Practice Report: Bouncing back, moving on

SAN ANTONIO –Mood assessment at the Thunder’s practice Monday: agitated.

The Thunder knew exactly what had happened the night before in Game 1. And as they walked back on to AT&T Center’s floor again, it kind of sank in it seemed. They had let one get away. A nine-point fourth quarter lead seemed to set up the Thunder well to finish out Game 1. But things grinded to a halt and the Thunder couldn’t find points.

They kicked Monday’s practice off with an hour and a half film session, and you can be sure that fourth quarter was a major talking point.

“I think last night we were kind of all over the place in the fourth quarter,” said James Harden. “That caused some turnovers and some easy transition points for them.”

Harden played an uncharacteristic game, struggling from the floor, bulling over defenders for charges and not getting to the line. For the first time this season he didn’t attempt a free throw. In fact, the last two games against the Spurs, he’s only 0-1 from the line.

“I didn’t go strong enough to the basket,” he said. “I didn’t force them to make calls. I just got to be ready. Be ready to stay in attack mode, stay aggressive and get to the rim and get to the line.”

The Spurs deployed an interesting defensive tactic of trying to funnel OKC’s ballhandlers to the paint and let Tim Duncan protect the rim. The Thunder turned down midrange jumpers and attacked away, like you’re told to do. But they couldn’t finish around, over or through Duncan.

“We could get to the rim, we couldn’t finish,” said Kevin Durant. “It’s not like he was blocking all of our shots or contesting all of our shots. I missed a dunk, I missed a few layups, James missed a few, Russ missed a few. We’re going to keep going at these guys, keep trying to get to the paint, keep trying to get to the free throw line.”

But that’s one game lost and the Thunder need to bounce back quickly. They’ve been terrific at it this season going 16-3 after a loss, but this is the playoffs. It’s harder to do, right?

“I don’t think so,” Durant said. “We just got to be ready. I think we will be.

“We’re all confident, we’re all keeping our heads up. Of course Game 1 loss, we can’t get too down on ourselves, but we just got to keep fighting.”

A few practice notes:

  • Scott Brooks on Stephen Jackson: “I thought he did a great job with Kevin. Kevin’s not an easy guy to guard. But he did a great job really getting into him and forcing him off his spots and not letting him get open looks and not letting him get easy catches. And then he makes the big shot.”
  • The Thunder like to put the ball in Harden’s hands late in games, but in Game 1 tried to isolate Durant more. “I just tried to get the ball in my hands and make a play,” Durant said. “Spurs do a good job of knowing your plays and trying to take you out of them, but we play random basketball, drive and kick basketball. Just try and make plays.”
  • Harden said the Thunder’s early fourth quarter foul trouble contributed to their defensive breakdowns: “Little bit. I think early in the fourth we got into the bonus so we were a little timid to touch him and be aggressive like we normally would.”
  • Russell Westbrook, who doesn’t have a sterling relationship with the media to begin with, didn’t make any new friends today. With a large horde of reporters and cameras waiting, instead of walking to the spot kind of carved out for him in the middle (where all the other players had spoke), Westbrook stopped on the outside of the circle and make the media and cameras turn to him. It caused quite the scramble as cameramen stumbled and fell over each other trying to adjust to the new positioning.
  • Some kid from the Disney channel was at practice filming different things with players. He was maybe the most annoying person I’ve ever seen. He wanted to make a 3 with Durant standing next to him and fired line drives at the rim. KD took the ball and mimicked him saying, “Look like Maz,” meaning assistant coach Maz Trakh. Royal Ivey found this hilarious.
  • Harden was asked if he feels like he has to outduel Manu Ginobili: “Sometimes, yeah. I did that in the Dallas series with Terry. And they got a lot of players that score off the bench, but the main player obviously is Ginobili. I just got to be better individually. Defensively, I think offensively stay in attack mode but defensively be better and be more physical and aggressive.”
  • Harden was asked if he takes something from the fact the Thunder were in the game despite him and Westbrook not playing well: “Definitely. We went up 10 in the third quarter with me and Russell not scoring the ball.”
  • Not much talk about changing up rotations or lineups. Thabo was a +11 while Serge Ibaka was a +9. Scott Brooks doesn’t like to air out his thoughts, but I’m sure during that film session he paid close attention to those two.
  • Eric Maynor was out on the floor shooting some jumper. Nice to see that.
  • Like I said, the Thunder were definitely annoyed with the fact they had lost the night before. I don’t know how to read that. It wasn’t like they were all eager and excited about bouncing back. It was like they were pissed. Maybe that’s a good thing.

Call me crazy but the way I saw it - the reason that Game 1 was so good was because our defense was so awesome.  Any improvement today needs to simply be to keep our defense loaded through all 4 quarters.  Our offense wasn't great but at the end of the day, we can't beat the Spurs by just trying to play better offense.   We beat them by playing 4 quarters of exactly what we played in the first 3, especially the 2nd and 3rd.  I hope we come out with arms flying and lots of pressure because we now know how to put the stick in their spoke.

I got to say I feel much better about this series after game 1. If the Thunder can bring that same defense in the first 3 quarters for the rest of the series and shoot the ball better, we can win this series, without a doubt.

Are the Spurs going to make that many bad passes and shoot that poorly from 3pt land again?  I don't know.  They basically had a Tom Brady throws 4 picks game and the refs saved them.

@FF_pickups  @Thunderbuzzy Were we hoping for 4 "Spurs played badly" wins?  If so, then it's better we lost and spared ourselves the misery of hope.  I, myself, think we can play with them.

I don't know of one but I would be interested.

qrex

@FF_pickups  @Thunderbuzzy Treat every game with JCrawford as a loss, then when KD hits that shot its even more enjoyable.

BTW, is there a site that matches team records with refs?  I.e. is there a ref who has the opposite effect for us?

nomad
nomad 5pts

@Thunderbuzzy  @FF_pickups  @qrex The biggest reason for Westbrook's dominance was the fact he fought over the top of screens. Virtually every time he did that, something good happened defensively. If he starts to get lazy and go under the screen, bad things will happen.

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@FF_pickups  @qrex Exactly. Parker was non existent that game. That's a HUGE step to stopping the Spurs, don't you realize? If we can manage to do the same thing to Parker, and contain Ginobili a little bit? This series is definitely winnable.

FF_pickups

Westbrook totally, athletically dominated Parker.

Thunderbuzzy

@qrex  @FF_pickups Tony Parker didn't hurt us at all. Duncan didn't have a big game either

FF_pickups
FF_pickups 5pts

 @qrex  @Thunderbuzzy

I hope you are right.  I think you may in fact be right.  But the refs spotting the Spurs a 1-0 lead changes the dynamic of the Series in a negative way for the Thunder.

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts

@qrex  @FF_pickups I think we can play with them also. You have to give credit to the Thunder defense, they were a large part of the reason why the Spurs played so badly the first few quarters. Lot of steals, blocks, and hustle plays by the Thunder. All of which disappeared in the 4th quarter.

ElMexiThunder
ElMexiThunder 5pts

Seriously stop blaming the refs. Our Coach and Players lost us the game in the end. Your theories still don't make sense. Why would the NBA want a pack of old men fighting for the title then the young bloods. They would make much more money with KD VS LBJ alone then they could dream of any other match up.

I'm about to let it go, for real.  If this game costs us the series, I'm done with the NBA.

@FF_pickups its not directly at you, its at everybody. We almost sound like Laker, and Heat fans. I'll be surprisded if the crowd doesn't chant "refs you suck" at this point. The Animal, facebook, twitter even here. The officials this the officials that. Plz let it go

Fuzzy Logic
Fuzzy Logic 5pts

@ElMexiThunder The officials didn't decide the game but there's no denying that they influenced it... particularly in the 4th when they changed the way they had been calling the game the previous 3 quarters. The mainstream media is picking apart every other aspect of the game but they're afraid to talk about the officiating because that would affect their access and how they're looked on by the fans. So, there's no problem with the fans discussing it.

FF_pickups

Let me just apologize for my rant.  I'm listening to the First Take podcast and it is infuriating me.  Thanks for allowing me to vent. :-(

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts

@FF_pickups It's frustrating. I sit in my recliner watching the games and cursing the refs too. The problem is there are too many grey areas when it comes to fouls. They need to clarify these rules more. If all the games are called somewhat similar it makes it easier not to blame things on refs. I feel your pain I really do. But the bottom line is the Thunder were in great shape to win that game and didn't finish it.

IAmTheReign
IAmTheReign 5pts

@Thunderbuzzy  @FF_pickups I sit and watch the game and get upset with the horrible officiating as well, but more than that, I get pissed with our mistakes.  I guess I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, but I assume westbrook making it to the paint with 2 defenders in his path might make him choose to pass out to a WIDE open sef.  Same with Harden.  Or having perk on the floor.  Every time there's a defensive rotation missed and an easy bucket scored, that's what's pissing me off.  I'm not going to lay this game at the feet of the ref's when it is clear our guys were willing to lose without any assistance.

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts

@IAmTheReign  @FF_pickups I can agree with that. Too many times Ginobili was allowed to waltz into the paint untouched and nobody around for a lay in. Whether it be by their offense or in-bounding the ball that CAN"T happen. Not in the WCF.

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts

@FF_pickups There were much more problems afoot for sure. Like Durant not scoring in the 4th quarter? That cannot happen. Harden has been struggling shooting the ball, Westbrook had a bad night also. When I seen 34% from the field between Durant/Harden/Westbrook. I thought to myself...how in the world are they still in this game at all. We just didn't play well the other night it's that simple.

FF_pickups
FF_pickups 5pts

 @Thunderbuzzy

We were in the game because the Spurs played awful.  If Westbrook and Harden go to the line a normal amount, say the 12.3 they average, you can now take 5 misses away.  Now they went 22/52 for 42.3% and scored another 8 points. Instead of being up 9, we are up 17.  And how about all of those whistled turnovers?  7-1 in favor of the Spurs.  If a that's more reasonable, we stretch the lead to 20, easily, that's insurmountable.  Not to mention, Duncan has to sit because of foul trouble.

Questionable officiating, while infuriating, really is part of the game. I know it's not right, but it's certainly not absent from every playoffs I've noticed over the past 5 years. If seeing so much of it can help me wrap my head around it, I'd argue that while it impacts a game, the superior team wins the series. A team with 4 or 16 titles holds more clout in this league than the Thunder. No doubt. However, it doesn't make it right. It doesn't mean the Thunder are not the superior team.

FF_pickups
FF_pickups 5pts

game is the wrong word, you mean it's part of the show.  I feel like I'm cheering for a WWF wrestler or the Washington Generals.  I'm just about done with this league.

Everyone who says that officiating didn't cost us that game, we would have been up by 25 if the game was called neutrally.  The Spurs played awful basketball in the first 3 quarters, they had 14 live ball turnovers in the first half and shot 7-22 from 3 pt land in the first 3 quarters yet only down 9.

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@FF_pickups I thought the refs let both teams play pretty physical really. Thunder just lost that game because they disappeared in the 4th. Can't do that in the Finals.

@FF_pickups Joey Crawford hates Tim Duncan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOygTd1NWCM

He wants to fight him and was suspended for the 2007 playoffs. http://voices.yahoo.com/nba-ref-joe-crawford-suspended-indefinitely-after-307108.html?cat=14

Joey may be a bad ref, but refs don't decide a series. There is no conspiracy to make the Spurs win. If the Thunder are better  they will win the series.

Thunderbuzzy
Thunderbuzzy 5pts

@FF_pickups I seen on a couple of occasions Thunder players committed fouls that weren't called. The game was played pretty physically they didn't call everything. The guys attacking the basket need to realize this and go up stronger and finish.

Thunderbuzzy

@FF_pickups Thunder got some calls when they attacked the basket. They failed to make the buckets on all of them. Look man officiating is going to seem lopsided when you lose. Blaming the officials isn't the way I choose to deal with a loss. I would rather them fix the problems they had. Like shooting 34% between Harden Westbrook and Durant. At some point you just have to make plays and the Thunder didn't it's that simple.

FF_pickups

Tim Duncan commits moving screens virtually every play down the court and was not called one time in the game.  Just watch him, if you still have the game on DVR, go back and just watch, he's more like a fullback than a basketball player.

There's NO WAY the refs could've missed the foul on the Westbrook slam dunk.  It's impossible.  There's no way the refs don't check that obvious 3-pt'er by Fisher.   I'm not buying it.  We are 1-4 in playoff games officiated by Joe Crawford and that one win we were down 7 with 1:54 to go and KD made a buzzer beater to cap a furious comeback.  It's so OBVIOUS.

I'm so sick of the NBA.  The officiating is so bad, you have to question the integrity of the sport.  I'm sorry, I'm not supporting this 'sport'.  The NFL and Baseball don't have this BS.

TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard

@FF_pickups This claim has been made before and I'll say the same thing I said then, the NFL does a better job at rule enforcement (officiating) but instead of making superstar calls, they make superstar RULES. I prefer neither, but I do respect the man who says point blank "we're giving superstars preferential treatment" than the guy who just gives them preferential treatment but says otherwise.

As far as baseball though, I definitely have to disagree. Like courtsense said, the officiating in baseball is more subjective than any sport, it's just easier to see an uncalled foul on tv than it is to see a called ball that should've been a strike.

I do think Joey Crawford had a hand in ruining the game for us. He's one of the poorest officials there is in the sports world. Because our game revolves so much around dribble drives, having a bad official, whether he's biased or not, hurts us because of the inconsistency of foul calls at the rim. Did it contribute to the loss? Definitely. You attack with a different mindset when you know what will be called and what won't vs when you have no idea whether the calls will come or not, which affects your entire game. But was it what lost us the game? Definitely not. The same things that lose us every game we lose are what lost us the game.

FF_pickups
FF_pickups 5pts

 @JimboSlice

It was what lost us the game.  The Spurs played AWFUL in the first 3 quarters but were still in the game due to the officials.  The Spurs played a great 4th quarter, we didn't.  They whooped us in the 4th but it shouldn't have mattered because the game should've been 20+ at that point.  So if you are saying 'The officiating in the fourth quarter didn't cost us', then I agree, but if you are saying that 'the officiating in the first 3 quarters didn't cost us', I wholeheartedly disagree

ThunderWins

@FF_pickups  @JimboSlice Its BIZARRE that the same thing happened in last years WCF.    There was at least one of those games Dirk was untouchable and no wonder he could score at will because we were not allowed to defend him.

@FF_pickups I haven't followed baseball since I was a kid but the NFL has it's fair share of questionable calls and non calls as well. How often is it said that you can find holding on almost every play? Star players get star streatment (Tom Brady) and their O-lines are allowed to get away with murder. Not to mention how much it changes play to play, game to game on how much contact DB's are allowed with the WR.

courtsense

@FF_pickups You're right. The most fundamental aspect of baseball - the strikezone - never varies from game to game, team to team, batter to batter, or even pitch to pitch.
