TGR 48: TGR vs. Denver Stiffs… it’s on!

by Thunderground Radio on April 22, 2011 at 2:27 pm 141 Comments

Well, not really. We are joined by Jeff Morton from DenverStiffs.com, the infamous writer who called OKC fans annoying, said KD was Reggie Miller, and claims the Thunder are cocky. After asking him about the hate mail he received from Thunder fans we talked about:

  • JR Smith’s mental state
  • George Karl being outcoached
  • The atmoshpere coming in Game 3
  • Rumors of Chris Anderson’s troubles in OKC

…and much more.

I hope Jeff Morton is trolling something fierce because there’s nobody in their right mind who would call Reggie Miller and Kevin Durant comparable on the court. Reggie Miller wouldn’t get 2nd place in the MVP voting in 1965, much less in 2010. This revisionist history of Miller’s career is reaching critical mass. He was never considered a Top 10 player in his career and only made 3rd Team All-NBA three times and only made the All Star team five times. Yet we’re comparing him to a legitimate MVP candidate-level franchise player? That’s nuts.
Reggie’s heroics in the playoffs completely color the perception of the layman fan into believing he was some super star player, but this was clearly not the thought process while he was playing. Reggie should be celebrated for his longevity and stand out postseason performances, but Kevin Durant’s current peak is already way beyond any of Reggie’s seasons in Indiana. He’s just way more talented.

Ouch, a proper zing. Morton does not believe this. He found something thats got a rise out of some of us. I suspect, for the sake of his reputation as a bb writer, he will soon have to come clean and acknowledge the ruse, cause i doubt even the abhorrent chris palmer could not get on board with that gaffe. But, if true, i suppose that would make Melo the equivalent of steve francis

It was nice to hear the cowardice of Mr. Morton up close and personal. If he backstroked any harder on the KD thing, I think he would have broke his arm. And to make backhand comments and the whole "accent" thing confirms for me the lack of respect he maintains while being a writer. I have absolutely no respect for the guy and I hope KD rips off half a hundred tonight just for that guy. Get a clue guy.

I don't care who gets picked to answer questions, but I know from experience that the quality of writing changes when you are composing for a main article as opposed to adding one more voice in the fray of the comment section. Also, it makes a big difference to write something in a word processor or email editor as opposed to a comment box; it doesn't seem like it should but the difference is palpable.

Should do the commenters thing. Get Royce to make an open thread. Post up the questions. Everyone just answer them in the comments in a mature fashion. Easy. Unless you're focused on it being only the select few commenters already mentioned.

i think with the Cs it is all about Doc not wanting tgo truly adjust his team's lineups and play style based on talent and the age of thier stars.....

We should be seeing so much better lineups than currently . I seemed to remember Nenad doing very well with KG next to him .

I will agree with that statement. It's just painful to see the dollars drain for them faster than my toilet for those two. I like them both, and want to see them succeed.

@shiki

Big baby is the consummate jr.high post. He wants to be a guard. Have you seen him play? He tries to drive, shoot fade aways, camps around the 3 pt. line...on top of that, he moves like a truck and is too short to defend other down low players. He is a disaster.

Sammy

@Joel
And simultaneously no wonder how much better our team looks without those two players on it.

@Joel
Those cocky celtic fans think Perk is Moses of poor thunder and our starters(maybe including KD and RUss) only play backup for them.
They didn't give Nenad any chance and less chance to Green but gave big baby more.Is he a better player?

Joel

@shiki

It's painful to see 40% of our starting lineup pretrade doing so poorly on the 2nd unit of the Celtics. Ugg.

Skeletor

Jeff Morton there is one thing Durant has over both Reggie Miller and Melo. Durant plays defense. There is many games this year (e.g., first New Orleans game in OKC this year) where Durant says, person X is killing us, I will guard them (a la Kobe) and that person shoots poorly after that. He did that to David West, Gerald Wallace, and Lebron James in the game at Miami, just to name a few. Let me know when Reggie and Melo play lock down defense, and I'll honor your comparison

When Kevin durant is open by 4+ feet, he makes it 71% of the time?!? That probably not as good as I think it is, but I think it's pretty incredible. Especially, from three he hits it 67% of the time. I know if you're open you should make it, but still that is very impressive IMO.

I'd like to thank Brad and Joel for having me on. Canadian erstwhile Grizzlies fans podcasting about a team in OKC. Wild :)

I notice that people are still up in arms about my Durant/Miller comparison. Sorry guys, I'm not backing down from that one. Take it as a compliment or don't.

I said a couple days ago, you guys should be feeling cocky right now. You deserve it. You've beaten the Nuggets four times in a row and I know that I would feel that way if the Nuggets did the same thing. There's not a soul in Denver that can muster up enough ill will to "hate" the Thunder. We just can't.

Good luck on Saturday. When the series goes back to OKC 2-2 I look forward to future debates.

Sammy :Some observations from SportsVU, the people that operate that crazy high tech player-tracking camera installed in OKC Arena: http://sportvuhoops.stats.com/thunder-highlights/

I like how they can track FT assists and hockey assists like that. I suspected Russ' assist numbers should have been higher and he was moving the ball well most of the time, and this makes me feel good about my suspecion.

I had been a sonics fan for 15 years and to say that I'm a bandwagon fan now rooting for the Thunder is crazy. I felt bad for the city of seattle and hope they do get a team but I wasn't going to start cheering for either of my hometown teams(Lakers/Clippers) because the team moved to OKC. I rooted for the team through embarrassing playoff upsets and the awful seasons before the move. No way I was gonna go to a new team when you could tell the future was going to be bright with KD being the key building block. To me it's far worse to just root for a team for having your favorite player on it. Love KD but if he's gone in a couple of years then so be it. Won't be following him to his new team but will still hope he does good....

@gr8ball83
Seriously, I bet they do! And they gotta just roll with it, they can't tell them how lame and out of touch they're being. So they are lame by association.

@Smokey
Bill Burr is really funny. I haven't seen that new special yet, though, so I'll have to check it out. He went to a Thunder game? Did he talk about it, or did you see him or what? Pretty cool.

shiki

Next game is very important.If we win,their game is over.But if we lose,they can encourage themselves.
Denver fans hope Afflalo(maybe not 100% health),Mozgov(a slow center) and JR(6-26 in these 4 games against us) to help them.But I think it is better for them to pray refs don't give KD FTs.Mavs didn't get calls in Portland.Maybe we are the same.

Speaking of Gaffigan and comedy, comedian Bill Burr (who recently took in a Thunder game) has a recent special which, in my mind, is excellent. Worth a watch if you have Netflix or other "connections"

(gotta plug Thunder fans/visitors)

justin :
You guys weren’t drawn to the Oklahoma City Thunder because the Sonics moved there, it was out of respect for Vancouver Grizzlies franchise player emeritus Bryant Reeves.

Haha, of course!
