Clarifying some confusion on Westbrook’s contract

by Royce Young on January 20, 2012 at 3:36 pm 152 Comments

There has been a bit of confusion about Russell Westbrook’s new extension and whether or not he left money on the table. The confusion stemmed from the new Rose Rule that allows players a 30 percent maximum extension instead of 25 percent by meeting certain criteria including winning an MVP, being voted an All-Star starter twice or making two All-NBA teams.

But I’m told by a source with direct knowledge that Westbrook’s contract would’ve indeed been eligible for the Rose Rule bump if he made another All-NBA team this season, but instead settled for the standard max deal. So all the stuff about Westbrook taking the 25 percent max instead of the 30 percent is correct. In a way, as I wrote yesterday, Westbrook potentially left money on the table. Which could be extremely important to the future of the roster.

The source clarified that Kevin Durant’s retroactive Rose deal had no impact on Westbrook’s Rose eligibility, despite conflicting reports on that subject. Because of the Rose max, Durant will make roughly $3 million more per season and about $15 million more over the life of his five-year contract.

A five-year designated player max contract and the Rose extension are not synonymous things. They are separate. Westbrook was able to get a five-year deal because each team can extend a player for five years under the CBA. And since Durant was extended in the last CBA, Westbrook was eligible to be extended for five years in the new CBA, if that makes sense.

I was just wondering, if we lost Durant to an injury, would Harden or Cook start for him? I would choose Harden, although, I wonder what Scott would do.

Reggie Jackson currently ranks 39th of 41 on winshares per 48 minutes for rookies with 50+ minutes.

but he is still adjusting. i expect better will be coming.

Crow

charles jenkins other pg i liked in the draft along with jackson, is off to a fairly nice start.

@The_Beard_Knows ok, thanks for the report

@Crow I love Jenkins, he was my pick after the Bulls took Mirotic, but I was not especially impressed with how he played in substantial minutes for Golden State. Given Golden State's pace I would have anticipated more ppg and a higher assist%. His play hasn't given me the slightest bit of regret about Reggie.

Crow
Crow 5pts

Thunder is the only top contender without a top 50 rebounder on total rebound %.

Crow
Crow 5pts

at the current rate of use alrdich will end up with not much more than 100 minutes trial for the season. that is not development.

T-Storm
T-Storm 5pts

@Crow I think Scott needs to give Aldrich some more minutes. And not just at the end of the game with a twenty point lead, he needs experience where he has an effect on the game. Nazr is getting old and Aldrich will have to replace him soon. He needs to be ready, and he's not developing at the level we need him to by sitting on the bench.

Crow
Crow 5pts

@T-Storm yeah he should. he probably will give him more later but i am not confident it will be much or enough.

T-Storm
T-Storm 5pts

@Crow While I'm on the subject of our new players, I'll bring up Reid, Hayward, and Jackson. When we first got them, I questioned what their roles on the team would be. After some thinking, I realized that Jackson was meant to fill in if we lost Westbrook or Maynor. We obviously aren't losing Westbrook, at least not for a while now, but Reggie has filled in for Maynor much better than I think Royal would. The players we are most likely to lose now are Harden and Ibaka. If we lose Ibaka, I think Reid would start coming in behind Collison. If we lost Harden, Cook would have to come in for Sefolosha, leaving Hayward to come in for Durant.

@Crow I was at the game when Aldrich scored his first bucket. It was a one-handed put back slam. I was saddened that he did not keep that up. But I sometimes wonder how he would be different if we didn't trade Morris Peterson and DJ White for Nazr. He probably would have played center behind Perkins. I wonder how well he would have managed.

Crow

@Crow among young big men 6-10+, in 1st to 3rd years with at least as many minutes as Cole in his early career, he is average as an offensive rebounder and bottom thrid as a defensive rebounder.

Crow
Crow 5pts

the rebounding problem is some combination of not prioritizing rebounding that highly in big man selection, coaching and player effort.

Crow
Crow 5pts

Of the 100 big men 6-9+ who have 200+ minutes Mohammed is slightly above average on total rebounding %, ibaka average, perkins bottom 30%, durant and collison bottom 20%.

Crow
Crow 5pts

last 8 champs have been an average of 8th best on rebounds.

thunder near thebottom right now on reb%.

Crow
Crow 5pts

The average champion the last 8 regular seasons has been in the top 7 on 3.5 "Factors" (FG%, TO%, OR%, getting to the line and the same for defense) and bottom 7 on less than O.5. The Thunder are currently top 7 on 3 and bottom 7 on 4. Of course not all the Factors have equal value and the Thunder are top 7 on the 2 most important- eFG%and eFG% allowed. The most any of these champs were top 7 on was 5, almost 6 for the 2008-9 Lakers. The most bottom 7s was just one. If the Thunder don't win the title it will be because they have way too many bad Factor flaws. The Mavs last season were one of the weakest champs by this criteria with just 2 top 7s (and 2 close) and 1 bottom 7.

Crow
Crow 5pts

They are top 7 on eFG%, eFG% allowed and getting to the line. They are bottom 7 on both offensive and defensive rebounding and turnover %s.

Crow
Crow 5pts

Westbrook is a big contributor to 2 of the team strengths, one of the weaknesses.

Durant all the strengths and all the weaknesss too.

Crow
Crow 5pts

except defensive rebounding if you compare him against SFs instead of guys his height

Crow
Crow 5pts

Miami has 2 top 7s and 0 bottom 7. Lakers 1/1. Mavs 2/0. Blazers 3/0. Nuggets 4/1. Magic 2/1. Bulls 3/0. Boston 0/2. So only1 team has more top 7s than the Thunder but no top contending team has more than one bottom 7 (2 if you count Boston which is a stretch) while the Thunder have 4.

Presti tried to buy defense, rebounding and sizzle on offense but right now he has more of the sizzle.

Crow

@The_Beard_Knows can't change who they drafted.

Crow

@The_Beard_Knows might need a trade

@Crow Man, I hope they make some rebounding miracles happen quickly

@deleted_1998213_Don'tStoptheSergeing I'm glad they are aware of the problem. Now the question is what are they going to do about it?

Old Man Game

@Daniel Hawaii@deleted_1998213_Don'tStoptheSergeing Sounds like Collison is really on top of the problem. Hopefully this is an issue that will resolve itself if he and KD are preaching it in the locker room.

@Old Man Game@Daniel Hawaii@deleted_1998213_Don'tStoptheSergeing collison doesnt have a problem with over jumping but he needs to box out better or something.

Just saw the current all star voting and noticed that Ricky Rubio and Steve Nash are ahead of Westbrook. I think the only PG in the West that should be ahead of RW is CP3.

Old Man Game
Old Man Game 5pts

@T-Storm I guess it isn't too shocking that two guys ahead of him are guys that may have NBA fan bases from entire countries voting for them. Obviously that's a complete joke in both cases though, some decent highlights to their credit notwithstanding.

@T-Storm Actually, no one should be ahead of Russ in the point guard position.

@RandomThunderFan@T-Storm def. not rubio... nash leads the league in assists so i could see the argument... but fan voting is all about press, and westbrook is getting some bad press

@RRRWHOAAAA@RandomThunderFan Yeah, you're probably right. Hopefully he'll get some better press in the future. The extension definetly proves the Westbrook vs. Durant theory wrong. The Thunder wouldn't sign a five year extension with a point guard that can't get along with our star player.

@RRRWHOAAAA@RandomThunderFan@T-Storm Which made sense early, but last several games he has played like an all-star.

Glad Westbrook signed the extension. Just get Harden and Serge locked in and we can check getting an NBA title off of our bucket list.

BTW this is my first comment on this site.

Done deal. Makes me feel a little better about the Wiz loss. Then again, this would have been a good opportunity to put some distance between us and them.
