Durant hopes to be ready to go Friday against Atlanta

by Royce Young on March 2, 2011 at 10:52 pm 74 Comments

Kevin Durant sprained his left ankle in the third quarter against the Pacers, stepping on Tyler Hansbrough’s foot. Durant stayed in the game to sink two free throws, but immediately exited, eventually needing help from a couple trainers to get to the locker room.

While the injury looked kind of serious, Durant didn’t seem to be all that worried post-game.

“Just a little tweak,” KD told reporters after the game. “I did it before. Just gotta see how I feel in the morning.”

Durant left the arena wearing a protective boot, but that was just deemed a precaution. He said he thinks he could be available to play against the Hawks Friday in Atlanta.

“Hopefully, I’m ready to go,” he said.

Of course that’s how he felt about an hour after the game finished. We’ll see how things go when he wakes up Thursday morning.

@lafowler255

He must have been up all of last night worrying about KD.

maybe he's waiting to see if there is any more on durant's injury

Royce Young must be sleeping in its 11:30am and still no Bolts?!?! I think I might be spoiled... Must I go search for Thunder content myself?

Is there and way we can get a thundercats tree and leaf shirt? cause that would be all sorts of sick nasty

Also, I was wrong anyway. Looked back at ESPN play by play, KD started 3rd and played until injury

it was on a fast break so he could have been playing any position and still have had TH on him

Was KD playing the 4 when he got hurt? He came in when one picked up a foul, I think. Up to that point, Brooks had just alternated between Nazr, Collision, Ibaka, and Aldrich. One gets in foul trouble, put another in and keep pummeling them.

DJ R7 :
who else thinks Harden is raging with confidence in his overall game but lacks it in the 3pt shooting

3PT shooting can have high variance. The overall quality of his 3pt looks are poor, too. Kinda like Durant's. He shoots them off the dribble more than someone like Cook does.

DavyTheWise :@DJ R7i thought the rotations last night were encouraging, i just hope brooks down’t lock into nine guys again while we are sooo deep. Surely not. Davis and Long mentioned scott saying he liked his “kickout lineup” with the two jayhawks, maynor, cook, and harden. i would imagine perk will play with that lineup when he comes back as well…
I love how we have interchangeable parts now, to the point that we can put a guy in like Robinson for a couple of min and if he’s ticking then great, but if not, we have 4-5 guys who can also be plugged in. Same way down low. In my opionion we got more versatile with the trades, contrary to what some may think.

i agree we did become more flexible, but its brooks who worries me.

If I had to guess, based on absolutely nothing, i'd say he sits on friday as a precaution.

Yeah.

Good to keep in mind, though, that Durant didn't get hurt because Hansbrough was playing poorly. That play was just an accident, and wasn't anyone's fault.

I keep being more and more impressed by these guys, I wish i had the money and profile to be a part of something like this…

i agree, these guys truly are those type that say when they are young "if i became famous, or rich. I would give back". Im glad about the players we have. Sefo has a place in the Thunder, and if our coach knew how to play minutes and rotations he would be alot better.

I noticed the same thing. Eventually, he'll either learn to control himself or he'll pull something like that against the wrong person and they'll teach him.

There's a big difference between playing hard and playing dangerously.

No one knows how bad his ankle is except him... it could be bad but it might have just a little tweak. If he says he wants to play on Friday I would think its on the minor side, but wouldn't be suprised if he sat out 7 days to be careful. Really can't use any previous experiences with an ankle sprain because like someone said they can vary so much.

yeah at least it doesnt sound serious, at first i thought we would be scrwed if durant was out long term, but i think it would force harden to start and with our new found defense we might survive but it would be rough gritty games.

It was sort of eerie in the arena when Durant went down last night. After he committed a foul to get out of the game, the fans quieted down a little. Then the game resumed but you could tell that no one was watching the action on the court. Everyone was watching KD go straight to the locker room. In my section, the sentiment was "Oh, crap!"

It was more of a comparison. And if you think he is going to play Friday your crazy. At this point in the season there is no incentive to play him when he is any less than 100%.

DavyTheWise
DavyTheWise 5pts

I thought it was funny on one play when cook came down with the rebound over his head and hansborough (his name is even annoying to type) punched it out of his hands, over the baseline, into the stands. cook turned around and looked at him like "wtf man?"

Every ankle injury is different. It's not like a broken leg or a torn ACL. I've turned an ankle and got up and played or there are ankle sprains that are worse than brakes where you would be out months. They aren't comparable.

I really can't stand Hansborough. The whole game I kept turning to my girl and saying, "He's so annoying, he's always out of control and flailing around, he's going to get somebody hurt." And then he did. Thanks Psycho-T!!

Lol if you rolled your ankle one time and you think it makes you an expert, you must not have played much ball.. KD’s probably rolled that ankle 20 times in his life, the only person who knows how serious it is, is KD. So judging from his initial reaction, which was closer to “Annoyed that i did this in a blowout” than “ow this hurts,” I’d guess its not to serious. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him on friday, wouldn’t mind sitting him one game to be safe.

i agree, but aat the same time don't. He did that two years ago, and didn't play the same for the rest of the season. If he has rolled that ankle 20 times then he would have torn something by now so no he hasn't. Still though, i much rather him sit out the next 2-3 games just to be safe. I don't think he would play friday, a swollen ankle even with world class medical staff would take 2 or 3 days to go down and start feeling comfort. I wouldn't be surpise if they sit him against ATL, and PHO just so he doesn't stress it like he did two years ago

@steve.thunderfan

In his second season, Durant had a similar injury, played it off initially, but then missed some games. He came back and wasn't the same the rest of the year.

I'll wait for some news today after he's slept on it and gets looked at by the Thunder staff.

Of course he's gonna be back soon. Durant is the anti-Oden. Besides, rolling your ankle like that doesn't hurt as bad when you weigh 125 lbs.

DavyTheWise

I'm not a world class athlete with a training/medical staff protecting their assets, but i rolled my ankle like that once playing rec ball at OSU. my whole foot turned green purple and yellow, and it still clicks when i walk. Obviously this won't end his career or even his season, but i could see it being a two week thing pretty easily, we'll probably hear how he and the staff feel about it today and have a better idea. Haven't really gotten to playing since then 'cause it took months for me to even feel comfortable walking again. of course i was about 80lbs overweight from beer when it happened so that didn't help me much. lol.

Sure, there's reason to be skeptical about KD playing against Atlanta, but it is certainly very possible. That's a really common injury, and I've seen players return to the game after rolling it like that. It's one of those that often looks worse than it is in reality. If they hadn't been planning to sit KD out the rest of the game, anyway, who knows, he may have just walked it off for awhile and gone back into the game.

I'm not scared of Denver with their current team. When we've had trouble with Denver Billups has killed us, Anthony has killed us and they've beat us into submission inside. None of those will happen now.

Joshua G

They're more likely to be trying to pay us back for Westbrook's "triple double". Let's hope beating Chicago put them in a good mood so that they'll forget about being mad at us.

I want Serge to dunk on Josh Smith against Atlanta as a little payback for Smith's "I think he bit me" bullshit remark after our New Year's eve win. What kind of crap is that? That would be like saying of someone who grew up in a crime ridden area 'I think he stole my valuables on the way to the rim' or for someone who grew up in Appalachia 'I think he tried he tried to remake that scene from Deliverance he fouled me so hard.'

I like James Harden ha. he has been stepping it up as of late and i hope these good trends continue, im glad i didnt jump on the "shouldnt have drafted Harden at #3 wagon" cause hes been proven the haters wrong. Hes only 21 and its been hard for him to find a role with durant and russ but it appears he is turning the corner

Earlier today when discussing the pronunciation of Nazr, someone suggested we just call him Larry. With that in mind, it's a shame we don't still have Krstic. Then we could have Larry Mo and Curly on the team.
