Video: Russell Westbrook’s absurd block

by Royce Young on February 7, 2012 at 1:30 pm 30 Comments

This should be getting more attention today because a) it saved the game for Oklahoma City and b) it was completely, totally ridiculous. Look at Russell Westbrook’s elevation. Look at his body control. Look at how he swipes perfectly at the ball and doesn’t foul.

Westbrook does a lot of absurd things in a basketball games — for better and for worse — but these type of plays are what tell you the story about him. He’s always going full out, always ready and willing to make that extra play.

The strange thing though? Evidently this wasn’t ruled a block as the official box score has Westbrook with zero for the game.

Dear Russell:

You are flat out unbelievable.

Signed,

Loud City

MRI results came back for Chauncey Billups. Confirmed achilles tear. Needs season-ending surgery and his career is possibly over. Sad news, but it puts the Thunder in a slightly better position to win the West. Also, it gives Russ a slightly better chance of making the US Olympic team.

I don't really blame PDX fans for being pissed. Think how we all felt after the infamous Utah KD-hacked-at-the-buzzer game. Add to that the fact that PDX has had a problem winning close games this year, especially over playoff teams...

@SammyThunderer yeah i don't blame them either, we would be just as mad.

I thought the same thing about this needing to get more attention, Royce. I thought for sure that this would be getting all kinds of love. I thought it would be the highlight of the night and be what was talked about in game recaps. Shoulda known it would be about the goaltend. How absurd is it that Russ isn't even credited with a block? Someone needs a stat correct, stat. See what I did there?

Off topic, about Russell Westbrook, ... but

How many commercials for local Okc businesses is he in?

puntodog
puntodog 5pts

@Air Bud I can think of at least three commercials for local OKC businesses with Russell as the spokesperson.

@anonymous12345 that should make our game against them easier.

NBA Officials say LMA's goaltend should have been a block on KD's Layup...

@Durienne The way I see it . . . . We're all subject to human, fallible officiating. I know it stinks when they make a mistake and it goes against you, but occasionally they're going to make a mistake that goes your way instead. You can't accept the favorable ones without tolerating the others. Of course, it would be great if they were perfect all the time--but they do a DARN good job for the lightning speed of the game action. There were missed calls in the OKC/POR game on both sides throughout. I stand by what I said earlier: Let the team who is without benefit of a bad call cast the first stone.

ThunderChick2010

. . . but trying to do-si-do with Durant wasn't a foul?

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

@ThunderChick2010 lol, just don't go read the blazers site, they think the last part of the game should be replayed and they get the ball because they blocked the shot, even though harden got the rebound.

@f5alcon@Air Bud It appears out division-mates are turning out to be quite the rivals. Me likey likey.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

@Air Bud no of course not, just that they got robbed of a division win. I just hope they keep their slide going and miss the playoffs totally.

@f5alcon@ThunderChick2010 Are Blazer fans discussing how their team got out-rebounded by 20 or how they failed to show up in OT?

Both teams had to play through bad calls and both teams had to show up in OT.

f5alcon
f5alcon 5pts

@Durienne now portland fans will have more to complain about, really harden still rebounded the ball and we may have still scored .

I Can't believe this wasn't on top plays today.... talk about absurd.

Durienne

@DavyTheWise It was the block of the night and the #2 play of the night on NBA.com.

Keith00

How come Portland fans aren't up in arms about that play? Oh right, because Westbrook destroyed Batum beyond a shadow of a doubt.

How can a block not be a block when it shows up as the block of the night on NBA.com...ponder that :)

Can anybody make out what the lady behind the commentary guy is screaming? Sounds kinda funny bleeding through the commentary mic. When she starts screaming after the block, she sounds like the chicken from Angry Birds.

Oh, yeah...nice play Russ.

Jooseppi

I didn't see this because Westbrook eats children and makes voodoo dolls of his teammates. This clearly never happened.

You would think that something so obvious would be reviewable the next day and Russ would get credited for the block.

Aside from that, it was just a ridiculously athletic, game saving play.
