Notes from shootaround: Nervous and ready

SAN ANTONIO –This time last year, the Thunder were about to journey into the unknown. A Western Conference Finals trip against a proven winner, on the road.

Same story this time around.

But the Thunder are said to have grown. They’re supposed to be different. More mature, experienced. Question is, will it matter against the mighty Spurs?

“We’ve been through it. we know what it takes,” said Kevin Durant at shootaround this morning. “We’ve been on the other side of it last year, losing. Hopefully we’ve learned from that experience and we’ve gotten better. We’ve grown since that loss last year against Dallas. We’ve seen it a little bit in those first two series.”

Still, it’s a massive Game 1 and there’s a whole lot on the line. All I have to do is sit in a chair tonight and I feel like I need to strap a barf bag to my head. The Thunder played it cool at shootaround doing their normal routine. But Scott Brooks wasn’t going to lie. He’s feeling some nerves.

“Nervous is good,” he said. “If you’re not nervous, you don’t care what you do. And we care about what we do. We care about the outcome.”

A few notes:

  • The Spurs’ arena has a very strange feel to it. It almost feels like a giant theater. It’s a rectangular building and the upper deck seems super high up. Seems like it would be a tough building to get used to.
  • KD was wearing a Redskins hat as he talked with reporters and one asked him if he became a fan because of Robert Griffin III. Come on now. KD’s been wearing that hat for four years now and is from the area for crying out loud.
  • One reporter asked Kendrick Perkins if he thought his minutes would get cut because of the matchups. Perk looked at him and said, “Why you say that?” The reporter just said, “I don’t know.” Kind of a funny exchange.
  • Perk was asked what the difference is between defending Tim Duncan and Andrew Bynum. “Well, Duncan is smart,” he said.
  • KD was asked if it’s been tough not to be a little in “awe” of the Spurs: “We’re all competitive guys and respect what they have done. But that was in the past,” he said. “They’ve been playing as of late. We’re 8-1 in the playoffs as well. But we can’t worry about what they’ve done against other teams. We just have to come out and compete against them. None of the guys will be in awe. We respect what they’ve done. They’ve built a dynasty here. We’ve just got to come out and be us, and we’ll be fine.”
  • Brooks was asked the same thing: “We’re not coming into the game in awe. We’re going to have respect for them. We know we can beat them if we do a lot of good things. And we also know they can beat us if we don’t.”
  • That KD quote above about OKC looking up to the Spurs doesn’t really show how Durant seemed to take that question. I think he’s feeling a tad disrespected by all this talk about the Spurs. He doesn’t like the fact people are thinking the Thunder are some underdog in the series. And for good reason. Yeah they Spurs are impressive, but this isn’t some overmatched Thunder team.
  • After Brooks finished speaking with the media,  we talked for a good little while and if he’s nervous, he’s not really showing it. Brooks does an excellent job of setting a comfortable tone with his team and he’s going to have them in a great mental state at tipoff.
  • The Spurs had what appear to be little fold up fan noise maker things on the seats. Come on Spurs, act like you’ve been here before.
  • Brooks wisely pointed out how the Spurs defend well without fouling. And with the Thunder being a team that likes to attack and get to the line, that could be an important aspect to the series.

Perkins think Andrew isnt smart?  Andrew Bynum should challenge him to an IQ test.  I'll put my money on Bynum.

Oh how I long for a solid 48 minutes of sound defense. Focus, don't get sucked in on the drive and dish, smart perimeter D. That would make me happy.

Just got finished watching this and thought it needed to be put back at the top of the stack.  This was posted by Jooseppi on Friday before Earth wobbled off its axis.

@ThunderChick2010 I appreciate the sentiment but Matrix Reloaded, no thanks. That and the 3d movie have to rank as among the worst sequels in the history of cinema. Completely ruined the story for me.

David Locke points out that OKC is #1 in PnR offense - Spurs #30 in PnR defense.

Hmmm...think we might run some PnR at 'em?!

Key to this series will be how the Thunder defend the PnR and resulting 3 pointers.

i expect a big game from durant. He just went through marion whom plays stellar defense on him. Then on to artest who plays VERY physical on him. So some rookie ..i just dont see KD struggling against you know.

well after reading what people have posted on here leading up to the game including the people who insanely break down the game it looks like I may have picked the wrong team to win this series :(

@bmuelle2112 Who cares?  If I chose the Spurs to win and it turns out it was the Thunder, then I would be really glad I was wrong.  I'd feel bad about having that opinion in the first place, but then realize that the Thunder were the better team!

For anyone that says the Clippers and Jazz victories were as impressive as the Lakers and Mavericks victories by the Thunder, consider this stat:

Combined Playoff wins of Spurs opponents since 2009: 8

Combined Playoff wins of Thndr opponents since 2009: 43

HR_TX
HR_TX 5pts

@aise0603 Not really sure how that matters. OKC didn't beat the Lakers/Mavs of those past years. Spurs fans can say they are 2-8 against OKC over the past 2-3 years. Don't think either of those things matter.

Legendary_Dork
Legendary_Dork 5pts like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@aise0603 oh yeah i stand firm knowing they beat a team that didnt stand a chance cause they couldnt execute. and a broken clippers team with 3 injured players and defense that couldnt guard jack shit lol.

Hasheem Thabinks

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet. But in the season series against the spurs, Lazar averaged about 10 minutes a game.  Now some of that might be due to injuries and garbage time. However he is probably going to be OKC's X factor in this series

ThunderWins
ThunderWins 5pts

@jdstorm You mean X factor as in if he plays we probably already have lost the game?

Hasheem Thabinks
Hasheem Thabinks 5pts

@ThunderWins X factor as in he might get a surprising amount of minutes. due to the thunders lack of wing depth. some of which will be important if OKC are going to win.

Old Man Game

So the series pretty much comes down to Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard right? If those two outperform their season averages (as both did at times this season against us) while Parker and Duncan still play well we're losing.

ThunderBelize

@Old Man Game Like for the scary reality of such a statement. Of course would be negated by our role players coming up larger than their season averages...

bmuelle22

I hope we come out driving the ball to the rim in this game...there were a couple of times in the lakers series where we almost lost the game because we started to settle for long jumpshots and 3pt shots

In the season series vs. the Spurs:

Thunder in first half     -21

Thunder in second half  +14

Predictions:

Thunder take game one.

Durant shows why all the talk about Leonard's defense was laughable, but in his usual, almost-didn't-notice fashion.

The Spurs shoot like hell from long range.

Russ abuses Tony Parker.

Thabo and Russ both see minutes on Parker.

Harden starts slow in this one. He still hasn't been able to consistently take those superstar talents on the road consistently. But tonight he has a few big moments to help the Thunder get over the top.

As Promised
As Promised 5pts

@BRY BRY I think the Thunder are going to play some type of zone in the perimeter so they don't leave anyone up from outside, and then man up in the paint.  That is the most effective game plan against them

Bry Bry
Bry Bry 5pts

 @thelaughingwiseman

It would be interesting to see some zone. I also kind of wonder if Brooks would ever go back to switching like he use to. I know it was easier with Green because they could switch 1 through 4, but it might work with Ibaka as well. It could be useful just to throw Parker off balance here and there.

Bry Bry
Bry Bry 5pts

@thelaughingwiseman Would especially be effective if we were playing small with Ibaka or Collison at the 5 and Thabo on the ball against Parker.

I can't wait for the Thunder to come out on top in this game.  I actually don't feel nervous at all.  Things have gone way over the top for the Spurs and everyone's crush on them.  Every news media has claimed them Champions.  Screw that, they haven't won it yet.  I think the Thunder are going to come in and show why they deserve to be in the Finals this year.  Thunder up!

@aise0603 Factor in pace and minutes, use TOV%.  We're 2nd to Denver, Spurs are 6th.  Spurs are 10th among playoff teams in opponent TOV, we're 7th.  Negligible differences in this sort of samples but using raw totals can be mislreading when you're ranking teams and not controlling or differences in minutes or pace.

@aise0603 More importantly, the Spurs were well below league average at forcing turnovers during the season.  Hopefully this newfound ball security is not a fluke.
