Monday Bolts – 4.25.11

by Royce Young on April 25, 2011 at 9:10 am 98 Comments

John Hollinger of ESPN.com on OKC: “That future begins now, it seems. With the Thunder one step away from the second round of the playoffs, and a potential home-court advantage awaiting them should Memphis defeat San Antonio, it appears — youthful mistakes and all – these kids are ready for a deep playoff run. It may have been a day of fantastic finishes, but the really fantastic part here is that a group that was 3-29 a little over two years ago can realistically discuss making the conference finals.”

Andrew Feinstein of Denver Stiffs: “I fear that we’re witnessing the evolution of a great team before our very eyes and unfortunately it’s not the one that has “Nuggets” on the front of their jerseys. It seems as though our pesky, upstart, once lovable Nuggets are merely going to be the first victim as this Thunder squad rolls through the 2011 post-season eating up the competition in its wake. Looking at the Thunder objectively (as I believe we can now that we’re down 0-3), they have all the makings of a championship team. Two superstars? Check. Size? Check. Depth? Check. Good role players? Check. Role players who can make big shots? Check. Good coaching? Check. Ability to protect the rim? Check. In fact, if the Nuggets were to play the Thunder 100 times I think we’d lose about 85 of them.”

Are the Thunder the best in the West right now?

Roundball Mining Company after Game 3: “They protect the rim, they communicate to get back in transition and they do not hesitate to make a move or shoot when getting the ball in good position. More than anything they display a tremendous amount of hustle on the boards which is the sole reason the Thunder are winning regardless of how well they shoot from the field. Denver has been respectable in terms of allowing offensive rebounds and OKC has exposed them to the tune of 11.67 offensive boards per game.”

Darnell Mayberry: “Monday’s game should be a good test for the Thunder. The close-out game is notorious for being the toughest game in a series. It’ll be interesting to see how the Thunder responds. I originally picked the Thunder in 5 largely because I thought the Nuggets would be good enough to win at least one on their home court. But also because closing a series on an opponent’s home floor is no easy task. We’ll see just how good the Thunder is Monday. A side benefit to taking care of business Monday is two additional days of rest in addition to whatever amount the Thunder would already get before the second round. And it should be plenty. The Memphis-San Antonio series looks like it’s going 7.”

NBA Playbook with a great look at the final possession of Game 3.

Arron Afflalo doesn’t think the Thunder is better than the Nuggets: “I think they’re good,” Afflalo said. “They’re good. They’re a good basketball team, but do you reverse it and say we’re the best team if we make five more free throws and we win the game? Now we’re up 3-0. Now we’re so much better than them? No. They won the game. That’s just what it is. The object is to outscore your opponent and they’ve done that. Whether it’s by them being a better basketball team or by us making improvements, either way we just need to find a way to win.”

Pretty cool to see all the people that traveled to Denver.

How the World Championships benefited a bunch of players.

Chris Tomasson for NBA.com on Ibaka’s big night: “One might think Serge Ibaka grew up dreaming of having an NBA playoff game like the one he enjoyed Saturday night. Actually, the Oklahoma City forward never had even seen a playoff game on television until after he left his native Congo for Spain five years ago at the age of 16. “I can’t say when I was in Congo, no,” Ibaka said. “When I was young … I didn’t even know there was playoff.” Well, a lot more folks in the Congo might know about the NBA playoffs now than prior to Saturday. In Game 3 of a Western Conference first-round series at the Pepsi Center, Ibaka totaled 22 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks in Oklahoma City’s 97-94 win over Denver, which gave the Thunder a commanding 3-0 lead.”

Good post. I generally agree.

You said: "They allow Russ the freedom to be his wild self. I think there are lots of coaches who would balk so hard at his turnovers that they would reign him in so hard that he wouldn’t be effective."

I agree it looks good overall for that approach right now.

Could it have gone better, quicker? We don't have anything to compare it to.

Will that approach look as good at the end of the playoffs or in 1, 2, or 4 years from now? We will see. I guess that depends somewhat on what they do with him from here and most importantly what Russell responds to and does on his own from here.

The Denver Post had a writer who when interviewed on the radio used this phrase "since it's over now we can apply a little perspective". I think it was espn radio but not certain. Over all I think the feeling has been all Thunder since before game 1. For a 4/5 matchup they were never very positive about things, not the team, media or fan base. That pair of late season losses did most of it I think. The Denver Stiffs blog has pretty much been calling it done too in that same sort of collective assessment. By the way, you don't really expect an opponents blog to be as fair as that one is to us. It seems like a great blog.

It looks like the top three seeds will all be battered and bruised after the first round. If we get HCA all the way to the conference finals.... I don't think I need to say how good our chances would be against any team from the East.... HCA or not.

Well rest is always good but....Not seeing a Thunder game for about a week or so would KILL ME. I enjoy watching the other games but OKC is just so much more fun.

Memphis is no joke but we will have the HCA so I'd rather them go ahead and beat SAS. If NOLA beats LA and Dallas loses to Portland...We could deadly serious get to the Finals. Incredible.

@PNT
lol obviously. But at 18, he seems like a player who, if he falls low enough, might be worth a shot. Looking at his highlight tapes though I'm a little underwhelmed. It's not like he's jumping out of the gym to block shots or rebound, and his opponents are all far smaller. But by the same token, he doesn't really have to since his opponents are so small too.

I've noticed one BIG thing missing from discussions about whether or not the Thunder are for real. The standard check list goes a little something like this:
Defense: check
Rebounding: check
Toughness: check
Star scorers: check
Ability to close: check

But there is one other MAJOR box that writers aren't checking:

HATERS: Checcccccck!!

But there is one othe

I know it's a little early but this popped up on my yahoo news feed:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-wojnarowski_brazilian_prospect_nba_draft_042311

I haven't seen any of the guy so I can't formulate an educated opinion on him, but does anybody else know any more about him? From the article, he sounds like he could be a Thunder type late pick. Under the tutelage of the bash brothers, my interest has been peaked in developing bigs.

I don't really care about having the win at home. This is the first round, not the NBA Finals. As for round 2, let SA and MEM beat up on each other. I hope it goes 7.

Again, I like Rose, hes an elite player, but the medias love affair with him is corroborated by how they opt not to fret over his decided struggles. Hes proven to be clutch and beautiful while doing it, but these numbers, save his PPG, are horrifying. On the notion of him being a chucker, his shots/game might suggest that - 2 more than KD in teh playoffs. Even late in the season he seemed to be shooting an awful lot, especially for a PG

When we win tonight (yes when, not if) I want to see our guys just calmly walk off the court after the handshakes. Treat it like it's no big deal, we expected this, and on to the next round.

Every young NBA star cares about numbers. Westbrook is just learning how to play, still. His exuberance is most likely grating to other teams when they lose but it’s a big part of what makes him good a lot of the time.
I’d rather him be over confident and over zealous than timid.

People hate playing against guys like Westbrook. I hated it in high school, I hated it in college and even now, in my late 20s, I hate it in pick up games. I'm glad he's on our team.

Trying to stand up for the cause of OKC on SB Nation Seattle. I'm okay with sports hate, but I'm tired of the blatant misinformation and hatred toward OKC and Oklahomans. One person even went so far to say that Oklahoma Sooners are pretenders with only one national title. You can go after OKC fan's basketball knowledge or call Oklahomans country bumpkins with more warrant than you can compare the college football traditions of Washington and Oklahoma.

Haha loved how one of those write ups said JR's shot hit against the back board... Am I wrong or was that 110% an airball? Here is to hoping we smell blood tonight... Let's get this wrapped up.. Also why hasn't Felton said anything this time? Hah

And I wish KD to say "I can't believe we won. It was an incredible effort by all our guys. That Nuggets team is one of the best in the history of the NBA."

anonymous

A lot of the RW hate comes from his chest pounding after dunks and his little 3 point gun holster thing he does. I can get why that would get under the skin of opponents.

As far as him telling the nuggets that they would dominate them in the playoffs, well, he wasn't exactly wrong now was he?

Way OT, but did the Thunder can Chris Silva? I haven't heard anything about him for quite sometime.

I like Darnell alright but as with most writers his sense of perspective goes out the window when discussing Derrick Rose.

As great as he is, the hype around Rose really took away from one of the best NBA seasons in a long time.

correct me if im wrong but I keep hearing we beat the thuggets 5 times in a row im pretty sure its six

We beat them in December, they beat us next while they still had Carmelo. Then we won two at the end of the season and now 3 in the playoffs. That's 1-1-5 in a row.

@justin

I've said it before, but I'm reminded again during this series watching Ibaka play - this coaching staff deserves more credit than they get for their development style. The big knock on Serge is his poor assist rate, but this staff has done a great job at working around that and accentuating Serge's strengths while bringing his weaknesses along in the process.

They allow Russ the freedom to be his wild self. I think there are lots of coaches who would balk so hard at his turnovers that they would reign him in so hard that he wouldn't be effective.

I questioned the way they brought James along, but something has finally clicked with James, and as soon as it did, they fed him more and more minutes.

Heck, even Maynor has a style that's all his own, completely different from our other guards, and they know how to let him play his game in effective ways too.

There are lots of coaching staffs that would have tried harder to force a square peg into a round hole with a system or style of play, or jerk playing time around, or criticize/berate their own players into submission.

It really is a credit to this staff for being able to keep their players motivated and positive, while also allowing them to develop at a good pace. I'm sure it would have been easy to push a more complicated system on these young guys too quickly, but by keeping things simple, these guys have really matured quickly.

According to the Nuggets/fans after one of the regular season games against them, Westbrook was talking a ton of smack about how they were gonna dominate Denver in the playoffs or something.

@ATH
I grew a little concerned during the end of the regular season, mayberry, hollinger, and i think maybe even Royce made some hints he was worried about his #s.

Its evident that sometimes he tries to do too much, and it can lead to bad results sometimes. Is that him trying to help in an unproductive way? Being selfish? Immature? Not believing in his teammates enough? Being overconfident?

It's unclear what Russ is really thinking or like; but I can understand a Denver fan writing a biased comment or column, and running with that general theme.

According to the stiffs, Westbrook is the most self-absorbed player in the NBA.
LeBron will be making a mental note of that.

I may have missed something, but I have no idea where this Westbrook hate came from. Is it just the smoke-blowing, big-play screaming, complaining to refs, etc.? Is it this Felton feud? If anyone has a player or coach quote about the issue I'd love to read it.

During the Denver-OKC preview on Inside the NBA last night, I think Pam Oliver(might have been someone else but I think it was her) asked Afflalo point blank if the Thunder were just better than the Nuggets....I have never seen anyone down 3-0 look so smug. You would think they were losing the games on purpose or something given the way he answered the question.
