A semi-complete guide to the Thunder’s pregame routine

by Royce Young on March 22, 2012 at 2:47 pm 88 Comments

Before the Oklahoma City Thunder can tip-off and start flying up and down a basketball court, they have to get ready. I’m not talking about pregame speeches, stretches or warmups.

I’m talking about their intricate, developed, extravagant pregame routine.

Professional athletes are strange creatures. They live in a world where thousands of people pay to watch them do their job, a job in which they’re paid millions of dollars to do. They travel all over the world playing this game, they build incredible relationships with teammates and live in a daily grind and routine.

They’re weird. They know it too. And so they embrace it, accept it and come up with strange handshakes, routines and rituals along the way. I’m not saying the Thunder’s is the best. But the fact it seems to be such an important part, speaks to the chemistry of this group. Other teams give some quick high-fives and handshakes and walk out onto the floor. The Thunder go through a handshake assembly line.

(An aside, of one of my favorite moments from last season: During Nate Robinson’s second game with the team, I actually saw him standing at mid-court practicing his handshake for KD by himself. It was hilarious.)

It goes like this, because the video I put up there really doesn’t capture it all. The starting lineups go through, the Thunder huddle briefly by the bench and then the bench mob seriously forms a line. Cole Aldrich spends his time waiting on his handshakes by jumping into whoever is next to him. (It used to be Ryan Reid — RIP.) James Harden, Eric Maynor and Daequan Cook gather and yell in unison. Russell Westbrook skips through, slaps some chalk on his hands and then does this finger gunz thing at the crowd. And the best part: An usher pops off a some streamers when he does it, which is super cool.

KD follows behind, doing handshakes with the assembly line. He licks his fingers, fistbumps the scorers table as his puts his feet on it to untie and re-tie each shoe. Then he stomps on the sticky pad thing at mid-court while saying a prayer. He crosses himself, points to the sky, taps his chest (which has his grandma and mom’s names tattooed there), taps his back (which has Maryland tattooed there), points to the crowd and then points to the seats where his mom and grandma sit. Then he grabs Serge Ibaka and they say things to each other, which typically consists of Ibaka repeating “Lezzgo, lezzgo, lezzgo.”

Perk goes through the line — jersey always untucked — and gets a hug and does a thing with Royal Ivey. But my favorite thing is that Perk MUST give a fistbump to every Thunder official at the scorekeeper’s table (though I acknowledge he didn’t do it in the second video — I think I missed it). Like I’ve seen him stop and wait for one if they have their head down. He can’t play unless he gets that fistbump.

After that, it’s about the niceties of shaking opponents’ hands, Ibaka sniffing the ball and then it’s game on.

Between this and every player’s middle name, you’re completely set for the rest of the season on things you need to know.

The ritual is really extensive and elaborate. It is their thing so I won't say anything else.

Do you feel at all responsible for the loss incured at the two games you videoed this...like maybe...YOU RUINED IT!?

It's increasingly looking like OKC, SAS, and LAL will be 1, 2, and 3. As much as it pains me to say it, I want to see OKC face the Spurs in the WCF because I think that's a test Brooks needs to pass if we're to trust him going forward. If OKC loses to the Spurs, I think there's a very good chance Brooks doesn't get invited back next year. But I think there's a not insignificant chance the Lakers take the Spurs in the second round and OKC handles LAL easily en route to a 5 or 6 game loss vs Miami. Would be a lot harder for Presti to justify firing Brooks if he gets to the Finals.

@SammyThunderer right, brooks is not getting fired unless we fail to make WCF, I think he comes back even if we get embarrassed by the spurs in the WCF.

@SammyThunderer I think Brooks does a pretty good job given the way the team is constructed. That meaning, Russell Westbrook at PG is the most reliable offensive inside threat on his drives. Given that scenario and Russell's maturity issues from time to time...Brooks has done fine in my eyes. I will admit though..I always have wondered to myself what this team would play like if Mo Cheeks were the head coach and Scott Brooks was the assistant. As far as matchups--I'm not even considering those yet. OKC needs to focus on OKC and being able to play team defense on a nightly basis and to hit the boards like aspiring championship teams do on a regular basis.

@SammyThunderer Pretty much. While I still think Miami is the best team in the league, I think the Spurs are probably the toughest match up for us. Kind of like Dallas was for us last year.

LAC getting beaten by the Hornets should serve as a sobering reminder of just how poorly the Clips have been playing this month, and how much we should be wary reading into that victory last night.

El Prez

It's one thing to lose a stabilizing force like Billups, it's another thing to replace him with an idiot like Nick Young. This is a pristine example of why the LA Clippers are arguably the worst franchise in professional sports. I'll be shocked if del Negro makes it through mid-April. He's lost his team.

Jooseppi

@SammyThunderer Or maybe it's a just a reminder of how mediocre a team the Clippers are? Something almost every metric supports?

26-21. 4-6 in last 10, 6-8 in March, 8-12 in last 20. They were only 8-6 in February. They are just a mediocre team that got off to a fast start,

@SammyThunderer  nah man. anything can happen in basketball.  Portland waltzed into chicago and beat them *roseless*  and of course chicago beat miami *roseless*  so yeah stuff happens :P.     Honestly the clippers just look demoralized.  Its like they had SOOOO MUCH HYPE and now they have been shown their flaws and its like  :(  sad face. lol.   I mean look what happen with the knicks. what was that phase ..errr..binsanity....minsanity...no...OH!  Linsanity. thats so 24 seconds ago :P

@Daniel Hawaii The Clippers could very well not qualify for the playoffs. Nick Young as a tradeoff for Chauncy Billups is like jumping off a cliff. I would not want Nick Young wearing a Thunder jersey.

@shiki Del Negro never should've gotten the job in the first place. With the roster they have though, D'Antoni would be an awesome pickup. They'd PnR the crap out of us

Vinny will probably be canned if they keep going south. I wonder if the Zenmaster is bored up in Montana or whereever it is he now spends his time. A really good coach should be able to win big with CP3, Blake, and Caron Butler. Make the Zenmaster a Clipper and see if he's good enough to beat the Clipper Curse.

So who's going to be the league's primary player/statesman once Fisher retires? I guess Shane Battier is a choice but he's getting on in years also and will be gone before long. Maybe Jeremy Lin. He's got that Ivy League academic pedigree to stand on and the big stage of New York. Who else?

courtsense

@Old Man Game Definitely Battier. He won't be gone for awhile...

BUT - this team already has 2 All-Star shooting guards...not sure we need another unless 1 of the current guys leaves...don't I wish.
