to be our 6-man. Thabo I could do without at this point(I see no need for a SG that can’t shoot and his D is not what it was last year) and Nenads is not our answer at starting center, IMO.

I agree with all of this except the part about Nenad not being our answer at center. I think Green and Thabo both need to become a part of our second team. Whereas, they're both a half-step below most teams' starting five, I think they'll be a full-step above any team's second unit. Nenad or Collison would be fine at center if we had a more forceful PF. On this board, I think we tend to concentrate too much on the center position. I think we're okay at center, but need a more physical PF who can help in rebounding and protecting the middle.

Why do I see commentors on this site say something like this so frequently "Green sucks, we should trade him for something awesome". Really, you could insert Thabo, Kristic or any other player here too. Of course i paraphrased and oversimplified, but essentially that's what I hear. I see it all the time and I just don't understand the logic. If the player really sucks so badly (like you say he does), why would any team want to trade for him? Even more so, why would that team, give up the assets that you desire for that player that sucks so badly. Just in this blog I saw Justin and Daniel say something like this. I don't get it.

Why is it that every time we have a 10-12 point lead with 2-3 minutes left, we just stop playing? Then the other team makes a big run and all of a sudden, we're a buzzer-beater away from losing. I think we depend too much on our "good" free-throw shooting at the end of games. We need to learn how to stomp on a team when they're down. We would all be screaming bloody murder had that Evans 3 gone down, which it almost did.

Big ups to Nick Collison for boxing out Cousins on that final play. I'm having flashbacks of Pau Gasol and Mike Miller and I'm glad it didn't happen to us this time.

I thought my eyes were deceiving me, but Jeff Green grabbed three straight rebounds to start the 3rd quarter. He also hit a jumper and a reverse lay-up in that stretch. He contributed next to nothing the rest of the game though. I guess he's back in his "slump," though we all know he's just back to being the real Jeff Green.

Harden didn't shoot the ball that well but I was happy with his offensive aggression and the defense. At least when he shoots it, I mostly expect it to go in, unlike Green. Don't forget Harden's 5 steals as well, including a great sequence where he cleanly stripped Evans in the open court, gave it up to Westbrook, then got it back for the easy lay-in. That was a thing of beauty.

I did like how Brooks tried to change things up to start the 2nd quarter. Instead of giving Green his usual minutes to start the quarter, he put in Daequan. Cook didn't contribute anything, but at least the idea was there to reduce Green's minutes. *applause for Brooks*

Thabo is pretty much completely useless. Can we trade Green + Thabo + expiring contract + (maybe a 1st round pick) for something? Surely we must be able to get SOMETHING, ANYTHING, for that package. Trade deadline is less than 2 weeks away now!

Maynor is looking to score more. I like. The substitution to put him in at the end of the game was actually a good idea I thought, since he was playing so well and he's so much more under control than Russ. But I think it backfired because the offense just got really stagnant. It seemed like even our own players were confused as to why Maynor was out there. I don't think Brooks will do that again, but it was an interesting experiment.

If we're lucky, the Kings will have suspended Cousins when we play them again next week.

I'm a little worried about this Golden State game. Seems like Monta Ellis always lights us up. Hopefully Russ can slow Curry and our bigs can outplay David Lee and Biedrens. Dorell Wright has been playing well this year and could be an X-Factor. Plus it's tough to win in that building. Hopefully we take care of business on national TV. We usually play well when we're on ESPN. Go Thunder!

Cousins had confrontation with D. Greene regarding the decision on the last play in locker room and has to be separated, the source says.

Tyreke Evans missed a three-pointer in the final seconds in a loss to OKC. Seems clear Cousins thought he was open.

Cousins has grown frustrated that the Kings coaches and players don’t speak up more about Evans’ late-game decision making.
