Thunder fans welcome team home after triple-OT win

by Royce Young on May 10, 2011 at 11:46 am 30 Comments

Video via Nate Robinson

As soon as the final horn sounded in Oklahoma City’s 133-123 Game 3 triple-overtime win, I had emails and tweets pouring in. When does the team arrive home? Can we meet them at the airport?

At that time, it was still about 1 a.m. CT and the team’s flight home from Memphis wouldn’t be in for a few more hours. Still, Thunder fans persisted. They were resilient with their support. Kind of like the team.

I did some checking and got the team’s arrival time and passed it along on Twitter. That arrival time — 3:30 a.m. That didn’t stop roughly 40-50 Thunder fans from still showing up and welcoming the team back early Tuesday morning. That’s impressive, insane and a whole lot of other things but most of all, just shows you how dedicated and committed to these guys Thunder fans are. People love this team. It’s just… real.

Every player sort of hobbled over to the chainlink fence that separates the runway and parking lot and high-fived each and every fan. Kendrick Perkins even said according to one person there, “We are going to bring a title home to you,” as he grinned ear to ear. Win it on the road and there will be quite the crowd there to greet you I’m sure.

Here’s a fan video too.

justin :I forget whose idea it was but I’m thinking a Nate Robinson for Mehmet Okur trade in the offseason could be beneficial.

I forget who said it, but i joined in the discussion and said it would be good to trade Nate for either him or Peja(if Peja signs to another team because we couldn't match a deal due to Robbisons contract. Then i went off about how we should sign Peja.

@Daniel Plainview
Maynor's an RFA after next season, same year NateRob's contract expires, so whether we bring Maynor back or not is irrelevant.

Provided Maynor stays. Is his contract up?

I want to get another SG to replace Thabo.

westbrook getting killed by the media today. 40 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks...3 OT or not, since when is that a bad game? oh yeah, I forgot. If he took 10 shots, durant would have gone for 70.

I love the retro uniforms, but the name wizards just looks wrong on them.

Jesus, everyone's talking about Westbrook, Brooks, and OKC's late game offense. In addition to Pelton and Pruiti, we've had more takes from Lowe, Shoals, Hollinger, Sharp...

Thats what i was going to say, but you beat me to it

Yea Crawford looks POed, must think the horizontal stripes make him look fat or something.

I'm not really digging the red, white and blue wizard logo though.

eh, usually misses the first 30 due to injury anyway.

Has anyone else heard the rumor that Bynum will be suspended the first 20 games of next season?

@Heysloth
Tired wings will short their J's, drive less, be less physical. I'm not too concerned, but it is something to watch for if Conley just starts burning RW, especially towards the end of the game, or if KD is having even more difficulty than normal shedding Allen.

From your response on the Bolts. I just figured that the big guys would be more effected by heavy minutes than our young wing players. Guess it could effect a jump shot just as much though. Hoping we come out strong in game 5 like we did in game 2, and I was just looking for any advantage we might have.

Redsooner :
I’m not sure I believe this, Perkins never smiles

I didn't recognize him at first since I'm so used to seeing him scowl. But like I said in a thread before this, he was the biggest player to come to the fence, so it became obvious that it was perk! lol okay and his voice gave it away too.

I almost went last night, defiantly gonna go if we manage to win again in Memphis on Friday night.

Think if they come home with the victory after Game 6.. (assuming we win Game 5). It'll be EPIC.

As another person who was there at 3:30. I can also confirm that Perk said what he did. It was pretty cool, because Perk lingered there for quite some time and then made that comment as he was leaving. You could tell he really enjoyed seeing this group of fans there. It felt great to see them and cheer them on when they first got "home".

He did indeed say it. Just for another confirmation. It was really awesome seeing the players like that. It was one of the coolest things I've been a part of since the Thunder have been here.

He said that. I will put my life savings that he told us that. I love how the fans came over to us and it was an experience like no other. Few pics on my twitter page if anyone is curious.
