Durant named to first team All-NBA, Westbrook to second team

by Royce Young on May 12, 2011 at 1:22 pm 265 Comments

AP Photo

For a second straight year, the NBA’s scoring champion was named first team All-NBA as Kevin Durant joins Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant on the team.

Durant gathered 69 first team votes and 492 points, which is the lowest of the five. All-NBA teams are voted on by the media.

Russell Westbrook was named to the All-NBA second team after a major breakout season. Westbrook joins Dwyane Wade, Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki and Amare Stoudemire. Westbrook also had the lowest total on the second team, barely edging Chris Paul.

The third team is Paul, LaMarcus Aldridge, Zach Randolph, Al Horford and Manu Ginobili.

Kendrick Perkins also received a couple votes, which is pretty ridiculous considering he played only 23 games this season.

There was a lot of talk whether or not KD deserved first team over Dirk and I think he absolutely does. He led the league in scoring, his team improved and he finished with a quietly excellent year. Expectations were so high for Durant that some just never were able to wrap their head around the fact he had a great season.

As for Westbrook over Chris Paul? That’s definitely iffy. I understand why because Paul wasn’t himself for most of the season. He showed off his skill in the playoffs, but his numbers weren’t Chris Paul-ian for the entire season. He was good, no doubt, but he wasn’t great except for a couple months. To me, picking Westbrook over him isn’t any kind of stretch. Westbrook’s numbers (21.9 ppg, 8.2 apg, 4.6 apg, 23.6 PER) are better than Paul’s (15.9 ppg, 9.8 apg, 4.1 rpg, 23.7 PER) and Westbrook’s team was much better. There will be outrage, but I think that’s more because people have what he did in the opening round against the Lakers still fresh in their head.

@Kris
That's good womanly advice there. Thank ya. I'm gonna bookmark this thread to show it to her in case this situation comes up. :)

@TempBoy Brandon

Here's the compromise and will probably give you more leniency in the future... if she does let you go to the first game instead of pageant stuff and you send her flowers or something of the sort on that day to wish her good luck and that you're still supporting her even if you're not there it will go over a million times better. It really is just the small things, and if it's not...well you're probably better off to keep looking anyway haha

@cdub00
Nah, there's a swimsuit night (don't wanna miss that one.. haha), an evening gown night, talent night, and then the finals night.

@DJ 7
Yeah, if it comes down to it, I'm gonna try to compromise and go to the first game and miss the second one. So I'll let you and Landstander fight over that game 4 ticket. ;)

justin :Bill Simmons and Sean Grande (Celtics PBP guy) talked about the James Harden to Boston stuff. They both said that the initial trade they heard about involved Harden for Perkins.

Something tells me Brooks was the lead man in this.

@TempBoy Brandon

Just work soemthing out with ehr. If its really that important to her that you go and be there all 4 days then its up to you to decide whether or not you do it.

I'm sure if shes a cool chick she won't mind you missing one day. Unless she really wants you to be there.

Either screw dang NBA Scheduling. You think it would help if both CF's went to 7?

i'de be more than happy to be a part of Landstanders new solution to your problem!!!

my wife used to be real involved in the Miss Oklahoma deal, and she would let me watch a Finals game over going to the pageant. And 4 days? Its a 1 day deal brotha.

justin :Not to play devil’s advocate but there are plenty of fish in the sea and you never know if the Thunder would ever make it to the Finals again.

Exactly. If she doesn't understand that you're a huge Thunder fan, the long term won't work.

TempBoy Brandon

@cdub00
Ha! Oh trust me, if I don't go, I'll be the only person at Miss Oklahoma wearing a Thunder hoodie and hat.

@justin
You're like the little devil on my shoulder... and I like it!

@Landstander
Haha! Wow, you are a true hero.

Can Harden lead Celtics bench as he does for us?I dont know.But I think it is difficult for him to build confidence because Doc Rivers is a young player killer.Brooks doesn't start him but plays him as core as our bench.Doc cannot do it.

@TempBoy Brandon

I can certainly see where that's a dilemma.

I could take one for the team and accept your ticket, that way you don't *have* to make a decision, and your relationship can continue to grow and prosper.

The things I would do for another Thunder fan. Aren't I great? ;)

I don’t think you should put basketball in front of something that means alot to your girlfriend. Would you rather go to a basketball game, or be single? We’ll have plenty of more basketball games to attend and watch.

booooo.....where's your team spirit? kidding.

TempBoy Brandon

@DJ 7
Oh, I know, I don't really have much of a choice. I gotta be there for her, and I want to be there for her. But as a diehard Thunder fan and season ticket member, to miss the experience of the Thunder's first ever Finals appearance would be pretty crushing. Anyways, didn't mean to throw a pity party, I was just curious on the dates and hoped my fears wouldn't be realized. Stupid NBA schedulers.

TempBoy Brandon
TempBoy Brandon 5pts

@JJJ
Oh man, you just confirmed my fear... the 7th and 9th are Tuesday and Thursday, which also would be the first two games in OKC. :(

That's exactly what I'm hoping for--- the whole I don't have to be there all four days thing. This thing is a huge deal in her life though, so I'm not sure how much compromising I can get done. But I may take you up on that offer to call her up! ;)

JJJ

They usually play every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday in primetime IIRC. I don't have a calendar in front on me to confirm your dates, but that's what I remember

Haha. Dude, if we do make it to the Finals, I am seriously going to have a tough decision to make. Thunder vs. the Girlfriend. The Mavs, Grizz and Heat all seem so weak a matchup in comparison.

Kris

@TempBoy Brandon

Looks like you've got some compromising to work with, surely you dont have to be there for all four days? If she's an awesome gf she will say go watch the game. If not, give me her # and I will talk some sense into her from a girl's perspective :) juuusttt kidding!

TempBoy Brandon

I know it's ridiculously early to ask this, seeing as how we haven't even made it to the Western Conference Finals yet, but does anyone have any smart guesses as to what the NBA Finals schedule might be? I looked it up and I guess they will start no later than June 2 and end by June 16, but any of you guru's that know things like what nights of the week they usually play the Finals on have any best guesses as to what the schedule would be?

Basically, my girlfriend is competing in an event that will take place on June 7, 8, 9 and 11, and I'm really freaked out that I might have to miss OKC's first ever Finals appearance... or be newly single, depending on what I choose to go to.

As we all know, Thabos value took a serious hit this year and seeming for no reason other than his hustle seems missing. Is Marcus Thorton available? Did he resign with the Kings. JH and MT as our 2 SG's? Id like that.

Greg :Rick Adelman with the Lakers worries me.

Why so? Didnt they just get swept in the second round with the Sen Master? Unless they add a top 5-10 player, I dont see them doing much better. Kobe will lose another step by this time next year.

From that quote it sounds like Ainge is doubling down on his Jeff Green bet. Don't know that guarantees he'll resign him if their are other suitors but it sounds like he at least is interested in keeping him.

Congrats to both Russ and KD! I was actually pleasantly surprised to see that Russ made the 2nd team, and happy to see that KD beat out Dirk.

I also find it hilarious that Perk got more votes than Chris Bosh.

So does this mean that according to the media/voters, the Thunder have 2 of the Top 10 players in the NBA? Wow, that's really something.

JJJ
JJJ 5pts

"Maybe there’s a change of roles. Maybe Paul comes off the bench, cuts down on his minutes. Maybe we find a way to get Jeff more minutes. His role will expand if he’s back here next year. There’s no question about that ... It wouldn’t totally shock me if there’s a change in the starting lineup, but that’s just way too tough to tell."

~ Danny Ainge

A lil shocking to hear that the captain could be replaced in the starting lineup by Green next yr. Anyone think Jeff will actually resign w Bos, or look to play somewhere else and possibly get paid more?

Perkins Game Face

So the owners want reduced contracts in terms of salary and years, a hard cap, and an amnesty clause? Yeah there's gonna be a lockout.

Perkins Game Face
Perkins Game Face 5pts

Basically the owners want a reprieve from the mistakes their bad gms made. What a joke. Tough luck you couldn't or didn't hire a Presti. I mean sure Sam will eventually take a big swing and miss but hey that'll happen sometimes. For them to say hey we want a get out of jail free card for high price gambles is bs. How will small markets compete if they'll always get outbid with big markets knowing they can take that chance?

Crow

Crow

@justin

True. No benefit vs benefit to others = not a "good thing".

There are a lot of moving parts to the CBA. Better revenue sharing (especially local TV revenue) or a firmer cap or other things could offset the impact of amnesty.

JJJ
JJJ 5pts

@JJJ

By that I mean we don't have any important FAs other than Russ in the next 2 yrs

JJJ
JJJ 5pts

@justin

I agree it doesn't benefit us, but isn't the amnesty clause a one-year deal?

Crow
Crow 5pts

I would think Okafor still has trade value. I'd was somewhat interested in him before when they had expirings.

justin
justin 5pts

Amnesty marginalizes our cap advantage IMO, and may give teams flexibility to bid harder for our coming FA's.

Crow
Crow 5pts

@JJJ

Yeah there would be more in the mid-price range.

Walton is a good call. Bucks with Maggette, maybe but somebody else might still trade for him. Nocioni is a pretty good possibility.
