Was Thursday the end of the Thunder U mentality?

by Michael Kimball on February 25, 2011 at 1:00 pm 97 Comments

AP Photo

OK, probably not. But it could feel that way for at least a few days. And what is sports media if not a place for quick reactions and overreactions? Hear me out, though. I think there’s at least a chance that Thursday’s trade of Jeff Green could end up killing off a little of Oklahoma City’s family-oriented, Thunder U mentality.

I don’t pretend to know what Kevin Durant or Russell Westbrook or anyone else thinks. But I’m pretty sure I know how I would react in this situation if I was in my early 20s.

I’d roll my eyes, at least for awhile, whenever Sam Presti or Scott Brooks or anyone else mentioned how the team is a “family” that grows together. “Well I guess Jeff wasn’t a part of the family then, huh? I guess we only grow together until you trade one of us away, huh?”

We got an inkling into how some members of the team are feeling with some tweets Thursday by a few of the players. At least for now, it seems like they’re taking it pretty hard. And I know that’s how I would have felt too if one of my good friends at that age was taken away from me under circumstances beyond my control, and especially if those circumstances were under the control of an authority figure whom I trusted.

It’s a hard comparison to make, sure, because it’s not like any of my college friends could have been traded away. Those that left did so under circumstances that they did or could have controlled, like transferring or not making the grades or something like that. But still. Your teens and early 20s are when you make the strongest bonds of friendship in your life. And Durant and Green were rookies together and had spent their entire professional lives together on Thursday, with Westbrook coming just a year later. James Harden, Eric Maynor, Serge Ibaka and others seemed to slide right into the group and become fast friends. Durant calls his teammates his Thunder brothers for a reason.

Without a doubt, for all of them Thursday was the biggest "this is a business" shock of their young professional lives. Sure, they were close with guys like Kyle Weaver, but ultimately they know what could and does happen to guys at the end of the roster. But I suspect that even though they all also know that nearly everyone is subject to a trade like what went down Thursday, few really thought Green would get traded, especially when nothing had gone down until that close to the deadline.

Without a doubt, for all of them Thursday was the biggest “this is a business” shock of their young professional lives. Just like most Thunder fans thought that if Green left at all, he was most likely to do so of his own volition as a free agent at the end of the year, the players might have been just as inclined to think so as well.

So the worry for Thunder fans, even though Durant is locked up for the foreseeable future and Westbrook will probably follow suit this summer, is that Thursday could be a big step in a process that we see happening to many athletes across the country but had hoped it was something to which they were immune: the way so many pro athletes become jaded and scarred by the business as time goes on. If the Thunder doesn’t somehow rise to championship contention over the life of their contracts, could the team’s biggest stars use this moment among other factors as justification for leaving someday? “I used to think I owed it to this team and this town to stay here for the long haul and fight for the championship. But where was the loyalty when they traded my friend? Maybe the grass is greener elsewhere.”

It’s dangerous to assume what someone else is thinking, especially when you don’t have the chance to really pick their brain. But again, I just know what I would be thinking if I were their age and in their shoes. And one thing I know for sure, having gone through tough times at that age and at others, like most folks, is that painful memories do get less painful as time passes. They’ll feel better next week than they do this week.

And, of course, a couple of playoff round victories could make a lot of people feel a lot better. Like maybe Kendrick Perkins, who was a little upset at being traded himself. Winning cures just about everything in sports. If the Thunder, as now constituted, can make some serious noise in the playoffs this year, maybe Perkins sticks around and this team could make a real run at things. And maybe KD, Westbrook and the gang feel a lot better about the situation. Maybe Thunder U would be here to stay after all.

Keep in mind though that, while a D-league player makes $25,000 a season playing in the league...they make that for a November to March season, leaving them the opportunity to play overseas for another 100K or so (or more). So...they do alright...

Durant at PF? He has played about 300 minutes there during the last 2 seasons. Some of the PF numbers are a lot better now than last season- eFG%, FTAs, assists. Some numbers are worse- rebounding, fouls, blocks, shot defense. Overall he wins the match-up big, bigger than he does at SF. Team win% was mildly better at SF last season than PF but it is even this season.

I wouldn't over do it but he could probably move up from 2 minutes per game at PF on average to 5 without impact. 10 minutes there, you'd have to try it for awhile to find out what happens.

@anonymous
Yes, 25K starting salary in the D-league. On the other hand, a guy like Latavious Williams could be in college playing for free tuition and meals.

The D-league, especially a team like Tulsa, is probably the highest level of training for the NBA, and it's probably the best possible route for getting into the NBA outside of the draft. A minimum contract with the NBA for just a few years makes the underpaid D-league service worth it.

One of the biggest knocks on Green is that he doesn't give full effort.

f5alcon :@james1he started green and most of greens games have been really bad

No the effort has always been there with Green. He always gives 100%. He just doesn't shoot well and can't defend good 4's. Ibaka's bad games he goes in a shell. Like the Miami game. Brooks saw he was spacing out and didn't even play him in the 2nd half.

f5alcon :brooks said ibaka might not be full time starter at PF and durant might start there.”Worth noting that Brooks didn’t commit to Ibaka as the full-time starter. When asked, Brooks said, “We’ll see.”
Brooks might be being coy but he sounded like he’d be open to Durant actually starting at power forward in certain situations.
Brooks: “We have flexibility. Kevin can play 4, which he played and played very well last game against San Antonio.”

Everyone has games where they play better than others but Ibaka's bad games have been really bad. Brooks has been challenging him to be more consistent and I'm sure this is part of that. I think it's a good idea.

yeah against smaller teams durant can play PF, but not against any elite team. gasol, duncan, dirk, even aldridge, garnett, boozer, bosh would push him around. maybe if he gained another 30 lbs.

Yeah, I think situationally he can play the 2-4, but that does not mean he should be playing there the majority of the time.

That is what I am afraid of with brooks. For the first time we have people at every positon that can play that position naturally. We don't need to (except situationally) play people out of positon anymore. This is what is so great about this trade and somehow immedately Brooks starts talking about Kevin at the 4. WTF

Winning cures everything. If the Thunder win games, the emotion of losing a player you like will fade away. When the Sonics traded Gary Payton, there was a lot of backlash. GP was fading a bit, and his bark was getting bigger than his bite. His attitude was stunting the growth of some of the young pieces. We got an All Star in return, who was younger and just as productive as GP. But it was still hard. The trade ended up being the correct decision, and now in retrospect looks like a no brainer. It'd be nice if Sam Presti could have built a Utopian team made up of his own draft picks, that stayed together forever. But that wasn't going to happen.

Well then you are farther than I am at the moment then... All I have is a blank Table of Contents page! I think the landscape of politics and policy is going to change so much by the time I run, that today's issues won't really matter because we'll be on to different ones. Probably the only issue I'll run on is trying to get a National Kevin Durant Day implemented for the day in June when he won his 8th consecutive championship.

I think the main reason why he isn't starting Harden is because if he does that, the bench will literally not be able to score anything at all.

I can't beleive that Brooks is not taking this opprotunity to start Harden. He is starting to get into Bob Hill area. He is not quite into Whestphal area yet but definantly getting into Bob Hill area.

Please start starting Harden. He is clearly the better player and starting would do wonders for his confidence (which is the one place he is lacking).

Mullens might not be so bad though... If he can pull Dwight out a little bit, it might help to open up the lane. I think B.J./Byron/No Value Stache/whatever you wanna call him might be extremely effective if/when he floats out around 15 to 18 feet from the basket. Our 3 ball is REALLY gonna have to be going for us to have a shot though...

Any help you may need just ask! If I can help, I will. I do have to say though, that I'm a bit (way) off on the local scene/contacts because I haven't lived in Oklahoma since I was 19. Getting that tax break this last Summer sure was nice though! :)

Thunder won't call up Latavious Williams or other draftees stashed at Tulsa because they don't want to waste a year of a cheap rookie contract. As soon as Latavious Williams gets signed to OKC the clock starts ticking towards his second contract and free agency. OKC would like to delay that as long as possible.

The Tulsa "farm team" strategy is predicated on having guys willing to work extremely cheaply at Tulsa ($25000 a year) for the potential of being signed to the big club in a few years.

I know its probably a foreground background issue, but wow Durant looks tall in that pick. It wouldnt surprise me at all if he had grown a lot since being in the league, I know i grew 2 inches from 20-22. Perk-Ibaka-Durant, HUGE front line.

Great arguement there with the broken leg thing... I'm just not the type of guy who acts like a papercut is a broken leg... just put a little bit of hand sanitizer on it, know it's gonna sting for a second and go about your day. And if she DID break her leg, say while riding a bike, the FIRST thing I would do when she got healed back up is to put her RIGHT back on it. Our boys just need to start playing basketball now... I understand your point, though.

My whole point here, and I'm not trying to say that it's not tough for them because I've been there, is that I don't want us, Our guys, Our representation to end up being like almost every "big market" organization. I WANT them to be emotional. I WANT them to play for each other. THAT'S my point. The name on the front of the "laundry" is supposed to mean more than the name on the back of it.

The questions are being asked to our guys and of course they're gonna be emotional. It's a dumb question to ask them. It's THAT type of questioning though that almost makes a break-up in production (due to lack of effort and commitment to the TEAM) because of a break-up of "our big 3" expected from some of the media. It's that expectation that is the next step to it being acceptable. The only thing I want is for the effort to not diminish because doing anything with a lack of effort is UNacceptable. I guess I'm just a tough love kind of guy...

Here’s a pipe dream for the ages. We resign Perk in the offseason. Then we hope that Greeb sucks hard for the Celtics this season. Then over the summer and early part of nest season we offer to trade pieces like Maynor/Nate (we don’t need both), Collison, Nazr (assuming Perk is healthy), and/or draft picks to try and get Green back.

Haha, yeah. Green as a Lamar Odom type sixth man? Eh? Eh?

One thing that I don't get is that Boston traded Perk because they thought they couldn't resign him. I think Green and Perk will cost about the same (7-9 mil/year), so how will Boston be able to resign Green and not Perkins? What am I missing?
