NBA suspends Metta World Peace seven games for elbow

by Royce Young on April 24, 2012 at 6:56 pm 50 Comments

The NBA announced late Tuesday that Metta World Peace has been suspended seven games for his elbow on James Harden.

With the Lakers only having one regular season game remaining, World Peace will miss all of the Lakers opening round series, unless it goes seven games.

“The concussion suffered by James Harden demonstrates the danger posed by violent acts of this kind, particularly when they are directed at the head area,” NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement. “We remain committed to taking necessary measures to protect the safety of NBA players, including the imposition of appropriate penalties for players with a history of on-court altercations.”

Harden is recovering from a concussion and will miss Oklahoma City’s game Tuesday against the Kings and is listed as day to day. His status for Wednesday’s game against the Nuggets or the playoffs ahead of that is still unknown.

I am a LONG time lurker, but I don't like how everyone is playing like Serge just backed off Artest when Artest started grabbing himself and jawing like a moron. I like to think Serge was just like (internal dialogue) " This dude is an absolute idiot. I don't need this tainting my record. Plus this guy is obviously going to get suspended, and I am a lot more valuable to my team than he is to them. Screw this dig your own grave Ronny."

TL;DR Serge played it smart by not engaging that lunatic. Serge could waste him anyway.

Anything less than a complete and permanent ban from the league seems too light to me based on his history, but the decision is made.  Let's move on.  I hope our players and fans can rise above doing something retaliatory if and when the Lakers come through town again.  This has really been an awesome season for us overall and the best is yet to come as long as we all stay classy and respectable.

I reall concern that this incident might pose a bigger setback to the people who previously had a mental issue. I don't think it will be any easier for companies to hire someone with past mental issue after watching this. Artest allegedly got best medical and psychiatric help one can get, and still displayed this level of emotional outburst. People will see it "Once he is mental, he is always mental." And this is so unfair to the people who worked really hard to overcome their mental problem.

Should have missed the rest of the season. Minimum. 7 seems awfully arbitrary. Will bring his career total to games suspended up to 120. Maybe that was the goal? Making a nice even round number for the total.

Idiots on the sports animal this afternoon kept wanting to compare Artest's suspensions to Perkins Technicals. Huge difference between getting a T for glaring at an official or talking too much and physically assaulting opposing players.

Did Artest ever stop and even see if Harden was okay? I thought he should have gotten twenty games minimum. But Stern's lack of fortitude is not a shock. Never thought this equation would be apropos, but he we are...Gary Bettman > David Stern. If you're a relative of David Stern this is not a compliment.

Damn---it took long enough. This can be a tough lounge to do standup in at times. I probably set myself back a week when I blathered about Terms of Endearment, but it really was a great movie. When of these nights when I've been drinking, I'll give you my Ten Greatest Chick Flicks of All-Time.

And the sad thing is I was kinda kidding about it.  :)  But no worries . . . It was a nongame night, an abandoned thread, and actually somewhat bb-related--a wild tangent off of Perk/Gran Torino.

@crow Thanks for the link... just wanna share what i wrote to NBA via that link that crow posted:

THE 7 GAME SUSPENSION OF RON ARTEST is an insult. Mr. Stern, what are you waiting for this idiot to do? Kill somebody?  Given his past actions, his nonchalant attitude after throwing the elbow and his continued "fake concern" is proof that this guy should be banned from the NBA for life. Does he deserve a another chance (what would it be now uh, 14th chance?) Maybe he does, but not in the NBA. This fool needs to hit rockbottom, take the money he has left and go to Tibet with the monks and find some real inner peace. You actually have people on blogs: OKC fans talking about inflicting harm on people with Lakers' jerseys. Look at how this incident reaps more violence among fans. This issue is going to snowball. Do the right thing... let this guy go. If you wanna help him, tell him to do what I just said.  JF

I'm a Knicks fan.. (waving white flag)... but what artest did (Metta World Peace my a**) was uncalled for and disgusting... if Stat or Melo would've done that sh*t I would've felt the same way... I hope Harden's mental game stays on point, especially if you guys play the Fakers in the 2nd round.. get well soon Harden... I hope the Fakers get swept, but if ya'll get 'em , take care of business. UNO

@JustKnowz If the Lakers are the "Fakers" what are the Knicks? Their last championship was '71. You don't fake your way to 17 championships...

@vinniepolak @JustKnowz I have a hell of alot more respect for the Knicks then the Lakers, who litterally needed Sterns help on 3 of the last 4 championships.

Honestly it should have been 10 or more. I know players get hit by unintended elbows all the time, and suffer serious injury from it, some get suspended by them at least a few games. HOWEVER, this was a INTENTIONAL elbow, that was MEANT to HURT someone. Not just SOMEONE, but a STAR PLAYER on the other team. LUCKILY, he did suffer a serious INJURY, but it easily COULD HAVE BEEN. NBA dropped the ball here.

Interested in how the family-friendly OKC crowd will handle this situation.

Insistent boo-ing seems a little unsatisfying for how much hate I've built; and getting everyone to chant "F*** Artest" seems like a pipe dream.

I say we just spin it the positive direction, and go with an 18,000 person FEAR THE BEARD chant.

@D@nny I absolutely agree with the 'spin it positive' chant.  Although someone said that doing "World Peace Sucks" chants would be pretty funny.  I agree with that, too.

i think the NBA is giving the Thunder the opportunity to punish him further in round 2 of the playoffs

I would like to see Reggie Jackson inserted in the starting lineup for their first game just to punch him in the balls. Won't happen of course, but it would be the high point of Jackson's career to-date.

i wonder if metta's reputation was taken into consideration.  if it did, then was the initial suspension only be 3 or 4 games and adding reputation it goes to 7?

No Looker Hooker
No Looker Hooker 5pts

@Jeremy2 Probably. 5 is about right for an elbow so he might have go an extra 2 for rep. Also think the NBA was basically suspending him for the first round of the playoffs so they figured 6 + 1 regular season game

Ozarkhick
Ozarkhick 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

I had suspected a 15 game suspension, to avoid the controversy of a return in the 2nd round against the Thunder.  Returning against OKC will only work as reverse PR by ensuring greater media coverage and replays, speculation regarding security issues, and a very hostile crowd.

The OKC crowd is loud, but usually well mannered, of course, but I think this was a little bit light, personally.

Steve H

Really surprised that it wasn't more than that. Get ready for a crazy assed scene if/when MWP takes the floor in OKC in second round.

7 games is not enough. He nearly took Harden's head off. Sidney Crosby was out for a year after a concussion. This may not be as bad, but we don't know that. What if James keeps experiencing symptoms?

It also potentially ruins OKC's long-term outlook in the playoffs. Who knows if James will be the same player he has been the past couple weeks? This guy just recently scored a career-high 40. We hope he'll be back to his normal self, but we have no possible way of knowing that.

Artest should've been suspended 15 games.

@JMattHicks I feel like an indefinite suspension was called for. Then we could get through the playoffs and the NBA would have the off season to ponder what to do.

Will do, bittersweet though, it'd be funny if the Lakers lost to their first round opponent because of this, but if that team is the Mavs, then we'd have to play them.

@Jeremy2It's not good enough for me. I know a lot of people were saying 5 to 10, but with Artest's past it should have been at the minimum 10. Plus, I find it appalling that there was no fine.

7 games with no pay is probably a pretty hefty fine in itself, hope Metta's feeling the burn though

@IdiotBayless missing games will incur a fine of loss wages...in this case it is nearly $350,000

If were lucky the Lakers will sweep there 1st round opponent, and Artest will have to miss the first 2 games of our series.
