by Thunderground Radio on March 18, 2012 at 1:24 pm 33 Comments

Rough week for Thunder fans. TGR hooked up with Royce of Daily Thunder & CBSSports.com to council us through our doubts and fears.

Topics covered:

  • Westbrook’s relationship with the press
  • Brooks’ development as a coach
  • Harden’s status as a merging star in the NBA (top three shooting guard?)
  • Denver’s weird trade
  • How much Blazers fans hate the Thunder

All this and tons more…

If anything--both Royce and Darnell are way too easy on Russell. Basically--this was an NBA game with paid professionals. Russell allowed himself to be totally snookered by Dragic--and then by his immature behavior--literally cost his team a basketball game because of 'his' meltdown. The only defense of Russ is that Scott Brooks should have pulled his ass and he shouldn't have been out there on the floor.  He should have answered the question. How is any of this tough to decipher?

To be fair, Westbrook didn't answer the question well. To be fair, thats ok. If you dont have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I have no problem with Russ ignoring the question. Kobe and other athletes do that all the time. No comment is a fine answer.

To be fair, @Royce Young , you did sound mad in the article. it was obvious to everyone. maybe you werent actually angry, but you came off as if you took it personal and were annoyed. that ok too

To be fair, royce always defends Russ and other thunder players, some would say to a fault.

I'm sure its water under the bridge. I think its great that this blog has given Royce a front row seat into all things thunder, and for that, he should be thankful. He works hard, but we all should be thankful for our success. And just like I assume Royce can take it a little personal when DT posters sling arrows at him (comments like "we'll, you weren't in the locker room so you dont know!" are unnecessary... we all know this royce, only you are in the locker room on this board) so in turn can Russ take it personal when the media asks him tough questions after the game. he is an emotional guy. thats why we love him. thats why skip bayless hates him. Thunder UP, hope we get a win tonightb

I say we keep the contents of this article's comments here and move on to the game thread singing "kum by yah"

On this Westbrook thing, it's amazing how many people have missed the point entirely. It has absolutely ZERO to do with me. Nothing. It's just a history about Westbrook's immaturity in those type of situations. And it's often reflected on the court. I happened to be the one that asked the question, but it could've been anybody. Westbrook didn't hurt my feelings whatsoever. I don't really give a crap what Russ thinks about me.

If you actually listened to the podcast, you'd hear there was probably more praise for Westbrook than anything else, but obviously some folks hear what they want to hear.

@Royce Young

The MSM are part of the game because they premote storylines that get people to watch the game at home and on the TV.  We might not like what they say but its important that people other then devoted fans watch this team the closer it comes to a championship.  While ratings mean little to you or me, the people pay for the ADs, do care.

If Russ wants to be treated better by MSM has show he is a professional.   He can earn the respect from the Media but he has to learn how to handle the situation better.

@Royce Young THIS. I am thoroughly confused why people have been upset with Royce about this.

I don't have a problem with Royce writing the prior article about Russ  blowing off the interview question. I'm sure we would have gotten the same response from him if Mayberry or Tramel has asked the same question. Russ reacted poorly and that is on him. Does that make Russ a bad person? Of course not. I don't think Royce or the guys of TGR or anybody else here that loved him before doesn't love him now.

I also don't see an issue with it appearing in the podcast because the podcast serves as recap of the prior week and this happened to be an event that occurred in the last week. Now if Royce continues to rehash this issue repeatedly, then it becomes a case of him being pissed at Russ. But from what I've read and heard from him, I don't get the vibe that he's pissed. I don't think this comes up again assuming Russ doesn't have a bad run-in with the media again.

@dancassidy35 "I don't think this comes up again assuming Russ doesn't have a bad run-in with the media again. " You consider him ignoring royce's question a "bad run-in"? Really? I could see if he was Downing and Slandering His Teammates in the media, that I would Consider a "bad run-in"

Fezzy

I guess we just differ on what we think a bad run-in with the media would be then.

Typical self aggrandizing media members. How dare he not answer my question to my satisfaction, does he not know who I am? Players wouldn't even deal with you in they weren't forced to. Bunch of professional haters and cheerleaders who just use their pens to try to convince the general public to come to their side. Nobody gives a care if your feelings were hurt.

@kdub LoL I've actually thought about how terrible of a presidential candidate I'd be during one of my extremely bored moments. Once the opposing party got ahold of my web surfing history, I'd be donezo. I'd be out faster than Herman Cain. "You really want a president.... who is into THIS!!! Running the country?!

@dancassidy35  @nomad  @kdub Winning an argument (especially on the internet in a message board) is like winning the African Lottery.  Everyone can do it, just have to send in your 50 bucks to collect the prize.

@Royce Young Lol....just instigating bro....don't mind me but dude brings up a valid point....I do tend too think athletes if they had a choice wouldn't even deal with the media...however, Russ has to understand that he represents more than just himself and when u are an elite athletic getting paid millions, media relations are part of the job....still giving that point to DennisBerry....OWNED!!!!

ThunderChick2010

@ThunderWins My guess is that Westbrook knew he had screwed up and was completely disgusted with what he'd just allowed to happen.  It's too bad he disappointed someone who has been his champion and gave fuel to the media members who are not inclined to treat him so kindly.

Lost Ones

@Royce Young  @ThunderChick2010  @ThunderWins obviously i wasn't in the locker room , i was going by what you wrote.

Sustainable Parameters

@Royce Young  @Lost Ones  @ThunderChick2010  @ThunderWins But you told us what happened. You asked a question, he didn't answer, you wrote a "well that's why everyone hates him" article. We saw this similar thing almost to a T with LeBron and the reporter in the finals. Dude even twitter, "Yea LeBron owned me, but wait til you see what I got" and wrote a "scathing," in his opinion anyways, criticism article.

Russ should've just pulled a KD and said something about Jesus. Mainstream America gobbles that stuff up.

And lol at me being owned. 8 hrs from now I won't even remember this until I get the LiveFyre notification email if someone responds.

@Lost Ones  @ThunderChick2010  @ThunderWins What's obvious to me is that you weren't in that locker room and really don't have any idea what happened.

Also, I got asked about it on the podcast, so I answered the question. Should I have pulled a Westbrook and just sat in silence?

Lost Ones
Lost Ones 5pts

@ThunderChick2010  @ThunderWins He just didn't feel like reliving that moment ESPECIALLY TO THE MEDIA; and honestly I cant blame him because he knows he messed up. Its also clearly obvious Royce has hurt feelings over it,  because if he didn't he wouldn't still be harping over the situation.
