Westbrook and Durant have altercation, had to be separated

by Royce Young on December 28, 2011 at 11:49 pm 104 Comments

Rocky Widner/NBAE/Getty Images

Hold on to your butts. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook got mad at each other Wednesday.

Westbrook labored through maybe the worst game of his career Wednesday night in Memphis going 0-13 from the floor for just four points. But maybe there was a reason for it.

According to Darnell Mayberry of the Oklahoman, Westbrook had a second quarter confrontation with Kevin Durant that led to the two having to be separated on the bench.

Westbrook’s frustration appeared to have started with just 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the second quarter when he drove into the paint and kicked the ball out to Thabo Sefolosha in the corner. Sefolosha passed up a wide open 3-pointer, which prompted Westbrook to yell at Sefolosha “shoot the (expletive) ball.”

Sefolosha and other teammates, including Durant and center Kendrick Perkins attempted to calm Westbrook down immediately during an ensuing trip to the free throw line. But the emotions spilled over to the bench one minute later.

Durant appeared to again settle Westbrook, but Westbrook appeared to take exception to how Durant delivered his message. The two began shouting at each other and had to be separated.

Throughout the rest of the game Durant and Westbrook appeared to communicate well after the dust-up, giving high-fives and with Durant patting Westbrook on the head.

“We’re going to disagree sometimes, like I’ve always been saying,” Durant said after the game. “But I’m behind him 110 percent, and he’s the same way with me. And you seen when we came on the floor we clicked and everything started to work from there.”

Westbrook didn’t speak to reporters following the game, but before you get too excited about that, realize that it’s routine for Westbrook to skip out of the locker room quickly. Even after really good games.

Durant has tried to dispel every story and rumor about an issue between him and Westbrook saying that the 23-year-old point guard is “the only point guard for him” and different things like that. Durant has maintained quite often that Westbrook and him have disagreed quite a bit at times but that’s just the nature of being teammates.

Westbrook is a very emotional player that has admitted that’s an area he wants to improve in. He reacts, yells and gets very frustrated at times. It’s just who he is as a player. It’s what makes him great, and sometimes not so great. And Durant, as the leader of the Thunder, has to take it upon himself to calm Westbrook down, which sometimes results in a reaction. Which is what happened Wednesday.

Following the game, NBA TV spoke with Durant who reinforced his good relationship with Westbrook.

“Russell makes me so much better,” Durant said. “A lot of people may say this and that about our relationship, but we always try to get better, we’re always the first two guys in the gym, we always bounce ideas off each other too.”

There’s a hotter and brighter spotlight on the two though because of the mumblings that originated in the playoffs last season. Every time something like this happens, people will use it as a lightning rod to illustrate how the two are the next Kobe and Shaq. It’s not really true at all, but it makes for a great story.

Look, I’ve been in Oklahoma City’s locker room a lot. I’ve watched practices. These guys get along really well, but they’re all competitive and they get mad or frustrated sometimes with each other. It happens. You probably have gotten mad at your buddy playing pickup on a Saturday morning. You just didn’t have a fanbase and media ready to pounce on it to drum up some juicy, divisive story.

But the facts are that Westbrook and Durant got into it Wednesday at Memphis. Definitely wasn’t the first time and probably won’t be the last.

Now ESPN only has the 'feud' article as a link. Isn't nice that half the people don't even care that THEY WON THE DAMN GAME!!!

Westbrook is becoming a loose cannon. He whines so much on the court to the refs. He will never get a call when he acts like that. If he continues to be a distraction. Trade him for DH. Blame Thabo:) because you are playing like garbage. Just because you shoot all the dang time doesnt me everyone has to.

I'm watching ESPN. Skip Bayless is an idiot. He's talking about Russ' ego. Seriously? I've worked in broadcasting for 35 years. The very LAST people who have a right to gripe about other people's ego is on-air talent. LOL

To be fair, Tebow has lost his last two games, so what else is he going to talk about?

Poor Russ. He shoots and gets ripped by everyone. He passes to Thabo and he still ends up getting roasted. I sure hope he doesn't pay much attention to the media.

Except for Jalen Rose and Doug Gottlieb. Finally, (on Mike and Mike) they talked about how it's not a big deal. Very intelligent conversation between the two.

@yehoshuagardner I wonder what the argument between Russ and KD was really about. Was KD saying, "Settle down" and Russ saying, "Dude, you ought to be getting onto THABO, not me!"?

I sympathize with Russ. The only time I ever get mad playing basketball is when I make a good pass and my teammate hesitates to take the shot.

Why was this not reported by other media at the game ?

Did they not see this ? Or did they see it and decided it was just normal things players do and let it go and did not see it worthy of reporting ?

If we had already not been inundated with this " KD and Russ don't get along thing " , nobody would care what they said to each other on the bench.

I'm not saying I would do it, but if Boston offered Rondo for Westbrook, and this KD-Westbrook thing continues to be a distraction, if I were Presti, I would have to think long and hard about it.

Rondo is in the 2nd year of a very reasonable contract (not even close to max money), he's best friends with Perk, he's a pass-first point guard and would be a great fit with KD. His only obvious weakness is shooting ability, but Russ isn't exactly the best shooter either.

When he's being aggressive, Rondo's one of the best in the game. So far in three games this season, Rondo is averaging 22 points, 10.3 assists and 5 rebounds!

Obviously, I would want something more from Boston than just Rondo (maybe a 1st round pick too), but I could see Rondo fitting in nicely with our group.

westbrook is significantly better than rondo. Russ is fine the way he is, are we not 3-0 and boston 0-2? there are 4 players in the league worth trading russ for chris paul, deron williams, blake griffin and dwight howard.

anonymous12345
anonymous12345 5pts

@f5alcon

Exactly. Personally I couldn't care less about how KD and Russ feel about one another as long as they're winning. There is no reason to trade away an all-star when you're one of the favorites to come out of the west.

yehoshuagardner
yehoshuagardner 5pts

@f5alcon Boston's 0-3. Also, why can't people try and think for a second about having Rondo, Thabo, Ibaka, and Perk on offense all at the same time?

TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard
TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard 5pts

@Old Man Game@yehoshuagardner@f5alcon Rondo is on a team of people who CAN score though. You could put a lineup of Rondo, CP3, Dwill, and Steve Nash on the floor with Thabo every night and he's still not averaging double digits. Will they get easier shots? Probably. But they have to have the capability to make them.

Old Man Game
Old Man Game 5pts

@yehoshuagardner @f5alcon Yeah but Rondo makes scoring easier for everyone else with his passing. Scoring might come easier than you think for that group.

shiki
shiki 5pts

@Daniel Hawaii I hope we can keep Russ, but if we cannot,it is a great deal. The low FT% is the only thing limits Rondo's aggressiveness.Perk's FT% is 79% now which is much better than his career average, maybe Rondo can improve his in OKC.

Presti is a very smart man and I believe he can find the best way

Daniel Hawaii
Daniel Hawaii 5pts

@shiki Yup. Also, think about this: Everyone wants to know how we are going to keep our core together. Well, if we have Rondo signed for only $11 million instead of Westbrook for $17 million, that would help us keep Ibaka and Harden.

shiki
shiki 5pts

@JimboSlice Brooks just needs to start Harden to resolve it

TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard
TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard 5pts

@shiki@Old Man Game@Daniel you can keep Rondo DH. With Rondo instead of Russ imagine how horrific our starting lineup would be. 4 guys who can't shoot the ball outside of the paint, and Durant. No thank you.

shiki
shiki 5pts

@Old Man Game@Daniel The new luxury tax rule hurts us more than elder version. We will pay more to keep our roster. We dont get anything from this lockout but lose something. It is very bad feeling.

Old Man Game
Old Man Game 5pts

@Daniel Hawaii That 11 million is the most persuasive point. I don't think there's any way in hell Russ signs such a reasonable deal. But KD Rondo and Harden would be better than just KD and Russ which may end up being the choice.

Daniel Hawaii
Daniel Hawaii 5pts

And one last thing: Rondo has a ring. He'd bring championship experience to OKC. If you think about it, we'd be like the new, younger Celtics. KD could play the role of Ray Allen, Harden would be Pierce, Ibaka would be Garnett (albeit to a much lesser degree) and Perk would be... well.... Perk! Plus our bench is better than Boston's was during their championship run. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

Daniel Hawaii
Daniel Hawaii 5pts

Also, Boston has started the year off slow and might want to make a big splash to keep its fan base happy, so getting Westbrook might do that. The only problem is Danny Ainge might be a little gun shy after being taken to the woodshed by Presti in the Perk deal.

This trade wouldn't happen until the trading deadline anyway because Presti wouldn't do it unless this KD-Westbrook thing becomes a full-on raging problem. But if the trade does come up at the deadline, I wonder if we could get Boston to throw in Ray Allen too, since he's on the final year of his contract. But the problem there would be the salaries wouldn't match up. Well, just some food for thought...

The_Beard_Knows
The_Beard_Knows 5pts

@Daniel Hawaii Exactly how long do you think it would be before KD-Rondo became a distraction? Trading a hothead for a hothead is not going to fix a problem that doesn't really exist in the first place.

sammasaaron
sammasaaron 5pts

@Daniel Hawaii@The_Beard_Knows Well, there was that big offseason story about how he threw a fit during a film session because he was being critiqued. He may present himself well to the media, but he sounds like a locker room problem to me, particularly on a team like ours.

Daniel Hawaii
Daniel Hawaii 5pts

@The_Beard_Knows Rondo's not a hothead. Where'd you get that from? Anyway, there would be no issue between Rondo and KD because Rondo would actually pass him the ball! And if Rondo gets outta line, Perk would bring him back.

Daniel Hawaii
Daniel Hawaii 5pts

I can understand having a bad shooting night, but I was most angry about Russ getting torched by undrafted journeyman Jeremy Pargo. Russ should've been able to shut him down, but instead he scores 15 with 7 dimes. That was more inexcusable to me than the 0-13.

Maynor was playing so much better than Russ. Why is it so difficult for Scott Brooks to see that a player is struggling and just take him out? Is he afraid of the longterm psychological effects a benching would do to Russ? If we lost this game, I would've put it on Brooks as much as on Russ.

TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard
TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard 5pts

@Daniel Hawaii to be fair to Pargo, the main reason Pargo went undrafted was because he was one of the oldest (or maybe oldest) rookies in the draft. Dude was a monster at Gonzaga.

But I was also bothered by his defensive effort (or lack thereof) more than his offensive output. Bad shooting nights happen. Bad defensive nights shouldn't.

Old Man Game
Old Man Game 5pts

I don't see how this is part of what makes him great. I see his tendency to be a hot head as one of the main things retarding his growth as a player. I mean be passionate about the game and give a shit for sure, but there's got to be a happy medium there.

Not really seeing the connection between the two. For arguments sake, lets say the thunder don't want to give him as much as he wants, what exactly does that have to do with a supposed feud with Durant? Are they not offering him more as a punishment? The Thunder have to know that Westbrook will get a max offer by somebody, so not offering the max is essentially letting him go, which I don't believe they'd do unless it was through a trade. And if thats the case, why wouldn't they have agreed on a trade for CP3? Too many holes in Steins statement imo

Every sports forum I read is going off on Westbrook for this game, calling him a chucker, bringing up the Stringer Bell references, saying that it's the beginning of the end for OKC. It really pisses me off, because there's basically no way in hell Russ is every going to redeem himself in the eyes of the public, now that they've already swallowed wholesale the tripe they've been fed by ESPN. Once the storyline is in place, everything that doesn't support the narrative (Russ and KD high-fiving, KD singing Russ' praises and vice versa) gets conveniently ignored, while everything that can possibly be construed to support the conflict will be twisted beyond all reason.

@deleted_1998213_Don'tStoptheSergeing Don't forget 'trade Westbrook for Rondo'. Nevermind that our offense would be even worse, and that Rondo, for all his vaunted passing ability, would have no one to pass to that can score worth a damn other than KD.

@JBDW I don't see how the offense would be worse with Rondo. He makes everyone better. He is averaging 10.3 assists this year on a team that doesn't even have Pierce right now. I think Rondo would be a great fit and he'd be re-united with his BFF Perk.

@JBDW That's the media in general. It's not "just the facts" it's "here, think this." It's not just sports, but this is where it pisses me off the most.
