Film Study: The Thunder’s new crunchtime set

by Royce Young on December 29, 2011 at 1:22 pm 35 Comments

Lost in all this Russell Westbrook noise was that the Thunder did just enough in the last four minutes against Memphis to hold on for a really nice win. Which if you recall, was something of a chore during the playoffs last season.

In both the Dallas and Memphis series, Oklahoma City’s halfcourt sets basically devolved into Westbrook trying to force a pass to Kevin Durant while KD held off Shawn Marion for 18 seconds and then after that inevitably failed, Westbrook trying to create something on his own.

In the past, the Thunder have primarily run two sets: 1) Westbrook and Durant in a screen-and-roll/slip play on the wing and 2) KD isolating at the top of the key with Westbrook trying to feed the ball so KD can go one-on-one with his man.

In conclusion, didn’t work so great. The has been a lot of pressure on Scott Brooks and his staff to get more creative with his two stars and figure out what to do in those later stages. You want KD with the ball and taking the shot, but it’s complicated. There’s a reason Westbrook was forced to go rogue so much. You don’t think Brooks wanted KD taking those shots? Thing is, he’s got to get it in an area he can score and he’s got to get it somewhere we he doesn’t have to dribble a lot to get his own shot.

So against the Grizzlies with the game getting tight, the Thunder broke out a new little set and ran it three straight times with pretty successful results.

The play starts simple enough. Westbrook drops it to Harden, which initializes the motion, with Durant hovering by Perk. By all appearances, the Thunder are going to run KD baseline off a double screen and have Harden feed him either in the post or off a curl.

Instead, OKC does something interesting. Russell Westbrook sets the screen for Durant. A twist. Harden, a great passer, is there to feed the ball to Durant, which is better than Westbrook doing it. And on top of it, with Harden on the wing, it sets up a possibility for a screen-and-roll with Harden, which is something OKC likes to do.

Now look where KD’s got the ball. He could’ve taken a jumper right there (Westbrook’s screens were really good, actually), but he’s got the ball at the free throw line one-on-one with Rudy Gay. That’s a spot where KD is lethal. The first time, Durant crossed him and scored on a runner. Next time, the defense collapsed to double and he kicked out to a wide open Serge Ibaka who missed a make-able jumper. Third time, Durant hit a ridiculous fadeaway over Gay.

What this set is contingent on is KD doing ridiculous things. Luckily, he’s entirely capable of it. That’s what you want in a go-to finisher. A guy that when he gets the ball in a spot, he can finish. I’ve often wondered why the Thunder didn’t have something like the Celtics do when they get the ball to Paul Pierce isolated on the elbow. Well, here it is.

Defenses will adjust to this. They’ll collapse, run defenders at KD or he’ll just miss. But as you can see with the spacing, he’s got options. He can kick to Ibaka. He can hit a cutting Westbrook. He can swing it back to Harden. The spacing is there and Durant’s got the ball in a good working area. It’s essentially the same idea as the top of the key iso, except instead of KD trying to hold off a defender pushing on him (which he doesn’t do well, as he always gets moved out), Durant gets a catch with a little breathing room.

Kudos to Scott Brooks and his staff for this one. Simple, quality set that gets the ball to Kevin Durant, which is always a good play.

Perfect offense for OKC. Give your best player the ball at the free throw line and let him make plays. Its what Dallas has run with Dirk and samething Clevland ran with LeBron.

Nice job with this Royce. I'm glad Scott Brooks and company weren't sitting around twiddling their thumbs during the lockout.

This was a good analysis, Royce. I think it makes so much more sense for Westbrook to set the screens for Durant than Harden because he seems like he's the stronger one of the two. Harden, being a better ball handler opens up so many more options and spaces the floor better with his distance shot. Also, I like KD isolating around the elbow or free-throw line instead of the top of the key because his shot is almost automatic around 15-18 feet, but when you step back behind the 3-point line, we've seen too many times where KD retreats back (sorta like Tebow when defenses rush more than 3 guys at him) and is forced to bomb away from 25-30 feet, which is obviously not what we want.

also, I would like to see Collison in the game during crunch time again, he seems like a more reliable option than Ibaka since he is a much better playmaker. And Collison and Harden have this amazing chemistry when they play the two-man game together.

@supreethm92 please dont ever compare kevin durant to tim tebow.... daily thunder is my only refuge from 24/7 tebow coverage

@yunghawg i'm sorry. I'm an absolute Tebow hater after the 2008 National Championship with OU, but I was just making a comparison to something bad so that everybody realizes how bad I thought those isolations were last year.

Awesome analysis Royce. I will be a lot less "we are screwed" feeling when we need a 4th quarter play

Still extremely simplistic, and needs a second option for if Harden gets jammed, but I do appreciate that Brooks is moving in the right direction.

Any set play with all three of Westbrook/Durant/Harden involved will be better, in principle, than our usual crunch time offense.

@[censored] You mean any set play involving 3 players is better then 1 on 1 crunch time offense.

Everyone seems to think that the Mavs are gonna be an easy win tonight. I was actually more worried about tonight's game than last night's. This will be our 4th game in 5 nights, and the Mavs have had 2 days rest. Plus, the pressure is on them after an 0-2 start with both losses being blowouts and the media going crazy about it. Not to mention that they probably want to prove something to the up and comers and new West favorites. Probably some old-man pride will kick in and they'll want to show everyone that they are still the champs. That said, I still think we'll win tonight. :D

Nice clips Royce! I would like to see a few more off ball screens but this a start. Once they develop 3-4 different plays, this will be nice to look for. I like how they closed it out last night. I wish tonight was more of a test but with the way Dallas is playing it should be cruise city.

Did anyone else notice the corner 3 Collison set up for Durant during the fourth. You could clearly see the two of them talking through the play as they were jogging up court, pretty cool moment I thought.

Nice set, now they need a couple of options off of it, too. Perkins pinning his defender high if the defender tries to help on Durant, Russell curling off a double pick by Perkins and Durant for a feed into the post, Ibaka running a back pick for Harden if players get caught in the wash, or Durant popping out to 3 point line if his defender ducks way under the screen. Those are some simple plays off this one play to get Durant the ball at the free throw line. Wow, I should be a coach! LOL

The best part about it all is that we're seeing Brooks come up with new offensive plays. There may yet be hope for him

I like this play. It takes two things to work; 1) a good screen on the baseline (kudos to Russ) and 2) a mid-range threat. The defense may collapse on KD and force him to make that pass to Serge, but Serge can hit that shot. If I were the defense, I'd rather Serge take that shot than KD, but it's still a choice, and after he hits one or two of those you might see the defender hesitate and get caught in no man's land.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct also. lob to russ is an option out of this set

Jax Raging Bile Duct

@Thunder S Maybe so. If you could find a way to get whoever is defending our 5 to follow him out of the paint. The only way it would work is that if our 5 left the paint to go to the side of the floor opposite Serge (so he doesn't crowd the spacing) setting a back-pick for Russ. That might work with young centers, but I bet you most veterans will just hedge that back pick and let our 5 float out of the paint unguarded as none of our 5's are really a threat from midrange.

Been calling for this for two years. This is very similar to what Dallas does for Dirk. Put him at the top of the key so they can't double him. Let him create on his own. When he begins to improve on those Dirk-like fadeaways his game will go to a whole new level.
