Moving on: Five adjustments for Game 2

by Royce Young on May 2, 2011 at 2:34 pm 178 Comments

Ron Martinez/NBAE/Getty Images

So the Thunder lost Game 1. As a result, everyone promptly freaked. More silly discussions about Russell Westbrook, people wondering if the series is over and on and on.

It happens. When you lose a game in the playoffs, especially Game 1 at home, it happens. Everything is maginified and amplified in the postseason. Questionable shots become horrible shots, forced passes become disastrous turnovers and small critiques and questions become massive doubts and overreactions.

Again, it happens. One loss puts you closer to four, which means you’re out. The playoffs present scary, tense moments. And this fanbase is largely unfamiliar with all this. Thunder fans have only had one previous playoff venture and that one was all gravy. Didn’t matter if OKC was swept, it was  party and everyone was happy. This trip is different.

The Thunder did three very important things badly yesterday: They didn’t protect the paint, they didn’t rebound and they didn’t take care of the ball. Adding a fourth, they didn’t take the ball either.

The Grizzlies had an offensive rating of 123.48. That’s pretty, pretty good. The Thunder 107.36 points per 100 possessions, which is not bad by any stretch and in most every case this season, would result in a win. For everyone wanting to blame the Thunder loss on a certain player, look no further than those numbers. The defense was terrible, period.

But it’s one game. The Grizzlies have a big edge, but they still need three more. All the Thunder has to focus on is getting things righted Tuesday night. There will be pressure, there will be some anxiety. Which might be a good thing. Things need to change though. The Thunder can’t play the same thing Sunday or just “harder” and expect to win. So here are five adjustments that could help.

1. Dig down on Zach Randolph. This is something the Thunder doesn’t like doing much of, especially since acquiring Kendrick Perkins. Even after his terrific game yesterday, I still think Serge Ibaka can defend Randolph to a degree, but having the guards dig down and show double-teams could maybe force him to give the ball up some.

Randolph isn’t a big guy that’s prone to turn the ball over (2.0 per game during the regular season) and passes well out of a double-team. It’s worth a shot to at least try and force him to give it up. When he’s got his lean-back jumper going, he’s impossible to defend. The only way you can stop him is if you keep the ball away from him.

One other adjustment with Randolph: Play him tight. Like get right up in him. He can put the ball on the floor, but that’s better than just giving him the lean-back jumper. It looked like Ibaka had Randolph’s pump fake in his head a bit too much and was late challenging on the jumper. The Thunder tried getting up in Randolph later in the game and I thought they were more effective that way.

2. Pack the paint. The Grizzlies aren’t a proficient 3-point shooting team (just 3.8 3-point makes per game, last in the league). In the postseason, the Grizzlies rank dead last in both attempts and makes, by pretty wide margins. They don’t want to shoot from outside. They want to score in the paint. It’s just a matter of you stopping them.

3. Make shots. That’s simple, I realize. Not great analysis, I realize. But it’s true. The Thunder missed a bunch of shots they should’ve made yesterday. The 51 percent at the rim is actually higher than I expected, but OKC went 0-6 inside the paint. Compare that to 5-13 for Memphis. The Thunder went 10-21 from midrange, which is good, but the Grizzlies went 15-31. Again, poor Thunder defense for the most part.

Part of that frustrating offense stems from not including James Harden in the Thunder scheme. Now Harden deserves some blame himself for the clunker he tossed in yesterday. He shouldn’t go 2-5 for just five points in most any circumstance. But the Thunder slid into a two-man offense for almost the entire second half yesterday. Everything was one-on-one. Harden can’t score if he doesn’t get the ball in a position to score.

Other than Ibaka, Westbrook and Durant, the rest of the team score just 21 points. That can’t happen. Mainly because Harden should be getting 15-20 on his own. A better, more diversified Thunder offense means a better Thunder defense.

4. Take care of the dang ball. Probably the best solution is to slow down. It looked like the Thunder tried to manufacture energy by just playing faster yesterday. As a result, Russell Westbrook got a bit out of control, the team threw away passes and players dribbled the ball off their feet. Slow down, play smart and trust your game.

Related: Force turnovers.

5. Defend the high pick-and-roll. This was the Grizzlies crunch time offense. They brought Marc Gasol out very high to run pick-and-roll with Mike Conley. This pulled Kendrick Perkins out of the paint and made him move his feet on the perimeter.

Even Perk said after the game that he didn’t know Gasol could consistently hit that 15-foot jumper (he shot 40 percent from there during the season). Gasol wasn’t afraid to tee up the midrange jumper but he also was patient with the ball and let the Thunder defense rotate a tick before dumping off to a cutter or Randolph in the paint. The high pick-and-roll sets up good high-low action for Memphis. The Thunder has to cover this better, otherwise the Grizzlies gave a solid go-to set in big moments, something the Nuggets did not.

I love the Thunder! But I have a very important question for you Thunder fans that doesn't have to do with basketball but I would really appreciate your feedback...I'm trying to develop Jack In The Box across OKC, do you like or dislike Jack In The Box?? Just curious. GO THUNDER!!!!!

@DavyTheWise
Maybe that is our problem. Kendrick is attracted to Randolph! We can make the necessary adjustments and win tonight!

The last 5 games for ATL, Joe Johnson played about 10 minutes short than he usually does. Same with Harford. Their starters were getting about 8-10 minutes less. They were trying to go into the playoffs without injuries.

I found a nice stat.
35-10 when RW averages more than 8 assists.
.
Just 20-17 when he has less than 8 assists.
RW has not had more than 10 assist in the last 22 games. I love the Honey Badger. I believe he’s our dark horse. We live and die in this series by RW.

I should have said last night!

My god man..... Maybe it's because that's just not my style but that would bother me a bit even if someone on our team talked like that... Some people may say well it's the mental thing and if they think it with their athletic ability then they can achieve it... Once again maybe it's just because that's never been my style... I was a decent athlete... All state foot all and soccer, all district basketball. And state champ 100 meter... But never in my life did I feel I was good enough even compared to high schoolers to say nobody can stop me... Maybe that's why I didn't make it into a professional career though haha... Sure hope someone shuts him up is the whole point of my rant... Promise I wasn't trying to brag just saying even with those accomplishments I always felt very humble and grateful to be doing what I was doing... Thus my appreciation for Durant

He’s too slow. He’s a big body. He can foul. I don’t think nobody in the league can stop me. Not only Perk. I tell Perk to his face. I already told him before.’”

I have to disagree, pretty strongly.

"Atlanta defeated the Magic, and that was no way an upset. Atlanta was playing well in the end of the season to my standards as far as the East is concern." - Atlanta lost 6 games in a row to end the season, including a 32 point loss to the Wizards. Not sure how you can spin that...

An 8 seed (Memphis) beating SA without having their best player (Gay) is a monumental upset. Just b.c the Grizzlies looked good doing it doesn't mean it's not an upset.

If you want to get on ESPN for their Derrick Rose/Bulls love, I'm with you. It's time to call out Michael Wilbohn and his utter lack of NBA knowledge after he tried to sell us on how good the Pacers were in the middle of Round 1. He said there was no way the Hawks or Magic would challenge the Bulls like the Pacers did. Total blind spot for the entire ESPN crowd.

indeed. if we can limit our turnovers and just score we can do this. Harden needs to get the ball more too *see game one of denver and then game 2* it can be done :P . Also, lets home the refs actually DO their job today. It will be interesting to see how we respond to that loss. thunder up~

I hope the Thunder realize that there are some adjustments that need to be made. The common reponse to what went wrong the other day was we need to play harder. I agree with that but we need to make some adjustments too. If you over play the pick and roll it doesn't matter how hard you play.

If Matt Devlin is the announcer, plug your ears. Notice how he pronounces "Grizzlies." Dude has a speech impediment and it comes out "Grizzwees." I never noticed it until someone brought it up to me and now it is like nails on a chalkboard. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why whoever schedules the announcers has not noticed that and avoided putting Devlin on Memphis games.

Skeletor
Skeletor 5pts

IT's crazy to me that 3 teams have lost HCA. I know most are saying since we lost to Memphis in the regular season they have the edge, and it is over. Nevertheless, I think if we win Game 2 we can take one in Memphis and make this interesting. We played one of the worst games of the season in game 1 and not all of that is one Memphis' stellar defense. Memphis two defensive stoppers are mostly in two stop KD, which they didn't do. Ironically, the person who stopped KD the most was his own teammate who didn't get him the ball

Skeletor

Justin has questioned Durant therefore Justin has questioned the Thunder. Can the lynching begin yet?

Not sure what game you were watching, but I have no problem with espn questioning the lakers instead of giving dallas props. Mavs didn't have a chance to "choke as usual" or "create a lead and hang on to it." Remember it was the Lakers that were up by 16 in the second half, and by 7 at the beginning at the fourth. It was the Lakers who choked, were unable to protect their large lead, and couldn't close. Save for a stupid backcourt foul by Pau, followed by a stupid turnover by Pau, the game would have been business as usual.

IBlockYoMama
IBlockYoMama 5pts

And I agree, just like we've done all season, we are usually very good at bouncing back after a loss. I know we can and should win tomorrow, but I always get a little nervous with an athletic team like The Grizz who are capable of squeezing out wins. They dominated the second half of the season.

justin

@ChilamBilam12

LeBron does all of those things, and does them better than Durant. Durant has an advantage in the mid range area, between about 10-16 feet, where he's more efficient than LeBron. That's about it. LeBron actually shot better from 16-23 feet than Durant the last two seasons, and he's assisted on a lot fewer of those attempts.

IBlockYoMama
IBlockYoMama 5pts

Do the good people of OKC like Jack In The Box????? Let me know.

ChilamBilam12
ChilamBilam12 5pts

@justin
Durant create opportunities for other players just by being present on the court.. the double teams he so often draws open lanes for Westbrook and outside shooting for players like Harden and Cook, not to mention he is always the target of the opponents best defensive asset, not that it often makes a difference.. Lebron is a fantastic player, but he makes a lot of things happen simply because he can out power opponents.. Durant's true shooting ability and overall mindset are far and away better then Lebrons.. if Lebron can ever learn to ditch his ego, he will grow a lot more as a player in the NBA

justin
justin 5pts

People have short memories. LeBron doesn't always choke in the last two minutes. He had one of the best fourth quarters ever against Detroit that one time in the playoffs. LeBron also doesn't have to score to impact the game to close, he can create for others...

And that's the big difference between Durant and LeBron. Durant has to do a lot of other things to make up for the fact that LeBron creates opportunities for others at a significantly higher rate than Durant + scores almost as well.

Durant's still got plenty of time to develop that skill set and hopefully he's not through developing his physique either.

Skeletor
Skeletor 5pts

Durant can guard 3, some 4, and every now then he has guarded 5s (remember him on Gasol). I jest.

Skeletor
Skeletor 5pts

I think that Durant can be more of a clutch/killer instinct player than Lebron. Lebron always chokes in the last 2 mins of games

DJ 7
DJ 7 5pts

justin :
I don’t see Durant getting past Dwight or LeBron unless he evolves as a defensive player at this point. LeBron’s better at everything and is almost as efficient as a scoring option…
Now, if Durant can develop his defensive abilities, and we can put him on three positions, maybe he’ll get there.

Lebron better hope that he can get his calls at the end of games like usual because if he doesn't, well he can buy a bucket late in games from above 15 feet to save his life. Thats something Durant will always have over Lebron. I agree though, KD will have to developed defensive abilities. He has shown signs of it thus far. He's played good defense so far int he playoffs. Durant lacks post scoring, once he develops that it'll amazingly difficult to stop him. I mean he's shown he has the strength now to finish at the rim.

Durant WILL be better than Lebron, in the future but as of now Lebron is better no doubt.

I really hate how ESPN, and the media in general play the series. For instance Memphis beating the Spurs is an upset yes because its an 8 seed defeating a 1 seed, but they ignore how much of an edge Memphis really had on the Spurs. They don't play it like that though, They say the Spurs beat themselves, and they were to old. Why can't they say Memphis just plain out beat.

Atlanta defeated the Magic, and that was no way an upset. Atlanta was playing well in the end of the season to my standards as far as the East is concern. The Magic even though they were able to win in the Season didn't really have an identity, and they ended up showing in the playoffs. It wasn't like Atlanta was over-matched. As a matter of fact, besides the Center position(which they have a premium center of their own) were better than the Magic. Now ATL beats Chicago at their Chi-towns own place. The topic won't be about how the Hawks played good team defense without fouling, Joe Johnson and Crawford handling the ball effectively and making the right shots, Or how They were able to defend the 3 pt line effectively. I can tell you right now 3 of the Bulls 3 pointers were LUCKY HALF ASSED shots, and 1 was at the end of the game where Rose was just trying to get his before the buzzer sounded. Nope instead they are going to talk about how Rose tried so hard but he couldn't lead his team to a win. How his team was completely ineffective(Even though Rose was the reason why they kept on losing momentum, Yeah he was making HIS shots, and making plays for HIMSELF, He couldn't guard ANYONE.)

Dallas isn't that badly matched against the Lakers at all. They have Chandler and Haywood to throw at Gasol/Bynum. Dirk(as much as i hate to say it) is the best PF in the league. J-Kidd > Derick Fisher. I mean they are evenly matched, and Dallas instead of chocking as usual(they really almost did again) they were able to create a lead and hang on to it. Instead they'll try to play it about how maybe Kobe's ankle that was from a week ago is still effecting him, and how L.A. might have been robbed on a few calls(really L.A. fans already complaining about officiating, i mean come on Laker fans?!).

I wish people weren't complete idiots, or homers.

If i hear that its an upset when the C's get PP back and beat the Heat. I may very well throw up.

Skeletor
Skeletor 5pts

Well you can be more objective about Skip because you're not an Oklahoman. Maybe I'm just a softy for a huge Sooner fan who also roots on OKC (not just the team) and supports them in the national media. So I guess you don't support Kenny's belief that in 3 years Durant will be the best player in the league?

justin
justin 5pts

Skip Bayless is terrible, and Durant is not better than LeBron.

Skeletor
Skeletor 5pts

So OKC losing HCA doesn't look so bad anymore. Now the big story for Round 2 isn't just that we choked, it will be which team who lost HCA will get it back and go on to win

Skeletor

Actually I agree with Skip for the most part and am a big Skip fan for these reasons: He's from OKC, roots for OKC, is a big Thunder fan, and is a huge proponent for KD, even going as far to say KD is not only better than Lebron, he's the best player in the league.

anyone watch Take 10 on ESPN this morning.. i don't often like a lot of what Skip Baylis has to say, but i couldn't help but feel like he hit the nail on the head when he broke down Westbrook's recent play.. he said "the worst thing that has happened to Westbrook this season, was finding himself compared to Derrick Rose".. his point being that RW is now trying to hard to be "The Guy" for us, instead of playing much as he did earlier this season, as just an integral part of the whole unit.. and i'm not a Westbrook hater in the least, nor would i take any other PG in the league over what we have found in such a young and versatile kid like Russ.. but it's obvious that something is just wrong, and Skip's point seemed about as valid as any i've heard so far
