An absolute must-read piece from Deadspin today about how Kendrick Perkins built a friendship with a couple fans. Drop everything you’re doing — even if it’s something important — and read it.
An excerpt:
Perk began to treat Justin as a sort of little brother. Every so often, he’d take Justin out to dinner after games. They’d go to Strega in Boston’s North End. The first time, Justin was afraid to order too much — or too little. “Just get what I get,” Perk told him. That turned out to be a two-pound lobster, fettuccine alfredo, and a whole chicken. Justin ate leftovers for days.
He looked up to Perk. They got their hair cut together. (“Give him the Pat Riley,” Perk told the barber when his protégé sat down in the chair. The first thing Justin’s mother said when she saw him afterward was, “Oh my god.”) They talked about women. Once Perk invited Justin to sleep over. Justin had been away at college, and Perk just wanted to catch up. Still, Justin was shocked.
“Why not?” Perk said. “You’re family.”
Yeah, probably only gonna start writing exclusively about Perk now.

@TempBoy Brandon
You are either not a Sooner fan, or you are not "totally cool with it." You can't have it both ways, contrary to what your last comment made me wonder.
Errr...
I'm just getting my head straight for football season. Don't mind me.
Oh, and Deadspin does deal in a lot of "less-than-pristine" reporting, but they're good at what they do, too, and stories like this one are there to remind people of that very fact. We are D*MN lucky to have Perk in Oklahoma City, and I hope that he stays there until we're sick of him, 'cause it'd be nice to see him retire a member of the Thunder.
man that was an incredible article. glad i took the time to read
@DJ 7
They guys who do Thunderground pod casts would be good too... I would listen to an hour of them a day... Even if it was not all Thunder related but also NBA, maybe 70/30?
@anonymous
I know this kinda makes the name pointless but are you the same person or a bunch of people who just didnt enter a name when they created an account? Cause if one person props for the name its hilarious
@DJ 7
I know i misspelled in there somwhere, forgive me for it.
@TempBoy Brandon
@Grolgar
I say we start a peptition for the both of you to take part of the Animals Show when they talk about the Thunder, since they usually write, or know what they are going to talk about they could easily Email you the day before, or call you/email you while the show takes place. I mean its real sad when i'm at work/school and a teacher, or the cooks in the back turn it on, and they believe the low knowledge the guys up there posses.
@Grolgar
Probably just as a reward. 66ers season just ended on monday.
Grolgar :@TempBoy Brandon
I know more about basketball then Al or Traber and they get paid. Their show is not made for intelligent sports conversation, but for people who don’t know anything. If you don’t know anything about basketball I’m sure they sound great.
then we make you DT'er who goes and clowns them everyday!!!
@Grolgar
That's really probably true. It's really frustrating listening to them when you do know what you're talking about. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.
Why recall Vaden (http://newsok.com/okc-thunder-recalls-robert-vaden-from-tulsa-66ers/article/3560425?custom_click=pod_headline_sports)? Just because we have an open spot?
anonymous :so Royce, how many times have you slept over at KD’s house?
And sleeping in his bushes without KD's knowledge doesn't count...
@DJ 7
I am 100% behind this idea. Sign me up!

The best part of this article is the idea of Ricky Davis doing a dance when the guy scored with him in 2k10. I think that legitimizes everything.
Royce is becoming nationally known, he's too big for the sports animal.
TempBoy Brandon :@james1 Why is it not a surprise at all that a DT member would be right and “Oklahoma’s Sports Authority” would be wrong? I honestly feel like any one of our members knows more about the Thunder than most of their staff, save Bobby and Craig (I don’t count Matt or Kelly).
thats more than likely correct, we need to get the DT'ers like Justin, and others on there. Justin can be that guy who's real stat oriented and worries all the time, and someone like yourself, Cpt, Church or Falcon can be the person who acts a little homerish but in the good sense. Then have the 3rd person be the wise guy who only chips in every now and then. If i we're asked to do anything like that i'de do it for free, but i'm much more of a gut feeling, and eyes tell the story type of guy.
Royce why don't you partake on the Animal, you would brain bang them with so much knowledge that the guys upstairs will look to hire you instead.
so Royce, how many times have you slept over at KD's house?

^^ I win!
TempBoy Brandon :@Kris Ha! Nice!@james1
Hmmm… Kris, you have some ‘splainin to do…
Kris right sports animal wrong.
@Kris

@TempBoy Brandon
Inside info :)
@DJ 7
@Kris
I was kinda thinking it would be cool to have an orange-out too, since that's our other primary color. I'm a Sooners fan and would be totally cool with it, but I doubt they do it.
Kris, where'd you hear that?
@bostonkid
Welcome to DT! Thanks for the kind words... and thanks even more for Perk! :)

@TempBoy Brandon
Blue shirts tonight
@bostonkid
bostonkid, welcome to DT! We knew when he was brought over that the fans would really,really like Perk. But as we are finding out, he's even better as a teammate/influence than we originally thought. He's friggin awesome!
TempBoy Brandon :Really cool story.
By the way, anyone know if we’re having a blue-out or white-out tonight? I’m assuming we are, but haven’t heard anything.
i hope they do it like last time and have a white-out, Another question if we were to have a game 5, do you guys think it should be a Blue Out again, or change it up this time and make it a Orange Out(i know OU fans won't like this but chill out), or a Black Out considering that NBA has been seeling a Black and Grey Durant Jersey and it would be cool to be our 3rd uniform next year.,
Perkins was a huge part of our title run the past few years in Boston. After watching him game after game on the Celtics, I realized how important of a team member he was. I miss him a lot, but I'm really happy that he is a part of such a good organization.
Stephen :I’m both proud and honored to have Perkins on the Thunder.
This.
Really cool story.
By the way, anyone know if we're having a blue-out or white-out tonight? I'm assuming we are, but haven't heard anything.
anyone noticed how twitter is updating user pages to a new look?
the new format is REALLY ugly. hard to read.
I'm both proud and honored to have Perkins on the Thunder.
BrettM2 :
Who knows how to set up a website?
lots of people ;)
that's a big question -- there are lots of parts, from picking a domain name, a host to serve it, software to create and update the site, etc.
if you just want to start a blog, you can use wordpress.com, blogspot.com, or others. That's the simplest route, by far. Just google for blogging hosts.
if you want something more complex, you've got a lot of research to do. good luck.
Who knows how to set up a website?
wow! our Justin and Perk are like brothers... cool!
Deadspin mostly deals in embarrassing gossip and dong photos but this piece and the lengthy one about the byu honor code and race were one of the more interesting sports articles ive read in a while.
