Thunder to play the Magic in OKC on Christmas

by Royce Young on December 1, 2011 at 4:15 pm 36 Comments

UPDATE: It’s official, the Thunder will take on Orlando in Oklahoma Christmas Day at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.

The official NBA revised schedule won’t be released until next week probably, but the opening day slate of games on Christmas are becoming a bit more firm. We already know about the Celtics and Knicks, Heat and Mavericks, and Bulls and Lakers. There’s a report saying the last game of the day would be the Clippers at the Warriors.

After some speculation that the Thunder would play the Grizzlies, according to Zach McCann formerly of the Orlando Sentinel, Oklahoma City will host the Magic.

Unconfirmed and I’ve heard the league will make an announcement regarding Christmas games as early as tomorrow, but there you go. Don’t make plans just yet, because sometimes, things change. No idea whether it would be the 4 p.m. CT game or 7 p.m. game. But I would say the chances of OKC playing on Christmas are very high.

Would be a good test for back-to-strong? Perk if Dwight is still in Orlando, otherwise, might be a pretty lopsided game like the one they had on us mid-trade last year.

It was exciting to hear Durant say he is staying in OKC until we don't want him anymore. Looks like he'll be here forever.

@Lambchop We need to get this done as soon as possible.

Dwight Howard's monster ego would not allow him to play in OKC. He wants to go to LA to follow in the footsteps of Shaq and become a Laker. Presti will lock up Westbrook faster than you can even think, we will over pay for him slightly but his ceiling has yet to be reached.

Dwight's already made it known he wants to play for a big market team if he doesn't stay with the Magic. So if he gets a sign and trade or enter free agency I'm pretty sure OKC will not be on his radar. We should probably just focus on the talent we already have. Perkins seems to have recovered his form over the offseason so if he performs at the level he used to we'll have decent production from the 5 spot. I'm more intrigued though with Serge Ibaka's potential. He's improved continuously and he's got the tools to be a much more potent offensive option since he can shoot a midrange J and also finish at the rim with his monstrous jams. If the Thunder develop his offense more and then design some plays for him (pick & roll/pop) I can see Ibaka being a 12-15ppg kind of guy easy. That'll give us more options and create more opportunities for KD and the others. @C-Wil

I'm not hugely optimistic about Ibaka's offensive potential because of his stone hands. Defensively, though, he could be one of the greats - he just needs to be more refined.

I know I am in the minority or even third party on this - but I like Thabo outright just how we use him now. I just wish he would remain committed to defense while he tried to at leats pretend to be in a bit on offense, maybe make a few shots. He does great shooting pregame, it just needs to be more spontaneous shooting against real defense when he practices maybe, instead of those slow deliberate set shots he practices at so much.

I do agree that Ibaka should prioritize defense over offense but during the playoffs against the Mavs I couldn't help but notice on offense that the Thunder were bust if KD couldn't get to his sweet spots (Marion physically pushing him out to the perimeter) or if Russell's penetration got nullified because of a clogged up paint. The reason the Mavs D worked was because they didn't have to take Ibaka, Perkins and Sefalosha seriously on offense. If Ibaka can develop and reliably knock down that J in the future at say, LaMarcus Aldridge's level, and Harden gets swapped in for Sefalosha, it'll really help with spacing which is key for utilizing KD and Russell.@Keith00 @Jax Raging Bile Duct

@Jax Raging Bile Duct I would be ecstatic if it does. But for the time being I would rather him work on defensive footwork in the post and reading shots to contest rather than foul or fly by on a fake.

@Keith00 Agreed on his offensive potential. I am holding out hope though that his mid-range jumper becomes more consistent. I see nothing about his mechanics that makes me think he can't get there. A pick and pop threat is still a threat. And I guess you never know, his roll game could come around a little bit.

I do not want to part with Westbrook, but, if during these negotiations he reveals he would like to go elsewhere, how about him and Perk for Dwight and Justin Harper?

We'd probably have to send one of Ibaka / Harden to get Dwight, especially if we're not taking back Hedo or Arenas...

I think Westbrook will sign an extension, and it will be max or near max. It will be somewhat of a gamble, but I'm not sure what other options there are for a team like OKC. You don't let your star players just walk away. We'll just have to hope that Russ continues to hit the high side of his development curve.

The big issue will be if Westbrook refuses to sign an extension and waits until next offseason, assuming he'll make an All Star team and be eligible for the larger, 'elite player' contract. That could easily turn into a distraction during the season and then you're not even assured that Westbrook will return - and I would not give him the big 30% contract anyway.

Even if you think about it, who can you trade Westbrook for aside from Dwight and be assured of a better situation? Even if you trade Westbrook for an extended Chris Paul, you're risking everything on his knees and paying him more than Westbrook will get. My guess is overwhelming that Westbrook will stay, get a contrac that's a little more than he deserves right now, and we hope that he continues to get better so he can earn it.

KD35Russ0

@[censored] The All Star option is open for Russ I don't think. It's two all star STARTS. So he would have to make All Pro again to get the 30% which is pretty risky if he waits for it. I think he'll take the guaranteed money now.

@KD35Russ0 Russ has to make the All-NBA 1st, 2nd or 3rd team to be eligible for a max contract next Summer. He was All-NBA 2nd team last year. Assuming Rose gets 1st team again next year, Russ will have to once again finish ahead of guys like Deron Williams and Chris Paul to make 2nd or 3rd team. Is it worth the gamble for him to wait to sign until next Summer? We'll find out in about 8 days.

@[censored] Im not sold Paul is gonna be healthy in two years. After all, didnt he get the same surgery that has obliterated Roys knees? If we traded RW for Dwight, I would not put Harden in that Deal. To me, Hardens skillset, youth and ceiling would be extremly hard to replace. WHile we will not get another RW, serviceable ball distributors are more plentiful and sufficent, especially if we had Dwight and KD. If RW doesnt sign an extention this season, were presented with teh Melo scenario and must trade him

TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard
TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard 5pts

@Lambchop @[censored] not the same surgery. Mensicus surgery, especially for a partial tear, is one of the most simplistic surgeries you can have, and basically consists of going in, cleaning out the tear or loose body, and a 2-4 week recovery. The only usual complication with Paul's ype is sometimes early onset arthritic type symptoms. However, Roy's surgery is a full transplant of his meniscus, which had never been done on an active pro player before.

So basically, I have 10000% more confidence in Paul's knees than Roy's, although I wouldn't say I'm 100% on Paul's either.

@Lambchop Good point. Seems like Paul couldn't get away with making demands the way Melo did. Probably lot less teams interested. Words is the Celts are already backing away based on the knee.

Old Man Game

@[censored] I think you're right. Russ is the type of player that's probably going to get overpaid a bit. I doubt he could carry a team to the playoffs by himself but he's too good to easily replace so we'll end up paying him a lot and hope for the best.

@Lambchop Nah. I bet Russ stays.

zsspanther

@Lambchop No way Russ says that he wants to go elsewhere, and no way Howard would agree to signing an extension to play in OKC. Give Westbrook the money he wants and move on. I don't see any other possible outcome.

@zsspanther As of today, while Im certain he loves this team, Im not convinced he wants to be the no 2 offensive option. Im not convinced he wouldnt like to gowere he gonna be the number 1
