Kevin Durant wins his third straight scoring title

by Royce Young on April 26, 2012 at 2:16 pm 228 Comments

It’s a 3-peat for KD.

Lakers coach Mike Brown said Thursday that Kobe Bryant will sit in L.A.’s final game against Sacramento. Kobe needed 38 points to take the scoring title from Durant. Durant’s margin of victory of just 0.17 points per game is the second closet in league history.

Durant is now both the youngest player to win three straight scoring titles as well as three scoring titles period. KD has three at 23. Michael Jordan didn’t win his third until 25.

Durant is also just the seventh player ever to win three straight joining George Mikan, Neil Johnston, Bob McAdoo, George Gervin, Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan. Only two players have ever won four straight — MJ and Wilt. The all-time record for consecutive scoring titles is seven, held by both Jordan and Wilt. The most scoring titles all-time is 10, held by Jordan.

Durant finished the year averaging 28.03 points per game. The other two seasons he averaged 27.7 and 30.1 ppg, respectively. For his career, he’s averaging 26.3 ppg.

Anybody else see/hear Shaq's unbelievably weak freestyle over a DJ Shadow beat on Inside the NBA just now? I'd crush that dude in a cypher.

durant might "battle" westbrook for a scoring title in the future.

@Crow How many times has a dude won a scoring title when his teammate was also a top five scorer in the league?

@duhsweetness  @Crow Melo and AI,Kobe and Shaq in my memory

@shiki  @Crow Looks like it was Alex English and Kiki Vandeweghe in 1982-83. They were 1 and 2 respectively. The Nuggets lost in the semis to the Spurs.

Crow

@duhsweetness  @shiki this is not comprehensive but a quick check of a good source shows really big scoring duos and trios don't seem to win titles very often, ever.  more titles are won by duo and trios with pretty big scoring from at least the #2 guy but either defense or good teammate offense play an important role instead of really high scoring from both stars.

@duhsweetness  @Crow I always remember Melo and AI did it once but it is wrong

@duhsweetness It has happened 5 times in the last 20 years. 3 times in the last 5 (OKC this season, Miami last season and Denver with Iverson / Melo).

All right, I need to start researching for my annual playoff bet. Would appreciate if someone could confirm that these are the final playoff seedings: West. 1-SA, 2-OKC, 3-LAL, 4-Memphis, 5-Lac, 6-den, 7-dal, 8-Utah. East 1-chi, 2-Mia, 3-ind, 4-atl, 5-bos, 6-orl, 7-ny, 8-Philly.

@Tequila or Failure Switch Atlanta and Boston.

@duhsweetness Right on, thanks. Since I don't think any of you are in my betting pool, anyone feel free to chime in in how I see this playing out: Round 2 - SA vs LAC, Okc vs Den, Chi vs Boston, Mia vs ind. Rd 3 SA over Okc, Mia over Bos Finals SA over Mia in 6.

@Tequila or Failure  @duhsweetness seems pretty good imo. i might think about memphis over lac but i havent studied it.

Wow the "quality" of sideline reporters for tnt has suddenly gone up.

Crow

@Old Man Game sideline reporters should either be funny, good-looking or really detail oriented. probably one of the first two.

Mostly likely the series will go 6-7 games. Mavs are not a strong road team but it might only take 1 such win to tip the balance.

Tequila or Failure

@Crow I guess it'll go 6. Really don't think much of Dallas this year & am not at all sorry we drew them over Denver. I predict we split @ home, everyone around here panics, we split there, then win the next 2. If Russ plays as he can, & Dirk doesn't find that magic playoff pixie dust that he found last year, we should be ok.

Crow
Crow 5pts

@Tequila or Failure  @Crow yeah that scenario is fairly likely

ou_sas

@Crow  @Tequila or Failure West did miss one game this season, so the sample size is even smaller. Still, seems like if Russ drives on Delonte, he's gonna have more success than trying to take pull up jumpers on him. I'm guessing the real question is going to be the defensive rotations from Hayward and Dallas' other centers.

Crow
Crow 5pts

@ou_sas  @Tequila or Failure by contrast, west shot really well against westbrook this season

Crow
Crow 5pts

@ou_sas  @Tequila or Failure "Russ hasn't hit anything outside the paint..."

literally. zero baskets made outside the paint when presumably matched up with west.

@Crow  @Tequila or Failure This year, when Delonte's on the court, Russ hasn't hit anything outside the paint, but hasn't taken any 3 pointers either. Inside the paint, however; Russ is scoring higher than normal.

@Crow  @Tequila or Failure By my calculation, .425% since Delonte got moved from Cleveland (or since 2010). Not good, but the overall numbers are skewed by some really bad games in his rookie year.

duhsweetness

@Crow  @Tequila or Failure I don't know about when Delonte guards Russ specifically, but Russ has only had two bad games against Delonte's teams (one this year in that 104-102 loss, and one back in Cleveland when Delonte was still bangin' Lebron's mama)

Crow

@Tequila or Failure more realistic of course is more kidd & d west on russ. anybody recall westbrook vs west matchups?

Crow

@Tequila or Failure marion's D could be an important factor too.

extreme possibility: has he ever guarded westbrook?

Crow

@Tequila or Failure wonder what vince carter will do. if the mavs are to win they could use a strong performance from him. he has only been a role player for them though.

Thunder has to get to the free throw line a lot to beat Dallas. The good news is they did that all 4 games against them this season.

Great individual accomplishment for Kevin....but. The bottomline is that in professional basketball your legacy is determined by how many championships your teams wins--not how many scoring titles are won individually. MJ. Magic, Larry, and Timmy built their legacies on NBA championships--not on scoring or rebounding titles. I'm ready for Kevin and BLD to show me their championship DNA. Right now. This playoff season. This is when great players build their legacies---when the games really matter and defense is being played for 48 minutes.

shiki
shiki 5pts

@El Prez players' legacies were always with coaches' legacies,is Brooks ready?

El Prez
El Prez 5pts

Shiki---that's a darn good question. I don't know if he's ready. He needs to put on his Big Boy Britches as a coach--that's for sure. These guys aren't kids anymore--they're grown men and this is the time for this coach and these players to step up and claim their moment. The simple fact of the matter is...OKC has yet to win a playoff series against what I would describe as an alpha NBA franchise...Lakers, Spurs, Mavs, or Celtics. They beat Denver and Memphis..and have lost to the Lakers and Mavs. This is not the stuff legacies are built upon. I'll be real blunt--if OKC gets eliminated by these Mavs--then I would think Scott Brooks' days might be numbered...much like Avery Johnson's days were numbered after the Mavs were shocked in the first round by Golden State. This is a performance oriented deal--every coach knows this going in. To me it's very simple--is OKC truly an elite NBA team or just the Western Conference's version of the Atlanta Hawks? We're getting ready to find out.

 @El Prez

We're the same way--just buy single game tickets, usually on ticketexchange as we go.  The good thing about that is I've gotten to sit all over the place and now have a pretty good feel for seats I'll like.  (Fortunately, high seats are not a problem as my Thunder-love pretty much is larger than my bank account.)  I've learned to avoid the ends of the rows if possible--too many people blocking your view as they get in and out--and Rows D and H have some truly lousy seats with obstructed view.

You're gonna have a great time if they don't have to cart you away!  :)

El Prez
El Prez 5pts

I never sit in the same seat twice. I've never had season tickets, but I've never missed a playoff game. I have a bad left eye as a result of a detached retina some years ago. I can't see anything when I'm sitting up high. I like to be right down there where the action is. To me--the best value seat in the building is in Sec 109 or on one of the corners near the Thundergirls by the opposing bench. I'm not sure how I'm going to play this deal with these Devon seats on Saturday night. I'm a very emotional/competitive fan. If Russ makes a pivotal play at crunch time...I may just lose control of myself despite the setting. The 8:30pm start is perfect. Some Mexican food and Pacificos over at the cafe on Sheridan -- then playoff basketball. I can't wait for Saturday night. I hope they have rickshaws available for post season.

@El Prez our team are better because our core players are better.Brooks is big reason for players improvement but is he the biggest reason?KD,Russ and Harden were much better after this summer, and we knew they cannot contact their coach because of lockout.

ThunderChick2010
ThunderChick2010 5pts

@El Prez oh . . . you're THAT guy.  :)  Except for my one-time dream seats, I've always had seats up in the rafters.  But it's all good--just glad to be in the building!

El Prez
El Prez 5pts

The first year when we sucked so bad...my son and I got comped and got to sit on the floor next to Eddie Sutton for a Pistons game. Right there behind the Pistons bench. I despise Rasheed Wallace---this would rank as the highlight of  my Thunder fandom...other than Game 7 against Memphis or Game 5 against Denver. Usually--I like sitting down low under the basket where I can wave a balloon and scream at the opposing players. JR Smith would pick me out of a lineup in five seconds. Trust me.

ThunderChick2010
ThunderChick2010 5pts

@El Prez Wow . . . I'm jealous -- not of the demons, but the good seats!  Last year, I got to sit an arm's length behind KD for one game. . . . quite an experience.

El Prez
El Prez 5pts

He didn't answer--I guess it was. I'm not big into rhetorical questions, but I guess if you have to eat one on the internet---then so be it. My son called me early this morning--I get to go with him and sit in the really good Devon seats for Game 1. Given we will be among his business peers.. I'm not so sure about the BLD chant if I want to return to these seats later in the playoffs. The series hasn't even started ...  and I'm dealing with my own demons.

ThunderChick2010
ThunderChick2010 5pts

 @Crow  @El Prez rhetorical question?

El Prez
El Prez 5pts

Or it wouldn't matter either way because the NBA is a star driven league--not a coach driven league.

First rule of coaching--players make the coach. I would say Scott Brooks's ultimate fate will be determined by Kevin and Russ--not vice versa.

Were you being a smart ass?
