Thunder Player Power Rankings: Time for the second half

by Royce Young on February 29, 2012 at 12:55 pm 28 Comments

WEEK 1 | WEEK 2 | WEEK 3 | WEEK 4 | WEEK 5 | WEEK 6 | WEEK 7 | WEEK 8

So, it was a pretty good first half for the Thunder. Rewind your brain to Christmas Day where we were all looking at the schedule and saying things like, “A 6-4 start would be pretty good” and look at the first half of the season for Oklahoma City.

27-7. Best record in the West. Tied for the best record in the league. Nine games up on Portland in the Northwest. The best point differential in the West. And a clear favorite to represent the Western Conference in The Finals.

Yeah, I’d say the first half of the season has gone alright. But that’s the thing: It’s only halfway finished. There’s a whole other 33-game schedule waiting on OKC to play. There will be frustrating nights like losses to the Kings and Wizards. And there will be big, dramatic wins like over the Nuggets and Mavericks. It’s all about staying consistent. Not getting too high, or too low. Keeping your eyes on the prize and pushing toward that top seed and homecourt throughout the Western playoffs.

The NBA season is kind of a three-part process. First half, second half, playoffs. The Thunder are done with a third of it. Now it’s on to step two. Think about step three when it gets here.

Now to the rankings:

1. Kevin Durant (Last week: 1)

Let’s run down KD’s first half. He’s rounded out his game to become more of a complete player than ever, assisting more (3.4 a game), rebounding better (8.1 a game) and creating his own shot. He’s averaging 27.9 points per game, but doing as efficient as ever, hitting 51.3 percent from the field. He’s got a PER of 27.75, second to only LeBron. He’s won a bundle of games in the last two minutes, hit game-winners, made clutch plays and won an All-Star MVP. Yeah, I think he’s done alright so far.

2. Russell Westbrook (Last week: 2)

If I told you Westbrook was having his best season, you’d probably say, “Yeah, but his assists are down.” And that’s true. By three a game. But has that really hurt OKC’s offense much? Westbrook is scoring more than ever (23.5 ppg) and doing it at his most efficient levels (47 percent from the field). He’s shooting more, assisting less but unless you’re entirely wrapped into the idea that Westbrook needs to pass the ball and stand in the corner, it’s pretty clear that there’s a legit discussion as to if Russ and KD are a deadlier duo than LeBron and Wade.

3. James Harden (Last week: 4)

I’m serious when I tell people that Harden has been as valuable to OKC’s 27 wins as either Westbrook or Durant. Because just his presence is the adhesive the Thunder’s offense needs to run properly. Even if he gets shut out while Westbrook and KD do their thing in the fourth quarter, those two or three possessions where Harden creates an easy basket for himself or a teammate are bigger than you think. He’s a little things player, while doing big things. It’s his best season yet, as well as the Thunder’s, which isn’t a coincidence.

4. Serge Ibaka (Last week: 3)

Remember when Ibaka started slow and people were all like, “What’s up with Serge Ibaka?” Here’s what’s up: double-digit block games, triple-doubles and crazy offensive rebounding. I think we all expected a little more development from Ibaka in his mid-range and post games, but those haven’t been big things because, well, OKC’s offense is rolling.

5. Kendrick Perkins (Last week: 6)

If you asked Perk how he’d grade his first half, he’d probably give it a D or something. He’s hard on himself and has no problem with you being hard on him. He expects better rebounding, better scoring and fewer turnovers. Perk has a PER of just 7.03, which is the worst among starting centers. He has a turnover rate of 28.9 which with how much he handles it, it astronomical. But as you saw last Thursday against the Lakers, Perk’s post defense is extremely important to the success of the team. And he’s playing better in the box score too. His last three games he’s averaging 10.6 rebounds per.

6. Daequan Cook (Last week: 8)

As shooters tend to do, Cook went through a pretty serious slump. During a 10-day stretch in February, he missed 34 of his 38 3-point attempts. But his last two outings have been better. He’s gone 5-15, which is respectable. But more importantly, his confidence hasn’t been rattled. Cook’s role is to shoot when open. And he has to do it. He can’t ever turn down an open 3, otherwise he would need to get off the floor. Maybe 15 3s in two games is a bit much, but it’s kind of hard to tell him to chill, especially if you’re like me and think it’s going in every time he fires one up.

7. Royal Ivey (Last week: 11)

Ivey deserves a whole lot of credit for being ready to go when called upon by Scott Brooks. The Thunder’s second unit needed a steady presence on it, and Ivey has helped provide it. He’s been playing off the ball, still giving Jackson time at point guard, but Ivey’s shown off a good corner 3 stroke. Once Thabo returns, it’s unlikely Ivey maintains that time on the floor, but having those type of veteran luxuries at the end of a bench is something that separates great teams from good ones.

8. Reggie Jackson (Last week: 9)

Jackson had maybe his worst game against the Celtics last week, but bounced back with a good one against the Lakers. Such is the life of a rookie point guard. He still needs to be more decisive and take more responsibility, but then again, sometimes just getting out of the way of Harden’s two-man game with whoever is the smartest thing he can do.

9. Nazr Mohammed (Last week: 7)

Mohammed’s just sort of there. You see him show up on the floor and from then until the time he sits, you really don’t think a whole lot about him. That’s good, and bad. Good because it means he’s not doing anything that makes you say, “Freaking Nazr,” but bad because he’s not doing anything that makes you say, “FREAKING NAZR!!!”

10. Cole Aldrich (Last week: 10)

The Free Cole movement has lost some steam ever since Cole was actually freed and played minutes. But don’t be discouraged just because of what you saw in a brief six-minute run in the regular rotation. Aldrich’s activity on defense was definitely a good thing, and he absolutely has the ability to be a premier screen-setter and offensive rebounder. He needs work. He knows it. And that’s why he hasn’t fully cracked the rotation yet. But don’t give up on him just yet.

11. Ryan Reid (Last week: N/A)

Still can’t get over Reid having his family meet and take a picture with KD after the Boston game last week. It was hard not to stop and say, “awwwwwwww.”

Inactives: Eric Maynor, Thabo Sefolosha, Nick Collison, Lazar Hayward

I hate carmelo and dwight requesting trades and ruining their teams seasons but i'm the exact opposite on nash PLEASE REQUEST A TRADE!!!!

ElMexiThunder

 @OBoymuzik

 He's trying to go about things like a honorble player, but i think someone in his position should def request a trade. His skill in the point has started to fade enough to the point where he has to be a back up, but i can def see some teams trading a Med Level player for him, and resinging him to maybe a 18/3 year deal. The teams in the west who have pieces to give, in order to get him, Blazers, Nuggets, Lakers, Grizzlies, Thing is with those teams, Lakers won't be so happy trading any of their players to get an older Steve Nash, not when they get somehow lure in a young PG with potential. The Grizzlies seems bought in to Mike Conley so i don't see it happening, besides the Suns would want to get Gay in return, which the Grizz surely show they don't want to give up. The Blazers have some pieces to give in Batum, Crash, and Felton. I really doubt they trade though, they seem pretty intent in finishing the season with who they have, they however have the best pieces to give. The Nuggest have good pieces too, but i really doubt they'll give up their young talent for Nash as well. In all honesty Nash would have to go to in which both parties know he'll only be valuable to them if it really does give them a chance for a championship, and it would only be for two or three year at most. Out of the teams i just mentioned the only ones that seem like a serious threat this year are the Lakers the least likely to do it, how ever if the Grizz can pull it off, and keep Z-bo, Gasol, Gay, and Mayo, they seem pretty scary. Who knows maybe the Lakers can buy out his contract through some under the table stuff, and sign him. Kinda how Cleveland was able to trade Big Z a few years back for Antwon Jamison, and had Z buy his contract out with the Wizards and was picked up as a Free Agent.

 Also, I'm fairly certain the new CBA did away with the loop hole of resigning a player you traded away that was then waived.

 @ElMexiThunder  no problem, the new cba is pretty confusing, i had some big parts that i was wrong about

ElMexiThunder

 @f5alcon  @anonymous12345

 I wasn't aware of that. I'm not so much into the business side of basketball. That was my mistake.

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @anonymous12345

Maybe perhaps, but i still don't see the Suns just pushing for a trade to get another 1st rounder from a team who will be in the very bottom of the draft. I still think he has another two uears.  Nash is def better then anything the Magic have at the point.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

 @anonymous12345  yes that is the case in the new cba

OBoy

 @anonymous12345  @ElMexiThunder howard asked for the magic to go after nash, i'm pretty sure they would trade above nash's value if they think it would help Howard stay with them, the whole thing is that the Suns won't trade nash until he requests the trade which he won't do

anonymous12345
anonymous12345 5pts

 @ElMexiThunder

 I think you're overvaluing the price of getting Nash.  He's got maybe one more season in him.  If he gets traded it won't be for much, probably just a 1st rounder.

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @OBoymuzik

 I meant in the bigging his skill hasn't faded enough to the point where he HAS to be a back up. Nash would start for about 25 of the teams in the league easy..

For down the road possibilities...

I watched the Chicago offense pretty closely last night--they had Rose, Rip and everyone going--and came away with a better understanding of the their offense's simultaneous low reputation and high ranking.

People are obsessed with Rose and his role/assists/stats in general, but I didn't really see him "driving" the offense, or "making everything work." He's their most talented player and only elite creator. He's a stud. When they need a big basket, he's really good and often delivers. But he is far from a Steve Nash-type cog for the Bulls. I know Deng and Noah both have double-digit assist games so far this year, maybe Rip and probably Watson and Lucas in sub of Rose, too. Their offense moves the ball and gets high-percentage looks, and almost everyone in the rotation can shoot. So they have a pretty good system, great discipline, lots of good passers/spot up shooters, and Rose. It's an offense that should work well most of the time.

Amateur analysis: I don't see this offense excelling in the postseason. They move the ball well and have a lot of shooters, like the Mavs of last season, but they lack cleverness. Just keep rotating--they'll keep passing. If their defense carries them to the Finals, I'd be incredibly disappointed if we make it and don't win.

 @ATH Hollinger said basically the same thing about their offense in the postseason in his Per Diem today. Compared their system to the Hawks and Blazers from the past couple seasons.

 @sammasaaron That's funny. I really like Hollinger, and he's way smarter than me. Glad I'm seeing some of the same things.

 I completely agree with your anaysis.

ElMexiThunder

Heres to hoping a good final month of recovery for Sefo, and Nick to play tonight. Would be nice to have them both back. D Cook has been great, but Sefo still plays better defense, and unfortunately Cook hasn't done so much on offense to make anyone think he should stay the perma starter. Def like that hes not afraid to shoot the 3, i know thats his biggest skill but man that burst he had against the Lakers where he went like 1-4 in short time span was horrific.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

 @ElMexiThunder cook is not a good 3 point shooter for a specialist, he is 3rd on our team in 3 point percentage and 18th of 21 in the league of players with more than 150 3PA.

TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard

 @f5alcon  @ElMexiThunder Other teams don't seem to recognize that, and as long as they continue to respect him like they do now, I'm fine with him not being a great shooter since yes, getting 3 or 6 more points from him would be nice, but his floor spacing effect yields much more in total.

TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard
TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard 5pts

 @ElMexiThunder  @f5alcon well he also tore out the gates this season. His "out of slump" was his start, and now he's in the slump. I'm sure he'll come out of it. The guy's more than proved he can shoot the ball when he's on.

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @f5alcon  @JimboSlice

 If he could just shoot better, that 9-12 more points a game easy. I don't know whats up with him, last season he had a shooting slump then snapped out of it, this season its like the slump ain't ganna stop.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

 @JimboSlice yeah i don't have a problem with cook's role, he could just shoot better.

Remify

 @ElMexiThunder

 he just needs to use pump fakes a lot more to draw some 3 shot fouls or let them fly by, since defense knows he shoots no matter what. because right now they are just flying at him, not respecting pump fakes at all

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

 @Remify That or he needs to start kicking his feet out like Harden use to last season. Harden wouldn't get that foul call so much last season, but he's still only a moderate 3 point shooter. Players like Cook who shoot no matter what, in which the defense recognizes that will get that call if they stick their feet out. Of course they kinda have to act a bit, Harden was terrible at that.

I agree about Westbrook. I'd, of course, like to see his assist numbers rise and his TO's decrease, but if I had to choose, I'd take this version of Russ over last year's.

sammasaaron

 @SammyThunderer I agree and I think part of his assist total declining is that KD is creating his own shot more this year, so Russ has lost out on a few automatic-KD-assists a game. His assists might also be up if Ibaka and Perk didn't have hands of stone so frequently.
