Former Thunderer Desmond Mason is in a Chris Kattan movie

So this is what happens when you finish a 10-year NBA career and then become an artist living in Oklahoma. You start getting roles in Chris Kattan movies.

Former Oklahoma State star and inaugural Thunder player Desmond Mason is going to be in some movie called “Just Crazy Enough,” which is about two twins separated at birth and one is a mental patient and the other is a psychiatrist. How wacky!

Mason is playing a mental patient in an asylum and he only speaks in cliches, unable to hold a normal conversation with anyone. A former NBA player only speaking in cliches? Scott Brooks is like, “That’s acting? I call that, ‘talking’.”

The movie is being filmed in Oklahoma and Mason says his role is “a pretty big part,” according to the Tulsa World.

So why is Desmond Mason in this movie, if we’re OK calling it that? How did he get involved? The World explains.

Mason, who moonlighted as an artist during his 10-year NBA career, was asked to design an award for the deadCENTER Film Festival in Oklahoma City.

The festival’s executive director, Lance McDaniel, is a filmmaker whose most eye-catching credit is working as an assistant on “Million Dollar Baby,” which won an Oscar for Best Picture in 2004.

McDaniel, who is directing “Just Crazy Enough” and is sharing writer/producer duties with Sean Lynch, called Mason and made a pitch that went something like this: “I’ve got a spot in a movie. We think you would really fit. I’m sending you the script.”

And that’s how a former hoops star (Mason helped OSU to an Elite Eight appearance in 2000) graduated from artist to performance artist.

I have to wonder, if there were looking for a player than can act, why didn’t they go with Chris Paul, amirite?

Mason is one of my favorite players ever and having him as the Token Okie for a season was a pretty nice treat in the Thunder’s first year. I guess I’m happy for him and that he’s in this movie, though I’m not necessarily sure this is going to be the beginning of a great acting career or anything. I mean, what’s the way up from here? Graduating to a Rob Schneider movie?

The director is Lance McDaniel and filming started July 1. As McDaniel says, it’s a family friendly movie and he wanted to make a movie that’s “appealing to everyone, from toddlers to grandparents, and by doing so, we believe we can increase our marketability.” Having Desmond Mason sure doesn’t hurt either, knowamsayin’. (I don’t know what I’m saying.)

Here’s the film’s website, which I think might’ve been designed in 1999. I’m sure Dan Gilbert approves of the font selection. I’m pro-Oklahoma though, so here’s to this bad boy taking home a couple Oscars next year. If “Avatar” can get nominated, why not “Just Crazy Enough”?

For what it's worth, this movie is being done by the film and video department at OCCC. Representing Oklahoma City, baby. A guy I actually worked with at OCCC is Chris Kattan's body double.

@ Royce Young
For some reason I thought there was an arm injury that messed up his shooting, caused that hitch in his shot and he couldn't fix it. Could be wrong though.

Nate should try out. He is not getting any PT in OKC.

That website was depressing. I watched the promo video and almost felt shame .

I like how the title of their movie is slightly blurred on the website. That's SO crazy!!!

I hope they are better at producing movies than they are at creating websites. What a POS embarassment of a website for a movie.

At first I read this as "Former Thunderer Desmond Mason is in a Chris Kaman movie". I was then disappointed when it wasn't about cavemen, but then the whole crazy/psychiatrist thing made sense. It wasn't until halfway through this article that it occurred to me this we were talking about Chris Kattan.

The only conclusion I can come to is that Chris Kattan and Chris Kaman need to be in a movie together about crazy psychiatric brothers. With zombies. And probably ninjas.

Durant should only be in the dunk contest if he gets to use Brendan Haywood as a "prop". That was the nastiest dunk I've seen out of him in a long time.

I wonder if next season we'll get to see more of "attack the rim" Durant again.

KD still wants to play dunk contest.

I saw Chris Kattan at the Deep Deuce Wedge on the 4th of July. He was making out with some girl and literally motor boated her in the middle of the restaurant. They left for a while when the downtown fireworks were going off, but I don't think they were watching them. Wink wink. I probably should send this to the Lost Ogle, but I'm too lazy.

@ justin
Amen to that. What's odd to me is that he almost seemed MORE skilled in college than he did in the NBA. His jumper went to crap, he quit attacking off the dribble and basically just committed himself to a hard-working wing defender that could dunk.

Sort of a wasted talent, I think.

Mason is one of those players who was really frustrating. He relied solely on his athleticism. He would have been something if he could fix his jump shot, but it never happened. He lost a step prematurely, and was awful by the time he got to New Orleans / Oklahoma City. In in the end, with his other interests, I don't think basketball mattered very much to him.

I remember the first time I ever saw Desmond play. OSU was up big and at the end of the game. Desmond got on a break away and tried a 360 dunk. Unfortunately he missed it (he had the lift he just couldn't get the ball through the cylinder). Even with the miss it was one of those dunk attempts that was still pretty impressive. He was a pretty exceptional athlete.

I saw them filming this movie at Crest at SW 104th and May last Friday. Chris Kattan walked outside right up next to me so I took his picture. He's giving me the stare of death in it. If I knew how I'd post the pic. It's funny.
