Kendrick Perkins arrested in hometown of Beaumont, Texas

by Royce Young on August 13, 2011 at 12:02 pm 25 Comments

UPDATE: Via the AP: “A statement from police in Beaumont, Texas, said officers saw a large crowd outside The Ticket night club just after 2 a.m., and received complaints of fights and pepper spray inside. An officer saw about 50 people inside around Perkins, who police said was attempting to fight the club’s manager. The statement said the crowd pushed Perkins out the back door of the club, where he continued to yell obscenities and start other fights.”

According to KFDM in Texas, Kendrick Perkins was arrested in his hometown of Beaumont, TX early Saturday morning. He was booked at about 4:00 a.m. on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Perkins posted bond of $150 and were shortly released. (An initial report had Stephen Jackson arrested with Perk, but that has now been changed.)

So, what happened? According to MediaTakeoutOut.com‘s ridiculous account (which is always shady), Perkins, along with Stephen Jackson and potentially Rajon Rondo, all were involved in some kind of altercation outside of a Beaumont club. The group, along with Eric Maynor, James Harden and Kevin Durant, were all to be in town for Perkins’ basketball camp and celebrity game. However, the celebrity game was cancelled after Perkins reportedly had an incident in Jackson’s Port Arthur home late Thursday.

According to reports, a “27-year-old male” was taken from Jackson’s home via ambulance to a hospital (Perkins is a 27-year-old male). He was treated for “minor injuries” and released. A spokesman for Perkins said that the Thunder center was suffering from dehydration and was told to rest.

All the details are very sketchy and there’s no real known facts at this point, but here’s what we know: Perkins was arrested. For what exactly, isn’t known. Fighting? Being loud? Being drunk? Getting tangled up with someone, scowling nastily and then going forehead-to-forehead with them? Who knows. Regardless, for the Oklahoma City Thunder, this is the first black eye the squeaky clean franchise has taken. The worst thing before this? Probably either Nate Robinson peeing in public or Nenad Krstic chucking at chair at someone. Or just Robert Swift’s presence on the roster. Hard to really decide.

Hey, a first for everything, right you guys?

Obviously there can’t be any discipline, at least not right now, because the players are locked out. Lucky you, Perk.

But once the players return, I’m curious as to if general manager Sam Presti will take any action on it. Like I said, the Thunder are run as a very clean-cut, no nonsense type of franchise. The idea is to give a conservative community a high character team to root for. So clearly, this isn’t going to be something the Thunder are happy about.

In reality, this isn’t a serious infraction. Perk got drunk and probably made a little scene outside of a bar in his hometown. But it is something, which is already one more incident than the Thunder were hoping for this summer.

Sounds blown out of proportion to me. There are speeding tickets that carry a heavier fine.

SergeIblocka :@ justin So would you agree with assessments made by other NBA writers that Ibaka’s offense game has grown immensely since his outing in the WCF?

I don't think it really has, but Spain's team makes him look a lot better since they move the ball around so well. He's mostly scoring on an array of jump shots. I think his awareness is improving on a team like that, which is important.

$150.00 to get out? Sounds like a run of the mill trip to the drunk tank. Also, I wouldn't worry about his "intoxication." All it takes is a cop smelling beer on your breath to get that listed on the arrest report. If he'd actually blown drunk we'd have heard the blood alcohol level number by now.

Don't worry about Perk. But I will say, I think the longer this lockout lasts, the less structure these guys have in their lives, the more stories like this you'll hear.

To do some or all that is alleged on a weekend that was intended to showcase you as a citizen or model citizen makes it more surprising and harder to understand or brush off.

Presti and the Thunder did virtually nothing in public response to the other incidents. Robinson's was minor, Krstic's I wouldn't call minor. What they do in private might be more important but that is debatable in a sport where public opinion matters and public leadership is asserted as a community benefit of the sport & team.

Hometown cops can be tougher or more lenient in filing charges. They may have gone lenient.

I think it is not serious because Perk only paid $150 for freedom.Strauss-Kahn paid $1M

But sketchy details from sketchy media, I'll wait to hear more, not that I want to hear more about it or any off the court stuff really. Only as it might affect what happens on the court for me.

If guns were involved this is on another level and not just for Perkins if other Thunder were on the same scene.

This isn't just one spur of the moment mistake. This sounds like a 3 or 4 things in a row, I don't give a f tear. Easier to do that after you got your last big contract. Early. With no competitive bids.

Ibaka was good until the 4th when Valanciunas did some damage against him.

Ibaka is playing really well.

If this incident had happened last offseason Darnell would have had a 'prospective trade target' article that claimed Kendrick Perkins lacked 'Thunder DNA'.

Anyone watching Spain-Lithuania? Ibaka made a nice pass to a cutting Rubio a little while ago and hit a transition jump shot earlier.

Just because they say he was intoxicated doesn't mean he was. Might of had a couple drinks and a couple police are trying to make a name for themselves.Atleast he wasn't driving. He's still a kid,and we all make mistakes.I'm still glad to have him in the THUNDER UNIFORM.

Perkins really better come into next season in shape and ready to make an impact. He was bad last year and now his image is going to take a hit. This is a Michael Beasley type of knuckle head incident that this team doesn't need from one of its leaders.

KD is the real leader of this team. Everyone knows that and Collison is much more like to be the mature voice on the team. Nevertheless, this one incident does not cancel out what Perk brings to the table. Nevertheless, let the Perk haters come out of the wood work. If only we had Tyson Chandler, he would never get arrested.

Perks' words about being a leader and making sure everyone is doing the right things this offseason seem a bit hollow now.
