Friday Bolts – 4.27.12

by Royce Young on April 27, 2012 at 9:57 am 50 Comments

Brian Phillips of Grantland: “And no, not every young team finds it. But as a Thunder fan, I’m trying to stay cool and look at April as a step back that was necessary to take a big step forward down the road. The first round of the playoffs is going to be fascinating, especially if OKC winds up playing the Mavs, a crumbling post-LWT champion that could force the Thunder to grow up or die trying. Anything could happen over the next few weeks. The Thunder could crash out of the playoffs in the first round,9 win the title,10 or crash out of the playoffs in the first round and then win the title next year. And that, ultimately, is part of what’s so fun about following them. It sucks to be reminded that feeling not-good is a part of sports, but with a team as electric and likable as the Thunder, it’s worth it for the possibility of feeling just extremely not-not-good a little later.”

Sam Amick of SI with an outstanding feature on KD: “I don’t know why [I didn't care]. With basketball, and everything that surrounds basketball, I was working so hard and I wasn’t seeing any results, so I was like, ‘Man, I can’t keep working this hard if nothing is going to happen,’ so I was like, ‘Forget it.’ … I was going to quit, and be a so-called street guy. I would go to practice, but I would slack off. I would take plays off. I would just be there just to be there. I was happy I was just on varsity. I didn’t want any more from myself.” Once again, however, his mother did. “She could see it in my eyes and she pulled me to the side one day, and she slapped it out of me,” he said. “She talked to me, gave me some good words and kind of revved me up a little bit, so ever since then I’ve been on the same path.”

So long, B-Rad.

Playoff shirt. They’re very limited so hustle.

Shoals for GQ: “The Thunder, meanwhile, ended up with the second-best record in the league. Kevin Durant has improved on all fronts, Russell Westbrook makes a little more sense and in general, James Harden is alive, and OKC seems less like a bunch of individuals and more like a team with a plan for success. Couple that with the awesome talent level of Durant and Westbrook and you have a team that’s ideally positioned to chew through a disorganized Mavs team. Still, Dirk Nowtizki is a gamer, and if there’s a veteran team that could surprise with an eleventh-hour reboot, it’s Dallas. That’s not to say they will beat OKC, but stranger things have happened than this turning into a series. Like the Mavericks getting past the Thunder last spring.”

Jeff Caplan of ESPN Dallas with some early thoughts: “No matter how you slice it, the Thunder’s athleticism is superior to that of the Mavs’ at just about every position. Turn the ball over and watch OKC run down the floor for slam dunks. Don’t box out and watch the Thunder score second-chance points. Don’t rotate quickly and help on defense and watch the Thunder go to the free throw line — only the Nuggets averaged more per game. Dallas will bank on its experience and savvy to win out over athleticism, particularly in crunch time.”

Jason Kidd on the series: “Now the dress rehearsal is over and now this is for us to protect our crown, what we did last year, see if we can get another one,” Kidd said. “They’re a talented team. They’re young, they’re exciting, they can get out and run. We have (to be strong) on the defensive end because they can the score the ball. We’ve got our hands full.”

For those who like men in Article on Grantland comparing NBA personalities to Pro Rasslers: Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook Are The Rockers I know I just used Shawn Michaels, but if you can think of a better hyperdynamic tag-team relationship that will inevitably end up with one of the guys tossing the other through a plate glass window, let me know. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7861414/david-stern-vince-mcmahon-lebron-james-john-cena-wwe-guide-nba

Fuzzy Logic

@Jax Raging Bile Duct It supposed to have said "men in tights".... which fairly well describes most stereotypically masculine sporting activities... Thankfully the NBA has done away with that when they got rid of those short shorts from the 70's.

Would like to see Royal inserted for 2-3 minutes at a time with one mission - wear Terry like a glove. Terry can get frustrated in a hurry and Royal might just be the right irritant.

An interesting Round 1 with a strong international flavor. May need a multi-lingual ref to keep track of the foreign trash-talking: Parlez vous francais - Thabo, Rodrigue Beaubois, Yawn (Ian) Mahinmi, and Serge; German - Dirk; Spanish - Serge and JJ (oh, yeah, Cuban let him get away); Swahili-Serge; and Perkanese - a cross between south Texas and Boston.

@SoonerSpens With a companion class - "How to Invade Another Player's Personal Space During a Break in Play." One of my most favorite Perk moves of all time, topped off by the look on his face of "I'm just standing here, minding my own business, doing what I do."

I tried to get a single ticket to game 1 on ticketmaster, got to the last step twice and it said "This event is restricted to residents of Oklahoma, Texas, blah blah blah." Very strange since my address is in Oklahoma. So I didn't get a ticket...sad day :(

Good news! I expressed my displeasure with Ticketmaster on Twitter, and was contacted by the Thunder, and put in touch with a Thunder rep, and I was able to purchase a ticket for game 2 on Monday. Thanks for being such a great organization OKC Thunder. This will be the third year in a row I'll have made it to at least one playoff game. Yay!

ThunderChick2010
ThunderChick2010 5pts

@HardenIsMyManCrush Don't forget the Reward Zone.  If you're willing to sit in line for a few (or more than a few) hours, you should be able to buy a pair of cheap tickets ($30-$40/pair, I think) or you might even win a pair of tickets in the drawing.

KD's Pocket Guide To Defying Physics

@ThunderChick2010 I might do this. Tried this last year during the Denver series, and they drew the two numbers on either side of my number, just my luck I guess. Luckily some dude was selling a couple tickets at face outside the arena so I snatched them up.

ThunderChick2010
ThunderChick2010 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

This might help.  I just read that the Rewards Zone will be a little different for the playoffs.  No need to stand in line for hours!  They will open registration 4 hours before tipoff and close it 2 hours later--so you can register from 4:30 - 6:30 tomorrow or Monday.  At 90 minutes before tip (7:00) they will draw 100 winners.  The first 25 get a free pair; the next 75 can buy a cheap pair of tickets.  This is good news as you won't be tethered to the line and up against people that are willing to camp out all day.

They're also encouraging people to bring blankets and lawn chairs to watch on the big screen outside the arena.  So . . . this could be an okay option if you don't get lucky.

@HardenIsMyManCrush Don't give up. Rent a sad looking kid, show up an hour before tip and hope someone takes pity on you and "your kid." Get the ticket, give the kid a buck for ice cream and cut him loose, then go enjoy the game!

C-Wil
C-Wil 5pts

@f5alcon Nah, no injuries this time. I want to beat down Dallas as is. Their fans actually think their team is a figment of what it was last year. No Chandler, no Barea, no Butler, Dirk is way down compared to last year and out of shape, not to mention we beat them 3-1 in the season series.

My only concern is that Carlisle is a superior coach than Brooks, we all acknowledge this. So that's good for 1 maybe 2 wins for Dallas. We got this in 6 max.

ou_sas
ou_sas 5pts

@C_Dub  @f5alcon  From J.A. Adande's preview on ESPON today: After playing some good ball in January the Mavericks are 22-22 since Feb. 1.

I think Dallas is in for a looooong short series. Like Denver last year.

and he says that they will shred the west

ou_sas
ou_sas 5pts

@tydude I do think we'll do very well against Dallas, Lakers (assuming they win) and then give the Spurs at the very least all they can handle. Shred might be a strong word, but I do think we should get to the WCF without taking either series to 7. Probably win at least one series in 5.

For all of you in class and taking exams - good luck and best wishes and godspeed and all that.

I took my last final 11 years ago. It was one of the biggest reliefs of my entire life. It took a few years after that, but I finally stopped having that dream that it's midterms and you get your exam schedule only to find out that you completely forgot to attend a single government class all semester long and it's past the drop date.

Anyway, my advice to you is to use your DVR. This was not an option 11 years ago. But I find that sometimes, SOMETIMES, it's better to watch a game on DVR after you already know the outcome. If it's a win and I know it, I can watch it without my blood boiling. Otherwise, just delete it and try about 8 shots of that new Tequila you've been eyeing.

But trust me on the sunscreen.
