TGR 57: The Root of All Evil – NBA Lockout Edition

by Thunderground Radio on July 3, 2011 at 2:47 pm 16 Comments

OK, that may be a little harsh but still…in this week’s episode the guys from TGR review Presti’s recent moves, make their predictions about this year’s stock of rookies, and outline the real loser’s in the lockout.

Key Questions:

  • Does re-signing Nazr stunt Aldrich’s development?
  • Do any of the moves made by teams in the Northwest Division mean more competition for the Thunder?
  • Five years from now, who will be the consensus five best players from the 2011 draft?
  • Will the lockout result in a loss of games or even an entire season? If so, what will the fallout look like?

Download, listen and comment.

I actually don't think Jackson is competing with Maynor. I think if he can play he'll get more time at the 2. Maynor definitely has his moments and is a good change of pace to Westbrook. I think it's good for Westbrook to see the success we have moving the ball when he's in. I think he's more of a threat to Thabo/Cooks time than Maynors.

Thats obvious he has 2 years left. Ofcourse they are going to try and get as much as possible in trade before he can walk.

That option was for the 12-13 season not next season. Maynor will be traded before his contract expires IMO. Reggie Jackson playing well will just expedite that process.

Umm they picked up option and did not trade him which was the bogus rumor I knew it was. You should know you were forefront:)

Eric Maynor's style doesn't fit what this team needs in the long term, with the lack of front court offense the team is going to have. No, the Thunder might not give Reggie Jackson an opportunity early on, but a player with his skill set fits our needs much better. Claiming that Maynor got the Thunder the only win against Dallas is a disservice to James Harden. Maynor was a deer in headlights the whole fourth quarter and it would have been a loss if not for other guys' heroics... we weren't so lucky in game five.

I dont know what season your were watching but he played solid all year and got us our only win vs the Mavs. What PG didnt have problems vs Barea? Exactly. Thunder are not going to let a unproven rookie take over a solid 2-3year backup PG. Not next year. When Maynor leaves he might if hes good enough.

The Thunder are contenders and can't rely on a young player like Aldrich who failed to earn minutes on a team that really needed some brawn early in the season. I think Nazr being on board actually helps his growth. Nazr barely played his first (and second) years as well, and he's a well of experience at the position. Really, I'm not sure Aldrich could find a better situation for his development considering the strength of Tulsa and the two veterans at his position on OKC. He just might not have what it takes.

I think Reggie Jackson has OK odds of being better than Eric Maynor for the Thunder, especially with the way the PF / C positions are shaping up for the long term. We saw flashes of Eric Maynor's limitations in the playoffs, especially athletically on defense against the Denver guards and later JJ Barea. Combined with the fact that Maynor has yet to experience a season or Playoffs with a TS% over .500, the team might be better served with a more explosive, athletic option at the position in the long run. The thought of Reggie Jackson and his physical gifts panning out and leading to a guard rotation of Westbrook / Harden / Jackson sounds very formidable as all three could handle, score, and have the tools to defend all comers. We'll see what happens.

I agree with all your points. I liked Williams 2, Faried, Harper to be the better guys out of the draft. I think Rubio will have a better start then Jimmer playing PG.

james1 :I was a little disappointed they didn’t talk about Reggie Jackson more. They basically said players drafted in the 20′s pretty much always stink when that’s definitely not been the case. Over the past 5 years there have been a ton of good players taken in the 20′s.

okc baby :Maynor was drafted at 20 and he played a solid role as a rookie backup. I dont think you have to be drafted early to be a good nba player.

There are definitely quality players to be picked up in the draft past the lottery (specifically the 20 spot). But it really does become a crap shoot. I just looked over the 50 odd players that were taken from the 20-29 spot over the last 5 years (06-10). I counted 7-13 that would possibly get rotation minutes for the Thunder (some certain's like Rondo, Ibaka, Maynor, Cook, Darren Collison)... 7-13 out of 50 isn't exactly a ton. Now, to be fair, 3 of those 7-13 are getting rotation minutes for the Thunder (Ibaka, Maynor, and Cook). But to me that speaks more to the quality of scouting and trading the front office of our team does rather then the level of quality you can get in the 20's. For the most part, guys picked in the 20's don't have impactful careers, that's more what we were saying.

Not sure what more could be said about Reggie Jackson at this point. The guy was drafted to a championship caliber team and is in all likelihood 3rd on the depth chart at both positions he could play for us. Until we see him play it'll be hard to say what kind of impact the kid will make. I definitely like what the scouts have said about him for the most part.

Rock paper scissors. hahaha Depending how much Reggie develops over the summer. Probably will have a better chance seeing him play along side Maynor. I am glad we signed Nazr not counting on Aldrich to be ready. Has the season started yet.
