The Thunder even up with Memphis 1-1, 111-102

BOX SCORE

Who those guys were Sunday, I have no idea. Because the team that showed up in white tonight was pretty much the exact opposite. In the day off, Scott Brooks did some coaching and the team did some soul searching. Backs to it Tuesday night, they were ready. Really ready.

It’s simple: Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol were complete non-factors. Combined, they went just 5-22 for 28 points. Kevin Durant had 25 points, Russell Westbrook was solid, James Harden and Eric Maynor combined for 36 off the bench. But the guys that won this game for Oklahoma City were Nick Collison, Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins.

Reason being, it was a completely revamped attack on Randolph. It was obvious on Memphis’s opening possession as Randolph caught the ball on the block and went into his jab-step, pump-fake arsenal, but Ibaka was right up on Randolph. No room to breathe. No room to shoot over the top. The Thunder played Randolph entirely more physical and took him out of the positions he likes to score. This was what we expected in Game 1. This is what we expected from the Thunder’s new and improved front line. The interior was locked down. That’s the way the Thunder are supposed to play.

“I thought Nick did a really good job keeping a body on him,” Scott Brooks said. “For the first three quarters I thought we played as well as anyone could play on Zach.”

It’s odd though because the Thunder still turned the ball over 16 times, still gave up 13 offensive rebounds and still took seven fewer shots. Seemed like a recipe for disaster. But behind the stellar interior defense — and really overall defense (Memphis shot just 44 percent) — the Thunder hit shots. OKC shot almost 53 percent, went 8-14 from 3 and got to the free throw line and converted (27-33). Westbrook was good, Durant did his thing and of course Maynor and Harden went a combined 11-16. I’m not saying the Thunder can’t do that again, but we received the gift of good shooting in this one. A lot of it was because the looks were better and less was forced. But still.

One thing that was different though? The Thunder forced 16 turnovers, meaning the margin was even. That’s the key. Game 1, that didn’t happen and the Thunder paid for it. While OKC gave it away a good amount against tonight, they took it away too, which is the important thing.

The Thunder led by 10 most of the third but Memphis closed to within six and then eight to head to the fourth. I figured the first three minutes of the fourth would essentially decide the game. In those three minutes, OKC, led by its bench, outscored the Grizzlies 10-3 to push the lead to 15. And Scott Brooks did an interesting thing: He hung with the bench. And they did an interesting thing: They extended the lead to 20.

It was a great move by Brooks and really illustrates how his “feel” has improved. I think a year ago, he might’ve stuck with his normal rotation and brought Durant and Westbrook back with eight minutes left. Not that Brooks has never done that, but in a big game and in big moments, Brooks trusted his intuition and his team.

Obviously the Thunder were desperate and needed this. There was pressure. There was anxiety. But the team responded. It’s a series again — not that it ever wasn’t, but some were freaking a bit — and the Thunder are back in position to take control. They have to win in Memphis at some point, but that’s not impossible. Not if they defend like this. Especially if they shoot like this.

NOTES:

  • Serge Ibaka left the game after banging knees in the second quarter, but returned. He then came down on it funny late in the game and had to leave. He said after the game he thought it was fine, but he will be evaluated tomorrow.
  • Russell Westbrook was good. Not great. Good. He took two more shots than KD (oh no!!!) but had 24 points and six assists. It really just felt like he was more settled into this game. Not forcing near as much, not pressing near as much. He had four turnovers, but two of those came via big men fumbling good passes.
  • OKC turned it over seven times in the first quarter and only nine more times the next three.
  • KD: “I think we did a great job of starting the game out with great intensity.”
  • Westbrook doinked a fast break dunk and it gave the Grizzlies a bit of life at the end as they cut it to six with 40 seconds remaining, but this time, Perk didn’t throw any fullcourt outlet passes out of bounds. The Thunder hit their free throws and closed Memphis out.
  • Did you know: Zach Randolph did not score a basket in the second half.
  • Harden and Darrel Arthur got into it a bit with Arthur eventually picking up a technical. Arthur hit Harden with a bow to the beard. Harden said of it, “He got me with an elbow, but it’s playoff basketball.”
  • Brooks played Perk and Nazr Mohammed for I think, the first time ever tonight. It was OK, but not amazing, but I liked the thought. I liked that he was trying something new, trying to adjust.
  • Text from my wife: “I bet James Harden was the one that killed Osama bin Laden. He’s so bad.” Harden had eight in the first quarter tonight. He had five total in Game 1. Harden went 11-11 from the line and just looked like a whole new dude.
  • Funny moment in the first half: After a call by Bill Kennedy, Perk went after him arguing it. Kennedy was having none and said something Perk didn’t like. Perk responded with, “Don’t talk to me like that!” To which Kennedy responded, “Don’t scream at me! Don’t scream at me!”
  • This game had a very physical feel to it. KD and Shane Battier were really going at it. Ibaka was fighting like mad on the block. Lionel Hollins said: “They were just more aggressive. It was a classic desperate, more aggressive team.” The Grizzlies honestly looked to be on the verge of completely being frazzled and losing their composure.
  • Another fan hit a halfcourt shot, winning $20,000. That’s the third this year. As pointed out to me, that makes fans 3-46 this season. A solid six percent.
  • KD put on one of the blue Thunder giveaway shirts midway through the fourth quarter. I chuckled quietly to myself about that for a good two minutes.
  • The Thunder’s now 23-6 in bounce back games, including the playoffs.
  • Collison, a +15 in this one. A game-high.

Things are now set up for a big Game 3. I anticipated a long series. Memphis is a group prepared to fight. The Grizzlies don’t back down. Remember, they took one of two in San Antonio and then took it to the Spurs after that in Memphis. The same fate could await the Thunder. The plan tonight, worked. It worked really well. But Lionel Hollins isn’t going to sit on his hands. Randolph isn’t just going to accept it. The Grizzlies will come ready Saturday. And the Thunder better be too.

Next up: At Memphis Saturday.

Nice picture of Harden's beard. He was huge last night in providing the Thunder with a third scoring option that they've been desperately needing. His 21 points off the bench were much better than his five in Game One, and that made the difference in the game. Check it out:

Memphis has a good crowd these playoffs, but OKC won in Denver, and Denver's a better home team than Memphis. If OKC can bring the same kind of defense to Memphis it can take one game.

Which side of the Arena were you on? Our side got the bonus of seeing a lone Grizzlies fan removed from the Arena. Dude yelling when our guys shot free throws and started a "MVP" chant when Randolph was at the line. Guess a couple Thunder fans got into a tussle with him as they all were escorted out late in the game.

I’m not really that worried about the Memphis crowd. They didn’t show up at all in the regular season and are just now hopping onto the bandwagon. If OKC can jump on memphis early like they did last night, I don’t expect a lot of noise (sound familiar?)

Confident words coming from someone whose team got whipped at home in game 1. We have won every home game during these playoffs. Have you? TylerD951 is apparently coming to Memphis for the game. If you dont believe the energy this city is putting behind the Grizz, ask him what it was like in the Forum when he gets back. Not trying to be an instigator, but I'm pretty sick of people talking about Memphians being bandwagon fans. Have we done a good job of packing the arena on a consistent basis during the regular season? No, we haven't. But, your fan base is in a slightly different situation in that your team has only been in OKC for, what, 3 years? When the Grizz moved to Memphis, our fans packed the Pyramid for the first few seasons. Then, as most cities do when their teams consistently lose over a long period of time, and their front office makes poor FA and draft decisions, attendance dropped off. The front office specifically jaded some fans. It picked back up during our playoff run from 04-07 then dropped back off until this year. I've been a supporting fan since the get-go, and it irks me that, just because we are enjoying some postseason success for the first time ever, people interpret that as bandwagonism.

If he would stay out of the ref's face after every play, it might help keep the boys with the whistles off him.

I think so too, but I was really watching Russ and he was fighting through screens left and right. So the key for me is keeping Russ active and not gambling as much, while hoping Conley doesnt have a banner night again.

My favorite part of being in the arena at the game last night was actually when Russell missed his break-away dunk, that every single one of the 18,000+ fans was amped up to give the primal howl with him afterward. It bounced so hard off the rim it shot into the 4th row of the club seats, and the look of shock on his face was mirrored right back at him from 18,000+ stunned faces. The collective groan was as deafening as any of the delerious screaming before had been. And then he smiled, laughed at himself and shook his head, and we all smiled and laughed with him.

(well Perk didn't ACTUALLY smile, but I bet he wanted to)

considering conley has made 5 three pointers in the playoffs, 3 of which came last night, I say let him keep shooting. I don't think that will beat us

walrusmuse

Conley was killing us, and I watched Russ fight through screen after screen (one moving one that Gasol set was terribly frustrating-RW was called for a foul) and still get burned. He definitely worked hard to stay on him, but Memphis was treating it like a set play everytime.

I'm with Darnell-we live and die by Harden on this series, and probably by a combo of defensively keeping one or two of Conley-Gasol-Z Bo at bay paired with one other role player stepping up.

Memphis is good, they showed that with their fight towards the end (I wouldnt call it a comeback), and they are weirdly dangerous. But last night we were simply a superior team, when we play like we don't deserve it, but that we can earn it, we dominate pretty well. Ibaka and Nick were superb on D.

We lost a lot of piddly tips in the paint still, yet each one was fought for and hustled for. Good to see.

Refs were awful last night: case in point: Ibaka drives to the lane and gets an offensive foul called on him. Probably deserved. Then Collison absorbs a charge in the paint in a nearly identical stance (out of the circle, definitely set) and is called for blocking. I sincerely feel like the refs called it to keep the Grizz in it. It was weird. We also got some calls/no calls, including Russ basically jumping into the air and traveling.

I also am pissed that Perk really gets called for fouls because he's Perk, and not because he actually fouls anyone.

But I'm happy about our play (save for the meltdown towards the end) big time. The bench seemed to just start getting lazy, then Brooks pulled em and brought in the closers.

Russ played really well tonight, there were only one or two shots ever that felt unnecessary, and he passed it really well tonight, while being confident and scoring in the paint on some big moves.

@Daniel

Conley made some threes off of screens which is rare for him, almost all of his 3PT'ers are assisted. He's a decent mid range shooter but any time a guy goes 10-15 from the field and eight of the makes are jump shots 15+ feet out, it's a little bit anomalous.

Was the Conley we saw in Game 2 an aberration or has he been playing like that consistently in the playoffs? He looked like Ray Allen out there for stretches. It’s probably why the ppp for the PnR handler was still high in Game 2.

Do we play him the same way in Game 3 and hope he comes back to Earth?

Game 1: 9 plays, 1.44 PPP
Game 2: 14 plays, 1.07 PPP

Memphis Post Up

Game 1: 19 plays, 1.26 PPP
Game 2: 19 plays, .68 PPP (!)

Memphis scored a lot more on spotting up and off screen with their perimeter guys in this game, but the difference in defensive focus and drilling down on what Memphis wants to do is pretty clear in these numbers.

Perk was going crazy last night. He wanted a piece of Randolph a coulpe of times and had to be restrained. I thought he was a little bit too amped last night. He was just running into people. He needs to play physical basketball but he needs to play physical within the rules. He shoved Gasol when he had the ball a couple times and they were obvious fouls that were needless.

I loved the intensity of the team overall. If we can limit the turnovers and bring that intensity we can beat that team no matter where we play. Memphis will come stronger next game and I'm guessing the refs won't let us play that physical every game but it seems to me that when we play physical they call it early and don't as much late. We need to continue to do that because Memphis beats us if we aren't physical.

That Yahoo! article that talks about the Thunder getting together on Monday night for a players-only meeting is really incredible. It totally showed in the way they played last night.

The whole defense was swarming and reacting and really made life miserable for the Grizzlies. I especially liked some of the double downs and also the "fake" double-downs on Z-Bo. Like sometimes Thabo or Russ would run at Z-Bo, stay for just a second, then run back to their man. I think it confused him, like he didn't know when or if the double was coming, or he'd try and dribble, then be forced to pick up his dribble and launch an off-balance shot.

Major props to Eric Maynor in this game. He was incredibly huge. Props also to Nick Collison, who did outstanding work while Serge was out.

Now we gotta steal at least one game in Memphis, which will be difficult. Their crowd is going to be absolutely bonkers. But I think if we build off of our defensive effort in Game 2, it can be done.

Something I noticed while watching the game at the Arena was D. Cook getting very frustrated. There were times with Eric's drives that he could have made the pass to Daequan, but went back up top to Harden...which usually ended in being a good decision with a score. One time I saw Cook very frustrated and I thought that it was him not getting the ball, but thinking back it looked more like he was wanting the player on the other side to keep moving through the play. I love having him there as an option and I hope I'm mis-reading his frustration. He's a nice component for our reserves.

I honestly think the key to James Harden's aggressiveness is his midrange jumper. Teams over play his 3 and when he goes by them they go to the rim to stop him there. If he hits his midrange jumper he is really, really good and tough to stop.

Very exciting!

It was good for us to see Harden getting aggressive. If Perk, Nick, and Serge can play even half as well as they did last night on Gasol and Randolph and we get that same James Harden for another three games, I think it's going to be hard for the Grizz to beat us, but that's the thing about the playoffs, you never really know who is going to step up each game.

Good health to you guys (but, not good luck)! Thanks for the positive comments!

After that game, there is nothing for the Grizz to be confident about, so you can bet they will come out with that ferocious underdog attitude everyone saw in the Spurs series and Game 1 with you guys. We lost that edge after winning game 1, and I knew you guys would win game 2 when Z-Bo started running his mouth about how no one can guard him. Last night, you guys beat us at our own game. You were tougher, hungrier and you outhustled us from the start. That game shouldnt have even been as close as it was. We were down 21 in the 3rd! Of course, it helped that your bench (Harden and Maynor, specifically) seemingly couldnt miss a shot. Now it's up to us to hold down home court advantage. What an exciting series so far for fans of both teams...
